People are all like "ermagerd, this 'burning the corpse of America' thing is so blatant and pretentious," but by the end you realize that the brazen symbolism was intentionally misleading, drawing your attention away from the reality of who Bridget and Amelie really are, and the murky grey morality of America as a concept.

The only thing I know for sure about Death Stranding is that Hideo Kojima really likes Low Roar.
The in-game recovorable data chip for Low Roar is literally just a description about how Kojima was travelling around outside japan and walked into a grocery store with one of their songs playing over the speakers and he was like "ohhh _hell_ yeah i wanna work with these guys!"

I haven't played death stranding but as a chemist I want to point out that chirality is a property of molecules, including crystal structures.
They're probably trying to thread the needle between "Dimensional reverberation" which happens at a sub particle level and is what I'm guessing that overlayed Hands thing Pat was trying to do was meant to signify. ... @@pareidolist Man, I'm just happy that everyone was able to move on and play to their strengths. I absolutely love Matt's channel and his more produced documentaries, when Matt put out that solo playthrough of No More Heroes 1 I was convinced that the actual informational style was where he shined the most, and he seems so much happier. And I love that Pat and Woolie are basically brothers at this point and just have that unique connection of friendship that you can't fake. Liam's alright when he shows up for some of Matt's LPs, doesn't really have a huge presence.

I honestly felt like Death Stranding’s first couple of hours do an alarmingly bad job of expressing what the gameplay loop is like. It wasn’t until after about six hours of gameplay that I finally felt like I had an understanding of what the actual game was going to be like, and it’s actually really similar to MGSV: you complete objectives while gathering materials- the materials are used to create things that make the objectives easier, and completing those objectives unlocks better tools to create.
The part of the game where you hold forward and press the triggers sometimes is basically something you aim to minimize by laying down structures and unlocking equipment that makes it easier.
It legit sounds like something I would like to play.
Requiring 6 hours to figure out what the game out isn’t normal…
But on a Kojima game it is
Side note, the fact that my first thought was “I wonder if I could make a bot or an AI do a lot of the stuff to hold forward and press triggers” probably means this game is right up my alley!
You made remember me how much time was to get your first skell in Xenoblade Chronicles X but when you finally get, it can barely survive a fight with any of the giant monsters in the game until you waste your time to upgrade.
At least the on foot gameplay was good and far better than in the skell.

I have played quite a bit of this game now and you guys are right. The metaphor is overt. I don't think it has slowed down for a fucking second. It is a parking lot with no bush, but Kojima isn't trying to even hide. He's standing there firing bottle rockets at you, because subtlety is for cowards.

I know that Kojima does some goofy stuff and shitposts hard in his games (especially know that he is unleashed), but Pat is really exagerating this game to abyssmal levels. He says stuff expecting you to freak out as much as he freaks out when someone touches his ice cream he was saving for later.

On a second play through on hard and it's a pretty strong second pass so far, so I'm glad this popped up in my suggestions. More to think about! I think Sam was called just Sam Porter with the occasional Bridges title because he was doing basic deliveries for them. I do think the on-the-nose naming works in this one though because that's just how the naming conventions work in this world. I don't know why it works out instead of being totally stupid, but I think it has to do with tone and pacing achieved by high production value. Also, the theming and plot itself... I dunno. I think it's good, but it really depends on your preferences and where you put your focus. The concealing effect and intrigue comes from what exactly all this imagery and theming means for the tangible story too I suppose; it's a fascinating theme in general so seeing it pan out in a frankly dark future where abstract "likes" are necessary to maintain sanity in the face of an apocalypse is interesting... Kojima has always done good and cool and stupid simultaneously so maybe that's the case once more; on-the-nose, but still entertaining and meaningful in my opinion. Not to mention that the symbolism is far murkier by the end, which I thought would happen frankly.
Edit: I agree he would not make good movies; his stories are too long...maybe good TV though. For all the talk about unsubtle material, he's still a competent storyteller as far as theme and plot go.
Edit edit: When they talk about Cage and Kojima as both being unsubtle, but Kojima at least has an idea of what he's trying to say; that's what turns his pieces into good stories. There is a theme, a plot, and a passion in Kojima's work. Can't always say the same about Cage because he's usually lacking one of the first two.

After that cheerful mission I got to the game proper. The mission was deliver packages to a certain location because of course it was. I also had to pick up stray packages that people had abandoned and deliver them. The map was littered with them. I soon realized I couldn't get them all and this sent my OCD into a frenzy.
I eventually decided to forego with astray packages and just worry about the main mission. But then came the timefall. I quickly had to scurry up a cliff in order to avoid my packages getting destroyed and as soon as I got under a ledge it stopped. So I decided to wander back out and try to make my way to the destination but once I got pretty far from where I was hiding from the goddamn rain it started again. In my haste to hurry back I fell off a ledge and damaged some of my packages. As soon as I got back to where I was hiding before it stopped again. The frustration was compounded by the fact that every time I fell I had to stop to soothe that obnoxious baby.
I eventually found my way to a cliff that I couldn't find my way off of. Then came the timefall. In my haste to find the path I came up from I fell off another cliff and damaged all of my packages and set the baby off again.
Then it hit me. The secret to enjoying a Hideo Kojima game. Turn off Death Stranding and play the first Metal Gear Solid. And I got to tell you I had a lot of fun.
There is no hurrying in this game. The best approach to any mission in the game is to go at something as prepared for anything as you could be.
Sounds to me like this just isn't your kind of game.

@@Brandon_Powell To introduce you to the weather mechanic. It's not good for what you're carrying certainly, but it takes way longer then what you think for the cargo itself to actually get damaged. Plus you can carry some repair spray to undo any damage done by timefall.
The game telling you to hurry is a trap to try and trip you up on purpose. What you want to do is prepare before hand to make the game as easy for *you* as you can make it and the game generously gives you more and more tools to do so the more missions you play.
@@zigmus00A you get a Bonus for a quick Mission and some are timed.
@@viternity6903 it's a pretty insignificant bonus most of the time. Barely in the double digits and not really worth it. And the timed missions are super generous if you can utilize the tools you're given.
Just recently I was given a delivery with a 45 minute time limit that I finished in 10 and that I could have completed *faster* if I utilized a vehicle.
Now y'all are thinking that woolie was just laughing at the ubiquity of STRAND but in reality he actually experienced a cosmic giggle after his brain stranded all the pieces together and he understood how to fix america.

It's about a wizard that convinces a civilization to uproot it's Society in order to spend nine years building him a massive Tower in the desert based on the promise that he would use it to fly them all to a star where they would all live in Paradise.
At the end of the song after the tower is complete the wizard climbs to the top and jumps off hoping to fly to the star but instead falls to the ground and dies leaving what's left of the society to mourn and regret and wonder why they destroyed their civilization for nothing.

I spent a good while KEEPING my one ladder and rope until they nearly deteriorated because I always thought "no I might need this later for an escape". Difference is, I actually did use them later but damn was it hard to do what pat said and be a nice person by climbing up mount horseshit and then drop a rope so noone else has to suffer.

I was skeptical for the years this game was being hyped and now that its out; I'm definitely enjoying everything about it. Traversing the map is actually really fun to me and the crafted items actually feel useful unlike in mgsv where one average gun from the beginning would get the job done rather than the thousands you can craft that dont add much. I'm not done with it yet but I'm loving what I'm playing so far, it's a breath of fresh air for sure. Weird, but fresh.

Death Stranding is the alien planet exploration game I've always wanted with Hideo Kojima stupidity getting in the way.
Yeah, that would work. With Oxygen supply instead of Timefall or whatever. The landscape could even be the Moon or Mars with how rocky it is.
Don't often actively listen to these, but this is somehow the most entertaining hour long discussion about a game about walking and "connections". The one thing that baffles me, is that in the beginning in the game, when choosing the difficulty, It labels itself as an Action Game... boy does it not live up to that.
In many ways I feel David Cage is the gross goopy Chiral symmetry but not quite symmetry hand of Kojima.

That Kojima quote, along with stuff I have heard others say he said in the past (both from dans and haters), gives me the impression Kojima is the kind of person who would say the Customer is a nessasary evil, instead of the customer is always right, i get the idea as an artist, but you need to keep your ego in check if you want to keep making good work that people will like, and if Kojima now has no such restrictions... I am worried if he will go down the path of a M. Night Shanahan or a George Lucas.
I could be completely wrong, on either him having a massive ego, or that Pride (meaning in part arrogance) always leads to a fall, and that Kojima has nothing in place to stop himself from falling.
MGS2 was the MGS that he had most freedom with it, depending of what will think of MGS2, you can somewhat project what his next games will be, unless he completely change his style
@@FelipePalha66 I think Death Stranding being basically the ultimate Walking Sim, gives me the impression he will increasingly try to make more movie like games, if not strictly movies themselves.
Which unless he is happy on making movie like games, I see some failed movie attempts in his future.
And unless Deathstranding does poorly enough not to close down his studio, but enough to make it clear he needs to rain himself in a bit, and make a more game like game, then I can see him pushing to make more movie games, which has a small niche market, lowering his budget and likely making him a bit bitter.
