    I'm an old school audio engineering geek. So when I watch your videos and hear your technical knowledge and proficiency, you get automatic points for that.
    I've been subscribed now for about 3 months and not one of your videos disappointed. well made, information is spot on. Hell you even schooled me on a few things that I either didn't know or forgot. 35+ years doing this and some things slip through the cracks lol
    keep up the excellent work.

    after youtube mashes it a bit its just a transient clarity thing, im just getting smearing details the oxford is sharper the izo flatter and the fab duller lol, the sonnox bounces out better to mp3

    I love the Fab filter stuff. I add a clipper first and chop off snares and then add a limiter and I am golden.

    • @Koosa-kq2hv
      @Koosa-kq2hv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put a clipper before my limiter about 98.99% of the time, saturate those peaks and then limit them.😎

    Nice video. I own all three of these and a few more limiters, but these are the three I use. Typically I use them for color. I don't think one is better than the other, just different.
    Like you I like the Oxford because it has a thickening affect when needed. Sometimes that isn't what one is going for though and that is where the Pro-L2 comes in. I'll use the Pro-L2 when I want something cleaner. It sounds more like the source material.
    Whenever I master something I'll use either placed before the Ozone Maximizer. I typically like to split the reduction between two limiters. Personally I think it sounds better. According to the genre I'll sometimes use a Clipper before the limiters to shave a few peaks off to gain more perceived volume if the artist wants it. Typically that will be Big Clipper by Boz Digital.
    I saw you had the Ozone set to -9 Lufs.
    Is that your normal target?

    In my experience Pro L2 is kind of flat, which could be a good thing. Ozone Maximizer has a better texture or depth, but I don't like the layout/metering. I'd never used the Oxford Limiter, but I feel like it sounded the best out of the 3. Hilariously, my mastering chain ends with a Waves L2 into a Fabfilter ProL2.

      @emily_bowie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s some great insight! I also think the Pro L2 fell a little behind the others. At least for this particular song. And that’s awesome, I do see folks using two limiters back to back. Thanks so much for watching!

  • @MKD371

    I use a multiband comp from mcdsp, which feeds into two L2 Limiters. The limiters are split into stereo left and right so that if there is a major floor tom hit it doesn't attenuate. Granted in a master that shouldn't be happening lol, but this is a neat trick to making the L2 sound more acoustic like its hardware counterpart. I then mute the right channel on the first limiter and mute the left channel on the second limiter so that left and right is split across the two limiters. Some would say why not just split one limiter? For whatever reason the trick in making it sound more open and relaxed and forgiving is doing it the aforementioned way, who knew? While some limiters which endless controls can be useful, I find using a simple set and forget limiter usually is more helpful to the mix, the less done with peak limiting the better, IMHO.

    I think in this way of using the limiter (which I do the same thing in mixing) you might have to slightly re-adjust your mix after you add the limiter. After all it is a new element added to the EQ/Comp/Saturation process. I think you could even end up adding a little bit more punch to your mix by readjusting after the limiter is added. Limiters love to boost bottom end which messes up the mix a little. A 2-buss EQ before the limiter may also be needed to compensate for what you don't like after the limiter gets a hold of it. All of these limiters presented in the video will work, I think it may be a process of what you are sending to the limiters. BTW - One of my favorite Nashville mixers (Jeff Balding) swears by the Oxford.

    I was pretty impressed by the free Limited Z limiter by LVC-Audio...very nice and clean (though it has other options) just as the Pro L2 as far as the colour, also they have a paid version. Great to throw on when using serial limiting.

    Hi Emily, enjoying the channel. The Oxford limiter seems to add some mid-range crunch and presence which can definitely help some tracks but doesn't seem to fit this one. It seemed to make the vocals "pokey", as you like to say. The fabfilter was pretty decent, I agree with you on the "modern" seeing, but it didn't do a lot for me. Maybe it's a better limiter for stems and busses. I thought the iZotope fit this track the best, surprisingly. The vocal seemed to sit in the mix much better and the top end, especially in the sides, like the ride cymbal, sounded much clearer, a little more air in there. I don't know, that's just my two cents. Anyway, keep up the good work!

    I use Fab and Ozone and both are good, but it all depends on Genre, the recording and many other factors that makes the song. For this one, I think Ozone is the winner (for my taste), I hear more clarity and separation in the mix.

    • @emily_bowie
      @emily_bowie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you’re absolutely right, Joe. They can all shine on different types of songs. And that might be the main take away of this and that it is good to have options. I also think the Ozone Maximizer sounds great on this particular track. And many others! Thanks so much for watching!

    Hello Emily ok personally I thought the Oxford sounds the more colourful I can hear more dynamic range but the fab filter did even out the track slightly better and izotope was very similar to fab but on a personal level I like the Oxford it sounds more natural to me and not squashed I personally use hear in England IK MULTI MEDIA MASTERING SUITE for all my mix n mastering thanks for sharing best wishes Phil 👍🌹🌹

    Confession up front: I have only demo'ed FabFilter stuff... because I can't afford to get their whole series of excellent plugins! Oxford Limiter was my go-to limiter too for a while. I find the Ozone/Izotope just OK. PA's TruePeak is a good option; also sonible's smart:limit which, using their AI, almost feels like cheating! But it's also sneakily and easily customizable. The one I probably still underuse, especially for a modern sound, is Newfangled Audio's Elevate!

    Kind of a toss up between the Maximizer and FabFilter Pro L2
    I agree that the Oxford is beefier. But it doesn't put out the clarity on your top end as the other two.
    I personally own both the Maximizer and FabFilter Pro L2.
    I tend to use the FabFilter Pro L2 more. Mostly because I'm used to FabFilter's stuff.
    I purchased their Total Bundle, which includes the L2 Pro. I use almost all of the included software titles, especially the Pro-Q 3.
    The maximizer is mostly used for mastering.
    So if I were going to make a recommendation, my choice would be FabFilter. They've knocked it out of the park with all of their stuff in my opinion. Getting the Total Bundle was the best option for me as buying the ones I for sure wanted would have cost me 400 more than what I paid for the whole bundle.

    Sonnox has its own sound IMO... that's why I never really liked it. Fabfilter sounds more transparent to me. But the newer multiband limiters like DMG Limitless or Newfangled Elevate are better
