Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is a 2001 American computer-animated science fiction film directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series of role-playing video games. It was the first photorealistic computer-animated feature film and was the most expensive video game-inspired film until the release of Prince of Persia in 2010. It features the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Alec Baldwin, Donald Sutherland, James Woods, Ving Rhames, Peri Gilpin and Steve Buscemi.

My stepdad was watching me play Doom 3 when it came out and he asked me "Why the extra shots?" after I shot a couple of corpses. I answered, "Just making sure." He understood when he played it for himself and realized how many corpses were actually sleeping zombies.
@@JT044-iz1cv it wasn't. i mean sure the first time or 2 the jump scares were a little scary. but afterwards they got old fast. now if you want a truly scary game i suggest playing through RE7. and if you want an even scarier time with it play it in V.R. i've played it both ways. and i gotta say that the V.R version almost made me sick a few times. not that is was badly made but how immersive it makes you feel

I used to work at a small Video Store a few years ago and I would always run older obscure movies during my shift to get people talking and renting old things. I threw this on one day and everyone was entranced by it and then shocked to learn it came out in 2001... it rented quite well.

It's so weird seeing how this animation was friggin' GROUNDBREAKING for 2001, but nowadays games I have on my steam library have these graphics or better and they were sold half-off.
Disney's Dinosaur came out the same year and it's better.
Plus, this animation looks better than the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns.

27:53 Trying to pass "the phantoms are actually ghosts" off as a twist is pretty weak, but there's a bigger problem. As a reveal, it doesn't _mean_ anything - knowing that they're ghosts doesn't open new options for dealing with them or add any dramatic weight. It's just there so the writers can mark off "plot twist" on the "Writing a Screenplay for Dummies" worksheet.
I guess the idea is that the phantoms come from a dead world, and if we let Gaia be destroyed, we'll end up the same way?

Honestly Archer Is funnier when you take it out of context... Because outside of Archers performance i don't find the rest of the show that funny because the characters are too anoying to be likeble and the animation Is not really that fun to watch in my opinion. Look phatom Strider video to find out my problems with the show.

Shamalama is legit a prick in real life, I saw him on the street once in LA and he actually kicked a stray dog. Hes walking back to his car and this cute little pupper just trots on toward him and he sees it and literally just fucking punts this little dog like 5 feet with people around and everything. This whole time hes carrying a starbucks cup in one hand and his douchey 300$ sunglasses in the other. Anyway, really reflects bad on him as a person, but I saw this right before I accidentally hit the dog so I dont know if I really have room to talk.

My two bits? This movie lacked anything particularly "Final Fantasy" about it to the point where FFXV feels more Final Fantasy than this movie. XD

It has the classic monsters, it has characters with different weapons and abilities, it has kingdoms and empires, it has Summoned Monsters (or "gods"), and though used differently than any other Final Fantasy games, 15 at least makes use of SOME magical abilities! Sure, in the form of magic grenades and a magic ring - but there's still magic! AND a crystal! *NONE* of which is ANYWHERE in The Spirits Within!
I'm convinced Hironobu Sakuguchi only directed this so he'd have a reason to resign from Square.

But sure, besides that, totally the same.
Sakaguchi is a good videogame director, but a movie director he isn't. And that's fine. It's like Nomura, who is a good art and character designer, but a really bad videogame director. Noone can be good at everything.
As you know, exposition works best when introduced with the words, "as you know".
This movie seems more like an extended tech demo than something we should pay to see
The fact that this Nostalgia Critic video is the best example for why AI would be a horrible replacement for actors is insane.

The theater was almost empty, THAT was a sign of things to come.
I just love the fact that Malcom and Tamra are being nice to him even though he tried to crush them flat.
"Virtual actors" aka just reusing models in 3d animated movies and pretending that makes it revolutionary instead of lazy.
Who will care about models? People will only care about the voice actors.

stick figure animation is also very cheap but with dramatic special effects and cgi can be transformed into something truly amazing

To be fair, while the hair, clothing, and environmental textures in this movie look awful, the actual faces on the characters are still pretty impressive, in my opinion.
I'll still say, for a movie that's 18 years old, the animation still holds up.
I just wanna thank you guys for shouting out HDSA. I lost my grandma, an aunt and will lose my dad to Huntington's Disease but thanks to a lot of groundbreaking research it's looking like we may have seen the last generation to have to suffer it.

How's a virtual actor suppose to work? I mean whats the point you still have to hire a voice actor.
Yeah, and once that actor passes away, or if they quit the role, or get too old for it, someone else will have to take over and it'll be odd. It won't be the same character.
@AT Productions I've not seen that with online artists but it makes me think of Miku Hatsune, maybe. But Miku uses a voice program to speak and that program is only modeled on a person's voice, it's not acted out completely by a person.
I assume it's to have a familiar face in several different CGI movies that otherwise don't have anything in common. For example, you know how you can easily recognize Jean Claude van Damme in all the movies he plays in despite the fact that those movies don't have anything else in common? I guess it's something like that, but for CGI movies.
Voice actors are like, 1000x cheaper then big name actors. Who are gonna ask for the same amount regardless so not the smartest plan.
I liked the film as a stand alone film I just would have liked it alot better had Final Fantasy wasn't slapped on it, that was it's downfall.
Super agreed. I remember going with a friend to see it in theaters and we both are huge FF fans, so it was kind of a slap in the face to us. But I watched it a few years ago, and as a standalone film, it's definitely not horrible.
Disagree. On it's own merits, the movie is boring and badly written. It has no redeeming qualities at all.
For me Final Fantasy was all about the four elemental crystals. I'm sure somebody would know what final fantasy is aside from the spiky blonde guy carrying a big fat sword.

When seeing this movie after all this time I've just realised that Nathan Drake in Uncharted franchise looks very much like Captain Grey Edwards

Honestly, I never understood the weirdly condensed hatred for that movie.
I remember it certainly being an 'interesting' movie, if a bit confusing.
It's not a bad sci fi animation, the thing is it was marketed as a Final Fantasy movie. Fans of the franchise waited a decade for a movie about Final Fantasy. It did have the Final, but it lacked the Fantasy. It should have been marketed as a scifi movie with ground breaking graphics.
Sure, the whole eco warrior part has been part of the franchise for a long time, but it didn't feature any swords. Fighter like swords, and so do I. The Fantasy genre is called sword and sorcery for a reason. It had neither.
