  • this is a 55 vw 36hp engine that was in my 60 ragtop bug This car came to me so rusty that all the floors were gone in the car. the back half was so rusty that I had to change the whole rear section just to save the car. I was not sure if it would run or was any good. great watch and see if it runs.

    Absolutely priceless, it says in the "good book" that the meek shall inherit the earth, there is nothing meeker than a 36HP VW engine, they ALWAYS will run, just so wonderfully simple and reliable.

      Back years ago we just chucked them up into the attic of the shop we would just pull them out. at one point we had at least 30 of them. IDK what happened to those engines when My buddy closed the shop. He always said some day they would be worth some good money but right now they are worthless. OMG he was right. I pulled one down to put in my oval that I got with no engine. swapped the heads with another engine because they were bad and drove that car for a year with a 6 volt gen and a 12 volt regulator running 12 volts. No issues.

    interesting video......FWIW
    if the throttle plate is not opened up while cranking you will get low compression readings....starved for air.

Even the timing was pretty close. was actually hitting on all 4 after we ran it for about 5 minutes. not in the video. when I revved it was jumping off the stand. totally good motor.

    Your’e right about the distributor, Aug ‘63 - July ‘65 model years 👍🏻 without the vac advance having been brazed on obviously 😂 Reminds me of some of the strange previous repairs carried out by PO’s that I found on my ‘65 whilst restoring it here in the UK. Keep up the great content Mike!

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the Green 60 bug I restored had this engine in it. The funny thing is that it also had many 65 parts on it that they salvaged at some point. it had a 65 deck lid rear fenders and tail lights front hood distributor front turn signals and seems like bumpers too. Like they wrecked it then used parts from a 65 to keep it going.

    In the old Woodie Allen movie, Sleeper, hes been placed in a cryogenic tank and they find him 200 years later and thaw him out. Hes been asleep since the 60s. Now in the future hes running from the government and in a cave, finds an old bug. He finds that the keys are in it so he tries it and it starts right up ! After 200 years sitting . It was a joke on the dependbility of VWs .

    That's cool...I enjoy doing the same thing with my 36hp engines when I get time. That 1- case you just got fired up is an early 56'. Probably Aug 55' case. The drain plug is in the bottom of the case because those early cases had a oil screen plate without a drain plug. I'd be interested to see what you're compression numbers are after it's run for awhile. I bet they jumped up to 90-95 or so. Cool video!

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually was going to do that but I was so surprised that it started I forgot to put the after compression in the video. When it cranked over it was like no compression. I will look into those numbers. good to know.

    Usually the valves get stuck open. If you ever do a will it run video again , and you don’t have any compression. Take your valve cover off and roll the engine over until it’s where that cylinder would be ready to check the valves. You know the valve clearance . So you roll it over until the Cam lobes are not on the lifters.
    Then take yourself a mallet, wood or brass. And gently tap on the top of the valve. If it’s stuck it will continue to go in but it will not come out all all the way. Spray it with some lubricating oil. And keep tapping. Worst case scenario gently roll the engine over until the valve makes contact with a piston and then push the valve back with the piston ever so carefully. Continue this until the valve loosens up, you can tell because all the springs will be the same. And they won’t be compressed .
    The engine will probably make compression then, but probably not a lot until it’s run for a little bit.
    Cool video.
    I’m surprise you have the air intake clogged up with all those badges. I think that might significantly starve your engine for cool air. Do you have a dual port engine in the car? Because I don’t see louvers on your hood either. If you do those dual port engines need lots of air. Or they only last for about five Thousand miles.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      actually there is a significant gap between the badges and the grills. Plus they are angled so when you go down the road it is like a ram air effect. Motor runs cool even on the hottest day. 36hp all stock. thanks for watching and i have had that happen on the valve sticking issue. give them a little tap and they free up. if it didnt start up that was the next thing I was going to do. All good points and again thanks for the comment.

    I've only watched half the video so far but, I have a burning question. Other than trying to make an interesting TH-cam video, why try to start this engine at all? I have always just broken the whole engine down to see what is usable or not. And especially with water in the crankcase, and sludge found. Why would we continue to try to start it without breaking down the engine and thoroughly cleaning the crankcase and oil passages first?

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea true. Just wanted to see the condition of how it was. came out of a car that I bought and was wondering if they drove it that way until it rusted in 2. After hearing the engine run. I believe they did drive it till it rusted in half. ha ha. Yea I believe in tearing it down to see how much sludge is in there the condition of the case. In almost all air cooled mag case situations.
