I saw Jinjer live on this past Wednesday, with 3 opening acts. My first live concert in over 3 years; the bass players were pummeling my rib cage all night, and Tatiana was even more attractive in person. They did this song, and many others. I think my favorite of the night was 'I Speak Astronomy'. Try the official music video of that song.
@@dk-go1pd I saw them in the UK during the summer, and seeing them again next march (they're supporting bullet for my valentine, and I'm going just to see Jinjer). An excellent show, and yes, eugene on bass is brilliant. I now want one of his fanned bass guitars. You're going to have a great time.
i just saw them too, and had the same pummeling from the bass! loved that! the ace of spades venue in sac has shitty acoustics tho, so the sound was muddy and the vocals got muted 😥
I love the introspection at the end. Metal often gets derided, discarded, or outright damned for being "just angry noise" or "evil". And while musicians embracing more extreme techniques like distorted vocals, technical virtuosity, or playing at break-neck (well, fingers anyway) speeds is going to turn off some listeners, it really does have a LOT to offer. I mean, I get it, metal is an acquired taste like black coffee, IPAs, or Whiskey. But once you can get your head around it, you start to recognize and appreciate the knowledge that goes into composing the pieces, as well as the skill and work that goes into musicians mastering their instruments to play them. There's SO much to explore over here on the Dark Side. We'll have you decked out in black leather throwing up the horns in no time ;-)
If you want an example of Tatiana's endurance I suggest perennial live at waken. It's the last song of a 30 min set and has arguably one of her best slide and belts. And the entire set she was getting cross feed in her monitor. She's a physical beast, hard to believe 5'3" and 90lbs..
I'm falling in love with watching you dissect and appreciate metal and see the depth of range in metal music as a genre. Keep pushing into new and uncharted musicians. It's great! You gained a subscriber today. ❤️
I see these amazing metal artists as the ones who started and trained the normal music theory way then went on their own beaten path of making something different and not mainstream. Thats the reason I love metal its not traditionally but the talent shines through and I love all you teachers understanding that and loving it.
Her voice is amazing. It's like enjoying a wonderful clear sunny day...then having the sun dropped on top of your head at the speed of light. I absolutely love the jarring suddenness of that effect.
Comparing this to what she did in Pisces you should know that J+P came out on the Macro album in 2019, Pisces was on the 2016 record King of Everything. To hear something from the current record ,Wallflowers (2021), try Vortex or Disclosure.
You should check out their performance of "Perrenial" at Wacken 2019. Absolutely incredible performance, and the band's energy and chemistry on stage is phenomenal to watch. The sound you really liked coming out of the first chorus is the drummer Vlad playing a little melody on Zilbell type bell cymbals. In addition to being an absolute monster drummer, Vlad is a classically trained pianist. There is a fantastic video on Jinjer's channel of Vlad playing a piece by Rachmaninoff.
Although I didn't connect with this the first time, I am now convinced that this is Tatiana's best for sure... a great recommendation. Right up there with Tool's live Sober show from the 90s.
Great analysis as always! The scrunched nose and exposed teeth you see in some of Tatiania's harsh vocals help create that brighter screamy sound with the static-y overtones more like a fry scream, while the more rounded mouth shapes with the teeth covered create a darker growly sound that is more associated with false chord growling. It parallels the effects that vocal tract shaping have on the timbre of clean singing. Tatiana also, as you mentioned, uses a lot of variety in her sound in both her clean and harsh vocals. That ability to create a wide variety of sounds and use them effectively to convey the story and emotion of the songs is something that many great metal vocalists share in common. If you're ever interested in exploring an even more intense example of how vocal tract shaping can enable a huge variety of different sounds in harsh vocals, you could check out the one take vocal performance of Lorna Shore's song To The Hellfire by their vocalist Will Ramos. Be warned that it's *extremely* heavy and the vocals are all harsh, but Will is able to produce such a huge variety of sounds in his harsh vocals that it doesn't get repetitive at all. Will also did a thing with The Charasmatic Voice's Elizabeth Zharoff where he had his throat scoped while doing his harsh vocals to help aid research into how those types of sounds are produced safely. There's a really cool video about it on her channel.
Wonderful analysis. Tatiana is such a brilliant vocalist, I become more impressed the more I listen to her. Recently saw Jinjer live, and she and the rest of the band are even more impressive. You mentioned how she switches from cleans to harsh vocals, in the song "Vortex" from the latest album, she does basically an answer/question section where she swaps every couple bars. You mentioned the nose scrunch. Besides David and Tatiana, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm also scrunches her nose when doing a lot of her singing. She is definitely worth checking out. The music video for "The Steeple" shows some decent face shots of it, or the live performance of "Wicked Ways" from Colorado Springs. Using a slower beat also works well in playing a brass instrument, and helps get the musical direction going forward as it should.
There is at least one point as she 'goes down the spiral staircase' where the cleans and growls clearly overlap (and it's not a reverb sustain). But I do agree : even in the live versions, she switches with incredible speed (Perennial being the classic example).
Also, her diction is so precise. She never letsts the ends of syllables slide off into mush, as so many singers do. You might wabt to watch "Who is Gonna Be the One?" or "Pit of Consciousness" (live in Kiev).
Ok, so if you like these kinds of one take performances you should definitely check out Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox! She's got a few one take performances out and both "Rule of Nines" and "Circle With Me" gives a great representation of her vocal range. Spiritbox with her and Jinjer with Tatiana on the same tour would be so friggin' awesome!
Enjoyed your reaction and analysis I love this video/song so much Tatiana is amazing. I like this version better than the music video. She looks very beautiful and the cat at the beginning is an adorable moment.
You need to do Spiritbox next!!!!!! Blessed be is a great one as it showcases Courtney's clean vocals in such an amazing way that when she starts to scream it's such a drastic contrast it'll blow your mind...
That spiritbox chick ain't got shit. I seen them both in concert and Tatiana is on another level. That chick isn't even close. She has to struggle. You can see it in her throat in her videos. Tatiana destroys her!!! The chick from In this Moment is annoying as well. Bunch of crying annoying want to be glam metal. Jinjer is real metal. Eugene is a Bass God. Roman is sharp. Vlad is a destroyer. Tatiana is a slayer.
Her clean vocals remind me of a young Gwen Stefani, but then Tati brings so much more. Also the official video for this is worth a watch, adds in interesting context to the song.
Really enjoyed your analysis of the different tambre of Tati’s growls and screams. She masterfully manipulates each “tool” she has in her toolbox to convey different subtleties of the story she is telling. A suggestion if you just want to hear Tati’s beautiful cleans is “Bad Water”. However, any track you choose from Jinjer will be very, very good…
I just love that everybody at first is like "no that's not her blabla" and then hearing this song for the first time "narrow minds cannot believe what they hear" is pure gold to me.
Yes, thank you! I've been sorta patiently waiting for another Jinjer reaction. Great analysis as usual. I've been listening to them for over two years now and I am still always amazed. I can't wait to see them live in Atlanta next month. I hope you keep doing more. I think you'd enjoy a live performance, try "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019. You'll really enjoy it!
Always a joy watching your joy reacting to a new bit of music. There's so much talent in metal it's indeed a shame it's not more mainstream but at the same time could it be itself if it was? Jinjer is a great rabbit hole but I gladly see you explore more artists like Cammie Gilbert-Beverly, Noora Louhimo, Karsten Brill or Will Ramos.
There are some other metal singers which have done some one takes with similar camera angles, specifically Courtney from Spiritbox (Rule of Nines or Circle with Me) and Will Ramos from Lorna Shore (To the Hellfire or for something clean his cover of Sleep Token's Hypnosis) and there is that video that Charismatic Voice did where they stuck a camera down Will's throat.
For even more Jinjer-y goodness, I'd recommend the official videos for Wallflower, Vortex and Home Back; and their live performance of Perennial at Wacken in 2019. This last one has excellent sound quality for a live recording.
Great reaction Bethany! I'm still not a big fan of harsh vocals but I am amazed by Tatiana. Her ability to switch vocals back and forth is fantastic. You also have to give the band a big thumbs up.
I hope that you share your newfound appreciation for the metal arts with some of your classically trained peers. It would be great to see the style find its way into classes like the one you mentioned in the end there.
Great reaction Bethany, like me Tatiana never ceases to amaze me; her vocals are just amazing. I think you should look at a live performance, Perennial at Wacken is a really good one to see her in the real world!
It is good that you make that comment at the end, I saw other vocal coaches trying to learn more about the growl/scream and realize that is not that simple, that took a lot of trainning and effort. It should be taking more seriusly.
-In my dive into this band, this is the one song I can’t fully get invested into even after multiple listens. At the same time, I think it’s a top level song. I love how they’re not trying to be just a metal band. The different styles don’t sound like it’s one band of a particular genre playing their style and trying to play two other styles. You have a reggae sound, a full on metal sound, and then a more rock sound. All three are VERY well done and shows how great they are as musicians. The fact that Tatiana can go between the three so easily is a testament to her ability. With that said, I think my issue is over how quick the switches in the beginning are. -I understood what you were talking about with the slight reggae feel in the last false scream section. When you talked about that, it made me think of when DOD created the “Grunge pedal” with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden being huge. The funny part is among the sounds you could set it to was Cannibal Corpse, which is a popular death metal band that may be recognized from “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” So, when you said what you said, I imagined someone playing something by Jimmy Cliff with one hooked up. -For something completely different, I’m sure there are a number of suggestions for “Perennial”, “Teacher, Teacher”, and “Vortex” but a song that I think is required is “Bad Water.” I fell in love with that song with the official live video that Napalm Records released. -In December, they will be the first band I’ve seen in, as I like to describe it,”God, I’m old” years when they play in Charlotte. For most of my life, I’ve gone through serious depression around this time of year and never looked forward to it. This is the first year I’ve been excited for December to get here and, as weird as it sounds, this show is the reason.
Women in metal since I started listening in the 80's have all been amazing, BUT the ladies I am hearing in today's version of metal, are OUTSTANDING. The journey into this rabbit hole is something that I have truly enjoyed. Another female lead is Arch Enemy, and I think Handshake with Hell would lead you down the Alissa White-Gluz avenue
Have you ever listened to Opeth? They are a Swedish prog metal band formed in the late 80’s who are still performing and putting out music. Their lead singer and founder, Mikael Akerfeldt basically invented the modern growling techniques that all current metal vocalists use that allow you to switch between clean and harsh vocals so easily and also growl without damaging your chords. They are a direct influence on Jinjer (and hundreds of other bands). Their live version of “Ghost of Perdition” at Red Rocks is a reaction channel staple and a good intro to them, you should check it out! Love your channel and reactions!
What a great video! Baller song and your reaction, as always, is so enjoyable to observe. To hear your thoughts on Devin Townsend would be a fun thing. Songs like Kingdom, Why?, etc. Those two songs are just great, as is he in general. :) Great channel!
Another entertaining and inspired performance by Jinjer ... the spectrum of talent displayed here is expansive -- good choice for your analysis and reaction. Very astute observations, thx. For follow-up, and variety, would like The Voca😄lyst's to push the envelope with the legendary "The Black Opera: Symphoniae Mysteriorum in Laudem Tenebrarum" by Opera IX, specifically Act V: The Magic Temple. The Black Opera is the Opus Magnum of Opera IX with lead vocalist Cadaveria. Cadaveria has since gone solo, and a good representative music video is "Flowers in Fire" official video by Cadaveria. The Black Opera has no video, just audio -- but, riveting high energy heavy metal just the same. If Cadaveria is beautiful, but a little too intense, then let me suggest something more regional: Jan 22, 2020 “The In-Between” by the metal group In This Moment from the album 'Mother (Jan 22, 2020). Very high energy metal -- would love to get reactions.
My first time here in this channel, so first of all, great reaction and I'm moving forward to your first impression on Jinjer (I bet it was Pisces lol). Also, I want to complement your teeths, dude, your teeths are SO FREAKING PRETTY! That's it. Keep doing reacts, you are awesome.
I just saw them in Boston two days ago and they are amazing live. Tatiana is an amazing vocalist and front person. I wanted to watch Eugene and Vlad but Tati just kept pulling my eyes away from them because she is just that commanding in her presence on stage. Definitely a band I will see every time they are around. Perennial (Live at Wacken) is a great video to see how well she commands a crowd. I swear every person in the place was singing along with Pisces.
This was a lockdown video that she did at her boyfriend/husband's house. She was isolated in Las Angeles, as was the bassist Eugene. Jinjer was just about to start a tour of the US so had their visas when everything was shut down. The rest of the band was in Ukraine so they were putting out what ever content they could.
Your scrunched nose theory is still valid. It's easier to make a harsh, raspy/nasal fry with that placement. But when you need a true growl, that won't get you there. Tatiana can both scream(what most people call fry), and growl. There's lots of fry on both, but they're very different physically. My fry is pretty high and harsh, while my growl is much lower. My true, clean voice is bass-baritone if that gives you more information.
Speaking of Metal in Music Ed... There's a metal band called "Ne Obliviscaris" who has a song that is (or at least was at one point) studied in the Sydney Conservatorium. The song "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" will be studied "as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques" There is an excellent live video of NeO performing this song in Denver... 2 excellent singers (one clean, one growl) sometimes singing at the same time. Perhaps you could check it out!
Please comment on Arch Enemy as well. She has some songs where she make transition from clean to brutal. (i.e. Handshake with Hell). Opeth has several good examples as well. Thumbs up from Sertab Erener's country; Turkey👍👍👍
It’s been way too long since you did some Jinjer! With dual tours kicking off now…one with Disturbed and one headlining on off nights, I think a revisit is due please! I think you’d really dig Wallflower, Vortex and Teacher Teacher
Great reaction. I think it is now time for you to have the real Jinjer experience: a live show. There are many good live performances of Jinjer but may I make few suggestions: 1. Vortex Hellfest 2021: the very first time live version of this song and Tatiana is perfect., as usual :) I think you will really enjoy the back and forth between growls and clean voice 2. Home back: Hellfest 2022. Despite sound issues, this is a must see, because one of the first show after the band was authorized to travel outside Ukraine as cultural ambassador. If you mix this with the topic of the song (2014 war in eastern Ukraine which force the band members to leave their home country of Donestk) you have a very emotional performance. 3. I speak astronomy. For these one you can either choose live show of official video. This one shows the power of Tatiana's clean voice. 4. And finally whatever live song you pick is great but take care to the quality of the live video, The whole band deserve it.
Because your not using your vocal cords to form sounds, you have to change the placement of your tongue. So, the scrunching of the nose is rearranging how your mouth is shaped. You will notice on Tatiana you can understand her words, that takes a lot of skill. There is a good video done by Elizabeth of Charismatic voice with Will Ramos from Lorna Shore. They show that his vocal cords twist to the left into an S shape when he does his screams. The video is very cool.
I have never clicked on a video so fast! I've been waiting for more Jinjer from you! For a great example of her switching from growl to clean, check out the official music video for "Teacher, Teacher!" (she does it mid-sentence.) For an amazing live experience, check out "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019 or "Who is Gonna Be The One." I linked the videos below for you. Great analysis! "Teacher, Teacher!" th-cam.com/video/oRkRwL0vjOg/w-d-xo.html "Perennial" th-cam.com/video/bxi3i9wzQBk/w-d-xo.html "Who Is Gonna Be The One" th-cam.com/video/U6rv5qi8-8s/w-d-xo.html
I'd love to hear your thoughts on Floor Jansen's screaming in Yours is an Empty Hope. I'd recommend the live a Wembley version since the audio comes through more clearly.
Well done and appreciate your attention to the musicians they are amazing you should do a stage performance preferably Pit of Consciousness live Kiev in 2019 before the Russian invasion
Hello from Greece! About your comment on that beautiful instrumental sound... It was Vlad the drummer with his bells. I've never seen in my life such a minimal metal drum set sounds like two big sets with two drummers. He is the reason am thinking about throughing my drum set from my balcony. It's even more disturbing when you hear Vlad play Rachmaninoff on the piano and other crazy stuff on guitar. Since you mentioned about your education, I think that 'Teacher teacher'' (official video') is suitable for the next Jinjer video. I'd love to see you count measures on this one 😇
You mentioned in a previous video that you’d like to learn how metal singers use the false cords. Watch the instructional video called The Zen Of Screaming by Melissa Cross. She literally teaches/coaches the best in the industry.
Great reaction! I HIGHLY recommend reacting to Devin Townsend. He's a Canadian metal musician and an amazing singer. I am sure you'd be impressed! Kindom (EMGTV live) is a great place to start, shows off his vocals, songwriting and personality. Back me up here guys!
"Also her cat..." nearly subscribed, just for that. Theory of the Scrunched Nose - actually, I think she's using it for certain timbres of scream. It will take me a lot ot time to characterize them (for myself... I believe others such as Melissa have done this a decade or more ago, but I'm stubborn so I gotta let me do it for me.... stupid me.) I am FAR from a false-cord aficionado, BUT, I am starting to hear all the little variations in sound production. And as you mentioned, this video gives an unparalleled chance to watch the digastric, mylohyoid, and geniohyoid groups, and their interplay with the infrahyoid to depress the larynx. Ya know, that thar Nose Scrunch MIGHT be an example of cross-division sympathetic contraction if she's manipulating the stylohyoid muscle or posterior belly of the digastric, since they get some innervation from the Facial nn (CN VII) ... makes a person go 'hm...' Do you think she'd mind if I put some micro-sized tension and volt-sensors all over her face and neck? A) it'd be a very Metal look. B) there might be some cool info to gather, if we can damp-out the common mode noise. Ah... sub'd. Thanks for the chance to wax nerdy.
As someone who found metal some 17 years ago in freshman year of high school, it's nice to see people with open minds enjoying medal as much as I do. There's too much good music out there to stick to one genre.
Great Review TY. Find Jinjer - Scissors Lyrics by Rodo Guitar to hear a very young Tatianna , shes more Raw , unrefined but yet you can hear , see what shes gonna be .... \m/
Nice one Bethany! Not suggesting you react to the same song twice, but just for your own entertainment, check out the official video for Judgement & Punishment, and watch Tati having WAY too much fun as a witch...🤣😎 Couple of other Jinjer trakc that'd be good to react to: Teacher, Teacher (official video): scream-to-clean changes every few word in places & an awesome tune Who is Gonna Be The One (Live) (5 years ago): close-ups of all the band as well as Tati. More reggae too (but wait for it...😉)
Did you notice she can sing two inches from the mic without a pop filter? Her breath control is astounding.
Vortex, Wallflower, Perennial, Teacher Teacher, Mediator…you will not be disappointed!

Great song, great reaction! Please do more Jinjer. I recommend Teacher, Teacher which is my favourite Jinjer song.
Banger
"Could it be itself it it was?" ...really makes you think!
I liked so much when you point out that you where still getting the reggae feel when they played it with there metal sound!
For even more Jinjer-y goodness, I'd recommend the official videos for Wallflower, Vortex and Home Back; and their live performance of Perennial at Wacken in 2019. This last one has excellent sound quality for a live recording.
She so wildly talented, that people often forget that the band itself are equally good at their craft.
I love when it hit the switch up the host just was like wtf you know what fuck it
This song is so good. Love Tati and Jinjer.
Looking forward to your reaction on "Home Back" (my favorite Jinjer song)
Great reaction Bethany, like me Tatiana never ceases to amaze me; her vocals are just amazing.
I think you should look at a live performance, Perennial at Wacken is a really good one to see her in the real world!
You need to see her live. Watch "Perennial" live version. Will blow your mind.
You HAVE to hear Pit of Consciousness Live in Kiev, is a MUST 🔥🔥🔥 kisses from Brazil 💛
Another female lead is Arch Enemy, and I think Handshake with Hell would lead you down the Alissa White-Gluz avenue
yay!!! cant wait!!
I;ll just say now that the next one should be "Perennial live at Wacken". Such a masterpiece
Great channel!
Thanks Brandon! I actually just listened to Devin this week... 🤯 Video should be up in the next few weeks!
I love your wonderfully fresh reactions to the musicality of these genre that aren't necessarily in your wheelhouse. Great stuff!
Please take Jinjer in a weekly basis. Try I Speak Astronomy, Perennial (my favorite lyrics), Teacher Teacher. Just to mention a few
I swear every person in the place was singing along with Pisces.
with Jinjer you don't get that far with four quarter beat.... 😃
many thanx for your analysis and lovely greetings from a german musician
Vortex from their most recent album is a good one. 👍
Perhaps you could check it out!
the singer from the rock band spiritbox has a couple just like this of her from the side profile. she’s just as talented
Your next Jinjer reactions: Teacher Teacher, Perennial live at Wacken, Home back!!! ❤️
JINJER - Vortex, more vocal techniques are represented there
Please comment on Arch Enemy as well. She has some songs where she make transition from clean to brutal. (i.e. Handshake with Hell). Opeth has several good examples as well. Thumbs up from Sertab Erener's country; Turkey👍👍👍
It’s called “whining in pitch”. A lot of vocal teachers use that term.
There are many good live performances of Jinjer but may I make few suggestions:
1. Vortex Hellfest 2021: the very first time live version of this song and Tatiana is perfect., as usual :) I think you will really enjoy the back and forth between growls and clean voice
11:18 drums shift from regular time to half time.

She's a fuckin' legend.
You reeeeeally need to listen to handshake with hell by arch enemy
Got my tickets for July can't wait to see them again
Great job!!!
If you want to see how low her growls can go you should react to Who Is Gonna Be The One (Live)
No need for backup! I just recorded a reaction to Devin so it should be up in the next few weeks. Spoiler alert... 🤯
@@TheVocalyst Amazing! I can't wait, hope I was correct about you being impressed :)
Yay my favorite vid and song.
You should listen to live version of Pirrenial. from Wacken festival in 2019.
Boo -- Ya !!! I hope you are well. This is one of my favorite newer bands..... t'hey are so different. Take care.........
You’re in for a treat when you react to Vortex.
"Also her cat..." nearly subscribed, just for that.
Theory of the Scrunched Nose - actually, I think she's using it for certain timbres of scream. It will take me a lot ot time to characterize them (for myself... I believe others such as Melissa have done this a decade or more ago, but I'm stubborn so I gotta let me do it for me.... stupid me.)
I am FAR from a false-cord aficionado, BUT, I am starting to hear all the little variations in sound production. And as you mentioned, this video gives an unparalleled chance to watch the digastric, mylohyoid, and geniohyoid groups, and their interplay with the infrahyoid to depress the larynx.
Ya know, that thar Nose Scrunch MIGHT be an example of cross-division sympathetic contraction if she's manipulating the stylohyoid muscle or posterior belly of the digastric, since they get some innervation from the Facial nn (CN VII)
... makes a person go 'hm...'
Do you think she'd mind if I put some micro-sized tension and volt-sensors all over her face and neck?
A) it'd be a very Metal look.
B) there might be some cool info to gather, if we can damp-out the common mode noise.
Ah... sub'd.
Thanks for the chance to wax nerdy.
"I'm stubborn so I gotta let me do it for me." 😂 I love this! You can wax nerdy anytime!
i am a reggae fan but with jinjer i travel in other dimension thanks
As someone who found metal some 17 years ago in freshman year of high school, it's nice to see people with open minds enjoying medal as much as I do. There's too much good music out there to stick to one genre.
Great Review TY.
Find Jinjer - Scissors Lyrics by Rodo Guitar to hear a very young Tatianna , shes more Raw , unrefined but yet you can hear , see what shes gonna be ....
\m/
Nice one Bethany! Not suggesting you react to the same song twice, but just for your own entertainment, check out the official video for Judgement & Punishment, and watch Tati having WAY too much fun as a witch...🤣😎 Couple of other Jinjer trakc that'd be good to react to:
Teacher, Teacher (official video): scream-to-clean changes every few word in places & an awesome tune
Who is Gonna Be The One (Live) (5 years ago): close-ups of all the band as well as Tati. More reggae too (but wait for it...😉)
