I joined a lean company about a year back... my god it was so refreshing!. Instead of hearing "But that's the way we've always done it" when I'd say something about how a process could be improved. Instead the team leader would go get who was needed to make the improvement happen and MAKE it happen.
Hi Paul. To get rid of the reverb in the conference room put some acoustic foam on the underside of the table. I also do a drop panel hanging from the ceiling above the table and put acoustic foam on top of that. Makes a big difference!
what an inspiration! As a lean practitioner for several years, I know how hard it can be to develop a culture like this, wow. Thanks for sharing, I will definitely watch this again when I need a little motivation.
You motivate me Paul...I was introduced to lean 10 years ago when I was fresh out of the Marines and working at a Toyota factory in long beach..it was love at first sight.. i read everything i could get my hands on about all aspects of lean from "just in time" ,"kanban" "tps" "5S" "the deadly wastes ...the list goes on.....its so inspirational to see someone combine the best of both worlds for me ( Lean and woodworking) ...woodworking is my therapy for dealing with the anxiety and depression from my PTSD...it does what no medication can ever do and takes my mind off all the unwanted memories of combat..it saved my life , so to pay it forward I created a workshop to introduce other veterans to woodworking..I try to apply Lean in every aspect of my life ...I love Fast Cap..Fast Cap looks to improve itsellf on a daily basis ..so the few negative comments about FastCap are just hating ..Fast Cap is at the top of there game ...Great staff as well ....LeAnne and Sandy are so so awesome . Sandy is truly the best she always replies to my emails promptly she is very helpful and professional ...she deserves a raise because she is a very hard worker.. Keep up the amazing work Paul.
Directed this way from an Izzy Swan video...Wow, Everything in this tour is my jam! The organization, the cleanliness, the attention to detail. Thumbs up Paul & Fastcap, very well done.
Amazed by the tolls here making negative comments that have not accomplished anything approaching this themselves. Might listen if they have done something similar...maybe. So I just disregard and chalk it up to jealousy I guess. Nothing wrong with being proud of what you've accomplished. This is not easy to do. Well done and keep it up!
Thank you for this video. I have used this to help others I work with understand the value of Lean and 5S. Some people just don't understand the value add of these programs. I wish you and your employees much success.
Nice...got queezy from aggressive pans and use of selfie stick....Kanban foam for the kitchen!...wow!...Love the machine shop tool chest with every tool in foam..I would love that for mine.
reminds be of the old Batman TV show, in the Batcave and Batmobile everything was labeled. Very impressive I didnt realize you are in WA state. I got my first order in one business day! You people ROCK.
Great video, the way it should be at any high end manufacturing facility. Smart, lean, super clean, safe and fun! before going on my own, I worked at a few places during my engineering, creative design, product development career, where lean environment was a must for efficiency. But nothing gets to that level without a leader that is lean himself or herself. My motto has always been "Nothing is impossible and everything is negotiable withing reason", but without good mental as well as physical health, it is difficult to achieve one's dreams.
Idea: anyone taking a tool must leave an identifier in its location (such as a penny with their initials) so the whole plant does not shut down when a tool goes missing. 👍
A further step would be to have regularly needed tools in the place where they are needed, rather than a central location for tools that then travel to other locations. The money spent on having extra tools is easily recovered by the time saved in motion.
Always an inspiration for the north American manufacturing industry. Of course, there might be some errors now and then but nowhere else will you find an example of a group of people who are always willing to improve and become better. If 10 percent of our industry even aspired to the same level of excellence as FastCap, then we wouldn't need to elect politicians full of empty job promises. Love the chance to visit the factory virtually. Congratulations to Paul and his team.
Thank you PAUL! I really admire all the work you and the employes have done, and keep on doing! You guys have made it, i really envy your culture! KEEP ON THE GREAT WORK!
Excellent facilities! And regardless of what anyone says, yes that is a nice Porche! I like your lean managed plane also. Well done, I'm looking forward to more videos like this.

watched till the end very good presentation of the warehouse, was very impressed with how neat and clean everything is while so much is happening, gonna check it out a
Darn, didn't realize last time I was in Ferndale that I could check out the showroom. Oh well at least I got to geek out by driving through the parking lot. :)
Great job, Paul. Just an idea - if your videos and factory visits are so popular, why don't you setup a training center over there? Paid trainings, paid workshop tours?
You mentioned the machine shop three times but didn’t show it. That’s what I was personally interested in because I work in a machine shop at a Japanese company.
Paul!!!!!!.... Sweet video and excellent job on everything!!! I love it and easily by far the absolute best video on yt!!! Couple things also.... Owner and founder of Fast Cap and still clean the bathrooms!!!! Just absolutely amazing and that is exactly what's needed everywhere in this country!! It's not just the act it's the attitude!!! I can't stress enough how I completely agree with that! Toilets... My only complaint... They might be a bit TOO comfortable... Lol. Meeting room.. No chairs.. What a great idea... Move in have the meeting and move out... Yes!! Anyway I better stop now... But there's so much in this short video to talk about and comment on. Once again just amazing and most of all THANK you for sharing!!
FastCap oh your certainly welcome and keep them coming! Only wish I would of known and been led more down this line of thinking and this type of organization 25 years ago. Great stuff and is much needed!
I have found that we can teach lean to a wide audience. But I also believe that its in a persons personality and genetics as well. Some like Paul just get it in 2 seconds.
Hey Paul, love the video, we use your first tour video as part of our Lean training for all new employees. You briefly showed your dojo for training people on how to do Lean improvements. I would love to see how your dojo works for training, I haven't seen a video on that in the past. Keep up the good work!
Steve We been really busy we will get a video on the dojo soon it might take us a couple more months because we have so many major projects that were undertaking but you will see it it's amazing.
As a student, this video provides some much-needed real life insight into how the theories of lean are applied.. Thank you for that! One question: From a volume-variety perspective, we're taught that manufacturers often benefit from standardizing components (at least from the manufacturer's point of view), as this allows higher production volume and, as such, lower cost price per unit. Of course, a lean, functional layout provides tons of flexibility which is very much a requirement in many markets, but do you have any experience trying to push towards some type of "mass customization"?
Michkel I wish I understood your question but I don't. But I will tell you is that our company is able to respond to Custom requests almost as quickly as our typical orders because we are both flexible and our processes are very well be refined. Generally speaking work is easy for us we don't struggle to do anything so when the custom order comes in one off or a requirement for 10,000 custom pieces our ability to respond is very fluid. Who is the important thing you must understand regardless of what you've been taught in school. Lean makes work easier for the people doing the work that is the only thing you need to focus on. When the work is easy the worker has time to do the job correctly and focus on quality. Work that is easy also allows you to do the work at a lower cost. In the end the customer we are all here to serve with us they get a higher quality product at a lower cost in a more timely fashion. The customers is pleased they return over and over again and the worker has security for the future. Just make your work easy and forget about everything else.
Wow ! Customers and staff are amazing and you must treat both very well as without them the program doesn't work. Also it would be cool too follow an order from start to shipping.
Steve Good idea pretty simple to do the orders get typed up the office they go about 10 steps to the shipping department someone pulls the order walks down the grocery aisle picks the item rolled it in the cart to the shipping table and it's out the door generally well under one hour. First two hours of the day we have a large team of people building the product for the day in the build cells and then we start pulling orders.
ollie yes we do your call the screw gun mags and their beautifully designed search magnets on our website and you will find our entire lineup they're all amazing
hello there, love the tool drawer layouts, i have a similar setup in a briefcase tool kit for engine service work. I allowed for finger clearance which it doesn't look like you did. maybe something you could do on your next design. keep up the informative videos.
I find many brilliant products, so happy that this is available and can see the success it is inspiring while the perfectly clean super-efficient model is not for everyone I think its obviously a great place also I assume the guy has a sense of how he is and may even be trying to be funny
Good to see you paul since we last spoke to each other the company that I was working for has stopped manufacturing in Adelaide I truly believe that if the company had used some or all of your lean improvement ideas I may still be employed but alas it was not meant to be I hope life is treating you well paul
If I may ask, what type and where do you get half wall of metal, and is rail and corners prefab or made? Noticed on ceiling as well, nice touch Paul.. Also, time to buzz cut the hair and go lean!
Matt the metal was purchased by our contractor who built the building it's pretty readily available it's nothing too special. Roofing supplier who sells metal roofing should have it. Can't cut my hair it's an honor of Donald Trump I don't think I'll ever get it quite as long as him but I'm driving:)
Standing up for 8 hours = after some time (Pain in the back, legs ...etc) Nothing is good if you do it a lot .. You have to be able to sit, stand ..etc. This is my opinion .. I worked in a warehouse, 8 hours picking stuff .. I got pain in all my joints only after 1 year!! I wish to know what your people say about that. thanks.
Not as good as the original but interesting all the same. I give you credit for limiting the number of visits. Lots of companies are eager to engage in "industrial tourism" but not lots of companies are willing to do the work to get where FastCap is. To anyone who might view this video and think, "Wow! I'd like to visit that operation to learn more!"...forget it. You learn all you need to know from this and the other FastCap videos. You just need to get to work. It ain't rocket science...but if it was easy, everybody would already be doing it.
All those guys along with thousands of other companies all over the world are doing unbelievable. The transformation that is happening with companies as a result of learning 2 second lien is breathtaking.
OCD about cleanliness? LOL... The "the mistake board", haha. You got me at the 'Grateful Box", almost pissed myself. Reaching for a very "high level" for a tour. I do like your Kaizan Foam, I will put in a large order for that great product. YOU SIR, make me laugh out loudly....in a good way. Cheers!
How does your sandbox concept works? I could see they were standing in some type of formation. Second how are ppl productive after 6-7 hours of standing?
My 2 Second Lean book has been translated into many languages mostly because folks have volunteered to do that. All the electronic versions of all my books are available online for free. paulakers.net/books If you know of anyone who wants to create subtitles in other languages for some of my videos, have them send them to lori@fastcap.com. Thanks Joey!
The make and model is: CMA DISHMACHINES UC60E. Nope, I don't have it at home, but I do have two at home so we load the second when the first is washing.
Lance The only reason I don't have it at home is because it requires 220 power and I don't have that available at my house if I did I would switch it out it's a incredible dishwasher
I admire you, Paul, and your people. You inspire me for when I start a company to start with Lean ideals. For a person finishing my bachelor's degree in operations management soon to be in my masters degree in leadership, I wonder if you could spare some wisdom. Do you in your facility use lean six sigma or strictly lean. My thoughts were to make lean simple with gaining a bronze lean certificate instead of gaining the white and yellow belt with lean six sigma. What r your thoughts?
Lean taken to the extreme can reduce productivity and increase cost. This is where common sense and a balanced analysis of "cost of opportunity" can actually be more productive than the "extreme" lean examples. Time spent cleaning, arranging and rearranging by the mold injection engineer or wood processing instead of order fulfillment and use of the machine.
Mihai That's why we are in 40 countries with 3000 distributors around the world and we ship all of our orders within two hours because were very unproductive
Hello and thank you for your response. You missed my point, was not expecting a passive aggressive response :)) to try and reiterate my point, perhaps if you find the right balance you can make it to 50 countries and 6000 distribuitors.
This video, and responses by fastcap such as this one have really changed my opinion of this company. I really liked them and their products - I'm starting to wonder whether this is a company that I want to support.
I'm sorry. I'm passionate about Lean and sometimes it gets the better of me. I really do not think we are anywhere near taking Lean to the extreme. Nor do I know of any company that is.
@FastCap this is certainly impressive in every single area seen here. Something tells me you are equally organized within your procedures & organization within the computers. Like many, our business is virtual/remote and we could really use some tips for such areas. Would you be willing to give a quick look at those?
Totally. I would hate to work at a place where everything is simple and easy to find, everybody takes responsibility, and has fun doing real, meaningful work.
Mistakes are an opportunity to learn and improve. Firing people who make mistakes is a mistake. On the other hand, hiring people who make fun of our culture would be a mistake!
I think visualization is perfect, but I see there is overstock on the warehouse (WIP, finish good), there are over hand tools in every work cells. It would be better if you show some internal lean process and some kpi or ppi as turnover, capacity, oee, profit per emp, lead time, tact time. Where is a goal, where is an increasing sales, volume, efficiently? If it is as visualization for visualization there is not lean. I'm sure this building may be decrirse twise. Every one works standing up, but CEO has a chair.))
We have an amazing safety record we don’t apply safety in a ridiculous fashion. we wear safety glasses when it’s appropriate and there is obvious safety condition. 80% of all Toyota factory workers do not wear safety glasses.
I understand the concept of working standing up for better efficiency all the time, but after 4 or 7 hours standing people do not complain, how have they adopted it?
How about offering rubber floor mats, to improve the ergonomics of standing for a prolonged time on hard concrete? It is standard in Germany since, uh, 40-50years or so. Kind regards, Gereon
Hi Paul, do you have any companies that sell your products in the UK? I have bought a few FastCap things and i have to buy in from the US. Thanks. Barry (ENG)
Please note that FastCap staff always have been and always will be able to sit if they want! No need to comment on this!
hahaha

Thank you for the virtual tour and your books on Lean. We are starting to implement this way into our business.
I have watched this several times now, and each time it's more inspirational! Thanks for sharing Paul!
Terry My pleasure thank you for the encouragement!

Thank you. You are too kind!
Just wow. Cool place to work. Very different from factories I worked in years ago.
Thanks Richard!

Thanks so much, Andreas!
Excellent Tour Paul. Short, to the point, full of insights .... Brilliant !!
Thanks so much Joe!
Its pretty easy to see why this guy is so successful! Inspiring!
Thanks so much, Jason.
Superb, wow, every company needs that. Have to get every employee onto the bandwagon, or get an employee that's willing otherwise forget it.
Man that Grateful box is a great concept
Excellent facilities! And regardless of what anyone says, yes that is a nice Porche! I like your lean managed plane also. Well done, I'm looking forward to more videos like this.

@@reddawgrup1779 Help us spread the word to others! And start making your before/after Lean improvement videos!
FastCap I certainly am spreading the word and the actions. Videos I'm not the best at, will need to look further into that aspect.
@@reddawgrup1779 They don't have to be perfect (as you can see from ours). And you do get better the more you make.
Amazing Paul, will see you in 10 years..........

How does your sandbox concept works? I could see they were standing in some type of formation.
Second how are ppl productive after 6-7 hours of standing?
Please watch our morning meeting videos in the explains everything. th-cam.com/video/axf3AbHSObg/w-d-xo.html
That's some cool stuff Paul Akers 👍👍
Thanks!
Any plan to have subtitle options in other languages for your videos?
My 2 Second Lean book has been translated into many languages mostly because folks have volunteered to do that. All the electronic versions of all my books are available online for free. paulakers.net/books If you know of anyone who wants to create subtitles in other languages for some of my videos, have them send them to lori@fastcap.com. Thanks Joey!
Hey Paul! Love all your videos and teachings! But I must know! What kind of dishwasher is that??? :) Do you have the same one at home?
Thanks!!

@ jc07141990 Doolock. I forwarded this to Paul and I will hopefully have a response to you within the next few days.
@@FastCapLLC 4 months later, doesn't look great!
Whats the quickest way to make a company lean? Get everyone to think of an idea each?
For the leader to lead by example. Have you read my book, 2 Second Lean? It is available online for free. paulakers.net/books
Fastcap is awesome
Thank you so much!!
@FastCap this is certainly impressive in every single area seen here. Something tells me you are equally organized within your procedures & organization within the computers. Like many, our business is virtual/remote and we could really use some tips for such areas. Would you be willing to give a quick look at those?
We use many tools to keep us organized. I share office videos every so often. Look in the Paul Akers Channel. Recently I shared two Kanban videos.
I’d never wanna work here although it is impressive
Totally. I would hate to work at a place where everything is simple and easy to find, everybody takes responsibility, and has fun doing real, meaningful work.
@@justincabral1150 Haha, great comment! ))))
one of the vacuum hoses in compressor room wasn't put away the same as the other... surely someone got fired
Mistakes are an opportunity to learn and improve. Firing people who make mistakes is a mistake. On the other hand, hiring people who make fun of our culture would be a mistake!
@@FastCapLLC was the hose not placed the same an actual mistake? Surely we are both missing the implied humour and will only improve.
This a sickens..I LOVE IT
I think visualization is perfect, but I see there is overstock on the warehouse (WIP, finish good), there are over hand tools in every work cells.
Lean is a continuous process of improving. Also, we all have access to the same chairs. Paul has no desk chair...he has a stand-up desk.
We are very very bad and we know it we’re at the bottom of the barrel working our way up
He has a point in metrics visualization issue, visual factory then next step visual management.
He literally showed you his desk and it didn't have a chair. 🤭
I am wondering why Paul didn't wear safety glass while he is travelling on the shop floor and record this video ?
We have an amazing safety record we don’t apply safety in a ridiculous fashion. we wear safety glasses when it’s appropriate and there is obvious safety condition. 80% of all Toyota factory workers do not wear safety glasses.
I understand the concept of working standing up for better efficiency all the time, but after 4 or 7 hours standing people do not complain, how have they adopted it?
No complaints. Folks can ask for a chair if they want one. Also we have chairs at break and in the workout facility upstairs.
How about offering rubber floor mats, to improve the ergonomics of standing for a prolonged time on hard concrete? It is standard in Germany since, uh, 40-50years or so. Kind regards, Gereon

Then how can they scooter around. Wear comfortable shoes is my guess.
@@iamchillydogg Rubber mats right at the workplace, not on the ways.
