    I know if I were an Imperial commander, I'd want as many of these ships in my fleet as possible. The rebellion's greatest strength was their nimble, hyperspace-capable fighters and hit-and-run tactics. Remove their ability to flee, and the likelihood of victory tips very heavily in the favor of the Empire.

    • @ignatiusrense4766
      @ignatiusrense4766 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Immobilizer 418s were very rare in the Imperial fleet because they were hideously expensive and difficult to manufacture. I don't remember for sure, but even by Endor there only existed a couple dozen, at best.

    • @davfree9732
      @davfree9732 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      The only problem they had was power. If the shields took to much damage, the commander could pull the power from the gravity well's to shore them up, but at the cost of removing the gravity well effect. This makes an Interdictor a primary target and in need of support that can protect it.
      SWLegends Rogue Squadron books often used a Proton Torpedo barrage of 24 Torpedo's, striking at once, to seriously wreck the shields of Interdictors. The only real defense was a fighter screen that could tie up the fighters and prevent their co-ordinated assault, or moving it behind a ship that was made purely to fight

    • @SupersaiyanChristian
      @SupersaiyanChristian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Mostly, yes. The other problem was the Empire's fighters we're inferior to rebellion fighters combat-wise. Weak frames and no shields added to the woes off the early Tie line of strike craft.
      To compound this issue, larger imperial capital ships rarely has point defense lasers essentially making them huge targets to the rebellions superior fighters.

      @@lancer737 maybe it's just me, by I've never heard of a SD having much of a PD system. Missiles sure, but not much in the way of a laser PD array. It was brutal in capital ship engagements as they had the 8 octuple turbolaser batteries, but to my knowledge they we're weak against fighters.
      Again, I always thought standard Tie Fighters bit against X-Wings. True they we're more maneuverable and fast, but with low durability and no shields, they we're not great. That was why the Interceptor was brought into play. It was at least comparable to the Xwing in a dogfight. I'm not saying the tie is awful, but she struggled against rebellion fighters. Her saving grace was she was cheap to produce so the empire could field a lot more of them, giving imperial ships a numbers advantage. Quantity vs Quality
      I could be mixing my Legends vs Canon knowledge as well

      I remember he used them to bring his own ships out of hyperspace during his attack on Coruscant, his destroyers jumping from just out of system to be pulled out by the interdictors fields directly on top of the capitals defensive stations, it would apear that his captians were masters of hyperspace jumping, when again it was Thrawn that really knew his stuff. But others used them well in combat too, such as during an attempt to destroy the iron fist, where a damaged Star destroyer was locked on a ramming course with one and the admiral at the helm reversed the field and bounced away from the collision.
      Of course they were always portrayed as the most dangerous thing on the battlefield for controlling a space battle, but time and again proved vunerable to any concentrated attack on them from captial ships down to snubfigthers such as Antilles and his x-wing fighter groups performing mass torpedo fire.

      @@Marcus51090 In old lore (that also was not respected) there was a rule that you CAN'T enter hyperspace in gravity well. Hyperspace lanes had been just a "roads" that had nothing that create a gravity well on the way. Sometimes some anomaly, wondering asteroid or planet would enter it and force ship from hyperspace, they often disintegrate from that. The second rule was that there was NO communication in hyperspace. You enter it, you are blind and no incoming or outgoing data would be send or delivered. So two basic rules, no hyperspace in gravity well, no communications. It was not respected even then in 100% cases. Now they just... meh, I don't like those changes. Before that also flying in hyperspace was much longer because you need to enter and exit it to avoid known gravity wells. Now, you are in one side of galaxy... Ah, the Interdictor cruiser. Easily one of my favorite additions to canon. However, when the title said Interdictor Star Destroyer, I though you were going to talk about the actual star destroyer variant, sometimes called the Dominator-class. It was built on the hull of the Imperial-I star destroyer and was effectively a true frontline unit with the capability to interdict.

    I feel like it’s inclusion at Endor raises a big question of why Vader didn’t bring any with him to Hoth. I get that Lucas hadn’t thought of it yet but if your to add a new wonder weapon to the lore you have to explain why it wasn’t used at other times.
    I do really like the idea though and Thrawn’s use of them in the books to make more precise tactical lightspeed jumps is brilliant

    • @PaladinGuy
      @PaladinGuy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well, you listed the real world answer, but as for in universe it could be that the Empire just didn't have many with the couple Vaders fleet might have had, if any, could have been knocked out by the planetary Ion Cannon. It's also possible that they didn't have enough to cut off all escape routes, Interdictors still have finite ranges after all.

    • @andyrihn1
      @andyrihn1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PaladinGuy One acceptable answer could be that the rebels managed to take out some factory that was necessary for building them (maybe some rare but essential component was made there) explaining why Vader would have had limited if any access to them. And since Endor was seen as a critical final stroke, Palpatine made sure to bring any that were left to prevent anyone from escaping

    • @kereminde
      @kereminde 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@andyrihn1 I think the reason was hinted at in some of the books (now non-canon but meh), implying these units were valuable either the Interdictors were *expensive* or *difficult* to produce (due to the generators). Either way, they were deemed too valuable to risk due to there not being a great deal of them in comparison to the size of the Imperial Navy's fleet. Usually they were given to task forces specifically out to hunt Rebels or to be used for entrapment exercises.
      Sort of an extension, because hyperdrives on starfighters apparently made them much more expensive (partially due to also needing either an astromech interface or a dedicated nav computer), as did shields, which is why the TIE series eschewed both of them by and large. (And the ones which did have both were only given limited production runs.)
      At some point, the idea of logistics with how these things were handled was being considered. Of course, then you also have the EU where apparently nothing major happened without a Jedi involved somewhere.

      It's not that it's impossible to jump whilst in a gravity well. It's that it's a monumentally stupid and dangerous thing to do, and greater than nine times out of ten will get you killed. Interdictors work via a mix of exploiting safeties put in place to prevent said stupidity, and the more concentrated nature of the fields (and difficulty of knowing theyr'e there in the first place/factoring them into your calculations) making hyperjumps much, much, MUCH more difficult.
      In Atmospheric jumps were possible now and then in Legends.

      Platius Cyndar I think idea is that even with the safety guards disabled the gravity well of a planet, or in this case, an interdictor, are a real threat to a ship. They can rip ships apart mid hyper jump or destroy when they exit. Obviously the safeguards against gravity wells exist for a reason. Even without them the interdictor could probably yank a ship out of hyperspace. If anything it sounds like these hyperdrive safeguards actually prevent the interdictors from doing even more damage to a ship.

    I’ve been confused by this for a while now; I’ve noticed that both the one with the thin bridge and the blocky one like an ISD's bridge are called Interdictors, the ones with thin bridges are sometimes credited as being made by Kuat drive yards and sometimes by Siena’s, and the one with the blocky bridge is the same. In canon is the thin-bridge design made by sienar whereas in Legends it’s made by Kuat, and which does the one with the ISD's bridge from and who made it?

    The one thing i don't like about this ship is that it follows the tarkin doctrine far too much. Given the choice id expand its hangars to allow it to carry a couple of bomber squadrons then load the ship itself with as many point defence laser cannons and tractor beams as i could then use ion cannons for anti capital weapons. That way if a ship gets caught, if it's a starfighter you can use tractor beams to slow it down and laser cannons to rip it to shreds. If it's a capital ship use the ion cannons to disable it then either board and capture or use the bombers to rip it apart.

      Granted they threw in the a random new length for the ship, everything else was ripped str8t from Legends. That said, the main reason Immobilzer 418s didn't have heavier armament was because of those gravity well generators. When they are powered up it didn't leave alot of energy for much else besides a very basic defense, shields, life support and such.

    I was so happy when I saw Star Wars Rebels and they brought this ship in. Video games, expanded universe all utilized this ship to its fullest and to see them actually used even in the animated universe made it even better. I hope they find more ways to utilize this vessel and use an animated or live action of Thrawn using these vessels to their fullest potential. Someday even though assumed that they were at Endor, that they could redo some of the special effects of Endor and actually show these cruisers being used to block escaping Rebel ships. It would add more drama into the movie as the Rebels truly know they are trapped and cant escape the Death Star.

    I wonder if it would be possible to take the overall structure housing and components of an interdictor class, and incorporated within a super star destroyer or some other type of larger ship with better defense.
    Also, it would be pretty interesting to see the legends Thrawn taking the gravity well generators, combining them with the stealth technology he uses later in the legend stories, and secretly dispersing them around planets and battlefield at strategic locations. Considering what he did with just the stealth technology and asteroids, that would be an amazing combination. Space tactical peanut butter and chocolate.

    I have to add one correction, it is not a fact that a ship can not enter hyperspace when in a gravity field but rather it is a safety mechanism on most ships in star wars so ships in hyperspace don’t accidentally crash into celestial bodies. Examples of ships being in hyperspace while also being in a gravity field can be seen in Rogue one and episode seven.

      Rogue One was an emergency, as Jedha had been hit by a shot from the Death Star and the U-Wing would have been caught in the debris field had Cassian not made the jump.
      As for The Force Awakens, Han Solo jumped INTO Starkiller Base's atmosphere to get past its planetary shielding. He didn't jump out of a gravity well.

    It would have made sense to include a small interdictor generator as standard on a ISD. Considering they had frigate sized interdictors, a single generator from one of those wouldn't poke out of the hull and be a target.
    It would greatly help the ISD's main purpose, which was to police systems and enforce Imperial order. Ships couldn't jump away before imperial inspection, yes you could tractor a ship, but having to do that to each freighter leaving a planet before you check your records is a bit of a headache, especially since you have limited tractor beamers installed. It would make blockading a system simple.
    And it would severely hamstring the rebel hit and run tactics, they could only engage in stand up fights, no retreat, no escape, no guerrilla strikes.
    Having each ship be able to create a small interdictor field means formations don't have to be as complicated and delicate. And if one ISD needs to divert power from interdiction to shields, then another can take up the slack, or even switch off interdiction in a rare straight slugging match.
    If the cost of even a small interdiction generator was too prohibitive for widespread adoption, at least include a ISD variant that had it, but looked identical externally. That way no rebel ship knows if it can escape when attacking a random ISD, and in a pitched battle against a fleet of ISD's they won't know which ship is preventing their escape, so it can't be singled out.
    I'll include this in my memo to Palps, along with the point defense suggestions, the Tie Defender upgrade, the support fleet for the Death Star, the flak frigate and gunship programs, the stormtrooper armour suggestions and marksmanship and tactics programs, the Walker redesign committees concept - they also have some interesting ideas on ISD bridge design and shielding, and finally HR want to have a word with you about Lord Vader … it says here "gasp" in their memo ???

    So glad that they brought the Drag Ship (pilot slang for Interdictor) into canon. Shame they never covered Thrawn's other use for the vessel in legends, how he would use it to pull reinforcements out of hyperspace exactly where he needed them, without the ship's crews having to worry about hitting their hyperspace mark. A brilliant tactic, in legends, and well used by Thrawn's Empire.

    This ship is literately game breaking. I don't understand why it wasn't given the absolute highest military priority until every battle formation had at least one.
    Between the two world wars the US had a battleship doctrine called "All or Nothing" which resulted in a line of relatively slow but very well protected battleships. The speed was considered not a disadvantage because the Imperial Japanese Navy had no chance of outfighting the battleship group, so there's never a need to run away from a fight using speed. The group of battleship will just slowly sail across the pacific from strategic target to strategic target until the IJN is forced into fighting them. Japan knew this and hence why they focused their efforts on hit and run tactics with things like Long Lance oxygen torpedo and naval aviation.
    Likewise since Star Destroyers are by a wide margin the most powerful capital ship in the galaxy nothing can stand up to them in a straight up gun duel. Rebels almost always make a hastily retreat when SDs show up. An interdictor ship would rob them of that capability and force them into battle that they cannot win.
    Basically every fleet action with Interdictor would basically look like this: th-cam.com/video/PN_CP4SuoTU/w-d-xo.html

  • @toastedzen
