    Spring Schedule
    Our schedule may very, but expect a new video every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday!
    How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
    How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

    Cows that are great at kicking, that kick is often their first line of defense. Mark all the unbread cows. then with one of those long rods they used at auction try and come up behind and see which cow has that kick reaction. Grew up on a dairy farm, one cow we nicked named "kicker" she would let you have it as soon as she thought you were in range.

    • @plowboy7700
      @plowboy7700 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnhaas2523 doesn't matter. The places we buy bulls test them. There a few things that can happen from the time they test to when you turn out. The main problem is droplets on the sperm. An immature bull can have droplets and are chalked up to being immature and will shed them. If they don't shed them by 14 to 16 months, they never will. The droplets won't let the sperm enter the egg and fertilize it. Also they can loose mobility and can have sperm just plain die. We have gone through this before. It pays to test again. The bull should have a first season guarantee.

    I haven't been following along with what's been going on with the stock trailer, but if it has sentimental value, I'd recommend rebuilding it rather than replacing. That's my plan when I have a little more money. I had a professional fab and paint shop quote me about $4k to rebuild mine. Much, much cheaper than a new trailer; seems like they are pushing $15k now, which is nuts. Plus those steel trailers are so much heavier and tougher than the aluminum trailers that are built nowadays. They aren't built like they used to.

    If your open cows are open next year you might be dealing with Trich. Had a neighbor a few years ago that had a bull with Trich and he had like 250 cows out of 600 that were open. It was also concerning that your bull couldn't extend when the vet was testing it. 25 years raising cattle, never saw a bull get kicked trying to breed.

    i just bough from a local farm a 4 year old red Angus with new born twin calves, her 2nd calving, i going to keep the bull as a bull to bread my black heifers. and a 3 year black Angus that should pop in the coming month, i hope longer as it dam cold here year and a few feet of snow yet, we lost a few feet up to a week ago, as it was above freezing for 2 weeks. cant go to any auctions here unless i want to pay for a hotel for 14 days before the auction, then lock my self to the farm for 14 day when i return, was the same last year too. no auction ever in Ont. have to travel WEST 6 hours to MB. this farm had a guy out in MB BUY 25 pg cows and had them shipped in, $1500 for the black and 2k for the red to add to my guys..

    At the moment here (UK) a lot of the markets are working a drop and go policy as they are trying to limit the numbers in. I'm not even sure if they had a breeding sale last year as they trying to limit the numbers to just buyers that are serious about bidding.
    Last year there was a lot of talk that this year and last year the price would be terrible due to Brexit but lamb and cull ewe wise it has been up. Though the beef and store cattle side had been appalling but then it has been getting bad the last 5-10 years other than the occasional rise.

    Only buy bulls from producers that are reputable, and do breeding soundness exams shortly before purchase. My supplier, a retired vet, tests all bulls he sells. He says it’s not uncommon for 10% of his bulls not pass and have to be culled. Most failed bulls would breed small herds, but don’t meet minimum standards. Before finding him I purchased a bull with defective sperm, no tails to swim. Bred 1 of 22 in herd.

    Those auctioneers are rip off artists . They tell you they have a bid for $3250 and want $3500 from you and then when you say no they say that you bought it for $3000 .

    • @SlipShodBob
      @SlipShodBob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can be frustrating but it also works both ways when you're sell they will try and get the best possible price some times it can be to raise it up to the reserve other times it may be the seller. We have had issues when selling fatstock where buyers collude not to bid against one another so we have bid on our own animals the worst case you bring them home which is better than letting them go for less than you're happy with. Likewise when buying like Ryan you've got to have a firm price in mind at what you're willing to pay. It will likely be different for different animals as you may be more willing to pay more for one than another but it is something to stick by along with your thoughts of an animal.

      It varies enormously dpeending on bull and breed but the stuff u need to start it would be around 100 euros (excluding spetm straws and liquid nitrogen) but i make it worthwile by doing it on contract for bigger farmers in the area. It pays for itself with veriety also because if u have a cow that struggles to calf you can put her with a straw from a bull that is known to breed a smaller calf. And much higher rate of cows in calf, 100% pretty muvh every year. Sorry couldnt give a better cost but straws and liquid nitrogen vary wildly with the area that u live in.
