    The Most factor of this video was the points you discussed on the TIME / Commitment it takes to maintain something like this... setting up is very easy BUT keeping them happy and neat is whole different task. Thats a very very valid point you stressed! Very useful!

    Second job...thats a full time job and a half! lol. Awesome aviary! Im looking to get into breeding but something Ive quickly learned from watching videos from people in the industry... I dont think I wanna mess around with 500 birds lol. Really passionate about bringing birds that bring lots of joy to people, but with the amount of work and time and some physical disabilities, sadly I think I need to avoid spending time on things like Zebra finches that I don't really think will bring the same joy to someone that say a conure would. But who knows, its really helpful learning from people that are active in the industry currently. Thanks for making the videos you do!

    I have used corncob bedding for my avairies for over 23 years. Its heavy in weight, and finches flying dont remove it from ground. It has worked fantastic. The only problem with it is if it gets to wet from very heavy bathing it can start to mold into a clump . Water and corn don't mix well if it happens to often it can cause aspergillosis mold to grow, however finches bath is generally short, or bath container can be put into another "collection" container so bedding stays drier. It's pretty, sand colored, all natural and my avairy is in a public setting built above a row of washers at our laundromat in WI. It works great for my flights at home also, it holds seed hulls, and thrown seed, so it's not all over the house. It has a very natural fresh ground corn smell. I buy it in 50# bags at any local pet supply. So YES I would highly recommend it over cat litter which contained clay, and can impact finches digestion track if they can reach it, and think its grit. Corn cob bedding is dry, absorbent, heavy weight, and I have had zero issues with it. In the avairy finches hop on it, dig thru it looking for any escaped mealworms ect. I actually let a mealworms colony grow in it. The avairy is all glass, so it's all self contained and mealworms cant get out, once in a great while I might find a beetle adult mealworms out of avairy, but very rare. I highly recommend it. Hi in europe many people use small wood chips for floor cover. As for fragrance if you use a humidifier many allow use of scented oils... I like your warning about the amount of time, and your standards of cleanliness. I am amazed in UK how many people fail to clean enough! Very helpful video, thank you.

    • @paradiseaviary
      @paradiseaviary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @kingfisherphil, Thank you so much for that idea I never though about a humidifier, ill look into that! yes cleanliness should always be the #1 goal with any aviary this helps avoid so many problems! unfortunetly its not easy to keep big set ups like this clean and this is where many start to fall behind and encounter health problems with their flocks.

    You might try pelleted horse bedding. It comes in big 50# bags and would be cost effective. You can find it at any farm supply store or I’m sure you can order it online. It is heavy enough that I don’t think it will fly out of cages as the birds fly around. It’s smells good (woody smell) and absorbs wonderfully. I don’t have as many cages as you do but I do use that bedding for my horses and other farm animals. I hope this helps.

  • @GabyKen35
    @GabyKen35 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Chris, For the bottom of the cage I use corn cobs that has been chopped up and it absorbs the bird waste and lasts a long time. I live in Ontario Canada and a 40 lb bag costs around $25.00. I think it's much cheaper then cat litter.

    Hi, very nice breeding cages i must say. What I put on the bottom of my breeding cages are beech snips. They are smaller and more compact than your cedar wood chips. The advantages of these chips are that they will not move as much and fall next to the cages because of the flapping. Also, the birds will not take these chips to put in their nests. The beech wood also has a fresh, woody smell to cover the birds smell. They absorbe fluids and smells. Maybe you could give this a try.

    • @paradiseaviary

      @paradiseaviary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jonathan Gomez Thank you, ill do a video on the lighting schedule but so you have an idea how i get it done the birds get no less than 10 hours a day of light and as you start to prepare them for the breeding season you begin to increment the amount of light hours over a period of a few months. I start my breeding season in Oct/Nov so around July the birds are at 10-11 hrs of light a day every 2 weeks I increment 15min extra thats 30min a month so by Oct/Nov they are at 13-14 hours of daylight and are conditioned to breed. Once the season is over you repeat take away 15min every 2 weeks until you get back down to 10hrs and this induces a moult im the birds.

    I have 8 cages right now and can’t imagine having to clean as many as yours. But amazing setup! How do you clean the bottom grates?I haven’t found an efficient way of cleaning those yet. and do you transfer the birds temporarily?

    • @paradiseaviary
      @paradiseaviary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you @Jann Paolo Sy, Ohhh yea its very time consuming, but i love it 🙂. The bottom grates are a pain!!! I use a small wire brush similar to the ones used to clean bbq grills and scrub the poop. I dont transfer the birds so as you can imagine for about 20sec they are scared while i do this but its quick. I figure they would be just as stressed or maybe even more if i had to grab them and transfer them another cage and back again.

      That makes sense actually as it takes me up to a minute to even catch them, I’ll try cleaning the grills with them in.

    Hi how do you keep the cages on top of each other without a stand and for them not to fall over? Did you fix them onto the wall? when I put my cages on top of Each other like that they start to rock back to front when my heavier birds start to fly from side to side.

    I did something pretty similar to what you did with the x-mas tree shrubs inside my aviary. Today when I got home I found that two of my gouldians had decided to pair up and build a nest in the shrub, despite the fact that I am offering both nest boxes, baskets and coconuts. I have never seen gouldians make a free nest before. I uploaded the clip of me filming it, but am not sure I am allowed to link it here. In your experience, how uncommon is it that gouldians do this?

Even though you have trouble with your cedar scattered all over the place, it's still very neat and organized. Well done my friend. I hope to have a similar set up but maybe with just a few breeding cages, hahaha.

    Hi. Did the cat litter work for the smell in your bird room?

    • @paradiseaviary
      @paradiseaviary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Greyling, no it did not but i figured out what was causing the smell. It was the watercup that i put in the cage for them to bathe, the water spills ontop of the poop and seed thats on the tray and causes that bad smell. So i removed their bathing water and solved the problem. Ill be making an updated video soon on the new material im using gor the cage bottom

    I use fine, soft pine shavings in the bottom of the cages. We have a supplier in my area that has this in large bales and it's advertised as having no dust, which I can verify is true. I've never used cedar because it's so toxic to a lot of birds and animals, plus the chips are very coarse and not as absorbent. Yeah, I love the smell too, but. . . I did try the ground corn cob bedding a long time ago, but you end up with seed moths (Indian meal moths) with that.

    • @paradiseaviary
      @paradiseaviary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Coop is the soft pine shaving also a pain to keep in the trays with the birds flapping around ? Luckly used ceader for many years and never had any probs but have had a few people already tell me the same thing about it being dangerous! The cat litter was a fail so now looking for a different alternative lets see what i find.

    • @coop5329
      @coop5329 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paradiseaviary I apologize I didn't go back and see your question for so long! No, there is no problem with the specific brand of shavings I use--there is no dust, it has all been cleaned out. There is also not a problem with the birds' flying around kicking up shavings into the water and food cups. I do also keep fancy pigeons, and those bigger birds are powerful enough fliers that they do kick the shavings up into the air, so I use a heavier brand of wood chips for them. The soft pine shavings are a much different brand than anything carried in the feed stores here for poultry bedding etc. , and of course it is a premium price but that is not a problem when using it in bird cages instead of chicken coops or horse stalls!

    you are giving great advice as to think about it long hard do thorough research, I have devoted and dedicated my life to breeding and it’s definitely long long hours of work cleaning regulating air humidity expenses, I must sacrifice vacations trips with the family and this part really sucks but I would not change my habits because preservation breeding is a very important thing for me to do. I have been using newspapers sand paper walnut chips towels so many things i use chlorahexidine for mopping floors but yes, you need lots of knowledge on breeding whether it’s show yorkies or conure eclectus lorikeets a thorough knowledge of genetics’ and diet line breeding do’s and don’ts of crossbreeding all these are to be taken very seriously, cleanliness is key and ultimately it’s quite fulfilling to me thank you honey oh i forgot lighting needs for all the pets, i hate smells so i use a variety of air purifiers essential oils fabric softener sheets lots of lavender proper air flow is necessary thanks again honey
