A few days later… Klay Thompson deal

  • Klay Thompson doesn’t play for the Golden State Warriors anymore. It’s still weird to type that sentence.
No more Steph and Klay. No more splash brothers.
But is he the missing piece for the Dallas Mavericks?
Can putting him next to Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving be the move that gets them an NBA championship?
There’s no doubt that Luka should be operating in the most space of his career.
But will the defensive questions be too much to overcome, leading to the inevitable fate that they’ll succumb to the gauntlet that is the Western Conference?

I think current day Klay is 2x the defender of Tim Hardaway and a much better shooter. If they do a similar structure swapping out Klay with grimes/najee 50/50 playtime as the mavs do with the bigs I don't see the problem - even in the playoffs. The bigger question might be if Klay would be open to the 50/50 playtime. But we'll see when the season starts.

Yeah as I said in the video, Klay’s mindset is the biggest X factor in this whole thing.

The offense could be electric with Luka in that much space. But I don’t think it makes them the title favorite by any means.

We literally just upgraded our Finals team
they will run through the west

Yeah because the team that beat the number one, number three, and number four seeds to get to the finals upgrading at three positions shouldn’t be considered the favorite. 🙄

I think Mavs is still the best team in the west with the addition of Klay Thompson to the Mavs He is the third man behind Luka and Kyrie. But the Celtics are in my opinion the team that will repeat as champion this coming 2024-2025 NBA season.

Don’t forget PJ Washington. He dominated the OKC series because he got to keep shooting corner threes which he’s great at. Boston adjusted their defense in a way that stopped the corner shot and it turned him into a non-factor in the finals.
So you tell me… is the defense going to try to double Luka, are they going to try to stop Kyrie, are they going to keep a man on Klay, or are they going to take away the corner 3? if you try to play Dončić one on one when he’s healthy, he’s going to put up a 35 point triple double on you every single night. On a night when he’s feeling it, he might put up a 55 point triple double.
Even in a bad Boston series Kyrie had a game where he put up 35 so he’s always a threat, and Thompson is obviously going to destroy you if you leave him alone. This isn’t just about getting better shots for Luka and Kyrie, or more offense because of Klay’s points, you’re going to make Washington more effective player and you’re going to give Lively a chance to prove he can shoot from the corner or develop a post move that most centers in the league will have trouble with. It makes the whole team better because there’s no defense in the league that could take everything away.

PJ Washington definitely caught fire in that OKC series but he was only 32% from the corners on the year. 35% for his career. But he’s going to have every opportunity to bring that up because he’s going to be WIDE OPEN all year long.
The biggest question is whether they can guard enough on the other end in the playoffs.

@@who.won.sports you always have to take some bad with the good and the are going to give up a few more points than last year in the playoffs. Still, Luka being 100% healthy and maybe a little more motivated to keep the weight off and stay quick for a great shot at his first ring could get you some of what you lost from losing Jones. Then again they say that Marshall is basically as good as defender as Jones but a much better shooter so maybe on nights when the defense is struggling you give him more minutes. Tough to project out that far before we’ve ever even seen them on the floor, but no matter what I think the offense gained is more than the defense lost.

@@who.won.sports I liked josh green .. his plays were defense and run dunk and spot up shoot 🤣. In my mind his main problem was getting in his head and being scared to shoot. I presume Klay will get plays that work for him and he's not scared to shoot. I like Timmy too but his court awareness was brutal and his dad talking in podcasts couldn't have been great for locker room. He was ultimate feast or famine no in between I'm begging for in between after 5 yrs of Timmy bless his heart he wasn't scared tho 🤣

Oh I was rooting for Josh Green. Definitely like him as a rotational wing. I just didn’t think they were calling his name in a lot of sets.

In addition to Klay getting "ALL THE TIMMIE PLAYS" lol, I think Klay will benefit by the change of pace that happens when Luka goes to the bench and Kyrie is running, Lively/Gafford dunking and Klay shooting 3's. I can't wait to see that!
