    Got my first dro , sino, the Chinese manuel sucks and I'm not a wizard but not stupid either so I'll be watching your videos over and over. I appreciate the time you've taken and you explain very clearly. THANKS FROM OHIO.

    Good instruction Jon, it may be worth doing a follow-up on calibrating these DRO,s using gauge blocks

    • @terrycannon570
      @terrycannon570 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree 100%. The greater confidence I have in the accuracy of my DRO the more I will use it. I've used blocks to calibrate mine but do not have the confidence in myself that I am as accurate as I should be.

      Good point, I was able to borrow some stick mics, and over 600 mm the DRO was out by 1.2 mm on my newly fitted linear scales, there is a scaling parameter to correct this. I think there was also an incremental scaling parameter, ref every 50mm or so.

      I know my dro is out as I've checked it and tried to recalibrate it, but using the manual it refuses to go into the recalibration mode. I've followed it about ten times at different times and still the same result. In the same way my dro will not allow you to reset a zero when in imperial. I have to switch into metric reset to the dimension I want ( let's say diameter of the work) then go back into imperial if I'm working that way. It's bloody annoying. I'm seriously thinking of replacing the DRO unit for a better one despite the extra cost as long as it will work with the glass scales, even if I have to rewire the plug to get it to work.

    I watched about half of this, then went back to watch This Old Tony's video on DRO's. Came back here and I have to say a much clearer explanation of whats going on. I look forward to seeing you covering off more on DRO's as I think that there is far more you can do with them than people suspect.
    I'm in the happy, or unfortunate position of of having 3 machines with DRO's on them, all 3 being different manufacturers. I need to get my head around the old Heidenhain system on my new to me mill, still to be set in position.

    Fantastic layman's explanation of ABS and INC, another good use if you have both sets of measurements on a drawing is to cross check between both. If your working using INC, before say drilling a hole is to do a quick check in ABS to make sure the measurements coincide.

    Well explained Jon . Only my big mill has a dro at this stage . Yes , some drawings can get overloaded with construction lines & dimensions esp as we were never allowed to dimension inside a part on a drawing . A lot has seemed to change on drawings since the standards we were taught in the late 70's & early 80's . 👍

    Very helpful video Jon. I would love to see more DRO function videos. Those of us who own import DRO’s know the manuals that come with them are not clearly worded on how or when to use the many functions. SDM for example, is one mine has but I have no idea how to use it. More videos on this subject would go a long way to help get full use out of the many functions available.

    Excellent synopsis on dimensions, im guessing many hobbyists never have the chance to view or work with professional engineering drawings, surprisingly, each detail draughtsperson can be quite different as you no doubt know. An art form when done well.

    • @bostedtap8399
      @bostedtap8399 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jonsworkshop Yep, been confused by dotted lines, and drawings that were in both 1st hand and 3rd hand projection, maybe an idea for a video?, I still have to think when looking at drawings now, used to be automatic, even though reading title block beforehand for view, scale, dimensions etc.
      A great help now is most 2D GA's and detail drawings are generated from 3D models, so there's a small ortho model shown, or several, plus sections on complex or high end components.
      Best regards John

There is a function where you can preset the dimensions using Inc and just dial to ZERO on each dimension. I would love to see more about Inc and any other functions of the DRO. Bolt circle function finding different angles etc. I am all about learning new things so you can bet I will be here waiting for the next videos. Thanks for bringing us along

    Great Jon! You did it for us! Thank you so much, but I challenge you to read my dro instructions and even understand anything as it's in Chinglish! You've made me understand the differences between the two styles of measurement. I did (and taught in fact ) Technical drawing to 'A' level standard but absolute measurements were the norm back in the days of laying parts out on the surface table using a vernier height gauge. Long before electronic measurements were even thought of lol
    And yes I would love to see videos on different functions especially the hole circle pattern and SDM.
    Ps the name samrodian is all one word derived from my three Christian names all rolled into one and pronounced as you would if taking to someone. Me lol

I installed a DRO on my mill a few months back, I'm a home/hobby machinist if you could call me that and this helps a lot. I am also wanting to learn the hole pattern function and I imagine different DRO's may use a different way of inputting to get the same results but I'm not sure maybe they all use the same and try to keep it universal.

    with incremental you would need to be realy carefull when zeroing the dro at least if its done the way you shown on the whiteboard
    realy interesting way of showing how it works , havent seen it done that way yet
    even though there are a few explanation videos about the use of the different options on a dro , having a set of these on a single channel would be helpfull
    having the different options explaned (the way you did with the piece of cardboard) in seperate videos would save me some time scrolling through a video explaning everything halfway without showing the drawing with the refferences on the workpiece (that realy helps)
    the most clear explanation ive seen before yours is from blondihacks
