  • Overwatch does some incredible stuff with its audio, to ensure players get the right information when they need it. How has Blizzard managed that? Chris takes a look (or a listen, I guess).

    One of the big things I noticed when playing Overwatch was that if you're getting shot in the back your teammates will say "behind you!" or something similar. It can only be heard by you, and it comes in handy when you don't know where the damage is coming from.

    • @kempo_95
      @kempo_95 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is also possible that the one shooting you, say that if there is no teammate around.

    The voice callouts you get from your own hero when they drop in health is a detail I really like. I also like how dVa has two, one for in the mech that sounds frustrated and one for on foot that sounds like real danger.

    I was absolutly amazed by Overwatches sound design. Within a few hours I learned so much about how the mechanics work just from the sound design. I learned about every ultimate, every word phrases the heroes say give actually important information, and I have a much easier time locating things then in other FPS.
    For example you can hear when the enemy builds a teleporter. You immediatly start to look out for it (especially flankers) and if someone destroys it, they will say so, so you know you don't have to worry about that. And it's not messy even when alot of things happen at the same time

  • @coffeeninja88

    Actually, I think my favorite thing, or at least the thing I've been finding the most useful, is when you take damage from an enemy you can't currently see, and there's a teammate nearby/in line-of-sight/however they calculate it; you get whichever character's unique "behind you!" line. I don't know what it is about it, it just helps me react to the situation much faster. So good. I've never been a huge Blizzard fanboy (literally the only other Blizzard game I've ever sunk any substantial time into is Hearthstone), but that doesn't mean I don't seriously respect the "Blizzard polish" as they say. It's the little things and all the subtle nuances that can really take a great game and turn it into a true classic.

    The great thing about it is that it's very straightforward gives you what you need to hear and no clutter, making for a very seamless gameplay experience. Even if you're not thinking about it, the game is giving you so much background information that you can just focus entirely on the game itself. Sometimes you don't even have to look at the UI because cues like "I'm on fire!" and your character deeply breathing when on low health are all there to communicate in such a simple and effective manner.
    From things like unique ulti lines, The distant echo of a sniper shot that can only mean a Widowmaker is on the map, the loud noise of Junkrat's rip-tire incoming, to hearing a firefight in the distance while you're on the way from your spawn, it's so good because it feels so organic, it makes sense and it doesn't get in your way.

      +Eurogamer If you are talking about games from this generation. R6 Siege, Splatoon or Killer Instinct should be your next stop as they use the audio really well (Though I think you did KI before tangentally). Splatoon in particular has a very underrated soundmix that helps you with the proximities of your team mates and opponents. Nintendo were really clever, especially since the game had no voice chat. Granted, you will still get rolled by a squad using a vent client because there will always be an advantage. But the sound cues used are very well done.

    The part where you do the comparison is the best part. My ears hurt after the 'before'. I am SO used to their system of sound design that hearing the sounds without the design elements added makes it just sound like noise that I'd sooner disable since not only do I not glean any information out of it but it distracts and annoys me.

    TF2 had a similar ethos for the design of their characters, by shape/size you could easily distinguish who you are looking at.
    Then of course they went silly with all the hats and different weapons and stuff that made it annoying, personally.

    • @littlebigphil
      @littlebigphil 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The instantly recognizable silhouette design is in Overwatch as well. Also, in TF2, you can disable all hats if you have some technical know how.

    • @opticalmoose8091
      @opticalmoose8091 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The thing is, in TF2 they never let through any skins which change their silhouette and overall color, so any character is always instantly recognizable, whatever skin they wear. Same thing with Dota 2.

      I'd like to disagree, but throughout my amateur rugby days, I've played with lots of ex-pat Brits and Irish, and the ones I've met they're VERY particular to their regional accents. One guy called out a girl at a local Guitar Center in San Francisco who was born and raised from Dublin, but lived in SF for school. He was shocked when she was able to name *his* accent and where from Leeds he may have went to school.

    One thing to note about the ultimates, is that heroes on the enemy team will often call out their ultimates in their native tongue.
    Such as Mercy saying 'Helden sterben nicht!' When she's on the enemy team, and 'Heroes never die!' when she's on your team.
    Same with Genji 'Ryūjin no ken wo kūrae!' on the enemy team, and 'The dragon becomes me!' when he's on your team.
    Can't remember all the characters who do this, but I definitely recall Hanzo and Mei

    The reason why people don't talk about a lot this is because (at least this is what I think) that it's common knowledge. Even just making a satisfying noise will attract a player to it. I love the stomping you can hear when in D.va's "Meka". Footsteps and every little noise and voices should have as much thought into them as the normal gameplay mechanics. Take CSGO for example, you can tell what gun they are using by listening to the fire rate, pitch, and loudness. Like somebody comes around a corner with an AWP and fires it twice in a row. You know for sure unless the noise of a throwable or other things are coming into play. Overwatch is built for esports and they will put care into everything because even the smallest thing can mean winning the match.

    • @tubester358
      @tubester358 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Almighty Pido - Rather than calling common knowledge, I'd say the sound design is so intuitive and well-made that it syncs in to even new players without any real need for a tutorial and without them realizing. The character dialogues feel so natural but at the same time I soon realized how every line (post the pre-battle) is actually a que. I thought the game might be a lot worse without teammates using a mic but the characters say much of what I'd like to say, lol (plus the dialogue wheel).
      CS:GO does have awesome gun sounds though (dat Desert Eagle is blissful).

    The comparison clip at 6:46 is striking - I felt significantly more spatially aware in the second clip, I can hardly tell what the teammates are doing right before you exit the spawn area. The difference is very similar to playing an fps on a speaker bar then going to positional 3d audio headphones.
    I don't think you mentioned this directly but I do believe the importance system also prioritizes your class too - giving emphasis to classes which directly counter you or pose a bigger threat than others. It also appears to be that it communicates your opponents health status through sound as well - I find the sounds going on during an encounter do an awesome job telling you if you're doing real damage or just minor splash damage so I can make better decisions as to advance or retreat.
    All of this clear communication to the player makes the game far less frustrating for me - when I die or otherwise mess up, I feel like I knew what was going on, I knew the situation and just made a poor choice - versus feeling like I don't know why I died. I think this subtle 'accessibility through design' is going to help make this a pretty widely enjoyed game.

    It was shown a little in the clips, but my favorite part about the sound design is how teammates call out to you. Both for things like status of turrets, but also direct combat. If you're being shot from behind, someone around you says "behind you!"
    Now, typically, this would be done manually by other players, with a mic or voice command, but not everyone takes the time to do that.

    I always wondered why I heard two different voice lines when the ultimates went off. Do you happen to have a list of the voice lines for each of the ultimates, and which one is friendly and which one is the enemy's?

    • @hi-i-am-atan
      @hi-i-am-atan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Genji, Hanzo, and Mei speak their lines in their native tongue when enemies, and in English when allies. Presumably, Zayra does as well.
      Pharah was already covered. McCree has the high noon line when an enemy, "Step right up!" when ally. 76 has "I've got you in my sights," and "Tactical visor, activated( ? )." Mercy says something involving "established," and as an ally has her actual signature line of "Heroes never die!" Symmetra seemingly doesn't have a line while she's an enemy - instead, it seems like a character on _your_ team has a line when she creates a teleporter, and they all have lines for when they actually find it.
      The others most definitely have different lines, it's just that I haven't actually listened _to_ them as I'm too busy listening _for_ them.

      But even if you don't remember all the lines, you can still tell if its an enemy or ally, simply by how it sounds.
      As a general rule, lines spoken in a character's native tongue are enemy lines, while the english translation is an ally line (this is the case for Hanzo, Genji, Mei, Mercy, Zarya, and Widowmaker).
      If both lines are in english, then the enemy line will sound more aggressive/threatening, while an ally line will have more of a helpful/informative tone. Best example is Pharah's lines, but other notable examples are Reaper (ally says "clearing the area", enemy says "die, die, die!"), Soldier: 76 ("tactical visor activated" vs "I've got you in my sights"), and D.Va ("activating self-destruct sequence" vs "Nerf this!")
      Not all characters follow this. Some just don't seem to have variants in lines, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why "let's drop the beat" is the line for an enemy Lucio, while the allied Lucio says "oh let's break it down!" Symmetra has no enemy line, and it's rather your teammates who point out the location of a teleporter. Bastion's enemy line is... louder, basically. and Winston just roars.

    I find it really interesting how the system can affect plays in different ways. I had huge trouble when starting out with Overwatch because I couldn't accurately judge distance by sound volume and intensity. If footsteps are loud, it means they're close, but when they get amplified over other things in the mix, it sounds like they're closer than they actually are, especially if you see a teammate in front of you with quiet footsteps. Hearing the non-dynamic clip was actually easier for me since the volume is entirely based on distance.
    This doesn't mean the system is bad in any way, I just probably need to get used to it. I have a very high spatial awareness, so dynamic volume really messes up my head.

    Impressive video. Like you said in the video, many things you're doing on a reflex without thinking too much, but there lots of information deployed on the battlefield through sounds and especially in Overwatch being an all out shooter arena fight you need to listen carefully and try take advantage of this. However not every much is the same so sometimes you just do what you gotta do.
    But yeah, Blizzard has some talent in crafting every aspect of game.

    Now i understand how ultimates work. A lot of the time i'm having to press Tab to check whether the hero is on my team or not, I've also wondered why the dialogue on my screen sounds different from that is heard on the killcam. But now i know, i just need to learn the differences.

    I love how much detail is in this game, when I first played I instantly knew the audio sounded very different from other games and god it's so nice. They spent so much time fine tuning and making sure everything is in working order before the release. My only gripe with the game is the play of the game system, and Soldier 76 and Mcree are annoying.
    Play of the game system needs to prioritize potential plays of the games that don't use an ultimate over ones that do because god, it's so boring watching a hanzo pressing q while facing the capture point :T Some ultimate plays of the game are cool, I just had one as mei where I froze the entire team on the cart and me and my team team wiped them. Twist though, that wasn't play of the game, a pharah got it for cancelling another pharah's ult and killing one person...

      This. It kinda blew my mind for a brief moment when I first realised that the "Behind you!" warning from a team mate, wasn't prompted by a player, and came from the "character" automatically. It still blows me away somewhat that a unorthodox feature like that has never once screwed me over or triggered falsely.

    Overwatch sound is truly amazing. I was in this match where I kept hearing noises coming from my left (border of the map), and as I didn't know the map well, I was trying to figure out where the fight was. The sounds were so precise that I literally started picturing their positions in my head, and also the heroes involved. Then I realised I had the L-R sides wrong on my headphones lol

    As a Sound Designer it's great to see the main stream media talk about the topic, so thanks Brat! The only thing I want to add is that devs DON'T keep these techniques behind close doors. Infact I would argue the audio community is the most sharing when it comes to new tricks and techniques. It's just a not very sexy topic for most media outlets. If you check out any conference like GDC, develop ect the audio teams from the biggest studios are still sharing their latest findings from their last game.

      theDamon2781 You said it yourself, she's a "voice actor". Just because she's British doesn't mean that the voice she uses for Tracer sounds at all cockney. She sounds like an American doing a 'bad' cockney accent, and that is almost certainly intentional. Like I said, I quite like it, but don't kid yourself into thinking it's an accurate cockney accent.
