      @@MortskeRepair First off, that guy is a real tool. Secondly, have you ever tried setting up an electrolysis tank to do rust removal? It's extremely easy, although you would have to tear the engine down into block n heads and such it, but it will strip only the rust down to bare metal with zero effort. It would probably work even better if you could set it up so the electrolyte is flowing through the passages .
      Now, a few things. I have used electrolysis to clean up intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, a water pump, and some various shop tools. I have no idea what it might do to, for example, a set of cam bearings. You would need to look into the details, but serisously in places where it works at all electrolysis is like freaking magic dealing with rusted parts. It's hard to over hype how easy it is and how easy it is to set it up. A few plastic tubs, a big chunk of scrap iron, a set of battery cables, a cheap battery charger and an old battery (you have to run the current from the battery charger through a battery to your object, because all these modern smart chargers will shut off if you try to run them direct.
      Also, the process produces a small amount of hydrogen gas. I would imagine your building is more than crafty enough that it would dissipate LONG before any dangerous concentration could happen, it's not much gas and thats a BFB, but you might contemplate it. I literally did it one winter in a small insulated work shed and came out to find my buddy casually lighting a smoke in there. He failed to fly into outer space, and I had been doing it out there specifically because it had no potential ignition sources like sparks or whatever... He was all like 'what sup with these fizzing plastic tubs', and then got offended when I grabbed his smoke right out of his face and ground it out. He settled down after I played him a video of the Hindenburg on my phone.
      So look into electrolysis, even if it doesn't suit your purposes here it's an amazing process and a real labour saver. And as for that guy bitching about the length of the videos, personally I would watch the hell out of a five hour mechanical video.

    You ask us to tell our build stories: Starting in 1963, I bought my first '55 Chevy Bell Air post. After I got out of the Navy, I built four more 210 series, customs and one Jim Hall 327 Chaparral, that beat every thing in it's class, including all hypo 427's. I'm 81-years young now and own a pristine '86 1/2 red Fiero GT that I have done two engine swaps; a 3.4 Camaro/Firebird V-6, and five years ago, a 300+hp 3800sc out of a 2003 Bonnevile. Built the way the original designers intended it to be, she puts in low 12 second quarter miles, but more impressive takes the circuit race tracks like a pro. She is a gorgeous fast little sports car, that beats most of the cars on the road, and gets excellent mileage while she is doing it. She is very roomy inside, and I call her "my quasi super car." I only have around $7k invested in her, having done all the work myself, she is more comfortable that most all the million-dollar Italian sports cars, and goes like hell...!

    Use CLR to remove rust. It's gentle enough for your coffee maker and dishwasher, so it should be fine on seals and gaskets.

      phosphoric acid it only eats rust not steel or iron and is way cheaper than clr and there brand name

      White vinegar seams to work good. Then put rocks or something in it and shake it around. For gas tanks I mean. Don't know how well it would work in heads or an engine block.

    Oh the joys of living where the weather sucks. I remember the cold winter weather when I lived outside Erie Pennsylvania for the first 25 years of my life. Been in Florida now for over 36 years and don't regret it one bit. I'll take the heat to the cold any day of the week

    My grandfather was a tanker in ww2, did tank recovery, and sometimes they would take pans of oil soaked wood and slide them under the engines and transmissions to warm them up in the winter. He said it didn't matter how stuck or how broken a tank was, he would rather be trying to start a frozen solid engine than getting a still warm one out of a field.
    At the time, I didn't actually get what he meant by that. Later on I learned that he had been in a crew that would pull disabled tanks out of active battles while under fire. Any enemy tank would love to take them out, and he had several medals and such for bravery including a battlefield commission to officer. Started as a private who could not read, after peace time he ran a training school for mechanics and recovery teams in the fifties. Never said a word about any of it, just that he 'was a mechanic'. One thing he did do was talk me out of joining the army. Told me to go to college instead. Should have listened to BOTH those pieces of advice maybe.

    From what I've been told, the water in the coolant mix is what does the heat transfer, or the bulk of it. The coolant is for raising the boiling point, lubricating the water pump, and keeping corrosion to a minimum. My neighbors have a 79 Ford E150 RV with a big ol camper top, and only a 302. It was overheating, especially when pulling a long hill in the SoCal summer. Has a newer aluminum radiator, and the rest of the system itself checked out, as did the ignition timing. Come to find out that someone had put straight ethelyne glycol coolant in it. I drained it and refilled with 50/50 ethelyne glycol and distilled water, and it does not overheat any more. I am 57 my Father passed last Boxing Day but by some way or other I had TH-cam on auto play, the video with you putting a new motor in your Fathers car came on and it really touched me, I looked after mine for the last 18.5 years. A year goes fast, he didn't want to be here anymore made 85, so had good life, it's difficult for me, more my buddy than Dad. Just wanted to say Good Job, Well Done. Putting new motor in yours car like that. The best to you.

    *Thanks for a year of free content Mortske 🤭👍. Can't beat free... White Vinegar left to sit a couple days then drained will loosen the scales. Or you can buy some goop to put in but your still going to have to do what you did ... Magnet, Flush, Blow the scale out. Take rad out and back flush it or recore. To keep the temp down after that run 1/2 " aluminum tubing to an oil cooler above the rear axle and back. Knocked 20° out of the BBC in my 47 Merc. You'll get to ad extra oil too. Cheers Man. 🍻👊😎👍🍻

    We had a cone fitting that went in the lower hose that had a garden hose swivel and an air nozzle.
    Pull the thermostat, fill it with water, blast shop air into it. Loop the heater hoses so it doesn't get plugged.

    For removing rust, you can use Evaporust. It works even better if you heat it up, so running it through an engine would be ideal. If you want to cheap out, you can just make a solution of EDTA

    Father in law had a vw motor connected to a gen set, powered the farm with a cheap, easy to maintain motor, air cooled and economical to run. Mounted to a trailer, it could even be portable.

    Living in Michigan's upper peninsula I feel for you, I thought we suffered from the frozen tundra of the great white north but I think you have us beat. We have been crazy warm, 45 on Christmas here and yesterday I pulled a tick off my springer Winston. Just remember if it don't kill you it will make you stronger, great content and Duff is awesome.     Man there's nothing like the sound of a flathead. Hope to see this truck a lot more and for you to put many happy miles on it. Someday I will have a 35/36 Ford Pickup all stock to take to the Newport Hill Climb in Newport Indiana and run it in honor of my Grandpa. The last vehicle he ran up the hill was his 35 Ford Pickup and he ran it for almost 20 years consecutively.

    Quick tip for any flathead. To remove the head take a 12" length of 1/4" cloths line and feed 1 length into every spark plug hole and spin her over. the head will be sitting an inch off the deck in no time. My project is a 1968 C10, all steel, cammed 5.3LS with a 700r4, 3:73 posi rear. Front disks, exhaust and the big one, the fuel system left to do once the weather breaks. I stuck with the FI, I've done it before on a couple swaps but going with an in-tank pump this time. Not hard, just time consuming. Hope to have it running down the boulevard by Memorial Day. Best laid plans .....

    Two water pumps because flat head V8s were always notorious for overheating, so you're starting off on a bad foot. We used Rodol when I worked on underground locomotives. Pull the pumps and check them and have the radiator re-cored as the bottom is likely blocked. Try CLR.

    You are working on my all time favorite pick up. Yes straight water does transfer heat more efficiently, also don't paint aluminum radiators, paint will slow down heat to air exchange. Btw 'radiators' are not really radiators there correct name is heat exchanges.

      I worked on race car radiators water and oil coolers only in aluminum for tens years or so, I thought some people might be interested. I apologise if I have offended you with my spelling I'm only a welder.

      If you add just a little light oil to the water, it will help prevent the rust...! All the old timer radiator rebuilders did this as a standard procedure...!

    Thanks for the shout out on the boxed cap! It has its pride of place all the way down in Africa now.
    If it has not been mentioned, white vinegar is acidic enough to clean out the block and radiator well without being too harsh on seals, etc. Ol' Greta will also not be able to complain since it's 100% natural.

    Looking forward to another year of your videos! Happy New Year! The video triggered memories of growing up with no garage and just a lumpy gravel driveway in a western Chicago suburb during some bad winters running the car every couple of hours during the night so it would start on the morning and laying a trouble light on the engine and then covering it with an old quilt. When it got really cold I had to take a metal garbage can lid and start a few charcoal briquettes in it and slide it under the oil pan! So lucky to have a garage with its own furnace today!

    Happy New Year to you Sir. Really enjoy your videos. Projects for 2024 - keep improving '94 Mustang GT convertible driver (currently waiting on headlight switch and CCRM - headlights shut off intermittently and I have to find sweet spot between parking light and headlight position on switch to get them both to work. CCRM - problem with fuel pump fuse causes parasitic draw which drains the battery overnight. Current fix - kill switch. But I still drive it. Project 2 - '93 Mustang LX with LS/4L80E swap. (bought the car as a roller with 35 spline and spool drag rear suspension) Got it running, sounds strong but head gasket (was a junkyard 5.3) leaking water. Also rear main leak. So I've got some work for 2024.

    Use white cleaning vinegar for rust. Works great for soaking rusty tools in too. It will separate the good from the cheap tools if you soak them long enough.

      Correct for all metals (cast, aluminum, copper, stainless, but continue to use regular water flush the engine several times. Note: Radiator should be detached from the engine for a separate cleaning. Suggestion: Even Greta could use a good cleaning, since it will be environmental - TWO FOLD.

    There is something about old flatheads that hold a special place in my heart. I have a 51 Plymouth with the L head 6 and you cant kill that engine. I am not well versed on the flathead V8 , but I know a little. And that had an A on the head. Thats an earlier one, right? The AB came later in the 40s? Correct me if I am wrong. I love learning knew stuffs. Keep up the good work Mortske. Love the content. Happy New Year

    I’ve never seen it done, but I was thinking maybe you could make a tea handle that screws down into the spark, plug holes and be able to pull up on it just a thought It would probably help you reinstall it also

    In the shop i work in, we have used CLR with great success in cleaning out plugged up heater cores. I personally havent seen it used in like an engine block or radiator. What ive done is removed the hoses for the heater core, plugged one of the inlets and filled CLR in there and just let it sit. Flush with water and repeat and thats worked. I dunno if youve ever heard of an automotive product called BG, but another shop i worked in used BG exclusively, and BG makes a cooling system cleaner and treatment. Not super easy on the pocket book but you dump in the cleaner and i think it says to run for like 10 mins or maybe 20 mins? Anyways run this stuff through and then flush. BG makes a hell of a product. Maybe worth a shot? By the way loved the dodge on the last vid! Thanks for all the content you are indeed the man!!

    LOVE the long videos!!!!! What am I working on this year? I have a '95 Firebird Formula convertible that is in mint shape ( 85K miles ). I am building a 383 ( the only stock parts are the block and timing cover, hoping for about 450 horse ) for it along with a built 4L60E ( have a bad left knee so a manual is out ). Have a Mosser 12 bolt with 3:42 posi. Full UMI/BMR suspension. The big 12" '98 - '02 brakes and Bilstien shocks.
    Love flatheads. Not much power, but cool nonetheless.........

    I agree with the CLR. As I’m watching you I’m also reminded of my auto shop class back in 75, when we were taught to do a reverse flush in order to break down the rust scales in the block. Just a thought. Carry on my wayward friend.

    Mortske, I'd put your hammer ice release video up against puddings pressure washer anytime! I'm in San Francisco where it's freezing at 50°! Lol. Love those old pickups, Flathead v8s. There were still a few around when I was growing up. Always thought they sounded nice. Hope you had a great Christmas and I know you're going to have a great New Year. You're just getting more popular, (or should I say Duff is?)

    Clean the core sand out of the block on each side. Ford usually left some in the block after casting. It should help cooling.

    I don't know if machine shops still do it, but the few I went to had big tanks filled with a solution of water and lye heated to about 200 degrees and the tank would agitate the parts. They came out like brand new, all rust, scale, dirt and grease removed we did have a engine this bad, we stripped it down and took the block and heads and had them dipped, when we got them back we reassembled the engine and no more overheating.

    Studebaker had problems with the rear of the heads getting plugged up with rust. Studebaker made an engine cleaning solution that I’ve had really good luck with. I’ve got a couple of cans id be willing to send you if you’re interested.

    I had a 76 Datsun 620 that I picked up in 2016, but sat since 1989 in california.. When I removed the waterpump, it was rusted solid, and the entire cooling port was filled with rusty dust.. I flushed the hell out of the engine by stuffing a garden hose into the inlet, and ran the engine. Never had cooling issues with that truck for 50k miles. I find that having the cooling system flushing but open with a garden hose works really good.

    Heya Mortske. You've given me a 2-hour-plus video this week, so I wrote you a book. Hope it gives you a laugh or two......and doesn't take you as long to read!
    Whatever you do, DON'T get rid of the crashbox in that old pickup! She's magical - such a musical set of gears in that thing......and they are always great for comedic content and when you're out with a mate and start putting money on whether the next gear change will crunch or not. Crashboxes are supposed to grind until they fit - that is unless you are perfect with your timing between the gears and catch it when the revs are just right. They will put up with a lot of crap, those things....and that flathead and crashbox combo brings back a lot of good memories for me.
    Just for ref., pipe cleaners were used to clean the old man's tobacco pipe. There's (obviously) a small tunnel between where the tobacco sits in the bowl at the end and where the mouthpiece is. Over time, it gets all sorts of tar, ash and sediment deposits in it that eventually stop the smoke going through as well, so they devised a piece of wire covered in bristles that went up the pipe periodically and gave it a colonoscopy. There are huge versions of that setup which are occasionally used on the council sewers as well, but be buggered if I'd want to be the one to do it......or even be around the area when they do it...!!
    Yeah, I dunno what it is about modern gauge makers - or is it modern engines that need them higher figures? No idea - but when I see oil pressure gauges that go to 150PSI, rev counters that go to 15,000RPM and temp gauges that go to 300F / 150C - ie: MANY MILES above anything I would ever need to see in cars I have or know about or would want - then I wonder wtf their manufacturers were thinking. Maybe they had a bunch where they just calibrated the face to read what the needle said rather than calibrate the internals so the needle read in the generally accepted range.
    I mean, what engine is still going to be performing well at 260F...and if it has gone nuclear, what good is it going to be for you to know by how much? Again, if I'm getting more than 80PSI flowing around the oil galleries, the needle being pegged at the end of the gauge will tell me there's something wrong with the governor - I don't need to know it actually hit 147PSI before the oil filter launched through the steering box and took out the left front wheel. As for an engine that hits 15k rpm, it's only bikes, rotaries and Formula 1 engines that need that sort of range, isn't it? And the irritating noises those things make made me lose interest in them real quick many years ago. How is there a market for these big-numbered gauges? Who is it that NEEDS to pull 150PSI at 15k rpm while the engine is defying he laws of physics and staying together at 260F? Buggered if I know....but I wouldn't think there would be as big a market for them as there seems to be.
    Gimme a 7 or 8k rpm tach, an 80 PSI oil pressure gauge and a 220 / 230F temp gauge and I'm happy. At least then I can then see a minute change in temp or oil pressure that might indicate I have an issue and I can tell by the rise and fall of the oil gauge as to where the problem is likely to be in the engine.
    Geez - any idea why my kids call me Korotiotio? Grumpy old bastard......
    Tech tip on stopping water getting into your distributor: put some Vaseline or grease around the lip the cap sits on or better still, on the lip all the way around the cap itself and water can't get past it. Vaseline does tend to melt off any excess when the engine gets warm, so try not to get it on the inside of the cap because at best it will lubricate the shaft and the weights and at worst, get between the points or the rotor and cylinder nodules on the cap and ruin your day. I've also put the cap on and then smeared grease around the join between the cap and the base and had the only Mini that could drive through a puddle without stopping.
    On overheating: Yep - that crap building up in the water galleries is a definite issue with the old cast iron blocks....and worse with some than others - especially where people have only used water in the thing. I had an Austin A55 that had an overheating issue and my Dad used to brew his own beer (stay with me on this....). He brewed one batch - Brew 14 - that was so feisty that it exploded several bottles while it sat ageing. Popping the cap off one to test, it fizzed and carried on like it had a permanent CO2 hose connection. Poured into a glass, the stuff looked like ginger beer and even before it got to your mouth to taste, it smelt like someone had poured a whole bottle of seltzer tablets in it. In short - it was undrinkable. However, on the upside, it did clean and polish a pewter mug it was put in and re-minted any coins it came in contact with. So, with that in mind, we brought the old Austin over, emptied her cooling system and filled her up with Brew 14. I took her for a run around the block and the old car smelled like a brewing factory when I got it home.....but in emptying out the cooling system again, I was astounded t the crap that Brew 14 had dislodged and that flowed out of it, when the usual flushing methods had previously done nothing to solve the overheating. Refilled the cooling system and she ran perfectly - and even had a working heater for the first time in my ownership! Dunno what happened to the rest of it, but that brew was a superior form of cooling system flush, that's for sure.
    Hey - just as Puddin' has his pressure-washing (pressure-watching?) shenanigans, you could get creative with the ice removal! There's a GOOD point of difference! As you say, it looks so satisfying. Being someone that has never lived in that cold a climate......ever.....I cannot relate to the "fun" that must be endured when the power wires ice up so bad that they collapse poles with the weight. Around here, poles only usually come down with the help of a Honda Civic driven at speed by a boy racer. We've still had times where power has gone out for a couple of hours, but not a couple of days or a week.....except back in 1997 when several main transformers blew in the Auckland CBD and took out half of the central business district. Then a week later another one went and due to the sudden shift in load, it caused a cascade failure on two more and the whole of the Auckland CBD power grid went down. Parts of the central city and surrounding suburbs were without power for a month. Sadly for me, the place I worked was only out for a day and a half over a weekend, so it was just business as usual...although the traffic was lighter for the duration. Doesn't compare with what you blokes go through every year though - and I love how you all cobble something together like one big family to make things work for each other. There's too little of that camaraderie and 'help they neighbour' spirit in the world, man. Selfishness seems to be a way of life in the bigger cities and it's just not necessary....and I don't like it one bit. Doesn't stop me helping out where I can anyway either. Getting out of it in the next couple of years, I hope too.....but bear that ice-breaking idea in mind. Could be onto something there....
    What will I be working on in 2024? Well, I want to get the Triumph Stag to the point where I am happy enough to put it up for sale for what I want for it. A bit of bodywork and farting about with fiddly stuff - cosmetic mainly. Then I am going to be getting my Triumph 2500S running again and back on the road. She has front brake calipers sticking and her carbs have filled up with crap while sitting thanks to the quality fuel we have these days, so now she floods like mad when I try to start her and wont idle, so they need doing before anything else. The brake master is a bit weepy too, so I will do that when I do the calipers. There's a bit of electrical work and I want to change the universal joints on the driveshaft so it loses the half inch of play it has and stops clunking when I change gear. Then the 1977 Mini is in for wheel bearings, engine mounts and a conversion to a twin-line brake master cylinder and metering unit because its disk brakes wouldn't stop a peddle car. It also has a fair bit of rust popping out on it now from sitting out in the humid weather for two years and that will need addressed before it goes for inspection. Then I am going to sell the Mini as well and start work on the project Mini I have been ignoring in the back of the workshop.....or maybe I will just sell that project and buy another running classic instead. That ought to keep me busy for most of the year, I reckon. Well, that and watching these long videos of yours, mate!

    I’m working on an 06 plate (2006) Mini Cooper S which is enjoying some overheating issues. Currently running without a thermostat and a bypass (with toggle switch in the cabin) for the radiator fan because the temp sender is knackered! I’ve sheered two bolts off the carrier hub in the last 6 months on jobs that “should just take half an hour” 😂 all that said I’ve learned A LOT about Mini Cooper R53’s !     Ok couple of weird and somewhat messy tricks.
    1 foaming coil /condenser cleaner . It's great for direct access and pinpoint locations .
    2 white vinegar and baking soda . Great for engines with water pumps removed . Pour white vinegar in water inlet until it starts to run out of block plugs ( removed ) then use a funnel to dump baking soda in the inlet and watch it power thru the block . It's messy but it helps loosen and blow out the rust . Happy New Year . Stay warm stay safe .

    My project for the year is finally getting my grandfather's 1940 Ford 2 door sedan with a flatty in it driving for the first time since the mid 80s. We're planning a trip to Traverse City in August with that 40 Ford when Michigan lets people with antique plates drive however many miles they want.
