    I stand before my alter to the Lord of Model Painting. My hands tremble as I slowly dip the brush within the pot, the glory of the moment ahead nearly upon me. I put the paint upon the pallet, wash my brush and dilute the paint with water. As I raise the brush, now covered in the diluted paint, to the model, I speak the sacred words of my faith.
    "And our Lord of Model Painting, Duncan Rhodes, did say unto the masses, 'Remember to use two thin coats.'"

    Great video! I love the format; you kept all the best parts from your Warhammer TV stint and made it distinctly your own. I also really enjoy seeing you playing with different blacks and showing the differences.
    You make it look very easy. For those of us mortals that screw up different stages, it'd be great(and very encouraging) to see you do a little series on how you catch and clean up mistakes as you're going along. My daughter gets kind of discouraged when she can't make it look just like a Lord Duncan model, so it would mean something if you showed that you, too, are not infallible and how you work through the process of fixing your mistakes.

    • @DuncanRhodesDRPA
      @DuncanRhodesDRPA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Hi Brad. We have covered that in some video's and we will most certainly take your feedback on board. Tell your daughter to never feel discouraged and to keep practicing. We all make mistakes and they are easily fixed. Most of the time, just go back to the base colour and add it over. Add any shades carefully and then layer up if needed. Sometimes you can quickly remove the paint from your brush, add water to it then remove most of the paint that way with a simple dab of tissue then reapply paint if needed. Thank you for taking the time to comment too 😊

    I like the fact that you don't mix up the colors you need and actually use pre-made colors for everything. I'm not really good at doing that stuff and prefer to use colors straight out of the pot, even if it means buying a few more different hues.

    This video followed a quick format for each color to see application, washing, and highlighting in less than 30 minutes total. Well done Duncan, we look forward to moar! I feel like you were able to cover a lot of information quickly and the format of the paints/brushes/dilution was much faster and clearer to see. Rotating between each painting area really quickly made the entire video easier to get through and much more enjoyable to watch from start to finish without unnecessary extras or breaks. Keep up the good work, looks amazing thus far.

    Why does this mini look so much like Harvey Keitel?
    Excellent technique and use of colour. The highlighting guide and use of contrast to deepen the blacks on the model were definitely worth the watch. Gotta be more bold when highlighting, even on shades of black.
    Also, never painted mousy blonde hair before. That'll be something interesting to add to the toolbox.

    • @DuncanRhodesDRPA
      @DuncanRhodesDRPA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just practice and keeping your hands steady by bracing them together to help steady your painting hand, kinda like resting the bottom of the palms near the wrists together. A painting handle of some type also helps as you can get a better grip and access to the miniature and use it as a brace. Give this a go and see if it helps 😊

    • @DFWNites
      @DFWNites 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of Duncan's Secrets to Steadiness is to have both hands touching each other and holding the model while he's painting,
      so everything moves together as he breathes or leans around to get better light.
      And since the size and shape of the brush is constantly changing
      as the paint moves from the bristles to the mini
      (and the brush blocks visibility anyway),
      another trick I use is to start moving my brush *before* it's touching the model,
      then slowly pull it closer and watch for the highlight to appear,

We actually have a website (duncanrhodes.com) where we release a lot more content for Academy Members including Bolt Action tutorials amongst others (we are adding more and more and have some great stuff planned). We have an in-depth tutorial on brush care on the site too. Generally we release a tutorial every two weeks on You Tube but on our site, we release 2 -3 every week and sometime a large miniature such as Ghazghkull or a AT-ST. We tend to use a plain tile as a dry pallet for smaller projects and then for larger projects or when blending is required, we use a wet palette. Also, thank you for taking the time to comment 😊

  • @dougsundseth6904
    @dougsundseth6904 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    When painting a really dark subject like this while using a white background, you need to increase your camera's exposure. (The camera is trying to pick an exposure that gives you a mid-gray average, and with all that white, it thinks you are using more light than you are.) If you were to use an exposure compensation of about +1.0, the background would actually look white and the mini would show more detail and the difference in blacks would also show better.

    Hello! Great video, I'm about to follow this one applying the colours and techniques to a rogue miniature.
    Can I ask - do you always apply two thin coats to the base paints, before the first wash goes on?

    • @DuncanRhodesDRPA
      @DuncanRhodesDRPA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not always. I apply how many coats are needed to get a solid, smooth colour. Some paints only need on but others need multiple. It also depends how much water or medium you use to thin your paints. We never take paint straight from the pot as this can cause you to lose detail on our miniatures. Hope this helps 😊

      By the way, are you using a glazed wall tile or something to mix your paints on?

    Hi Duncan, I noticed that you watered down that Carroburg Crimson with water. I remember from your old videos at Warhammer TV that you usually diluted shades with a medium. Is this specific too this very paint that can dilute it with water or did you just have to use the medium back than because it was in the script?
    Anyways thanks for the cool vid.

    Sorry Duncan! I would like to ask you (or any other pros here). I've been mostly painting GW miniatures for quite a long time, and recently I've picked up some boxes from this line.
    I would like to ask, while I understand that the plastic for the main body is not hard plastic, I found out that after I primed and did my first base coat of silver (Citadels), the whole model felt a bit 'sticky'.
    is that normal for this line of miniatures? Or have I done something wrong before I primed?
    Please lend me know knowledge! :D

      Hi Askrias, we have never had an issue like this with these miniatures and we have painted tons of them. It could either be the Primer or the Silver. Did you shake both of them well before use? Often, in our experience, not shaking the Primer Spray and metallics well before using them can cause a few strange results.

    This is awesome! Quick question. I’ve dabbled in 3D printing and mini painting, but don’t have a lot of experience. Most tutorials I’ve watched say to prime the minis before painting them - any reason you don’t here? Is it the mini quality? Paint quality?
    Thanks!

      Hi Emily. We went for a grey undercoat/ primer, Mechanicus Standard Grey from Citadel (see beginning of video after Intro sequence). We always recommend priming your miniatures before painting as this allows the paint to adhere to the miniature. hope this helps. 😊

    Good evening Duncan, great to see another video of yours!
    I’m new to painting and have decided to start with WHFB High Elf models. So far infantry models are going find but I also have a Frostheart Phoenix I am struggling to get started with.
    So far I have primed it in Corax White but am struggling to determine the order of paints I should use in priming the model? Do I start dark using the colour for the main central body and add lighter layers? If so, how dark can you go and still make it light? Or do I start with a lighter colour that one would use on the tips of the feathers and add darker layers to it from there?
    Unfortunately, the only phoenix guides I can find online (whether flamespyre or frostheart) all use airbrush sprays instead of brushes, making it rather difficult for me to track how I should be painting the model.
    Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and best wishes,
    Izzie

      Hi Isabel. I'd start from the lighter colours first and then work down to the darker colours using Contrast paints and washes but both using the relevant mediums to ensure each layer is not overpowering 😊
