The thing about the personification of companies is that people express hatred towards companies as if they're people and its way easier to hate somebody than a brand
there is also the fact that a sense of "betrayal" is the most powerful form of hatred, and being seen as a person means being seen as a friend... and thus can be guilty of betrayal when they fuck up.
I won't to believe it is the opposite for me but I might be wrong. I don't hate the people in the company, I hate the corporate machine. That said in The Outer Worlds I do seem to have more disdain for Auntie Cleo's because they are based around a single individual who probably is a fictional invention of the company created to create a sense of connection between the products and buyers! Sad to say but big awesome games can distract people easy, like how Riot announced all their new games and no one is freaking out on them despite Tencent fully owning them. Basically if Blizzard does anything less then an epic legendary announcement, they will get overcome by Free Hong Kong. Blizzcon gonna be goooood.
No one is freaking out about League of Legends being owned by Tencent because we have known for years that the Chinese government wholly owns Riot Games. You are still right. Them making that announcement is potentially drawing attention away from new people discovering that.

A part of me hopes that this will be the best blizz con ever in that hell will raise but another part of me realizes a massive company like blizz that has equally massive budget are (may already have for years) going to strictly vet their con goers so that only the most kosher attend and make sure the con goes smoothy and no uporoar about anything happens. Same with their Q&A segment.
I mean you'd think so but blizzcon has a history of people throwing legendary shade anyway. I don't think there's anything they can do to stop people from faking it till they get up to the microphone at Q/A. Sure they'll get kicked out but they did what they want to.

@riko wolfin I mean I don't really consider the lore team at overwatch the same as the folks making the dumb business decisions. So I still thought it was rather sweet of them.
@@rosenrot234 Well at that point it's still gloried fan fiction, in fact I would consider it worse because the company still uses it and pays the lore team to make it seem like they actually care about making Gay characters while leaving it completely out of the finished game. There is also the fact that you don't actually know if that is true or not, could be that the rushed nature of 76 suddenly becoming gay based on one comic panel of a blurry picture frame that originally was probably just a picture of a old war friend was because some Business man told the lore team to make him gay.
@riko wolfin I didn't find it rushed. I'm a pretty cynical bastard but not that cynical. Also the characters aren't going to go around screaming "GOD I LOVE MEN. HARDER DADDY" in the middle of a shoot out. Even if that would be hilarious
@@rosenrot234 What about the written post of straight fanfiction about him being gay wasn't rushed? Or the fact that again, it was based on a one off panel that was stretched extremely far just to make it about soldier 76 stalking his old gay lover who we never learn fuck all about because they are an object and not a real character. I'm not asking for Soldier 76 to start spouting about how much dick he sucks or how hot his male team mates are, I'm asking for a real relationship to be written instead of the clear baiting they were doing with him suddenly becoming gay for no reason despite it never being brought up once in his back story or him even seeming like the type to stalk people from his past when he clearly has better things to do with his time. Oh ya, and of course put it in the actual game so it's no longer paid fan fiction used to trick people into thinking OW are the good guys... wait they can't, China hates the gays and everyone working for Blizzard gets paid by China to not include that stuff in the game. You might think you're cynical, but when you start believing the people getting paid by the scum bag companies to do scum bagish things aren't also scum bags with literally nothing but good will to go on, then I think you might have a brighter perspective on life than you would like to believe.
While I dislike Pat's whole "everything good a company does is horrible because money" becuase it ignores the actual good even if it is just for money, 100% Blizzard is gonna do stuff to save face.

@dalkurumitokisaki I mean to be fair in a game with robots and sci fi tech shit, having gay folks in it really isn't that big of a jarring surprise. Imo soldiers gay reveal was just badly timed. I doubt the lore folks could have predicted people would be pissed over Diablo when they were going to do their little announcement. So the reveal came when people were pissed and staring Blizzard down with a magnifying glass.
@@rosenrot234 I might just be too cynical, but I think it's the other way around: Blizzard got in trouble for Diablo, so they made Soldier gay as a bright, shiny distraction. Chris Metzen created Soldier to be a comic book hero before Blizzard was even founded, and Metzen doesn't strike me as the type to have made a gay character way back then.
@@RCKChich Don't you *fucking dare* put words in my mouth. There is *absolutely nothing wrong* with being gay. There is something *very* wrong with making characters gay for the *SOLE* purpose of scoring brownie points. Make a character gay because it fits them, because it speaks to who they are, because it strengthens the story. Or simply because you want a gay character in your piece of work. All of those are valid reasons, but doing it as a cynical move to make your soulless corporation look noble is shitty. And so is putting words in my mouth.
While you may not like the selfish motives behind giving to charity to get people on your side, you have to step back to realize what just happened. We've set up a system where someone, out of their selfish self interest did something good for potentially vulnerable people. When a government gets involved though, people use selfish motivations to harm people though, in the case of China and Blizzard.
Another reason WWE has stopped getting recognition for their charity things is because of their Saudi Arabia events. They host these extravagant events every year and bend over backwards to have everything the Saudi prince (a massive wrestling fan) wants, because he payed a fucking crazy amount of money for them to host shows there (I think it's like billions of dollars for each show). They always hype up how great the country is on commentary, how progressive it is (even though women weren't even allowed to be shown ON SCREEN for the first few events), and how lucky they are to be there. I should probably mention that the second event they ever had in Saudi Arabia was during the investigation of that murdered journalist.
the counter point in that Blizzard was not allowed to use that rule based on the wording "Blizzards SOLE discretion". Blizzard didn't make that decisions based on their sole discretion so it is completely invalid.
EA did that "hide behind gay people" thing back in the Mass Effect 3 fiasco. People are mad about the state of the game? "Oh you guys just don't like that we've got gay characters." They said to the same audience who took tons of flak over ME1 apparently being an alien lesbian sex simulator. Seriously, EA responded to the Worst Company In America award by blaming homophobic trolls, and The Consumerist actually made a statement to say "literally none of the comments attached to votes for EA mentioned anything about gay anything." It's one of the reasons I don't buy anything from EA anymore (and now Blizzard too). It's disgusting.
I feel bad for the people that just work there at blizzard. Not the idiots making the business decisions like this. They're going to be at blizzcon just trying to have a fun convention and they're probably going to get booed the entire show like it's their fault.
I hate to defend Chicom supporters, but I would like to remind Woolie and Pat that the word "Revolution" evokes different memories in China than it might in Canada. 9 months later I haven't heard this mentioned in a minute.
As someone who plays Hearthstone regularly, Blizzard just changed a handful of card arts to pander towards China
Every TCG does this unfortunately. Skeletons, gore, and provocative clothing are a no-no. They either avoid it altogether or produce alternate card art for the Chinese version.

The thing about the personification of companies is that people express hatred towards companies as if they're people and its way easier to hate somebody than a brand
*MY BRAND!*
there is also the fact that a sense of "betrayal" is the most powerful form of hatred, and being seen as a person means being seen as a friend... and thus can be guilty of betrayal when they fuck up.
Yet I wave my fist at Auntie Cleo and imagine her out there somewhere in space being ambiguously evil!
Man that game could not have come out at a better time! It is just the video game industry in space!

Blizzard has learned the lesson that when you knee-jerk too hard, you may end up breaking your knee-cap in the process.
CAN'T WAIT FOR BLIZZCON SOON
IT'S GONNA BE GREAT, GUYS
I imagine if they announce Diablo 4 or Starcraft 3, something anything huge that could overcome the Free HK protest.
Give me Warcraft 4
Fuckers are probably going to do an announcement teaser for warcraft 4 to take off the heat.
No one is freaking out about League of Legends being owned by Tencent because we have known for years that the Chinese government wholly owns Riot Games.
You are still right. Them making that announcement is potentially drawing attention away from new people discovering that.
There have been a lot of talks about blizzard employees big and small that THIS is the blizzcon to go to if you are going to go to one
V J I feel it'll just stoke the fires more, theyll get their money but now there's even more eyes on everyone. All they have to do is make it online only or censor certain words. And you know theyre gonna fuck up.
@@UndeadGary After last year they probably won't do live audience Q&As anymore. They'll just have a roundtable and read submitted questions probably.
@@SuzakuX ya your probably right. But I hope they are that stupid and have an open mic.

i'm finally vindicated for calling out post launch characters becoming gay out of nowhere like soldier 76
I called that out day one for what it was and my friends who love gay characters tried their hardest to defend it.
Now they are super regretting ever falling for that shit and it feels soooo good to hear them say that.
I look forward to the podcast after blizzcon
While I dislike Pat's whole "everything good a company does is horrible because money" becuase it ignores the actual good even if it is just for money, 100% Blizzard is gonna do stuff to save face.

2:50 - On the topic of private Chinese tech companies and their relations with the Chinese government:
The way things are is that the government exerts influence on Chinese companies indirectly through officers and directors in the boards of those companies who are also members of the Chinese Communist Party. For example: Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, is a member of the Communist Party of China. In Tencent's case, their founder and CEO Ma Huateng is a member of the National People's Congress.

I'm with pat on Overwatch's representation: Tracer was probably planned, but the others were PR bait.
@@thomasderosso5625 Because being gay is antithetical to being a hero, right?
@@RCKChich Don't you *fucking dare* put words in my mouth. There is *absolutely nothing wrong* with being gay. There is something *very* wrong with making characters gay for the *SOLE* purpose of scoring brownie points. Make a character gay because it fits them, because it speaks to who they are, because it strengthens the story. Or simply because you want a gay character in your piece of work. All of those are valid reasons, but doing it as a cynical move to make your soulless corporation look noble is shitty. And so is putting words in my mouth.
@@RCKChich Shut the fuck up.
I can't find where it is, but Pat shows his Canadian Inferiority Complex in relation to America in this podcast.
It is going to be a trainwreck of spectacular proportions.
42:00 "forgive me master, I will have to use THAT technique"
the counter point in that Blizzard was not allowed to use that rule based on the wording "Blizzards SOLE discretion". Blizzard didn't make that decisions based on their sole discretion so it is completely invalid.
Damn 43 mins? Ty woolie
Who was the EVO winner they cut out that Woolie was talking about, and why were they censored?
Welp, Pat just admitted to getting himself banned from China
You know what’s funny they are removing mei items from the blizzard store
I hate to defend Chicom supporters, but I would like to remind Woolie and Pat that the word "Revolution" evokes different memories in China than it might in Canada. The last time China had a revolution was within the memory of some people who are still alive and it directly resulted in the deaths of around 2,000,000 people and put policies in place that cased a famine that killed 30,000,000 people.
