    Just got new information: I was right, the Dreadnought is in fact a dedicated siege platform, and most likely not Snoke's flagship.

    The pitched angular design of the original Stardestroyers was intended to give turbo-laser batteries a clear field of fire with out interfering with one another. Point the nose of a Stardestroyer at an enemy capitol starship and guns from the top and bottom can be brought to bear on the same target.
    Flat level surfaces such as on this "dreadnaught" will not give you the same field of fire. Might even be so ineffective as to have a single Starfighter swoop in and clear off all the dreadnaughts defenses.
    :P

      @@Technogeist1987 jup, tbh most starwars ship designs dont make much sense, thats why they invetend the tarkin doctrine. Its just a way to get away with the stupid designs.
      To clearify: not being amazing or perfect isnt a problem, but designs that dont make sense is a problem.

      @DeathmasterSniktch 7 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      They had enough resources to empty out a planet and build a sun-sucking super death ray in it, while keeping all of that work secret from the Republic and the Resistance. So, yes, I think that have enough petty cash to create task specific ships. ((I hope you can feel the sarcasm.))

      WilhelmScreamer the major flaw with a destroyer (or weapons platform, in this case) being flat is that it exposes the reactor more. The Acclamator cruisers and the Venator-class, Imperial I and II-class, and Resurgent-class Destroyers all slope up to the bridge. Because the reactor is underneath that slope, it is well-protected.
      Even though the Mandator-IV is a bad design, I still find it interesting, personally.

    • @randomcenturion7264
      @randomcenturion7264 7 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      O R- That's something that annoys me. This new trilogy seems to think the good guys have to always be the underdogs. During the Clone Wars, the Republic had one of the best armies in the galaxy backed up by a big damn fleet and some of the coolest vehicles I've ever seen. And yet they're still acting like they're' the rebellion with the whole "rag tag band of heroes thing". It's been thirty years, I'd have hoped they invested some money in building a new military.

    • @kereminde
      @kereminde 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "During the Clone Wars, the Republic had one of the best armies in the galaxy backed up by a big damn fleet and some of the coolest vehicles I've ever seen." You mean the Republic under the Chancellor, what's his name . . . Palpatine. Who saw the program be worked on at first. And then look to the Galactic Empire under the Emperor, what the hell was his name . . . Palpatine, wasn't it?
      I don't know why, but I feel there may be a link as to why during the Clone Wars the Republic had a huge army with lots of equipment to the Empire immediately following which . . . had all the same equipment and just iterated on the designs some more towards the design paradigm of having disposable human(oid) resources.
      The reason the New Republic in the current canon doesn't have it is probably because they didn't want to appear like they were pulling an "in with the new boss, same as the old boss" thing.

    • @randomcenturion7264
      @randomcenturion7264 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      kerminde- Even if they were worried about that, at least invest in some decent firepower to protect your people. People like Leia and Poe knew the First Order was out there and that they weren't gonna just sit there. But very few listened.

    I wouldn't mind seeing more of these rapid fire commentary videos, but am I the only one who doesn't like the look of either of the new vehicles?
    So far, I'm really disappointed with the First Order's 'just make it a shitton bigger' approach. To me, the walker's rather primal look doesn't seem to really fit with the whole imperial aesthetic, and that dreadnought with its massive bridge section just looks plain ugly. It's a raised bar mounted on a triangle.

    • @caelvanir8557

      Also, I know Star Wars is a setting where you ignore how much everything costs to produce, but wouldn't giving them sleek, top of the line but smaller and rarer military equipment alongside holdovers from decades ago give them a more imperial remnant feel?

      Sultan yes i agree. The gorilla at-at is just wrong.
      I dont see empire remnant. I see a try to do a fanfic of star wars. Just really wtf. At-at was already great.
      They could have just put more guns and make it bigger. Now it looks retarded and a hero boss fight from mega man
      For the dreadnought. It just look awful. The others were good. Not that one except if it was an interdictor classe maybe. Plainly sucks for design.
      This doesnt feel like star wars. It feels like an amateur try hard.
      Even kotor or legends had better design

    • @philippobitz2592
      @philippobitz2592 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The new dreadnought really doesn't look all that great with that oversized bridge section and I can't help but imagine, that this thing will launch itself to a neighboring star system with those autocannons, because the ship doesn't look like it would have enough space for thrusters big enough to counter the recoil from them.
      What I do understand and kind of like though, is the decision to make the top almost completely flat. When designing the Vehicles for the First Order, Kevin Jenkins (the design supervisor for TLJ) envisioned them to be impervious to the weapons and tactics the rebels from the original trilogy employed, that's why the new AT walks like a gorilla; they're supposed to be immune to tow cables. That is also why I don't dislike the dreadnought as much: They seem to have almost no turbolasers or ion cannons for ship-to-ship combat, and instead rely on about 50 point-defense lasers, because they know the rebels (and thus by extension, the resistance) rely heavily on starfighters and -bombers and the empire lost, because they underestimated them. Now if you were to put those PD guns on a tiered design like the ISD II, about half of the guns couldn't fire at incoming X-Wings if they were to come from anywhere but the front, because the bridge would be in the way. Now imagine, if the surface was flat: It would look hideous, sure, but all turrets could effectively cover each other all at once. (just ignore, that a bridge that's sperate from the superstructure is still a very dumb move)
      Edit: didn't mean to write that much...

    Where on Yavin does the First Order get the funding and support to be able to build ships like this and even the StarKiller base?! It seems almost ridiculous that a fringe group that would be something like an 'Imperial rebellion group' would be able to create such facilities. I'd like to see instead that the Imperial remnants would be like the ragtag fleet the rebellion had - old TIE fighters, interceptors and bombers, some somewhat-poorly maintained Imperial class and one or two Victory class Star Destroyers, a handful of Imperial corvettes or gunships. More caution in conserving men and material, so hit and run tactics and some hidden bases... A reversal of situations for the Empire (or what's left of it)...

      Yep, but every time I look at it it's gonna irritate me that the brightness is low and there are now slow zooms lol. Rattling off low-effort videos isn't really what I want to do, but hitting stuff while it's in the news will help the channel.

    You do a awsome job at that, btw. It is why I am both subbed and patreoned with you.
    But a video here and there, that isnt a expertly edited and informative breakdown of *insert vehicle here* sounds fun.

    Hey, spacedock! I wanted to say that this is a good format for a video. I would imagine that it is easier to make than your main series but this kind of format can be as interesting. Also it helps to fill in the spaces between your main videos. I hope that the feedback helps and have a good one!

    That's an AT-M6 (all-terrain-mega-caliber-6). Its mega caliber 6 turbolaser cannon brings the power of an
    ISD-2 to the ground. Its meant to break threw high strength shields, and its 4 legs are built to stabilize the walker when firing the cannon.

  • @jlokison

    The Dreadnought definitely seems to be a bombardment specialist. The fact that they call the big guns autocannons instead of super-turbo-lasers implies that those things are mass drivers.

      Sean Wadey It also make sense, since we know that Star Wars shields do not react really well against kinetic weapons.
      I think that a planetary shield would not resist long against them.
      It would be funny if in the film they call them AMAC (Auto Magnetic Accelerated Cannons).

    A planetary bombardment, that's actually something we never got to see in the original or prequel trilogies. Though that last statement about how different ships have different functions. Though interesting realistically it would make sense to have many the same vessels preform as many duty's as possible. That way you would only need one, it brings down the coast.

    I'll bet those orbital auto cannons are where they got the idea for those planet killing cannons we saw in The Rise of Skywalker where the Resistance encountered a huge fleet of Sith Star Destroyers with those oversized cannons on they're undersides which also lead to they're downfall as if you plan to build a fleet of planet killing starships don't link the cannon to the ships main reactor because if you do just paint a giant bullseye there with the words 'Aim here to blow me out of the Sky'.

  • @joelrollins8986

    I don't think the structure in the middle is a dish, it is a docking collar. Everyone is joking that it looks like a pizza slice, but I think it looks like a Star Destroyer with the top decks removed. You mentioned that is seems to lack hangers or medium weapons. Perhaps they are using a modular design with specialized hanger decks or gun decks swapped in and out as needed. If this thing is supposed to be a siege platform, maybe there is an enormous landing ship to carry those guerrilla walkers down to the surface.

  • @morxas1513

    Mandator class was indeed an enormous ships, but first versions were design for the inter-system operations and didn't even have a Hyperdrive - later the Mandators were refitted for interstellar operations but they were too resource consuming vessels and, as many "rebuild" units, weren't as efficient as ships built from scratch.

    In the StarWars.com Q & A, the Dreadnaught designer mentions that a flat top was a specific design requirement from Rian. I wonder why? My first thought was an aircraft carrier, but I can't make out any runway lines or docking. Maybe the turrets & bridge recess & the whole thing sits flush to another surface, like a second gunship, or larger craft? Form follows function, after all (for anyone that doesn't like the aesthetics, we can't really judge until we see what it does). Thanks for the video!

    Way late to the posting, but I did want to say that for an unscripted video you did fairly well on your vocal mannerisms/tics. There was some 'uh's and the like, but you kept it succinct, to the point and relevant. And you did not have anywhere near as many filler words (uh, you know, etc..) as many other content creators who use this format. So may not be relevant, but did want to point that out and give credit where it's due. :)
