I agree Joel. As good as Pho is, Bun Bo Hue is far superior! I've tried it in the north, central and the south. I think it tastes the best where it originated from in central Vietnam! It's even my go to meal when I eat Vietnamese here in Australia.

Later, the master chefs no longer worked in the king but went out to open shops to sell to the people and spread the cuisine all over the country. Growing up in US Georgia, never ate pig trotters as a child because my mother considered them too country to put on the table. I found a great diner later and enjoyed them greatly. Even later found a Thai restaurant that made a similar bowl (more local vegges) and ate it ever since.

Hello Joel Li and mum dad all this food is outstanding I just love bowls of food like this but I’m not a pig trotter fan. When I worked in the Restaurant trade all our stocks we made especially veal stock had pig trotter for the gelatine consistency.

Many of Vietnamese dishes leave sauces on the side to pour to taste, and use to dip meats. Seems you have mixed pouring some nước mắm (fish sauce) from the big container that you thought was holding tea to the banh bột lọc and bánh nậm. The cơm hến can be much more umami if there is a bit more of the fermented shrimp sauce. It would be less dry from what I see. Local cuisine like cơm hến can’t just replicated past central Vietnam because of the herbs from the region. That dish is deceptively simple, enjoy that while you’re in Hue. Kudos for the classy treatment of the old lady.

Joel, there are more vietnamese dishes with Rice because vietnamese food is not mainly noodles. You will have to look for vietnamese every day dishes. Say like Tom Yum, vietnamese have like 10 types of sour soup dish you eat with rice. Vietnamese mainly have food with 3 things, a salty protein dish and a plain, or flavourful soup dish, and a vegetable dish. I'll give you an example, if it's braised pork with eggs, "thit kho Tau", you eat it with pickled mustard greens, with rice or blanched vegetable and the broth you used yo blanch the vegetable, we usually squeeze lime and add a bit of salt and that's your soup to cleanse your palate. Hope you will do more of this in your upcoming videos. Not alot of westerner understand this concept and maybe you can shed some light. Maybe if you search like a type of protein to get the dish, and ask some vietnamese what soup and vegetables compliment the protein they will teach you.
Len, I have to ask if you are being serious. I plan to visit Vietnam many more times in the near future, I had it in my carry-on luggage and I presented it with no problem… you really have heard of people getting a drone confiscated?
@@JoelsTastyRide Hi Joel, yes I'm serious. Normally you need a flight permit doc Nr. 36/2008/ND-CP issued by the ministry of defense to fly a drone in Vietnam. But that's hard to get as a foreigner and even many locals don't know about the permit and just fly their drone around happily. Normally nothing happens because police officers are just curious about drones. But try to avoid sensitive areas like police department etc. In comparison to other Airports Da Nang Airport(especially international terminal because they have scanners after baggage claim) is pretty sensitive with drones because it's also a military airport and the surrounding area on the hills have radar stations. Therefore nearly complete Da Nang City understandably is a no fly zone(you can look it up on DJI geo zone map). I know you can see many videos from TH-camr using a drone but I bet they don't have a permit and bring their drone on their own risk. Since you are already in Vietnam and nothing happened I'd don't think something will happen next. Just be careful and avoid flying your drone at spots where it is not allowed(declared on signs for ex. At Nguyen Hue street in Saigon). Wish you a good flight and happy food 😃👌
Maybe it is because it is from Huế, our former capital with a relatively small population to compare with other bigger cities like Saigon or Hanoi. So it is not that 'popular' like 'Phở' or 'Hủ tiếu' or ' Bún chả'. Personally I love Bún bò Huế the most, despite being born in Hanoi though. The best noodle soup of Vietnam from my taste.

Everybody *knows* bun bo hue is >> pho but noone wants to say it! The one you ate didn't seem too spicy (there's usually reddish flecks of chili oil) but since you're in Hue, they know what they're doing! lol
Cause it’s spicy and not belong like spicy stuff. BBH if it’s not spicy, it’s not the same. Pho, it’s the same with or without the spicy siracha/hoisin sauce. Also BBH have some stuff that can turn a few ppl off, like blood sausage, pork trotter…

Did you know that most taxi/car/bike drivers have connections with these restaurants ? they have their shares in bringing customers to these places, regardless the food is bad or good. Many tourists get trapped to these places, because they don't know there's tight connections between these business people (money talk).

Many of Vietnamese dishes leave sauces on the side to pour to taste, and use to dip meats. Seems you have mixed pouring some nước mắm (fish sauce) from the big container that you thought was holding tea to the banh bột lọc and bánh nậm. The cơm hến can be much more umami if there is a bit more of the fermented shrimp sauce. It would be less dry from what I see. Local cuisine like cơm hến can’t just replicated past central Vietnam because of the herbs from the region. That dish is deceptively simple, enjoy that while you’re in Hue.

Yess, for me, bún bò Huế is no.1, next is bún riêu, then come phở.
Joel, there are more vietnamese dishes with Rice because vietnamese food is not mainly noodles. You will have to look for vietnamese every day dishes. Say like Tom Yum, vietnamese have like 10 types of sour soup dish you eat with rice. Vietnamese mainly have food with 3 things, a salty protein dish and a plain, or flavourful soup dish, and a vegetable dish. I'll give you an example, if it's braised pork with eggs, "thit kho Tau", you eat it with pickled mustard greens, with rice or blanched vegetable and the broth you used yo blanch the vegetable, we usually squeeze lime and add a bit of salt and that's your soup to cleanse your palate. Hope you will do more of this in your upcoming videos. Not alot of westerner understand this concept and maybe you can shed some light. Maybe if you search like a type of protein to get the dish, and ask some vietnamese what soup and vegetables compliment the protein they will teach you.

Len, I have to ask if you are being serious. I plan to visit Vietnam many more times in the near future, I had it in my carry-on luggage and I presented it with no problem… you really have heard of people getting a drone confiscated?
@@JoelsTastyRide Hi Joel, yes I'm serious. Normally you need a flight permit doc Nr. 36/2008/ND-CP issued by the ministry of defense to fly a drone in Vietnam. But that's hard to get as a foreigner and even many locals don't know about the permit and just fly their drone around happily. Normally nothing happens because police officers are just curious about drones. But try to avoid sensitive areas like police department etc. In comparison to other Airports Da Nang Airport(especially international terminal because they have scanners after baggage claim) is pretty sensitive with drones because it's also a military airport and the surrounding area on the hills have radar stations. Therefore nearly complete Da Nang City understandably is a no fly zone(you can look it up on DJI geo zone map). I know you can see many videos from TH-camr using a drone but I bet they don't have a permit and bring their drone on their own risk. Since you are already in Vietnam and nothing happened I'd don't think something will happen next.
Just be careful and avoid flying your drone at spots where it is not allowed(declared on signs for ex. At Nguyen Hue street in Saigon). Wish you a good flight and happy food 😃👌

Maybe it is because it is from Huế, our former capital with a relatively small population to compare with other bigger cities like Saigon or Hanoi. So it is not that 'popular' like 'Phở' or 'Hủ tiếu' or ' Bún chả'.
Personally I love Bún bò Huế the most, despite being born in Hanoi though. The best noodle soup of Vietnam from my taste.

Bun Bo Hue is a central Vietnamese noodle soup. The area is not a famous. That's why the dish is not famous. I love this noodle soup.

Everybody *knows* bun bo hue is >> pho but noone wants to say it! The one you ate didn't seem too spicy (there's usually reddish flecks of chili oil) but since you're in Hue, they know what they're doing! lol

Here’s a secret which is kinda unspoken: vn people love foreigners and appreciate it when they eat our cuisine.
Cause it’s spicy and not belong like spicy stuff. BBH if it’s not spicy, it’s not the same.
Pho, it’s the same with or without the spicy siracha/hoisin sauce.
Also BBH have some stuff that can turn a few ppl off, like blood sausage, pork trotter…

Did you know that most taxi/car/bike drivers have connections with these restaurants ? they have their shares in bringing customers to these places, regardless the food is bad or good. Many tourists get trapped to these places, because they don't know there's tight connections between these business people (money talk).
