@@urahara64360It's good? What else.
If I remember right, one of the things that Rebecca Sugar and the crew did was deliberately make the wedding episode insanely plot relevant to the series, what with the Diamonds invading and the reveal of Steven as Pink's son. So if that particular episode got banned in other countries, as it did, then people would still have to look it up to see what plotlines occured.
I don't like steven universe but this is pure dedication right there.
Rebecca "Chad" Sugar
It is better than that, because Ruby was retconned as a male in some translations.
So Ruby wore the wedding dress AND the episode was extremely plot relevant, so other countries couldn't just make Ruby a male and cutting the episode was also problematic.
@@eddiek6390 yea like in mine (middle east)
I always saw ruby as male, even though they say otherwise. So, her being in the dress was still extremely odd to me.

It's interesting to think that Steven Universe crawled so that the Owl House could run in regards to dealing with rushed finales due to corporate meddling.
I mean, at least Disney let Dana have an extra three episodes after season two instead of forcing her to end it with Season 2
Well corporate meddling isn’t exactly to blame for either. Both companies are very upfront with what happens to the shows that depict these sorts of things. And it’s not like they’re banning it from being made, they let the episodes air, but when the episodes do air, the show gets banned in loads of countries, costing the shows their budget. And now the show can’t pay animators, script writers, and whatever else they need. And the companies can’t stop that.
@@venomouskoala0690 China and India are really the major deciders on that, and both of them are vehemently anti-lgbt (India less so) so yeah it definitely would make a difference in the show’s success

Ok but I why do I want to see that now. Please picture it, Ruby in a wedding dress, BIG HUGE 🥸style cartoony mustache. Peak cinema.

Im sorry, im still horrified that it took until 2015 for America "land of the free" to allow gay marriage
No, 2015 is when the Supreme Court forced every state to accept it. Many had voted to allow it beforehand. But hey you’d know that if you were either American or bothered to put five seconds of research into the topic.
I did, and my comment was being generous, by the final supreme court ruling 26% of states were FORCED to not openly be homophobes.

No, it’s because foreign markets wouldn’t accept this, since their religions like Judaism, or Christianity or Islam does not support homosexuality and think of it as a sin, therefore cutting its costs, and that’s why it ended.

You are automatically based for acknowledging the actual reason behind the rushing instead of blaming it on the show’s crew like most others do lol
If we’re being technical it is still the crew’s fault because they were given a warning
Yeh they lost a lot of ppls jobs over their pettiness 😂
@@07W Because a show deep in its 5th season is safe in this climate. Most shows make it to 3 seasons and are cancelled. They would have lost their jobs anyway so why couldn't they choose to? I mean with fair warning the crew had time to look for other jobs anyway instead of the show just getting axed randomly.
I mean… this perfectly fine reason as to why the ending was bad and rushed still doesn’t make the ending *not* bad and rushed. There wasn’t much the crew could do to avoid that given the situation, but the ending still sucks ass.
It was the Crew fault, they chose the message they wanted to give, rather than the story they were telling.
It's sad but yeah, I figured that's what the nail in the coffin was. It's why I'm so gentle with the ending.
Knowing this makes me rethink the show, it probably could've been better in general without all the restrictions put on them by the executives
Honestly I’ve always been less harsh on cartoons with queer characters. There’s just so much pushback from so many people and it feels like each cartoon is a stepping stone for another cartoon to be more explicit with its queer characters. Without shows like Legend of Korra, Steven universe, and svtfo, we’d never have the owl house, the later seasons of adventure time (and it’s bubbline spin off), or even shera. I have my own problems with Rebecca Sugar, but they and the crew have my respect for not backing down on this one
@@Rebecca-bk9bd id bd gentle too but then they made unjverse and their mental health representation is just so bad and atrocious i can no longer be gentle
Yeah, I really don’t understand why some people are so damn harsh on the ending even while understanding the extreme circumstances it was made under. There was only so much they could do with what they were given.
@@pyro1830 are you talking about future? because… huh? future’s depiction of mental health and ptsd is so accurate that it actively made me uncomfortable because it reminded me too much of my own struggles. i am pretty mad we didn’t get to see any of the healing process on screen, but its depiction of mental health was very accurate.
I had heard that the reason they decided to put the diamonds coming to earth and their battle with the gems, inside the wedding episode was so that the episode couldn't be skipped or removed, it needed to be watched to understand the story.
So I have the book shown in the video and to summarize they said that there was a lot of push back when trying to pitch the wedding. One claim they got was "kids wouldn't find it exciting" and that's how it turned into a big action packed episode coupled with an amazing musical number. Also unrelated but the higher up people were apparently reaching so hard that they tried to claim that it'd be out of character for Steven to like weddings... despite his love for weddings
@@basicallyperidot5299 That would completely go against his entire personality. I mean, that’s LITERALLY the plot of Open Book. 🥲

Another thing: Steven Universe: Future was only greenlit because the movie did good. Even then, it was only given 20 eleven-minute episodes, causing many storylines to be cut or abruptly end in order to tie all the loose ends together before the last episode.
That’s not true actually; Cartoon Network green lit the movie on the condition that there would be an epilogue series (because to them a movie only serves to advertise more content) I’m guessing the movie only got green lit cause Battle of Hearts and Minds did as well as it did
Wait... YOU MEAN WE COULD HAVE HAD MORE STEVEN UNIVERSE AND A BETTER ENDING?!!!!! I HAD NO IDEA!! THATS SO SAD IT WOULDVE BEEN SO GOOD
They could have had it at the finale
Same could applied to the owl house
@bry_dawg027 The problem with that is that if the wedding was in the finale, cooperate would have definitely cut it off completely. Rebecca put the wedding with a plot relevant episode so it wouldn't get cut and they had to show it or else people would miss big plot.
@@bluewolf6323 they had this episode + 6 more. It shouldn't be so hard to add this part to another plot relevant episode.
@pando0884 Like I said, they had to fight for the wedding scene in general. They probably did have the plan to add the wedding scene earlier or later, but they couldn't because it would've gotten cut. Although there were 6 more episodes, with the way the show worked out, there still would've been a slight slow burn to build up to the finale. 6 episodes? To wrap up a show that was canceled? That is not enough, especially since, yes, they did have to add that plot line of the Diamonds coming down. They probably already had to cut out so many things to get the show running more so that they could get the episodes out. While yes, 6 episodes should be enough, there's a difference between time crunch and genuine passion. The Crewniverse had enough passion and forethought to put the wedding in an episode where it was important. However, there was a time limit to how much could be shown after that. Maybe 2 more episodes would help the ending, but the time crunch dictated and hung over the Crewniverse. They had to get everything out fast, basically being rushed to finish up plot threads and leave some more hanging that could not be solved because they didn't know they were given a movie and a TV series. All I'm saying is, they were screwed either way all because the cooperates did what they did and basically rushed a plot that was already scrambling, I will not lie.

Solution: most people I know thought Ruby was male anyway, so just play on that in the dubs. He/She acted masculine anyway, and doesn't show stereotypical feminine traits anyway, so it's an easy fix. Sugar gave Ruby a wedding dress as a middle finger, but you can simply mask that as drag. Many shows have male characters wear female clothing as a joke, and I've seen shows where a stereotypical Andrew Tate sigma/alpha style male goes full in obsessing with the female clothing, so it could have easily been masked as one of those cases. Idk, seems like an easy fix.
@@cerebrummaximus3762 the point was to explicitly state “these two characters are in a same sex relationship. You will NOT censor this by trying to mask one of them as male to avoid the topic.”
By making Ruby male, you miss the ENTIRE POINT of what made Garnet such a good character. Their relationship was forbidden in the show for reasons unrelated to their homosexuality, but the “forbidden” nature of their relationship was an lgbt allegory the entire time.
@@cosmo-dragon3973 That is not what made Garnet a good character. Ruby and Sapphire's relationship was made well, regardless if they are Heterosexual or not. Sugar tried to push a neo-lib agenda to a world that isn't "ready", and got rebuked. If CN had the power, they should have simply limited this, rather than cancelling the show. There genuinely wouldn't be much difference on Ruby's gender. Not once did the show go meta mentioning Ruby being a female and the untraditional marriage wasn't even put to question in-show. I must give it to Sugar, well done to Sugar for avoiding self-centring on Ruby and Sapphire being lesbian, and letting the relationship flow without mentioning or putting on topic their sexuality, the reverse dressing during the marriage truly was a middle finger, but one that was unnecessary, however.
@@cerebrummaximus3762 i don’t think you realize that Sugar herself would SEVERELY disagree with you. Gay marriage isn’t “neo-liberal agenda” and Sugar herself pushed HEAVILY for the show to recognize Ruby and Saphire’s relationship as a same-sex relationship. The fact that she stuck to her principles and wouldn’t back down on the “neo-liberal agenda” was why the show was cancelled AT ALL in the first place.
You think Sugar agrees with you, but she’d probably call you an a**hole and tell you to go f**k yourself for even suggesting that she should erase Ruby and Sapphire’s gay relationship just to appeal to right wing nutcases who think being gay is “political.”

Plot-heavy cartoons are usually frowned upon by networks. Many cartoons are meant to be episodic in nature with self contained plots that appeal to wide audiences, rather than overarching stories that require context. Even "filler episodes" gave us moments of character growth and bonding. SU isn't an anime. It should've been allowed to go at its own pace, with it getting seasons for however long people continued to enjoy it like every other cartoon rather than being slammed for the messages it was trying to promote.

Fucking around for 50 episodes before doing something that probably ends your show on the spot is beyond dumb, maybe they did that on purpose to be like "Hey Cartoon Network, we still have all these unresolved things in the plot that go no where, so you gotta give us more episodes" but if thats the case it backfired hard.
Again, respect for taking the risk and doing whats right, I rather have the marriage and a rushed ending than a good ending without it tbh but the execution was pretty eh.
Off topic, but it’s crazy that gay marriage was only legalized here 8 years ago 💀
No wonder there are still a disappointingly high amount of 'phobes around

I actually didnt Get the feeling it was rushed😁 i think they did a really good job
People give the show shit because of how it was displayed but they just don't know the absolute hell Rebecca and the crew went through to get the show to finish
I'm not a huge fan of Steven Universe
but hearing about this is just, really sad
honestly.
the show's perception in the public was greatly hurt by the rushed ending
I grew out of Steven Universe years ago, but I'm sure that if it got a better ending it would hold a much better place in my heart. This is one of the few shows out there that I would kill for to get a better ending.
And honestly the finale, even though you can feel it's rushed, is still great. The confrontation between Steven and White Diamond still gives me chills.
I hope we have a Lapis and Peridot spin-off one day.
If it's a comedy, they should base it on Sanford & Son.
that or a spin off with Lars and the Off Colors on space adventures
@@vidform Sort of. I would love to see Lapis and Peridot go on an intergalactic journey where Lapis meets an equal (a Turquoise perhaps?).
@@majamystic256 perhaps a crossover during the Lapis and Peridot show.
I'm still mad we didn't get at least one Nephrite/Centipeedle centered episode in SUF
So weird that they ended up cutting Steven Universe short only to give them a movie and epilogue series almost immediately after. Although to be fair, both the Movie and Future didn't really feature anything that would get it censored overseas. Or at least I don't think they did?
Not to mention that CN weighed in a lot of the time during the production of the movie. They were the ones who wanted to have an “end of the world” high-stakes plot, and thankfully the Crewniverse gave us a wonderful movie out of that. As for SUF, that was on Rebecca Sugar who wanted to focus on mental health aspects and healing from trauma, which would have worked out wonderfully had we gotten more episodes to conclude the series with. I’m not complaining, though. They managed to get an ending and did what they loved, which is all I could ask for, but still, it makes you wonder how differently things could’ve turned out if the show got a proper ending to the season.
They were able to get an epilogue because they didn't just want to leave it off with the movie. Or so I heard.
The movie was great in my opinion
Yeah, I remember getting into an argument with someone who claimed Steven Universe was bad, and only kept going because of the “Gay agender!!!”
Thank you man. I genuinely was sad at the ending and was curious on why it ended that way for the LONGEST time.
It was banned because it was too gay (as if there’s such a thing)

any gay is too gay
man, if I had a nickel for every show that was cancelled for being too gay I would have... actually way more then 2 nickels

@@ladyilex yes obviously but if even after getting cancelled, future happened.
In a world where they didn't get cancelled and they wanted Future to happen it would've been easier, and the ending wouldn't have been rushed.
I do like how you empathize with both sides, i love cartoons and representation, specially in the time this was made, is so important but at the end of the day its a business first and foremost, they told them the risks and they shot anyway
I think it came out well enough tbh
So they rushed to end the show cuz' of Homophobes? Damn!
I hate homophobes. Like, mind your own damn business, man.
I never knew that happened.. I’ve only ever seen clips of this show. To know the ending was rushed kinda dampens the desire to watch it fully.
still watch it plus the movie and the sequel show
Rushed or not, I always found the ending super satisfying that hit almost everything it was building up to.

For anybody who wants tips for FNaF 1: ignore Foxy, focus entirely on Freddy, Foxy doesn't need you to straight up stare at him, he needs you to just look at the cameras, meaning you should stare at Freddy in order to stall both of them, this fails on 20/20/20/20 mode though, because Freddy moves too fast to be stalled

This is a Steven Universe episode, not Five Nights at Freddy's.
Wrong video. This happened to me too.
For a second I thought I was dreaming 😂
Imagine if we as humans didnt section ourselves into our own bubbles and tiny communities chooding to view everyone else as the "other," and instead valued all living beings life experiences and seeking to increase the overall happiness contentment and wellbeing of others and ourselves.
Same sex relations does not introduce any suffering into the world, but trying to snuff out same sex relations certainly does. If we never had homophobia we would have avoided immense suffering. If we didnt judge others on appearance or who they choose to love or what gender they are or what skin color they have etc, and instead focused on how a persons behavior and actions affect the ones around them, we would avoid so much injustice and needless prejudice.
I hope one day humanity puts aside the desire for tribalism and othering. It may have served our ancestors and helped them to survive but in the modern ages, we should all be more understanding and educating ourselves on how other people experience the world/what has harmed others and what has helped others.

@@ItchyBurritoMiniAltThingyWhat JetowTone said, and also aids are able to be heavily treated and prevented now thanks to modern science. The fact aids even became a tool for homophobia is like when people turned COVID into a tool to hate the Asian population, instead of simply feeling sorry for the victims, like you should, they turned it into something to hate a minority for. The funny thing is, I lost an uncle to aids, and the only reason he didn't survive was because he refused treatment.
