    Cutting should be a last resort like a car or truck that does not have a lowering spring option on the market. In most cases cutting stock springs will effect the ride quality in a negative way. This is from years of experience with lowering all my cars I owned. 7 since I was 16. My first three cars I owned ('78 Cougar, '78 Camaro, and '85 Silverado) had their coil springs cut for a mild drop and all three sucked. Lesson learned. If they have a company that make them then buy them. If safety and drivability is not an issue or they don't offer a spring for you application then cut away. Just my two cents. No hate here. This is actually quite informative if you have to do it. Thumbs up.

    I have owned 30 cars in my days still have 8 of them all classics, and every one of them i have cut quarter off the front coil and put 2 inch lowering blocks in the back never had a problem and doing one now as we speak a 1961 XK falcon

    I use to have a 87 cutlass supreme back in the 90s and back them if we wanted to lower a car some we just heated the springs with a jack set to the height we wanted the car to be and heated them until the car slowly fall to the jack and slowly let the springs cool down on its own so the car won't have to much bounce.

      that way is even dumber as it anneals the spring ,takes any heat treatment out and alters the metallurgical construction of the spring.this is how you get bounce,not how to eliminate it.

    I cut my springs but it only took about 2 minutes because I didn't take anything apart to do it, I simply removed the wheels, jacked the frame of the car up to take the weight off the suspension and cut the springs while still in place...easy.

    • @dreich68
      @dreich68 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      *****
      why is that so hard to believe?? I simply used a grinder with a cutting disc on my '82 Honda civic with the springs still in place (without weight on them of course). I wouldn't recommend doing it that way but it was very fast and easy. I bought proper lowered springs for my current ride though.

Because gettin real springs costs more than those crappy civics. Just a typical shit box rolling around. Get a real car and do some real work on it.

    All this talk about cutting springs being bad is just crap.
    Cutting springs can be done right, and at times has been even recommended by people like hotchkis, fred phun, caroll smith... (Look them up if you don't know who they are). If you know what you're doing it can be done right with very good results.
    What you need to understand is how cutting springs affects spring rate and keep that in mind when you cut them. You have to keep spring rates in a reasonable range and a reasonable front to rear ratio. If you cut the springs too much you raise the spring rate too high and you get a redicuous bumpy ride (to take advantage of higher rates you really need higher rate shocks...). Worse, if you increase the front rate too much relative to the rear you get a car that understeers (safe but slow), and if you increase the rear rate too much relative to the front you get a car that oversteers (fast but DANGEROUS, you screw up with this car and it will be tail happy which is very hard to control and will at some point cause an accident, and if you've done it and think it fees fine, get a real road racer or autox'er to take you out in it and show you where the problem is).
    Most cars have stiffer spring rates in the front (to support the engine...), and typically they have more coils made of much thicker wire. The more coils you have the less change you get in rate when you cut one off, but the change in height is dependent on coil spacing, suspension geometry and weight on the suspension (on most cars cutting the front coils changes height more than the back)
    For example, On 3rd and 4th gen f-bodies that means that cutting coils off the front will increase spring rate less than cutting coils off the back, and they both want significantly higher rates in the front, and in both cases you don't really want to go over around 200# in the back unless you have VERY stiff springs in the front. On 3rd gens with performance suspensions in them from the factory (TA, GTA, WS6, Z28, Iroc...), that means that you can cut a coil or more off of the front (a coil will get your spring rate into the high 700's) and < a coil in the back. If you re-install them like that the fronts will be too low (practically sitting on the bump stops) and the backs will be too high. The quick and easy solution is that the springs are the same diameter so you can swap the thick rear spring isolators to the front and use the fronts or some hose in the back. You end up with a stance somewhat like eibach sportlines (with the back a little higher, sportlines tend to sit too low in the back) and spring rates/ride very close to eibach pro springs, but in a way better- eibach springs have progressive rate springs in the back which can be more comfortable on the road, but are a compromise in a truly handling situation and can bottom, where the stock springs are specific rate.

  • @tedtedness184

    You failed with testing height, you drive it around the block then measure. A car never settle down to the right heoght when dropped from a jack lift. As the jack lowers the suspenion moves the tire out and keeps the body "up about 1 to 2 inches. You could back it doen the drive and back up . but around the block may help the spring to find it's happy place on yjr upper and lower cradle.

    • @klowny1969
      @klowny1969  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why? Alot of suspension peices uses either locknuts or pinchnuts as well..especially in high horsepower applications where the parts go through alot of stress and vibrate loose..

    • @cdurkinz
      @cdurkinz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, half of the time when you are trying to do a fix you're just removing stock parts to get to what you need, and stock parts with tens of thousands of miles on them are almost always grimy and seized.
      Adding lock-tite to them is fine, but it's going to make the next mechanics job, or my next job, even harder. I'm not saying not to do it on a new part, but nasty old grimy parts? Too much in my opinion.
      Sports Cars could be a different story, especially the ones where the customer actually DRIVES the car like a sports car...
      Also if there's already a locknut or pinchnut, why add lock-tite? Those do the same thing.

    • @klowny1969
      @klowny1969  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      gamer taboo yeah..sometimes they dont supply u with pinch nuts or lock nuts and thats why getting in the habbit of putting locktite is a good idea..some manufacturers even advise in using two nuts so they dont back off.. the manufacturers know the importance of suspension nuts not backing out..
      Its all good..we can agree to disagree :)

      For Thirdgen's there are VERY few aftermarket springs that are done RIGHT for performance. Most are low rate progressive springs meant for looks but not performance, the very reason you should be lowering the car in the first place. Only a few MFG's produce a good spring. Guldstrand, and Vogtland springs are the real deal. Vogtland springs are more accessible. Guldstrand doesn't even advertise them anymore, you have to call them on the phone to order.

    next time just put it all together with the stock spring and take solid pieces of material that are the height you want the car to be at each corner and place them @ the jack points of the car. Once you have them in place, take the torch and heat all of the coils evenly. Do one corner at a time and have wet rags ready to cool it slowly. DO NOT HOSE OFF with cold water or you'll snap a coil. You'll get that pancake look you're after a lot quicker and cheaper than with this bullshit aftermarket coils. If you dont like it because you find it to bouncy, then install lowering shocks. If you fuck it up, you'll crack a coil, but there's no fucking it up if you heat them up evenly, and DONT HOSE THEM with cold water, just wet rags wrapped around them when done. Of course...... not everyone is as good with their hands are others are.

    • @klowny1969
      @klowny1969  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heating up the coils?? Seriously? That can really mess up the spring rate

      Cutting springs, and general suspension work on thirdgen F-bodies is exceedingly easy. Very simple.
      I did a C5 brake swap on my Thirdgen in about 2 hours (not including spindle modification) I didn't have the tools to properly modify the spindle and make sure the brake bosses drilled and tapped correctly and straight so I swapped on those.

    so the most dangerous part is after butchering your ride it handles so badly and you take it out on public roads and endanger everyone when your forced to do some emergency maneuver to avoid a accident and completely loose all control and possibly kill someone
    but hey you looked cool for a while

      Cuts rose scents or take and evenly compress lower half of factory spring, now heat lower half of coils with acetylene torch while moving slowly around the spring until it glows orange and lower coils will stack evenly, let coils cool for a few minutes, now take spring compressor off and reheat the same metal to help re temper the metal so the spring isn't so brittle, now it won't break. The car will be low and ride great with a more dampened and smoother ride
