    Klowney - Great work on not only explaining clearly the steps but providing a video that follows the steps and shows the close ups of all the parts, on and off. I like the way you explain to us weekend mechanics on how to fix our rides, the coil springs are not all that ez but you made me confident that I can do this as long as I have the right tools, pickle fork and pry bar are essential. Thanks again.

    After installing shocks I cut a piece of 3/8" rubber fuel line and put it on the top shock threaded stud and cover the top fuel line hole with black RTV. I like that brown color, it was 1st used on the 77 Z28 and was the color used on the 77 GM pamphlet. I order a new 77 , 78 and 80 Z28's which were all 4 speeds in those days. I still own my 70 Z28!4 speed that I bought in 1981 from the orig owner. In 1990 I sold my 80 Z28 and bought a 1987 Grand Nat'l with 8,000 km or 4,970 mi. Nice job on the video too.

    I like the stance as it is now, looks really good. I am restoring a 73 Firebird.. I had a 71 Formula that my dad owned and gave me when I was 12 and it took me 4 years to restore it back in the 80's. It was great until it burned in a garage fire back in 1991 while I was over in Saudi/Iraq when in the USMC, was not good news. It took me a little over 20 years to find another one of that particular range and after putting my kids into college and whatever else, I can finally have my project again. My favorite years is 70 - 73. This video brought back some old memories and reminders of what I have to look foreword to. Thanks for the channel.

    Great job! I have a 76 Camaro that I rebushed the front end in. I just put in one spring, stock, today. It took three of us, a spring compressor, two ratchet straps and a floor jack to get back in. 18 inches of spring squished to 12 is he'll on wheels. The beer was well earned today!

    Very helpful, I needed to do the same, my tip would be to spray all the nuts with penetrating oil the night before, especially as I don’t have air tools, like most amateurs. It helps when removing corroded nuts..in the UK it rains, and hence more rust ☹️yes I have subscribed 😉

    It's IMPORTANT to note the floor jack MUST raise the lower control arm BEFORE removing the spindle nuts. If you don't then you may die. Your description nearly sounds like you do that because the top shock nut has been damaged ("this is what you do"). Tomorrow I'm pulling the front springs for the first time, on a 71 C-10. Thanks for the video, very helpful.

    Everyone needs to be aware: COIL SPRINGS can go through a brick wall while compressed and suddenly released. And many a shop guy have lost their lives. Know what your into and know what you are doing. Potentially fatal if wrong action is taken.

    I have seen someone at a speed shop try to remove a coil spring from a '56 Chevy and that spring jumped out and hit him square in the chest.It happened so quick he never seen it coming.He did luck out even though he broke all his ribs and sternum and took almost a year before he was able to do what he used to,BUT for some reason he shies away from doing frontend work....

    whats the difference or why would I need to buy lowered dropped spindles? do you recommend just buying the springs or do both?

    • @jakefriesenjake
      @jakefriesenjake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did both, around 15 years ago. I've been working on it for that long. Almost done now.
      I did 2" drop spindles and 1" ebach lowering springs. Just took the car out yesterday for the first test drive. My exhaust hits every bump. Now I just ordered 1/2" thick spring spacers (it raises the front bumper a full 1"). I also ordered 1/8" neoprene rubber sheet to make a spring cushion onto of the spring. That should add an additional 3/16" to a 1/4" increase in ride height.
      I don't know if the car just sitting for 15 years would make my springs sag.....
      But I regret the 1" drop springs.
      Cant wait for the second test drive to say the least!

    Hey Klowny,
    Great video. You mention another shock re and re video but I cant find it. Can I replace the front shocks on these cars without dropping the lower control arm?

  • @MrCbell57
    @MrCbell57 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The ride height does not look like it changed from factory height. . If you're installing a stiffer sport spring, it's also smart to upgrade to a performance shock designed to work with a higher spring rate. And finally, realize that when you're replacing sagging 30-year-old stock springs, some sport springs won't alter your car's ride height much. So lots of trouble for nothing. Best to get drop spindles. If not dropped spindles you could alter performance though if it is designed just to lower car and not be a stiffer spring. I'm sure you did your research. :) Thanks for great video!

      It lowers the car

    • @MrCbell57
      @MrCbell57 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are for lowering. The drop is meaning the spindle is mounted higher to the top, so you get a tire which moves higher to the fenders. Not lower. th-cam.com/video/BUo3VYApdMo/w-d-xo.html

    Great video. Not many of these good ones around. Good job. However I've never heard before of taping rubber hose to the top of spring? Anyone using rubber hose out there?. Not sure it would hold up. I guess it could change the ride height though. I've always just used grease to keep it from squeaking. Not sure what the rubber is for really. But I don't work on late model cars that have rubber above their springs. Great video.

    Good video. To make life easier, use a spring compressor. If you were re-installing the OEM stock springs without a spring compressor that would have been a major clown act!

    • @klowny1969
      @klowny1969  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol..i have done stock spring swaps without a spring compressor..the worst was putting stock springs on a tubular k member with tubular control arms..the springs weree severely bowed outwards when i was done haha

    • @giuseppeverdi1253
      @giuseppeverdi1253 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      klowny1969 Sometimes the stock springs tend to bow to one direction even with a spring compressor. I've always been a little nervous when removing/replacing front coil springs!

    I have a 1978 Camaro, and would love to lower my car, I am wheelchair bound, and it would make it easier to get in my car,, Its not too bad right now, but would be even better to lower it.. I just can't do that lowering leaf springs or front myself.

    • @thrashingmetal

      bad idea, I have mine lowered, I am raising it back to stock. My K-member just hit a 3in concrete bump at speed and the car jumped in the air.

    Good afternoon sir. i love all your videos and your really cool. i really apreciate all of your help. my sincerest and utmost respect. i have another couple questions that i only trust you to answer. i have a 78 el camino and soon it wont need smog here. im considering removing the air pump-smog pump. my cars are daily drivers and see alot of highway. will it be safe to run without the smog pump? and will i loose or gain any miles per gallon? thank you soo much for your time sir. the car is a 305.

    • @klowny1969
      @klowny1969  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Laiola it will be totally safe..the air pump just pumps air into the cat to aid it in bringing down the exhuast fumes..just becareful..if the inspection guy really wants to bust your balls, he might not pass you because they have to visually see all the smog equipment..but i doubt the inspection guy knows u should have a smog pump on that car

    You don't need to fight with the top shock bolt like that.. just drop a deep socket with an extension or a small piece of pipe down over the top of the shaft and rock the shit out of it back and forth. The shaft will break off before you get to a dozen rocks on it,no strength it it! below the nut and ,,your done :)
