I've had my 08 car since 2012. In that time it gained about $15k up to 2018 and has now sunk back to just over what I paid. I think they'll now level off but depreciation is not going to be a major factor. I feel for guys who bought new 488s and have lost $100k in a year, and they look to sink further in the face of the Tributo. 458s and 488s now occupy the same territory, which seems a bit weird!
and the depreciation is rather arbitrary since buyers for such cars are not plentiful, and thus the selling prices can vary widely if the seller wants to quickly move the car.
Man, definitely some great stuff in this video - you didn't just buy a dream car, you DROVE it, and you drove the heck out of it. And you DIY'd the work. That makes such a big difference in what we (we in the general sense) can afford to own for a car. Hope we get to meet someday, you seem like such a down to earth car guy.
When I saw the clip of the oil gushing out, it reminded me of my first oil change on my 2018 Ford Mustang GT. I learned from that day to buy an oil drain pan with a super wide opening.
A. THANK YOU for driving your cars! I freaking love seeing mileage being put on these stallions. B. I hope you are off on the 360's going back up by about a year, I'm hoping they hit a low next year (as I'm shopping them for my "over the hill" birthday) but I agree that the 430 is more and more becoming the tantalizing deal.
I had an 2002 E39 BMW M5 and drove it for 48k miles (starting at ~59k). It was $0.74/mile in total including depreciation. I had a 2013 Mini that I also put 48k miles on (starting at 16k) and it was about $0.59/mile. Both cars were self maintained and driven hard. I now have a 99' BMW M3 and it will probably be $0.40/mile doing the same daily+race car. A long term Toyota or Honda if bought new can be less than $0.40/mile. I also have a 99' Oldsmobile that is about $0.20/mile, with half of that being fuel at $0.10/mile.
Great video and the information you put forward is golden! - the depreciation isn't that bad at all. Given your mileage was slightly high (for this particular car), if it was lower then the car would be worth more thus less depreciation. But you enjoyed it and you're happy at the end. So that's what matters most!
The point is ferrari is such a great car to have.. like ducati, its iconic, head turning, the leather seats material are incredible, the smell, the sound changing from idle to mid and then high.... italian opera...
Well done for driving & using your Ferrari. Too many owners just don’t drive their Ferrari’s enough & that’s when all the problems occur resulting in a very expensive maintenance bill. It is a thoroughbred machine with a highly strung engineered engine & driveline. Precisely not the car to let sit in a garage for any length of time & drive short distances. Besides, it is pointless paying all that money if you’re not driving & enjoying such an exotic piece of machinery.
I am a manual gated guy and those are at a premium for the 360 and I am seeing $30,000 to $40,000 extra for the 430 due to the last years with the gated. I will be selling an extra condo in a few months and then I will have the extra money for either a Ferrari or a Porsche and I am leaning towards the Ferrari. I was going to get a new SUV but I rebuilt my engine and transmission on my 22 year old Toyota 4Runner and I will keep that as my daily driver and I will buy my dream car. The know 360 has the cam issues with the early cars but most should had been fixed by now and of course the belt service but at least the engine does not have to be taken out and the 430 has the exhaust issues I was reading about. I was first looking at the 308’s or the 328’s but after more research the 360’s and the 340’s caught my eye. Thanks for all the good info.
Normal Guy Supercar love your new car too. I also know I will keep an account for maintenance and insurance for each year. I work on my 1967 Triumph TR4A and like you I will learn do my own maintenance with oil changes and filters with the Ferrari motor. I know there are those that say when buying they only want to see records that a authorized mechanic do the work. I don’t care I like working on my car but with this car I will not be doing any engine breakdown or repairing.
I had a 430, paid 175 and sold for 95 to dealer after 7 years. Did not really like the car. Put only about 20 K miles in total. Think it cost me about $10/mile. I would stay away from the 430. Reliability improved with the 458.
At least you enjoyed it my 2016 Z06 was bought new i have about 18000 miles on it I didn't know you could get a used Ferrari for that price I'm sure it's more enjoyable than a corvette
That sounds like a great experience .. I’m buying my first Ferrari finally and I’m not really concerned about depreciation but I’m taking into consideration the maintenance. I passed on a Mclaren due to people kept warning me about mechanical issues .
At how many km they strongly recommend to take the engine out , clean it and put it back ?,this is really a must or just recommendation from Ferrari, also if you have a second hand one ? im buying a 812 superfast, but I need to know a bit before what I'm getting myself into. :)
I love the look and idea of the ferrari brand. there is No way I would ever own one. Just too much maintenance over the time of ownership. thank you for this honest review
Normal Guy Supercar I have not heard about any Ferrari that is cheap to own. Please don’t misunderstand I have loved this brand since I was 16 years old but now that I am older I just cannot justify putting that kind of money into any car that cost that much to maintain. Not judging or being critical to anyone’s choice, just my view.
Thanks for all your videos. Very straight forward info. I've had a lot of older Chevelles and muscle cars but am going to jump into the Ferrari world soon. Probably the 430.
Good job on cost breakdown. Im planning to get a ferrari california and im hoping its cheaper than 36k for 3 years. Thank you for inspiring me to keep dreaming of getting my own ferrari!
Good review on cost ownership breakdown, you left out fuel cost. I ran some numbers when I bought my 2006' Maserati Gransport coupe, has the same, but a detuned F136 V8 and F1 6 sp drivetrain. I"m a little over a year with ownership, I figure x 3 in cost increase across the board when I step up to a F430 someday. For me the biggest hit will be the upfront purchase price and the higher insurance, I'd like to finance more the half at 3 yrs to keep the loan interest low. You're correct, doing your own work saves a bundle, I'm the same way, I've yet to visit a Ferrari/Maserati dealership.
I'd rent a supercar for the weekend honestly. Its not a cheap route either believe me, but I couldnt keep up with the maintenance responsibility of one of these if I purchased one
I am about to see a silver 430 that I just won the bid for on BAT but did not make the reserve. Carbon ceramic breaks convertible 18000 mile 2007. Looks like a good example, the Ferrari shop gave the thumbs up but not inspected there yet. Local boutique car shop has it. They want 106,000 min. So confused on prices. Looks like prices are still slowly creeping down... what do u all think? Wait till next spring or stick to 91,500 + 5000 BAT commission after local Ferrari check or somewhere higher = assume its a nice example.
As milage go up, only maintenance goes up. The other costs stay the same (insurance, interest) I think if you drove the F430 more (like me) the costs /mile will drop. I do not maintenance on the car my self, drive it a lot more (10k/year) and my overall costs are €1,20/mile. In short; drive your car more, enjoy it more, it will cost less!
I wouldn't count interest cost, as many owners pay cash. You also shouldn't count mods, since that is your choice. I firmly believe that if you own an exotic, you should plan to do as much of the maintenance as possible, to keep it affordable. I owned an 85" 308gts for 5 years and after all maintenance, I still made money. My insurance was much cheaper, due to multi-car discount etc. and I paid cash for the car. You didn't do badly for such a great car.
Appreciate you honesty in the cost. It's cool to show that it's not out of a normal guy's league to own an exotic. I have two kids right now, so I'm sidelined for another 6-7 years with colleges, oh well that was my path.
I have two kids as well and drive a Lotus (toyota engine). It has barely cost me anything to own because of reliability and still have an "affordable" exotic! I also have two other normal cars for the daily shop/commute.
My budget is around 160k and I’m having a hard time to choose between these three cars . Used Ferrari California T, brand new Audi R8 or, 911. Any suggestions? my dream car is to own a Ferrari. Currently I have a Porsche Cayenne and a new RAM Rebel .
Surprised you didn’t get burnt on resale by not having dealer / specialist stamps in the service history. Thanks for the video, I plan to buy one so it helped as wasn’t sure how much of a money pit it would be vs. my 911s!
Normal Guy Supercar I think it might be a UK thing - if the car doesn’t go back to the dealer people think it hasn’t been maintained properly! I’d much have a car that has been looked after by an enthusiast like yourself than something where some random person in a dealership stamps a book to say the work has been done
Yeah, you could buy any brand new $100K ICE luxury car and probably incur the same or more $36k cost across depreciation, financing and insurance (and probably minimal maintenance). But then you’re driving a Ferrari! Good choice IMO. The only cheaper alternative for a $100K luxury car is possibly a Tesla (or other top EV) based on the depreciation curves I’ve seen. That said, you know what I’d pick (I’m a 911tt owner but am a tifosi at heart).
That's amazing that you did all the work yourself. Did that hinder you when you sold it? Aka no dealer invoices for services? Did buyers knock you for that, the no factory service records?
I considered a used Ferrari California with 17k miles before I bought a lexus LC 500. The used Ferrari and the new Lexus cost the same. The Ferrari was very nice and certainly a head turner. But the Lexus is as well because of its rarity and beauty. I'm not good with a wrench and don't really want to spend time working on a car. Not my thing. Cost of ownership is really a relative thing to your enjoyment. While I would have liked the speed of the California and that drop top, in the end, for me the enjoyment would have ended with the maintenance costs and that was the deciding factor for me. However, I'll never be critical of anyone that makes the opposite choice of mine because if it gives you joy and you can afford it, just do it. Thinking back on it, had I not had a fast motorcycle, I may have gone with the Ferrari. But once you own a fast motorcycle, all cars, even Ferrari's seem slow.
Thanks for the cost breakdown! Very helpful. At double the cost if you hadn't done your own maintenance, that's nuts, $72k for 3 years, wasn't that much fun. You should do a video on the effect of Ferrari ownership on marriage, get your wife's point of view and input. I remember the early video you did with your wife. Forget the cost of ownership, what's the cost on the relationship?! That's the biggest hurdle for most considering buying a super car, how do you get your spouse's support? If you plan on selling your Ferrari, in my opinion, it's better to keep the professional maintenance for documentation and not do it yourself. That's a big red flag for me if someone is doing their own maintenance. Part of what you're selling is the documentation. If you buy a Ferrari and intend to own it forever, then by all means do all maintenance that you can yourself.
Great video! For the amount you drove, those costs are not bad at all! The 550 was getting crazy expensive and I wasn’t even driving it that much! You are right about the 430 market, the time is now!
If you’ve got the money, for sure its worth it. If you’ve bought the car hoping tp pay just finance fees, principal, and insurance as most people, you’re not happy !
I guess my 16.5k initial repair expense wasn't even remotely bad lol as I didn't even DIY any of it. Thanks for that excel sheet you have Dan...it was useful.
@@normalguysupercar now I'm working on fixing cosmetic issues paint/dash and then exhaust...i'll see if I catch up to your costs haha hopefully I won't!
That's honestly not bad! Thank God it wasn't a more complex drivetrain. I agree , totally worth it. I do have a question though, how did you insurance go up with time? One would think it would go down with a clean driving record
@@normalguysupercar ahh ok.. makes sense everything went up in recent times haha. Congrats on the new 458 stunning car. I recently rented a California (i know it's nowhere near a rear engine mounted Ferrari) but I was in love! There is just something about these Italian race breed machines
Oh man. I made just a little bit more on my NA1 96 Nsx. Owned it for just almost 11 yrs. Bought it for only 34k at the time and it only had 72k miles on it. By the time I let it go I sold it for 43k and it 125k miles on it. I don't know if it was the right decision, but wifey said let go and so I did. I missed it so much!
Normal Guy Supercar Funny thing now is that I focused more on my reef tank. Btw, I saw your other channel you're doing reef tank as well. Wow! What a common interests we have. Cheers bud!
Did you do the major and if so how did you learn how? I'm very good with tools but every car is different. Rebuilt my 328 years ago so I know a little about Ferrari Thanks
How much time did all of this take? For most people who can afford a supercar, money is just numbers, time is everything. Cars can be a huge time drain.
Interesting numbers , i kept books on all my cars, when i had a E220 W124 (23 year old, 330.ooo km, needing a lot of stuff done) vs. Honda CR-V 2005 model (which are pretty much bullet proof, they barely need maintenance), but after adding all the costs i found that the Mercedes costs about the same as the Honda in ownership, one would depreciate and the other would need maintenance but very close costs when you factor them in. Your F430 seems to have been reasonable, given what it is. That exhaust managed to be a very large expense in the total cost.
Forgot to mention the cost, it´s 3000-4000$ US per year (excluding fuel), per each car. At the time i was renting out the Honda for tourists so they did a lot more miles than normally, so they cost slightly less these days to run, my lovely E-class got crashed, but i´ll have another one in the future.
Yeah the big thing with Ferrari's is buying used and getting ones that have already taken the biggest depreciation hits. Then it really works out fairly well.
F1 exhaust note. The Ferrari 348 is the single Biggest Bang for the Buck in Ferrari and exotic sports cars. Wait till you have an electrical gremlin with the 296. In Ferrari sports cars. Jeremy Clarkson declared the 355 “the greatest car in the world, ever.” But Less is More with the completely analog 348 as it doesn’t have the brass valve guide and/or electronic suspension issues the 355 has. Older is Easier as the 348 is the best “purely analog” Ferrari ever made according to Hoovies Garage, the Smoking Tire, Jay Emm, etc as the 348 comes without modern day features that actually detract from the experience of driving a Ferrari. Why drive a “fast” car “slow” when you can drive a slower car fast? Lastly, the 348’s 8,500 rpm flat plane crank shaft generates an Formula 1 exhaust note as F1 cars also use flat plane cranks to lower their center of gravity.
There is another version, that you dont change spark, exhaust, only oil you ll prob get by 20,000miles of ownership in which you save even more.. but the risk is if things break but those items are not fatal to the car or engine. I would do the trans oil without the filter amd leave the problems to the next owner, 20,000miles cheaper get by still.possible but you ll loose tiny performace joy which is hard to pick up...
Fuel costs? Why not mention that as a figure as cost per mile and per year like the other costs? Unless it was included in with one of those other figures.
Patrick94GSR probably close to $6,500...mileage would be around 12 to 13 mpg conservatively with premium gas around $4 per gallon (depending on locations). So about $2100 per year, my Camry costs about $1,800 so not nearly as bad as I would’ve thought.
My used 2009 Lexus LS460 (prurchased 2019) cost $14,000. Driven four years at 12k/year. Maintenance cost of 5 oil changes and air filters $240. Oh, set of brakes all around $50. Peace of mind…priceless.
$14,000 depreciation in 3 years for an exotic is not bad at all.
it was already between 8-12 years old when he got it, if he had brough it brand new, he'd be looking at a depreciation of 100k
Given I put 20k+ miles on it! :)
I've had my 08 car since 2012. In that time it gained about $15k up to 2018 and has now sunk back to just over what I paid. A tip for everyone. The sweet spot for these type of cars is to get them after they are a year or two old and then keep for as long as possible.

The R8 will turn the most heads and will be reliable.
Surprised you didn’t get burnt on resale by not having dealer / specialist stamps in the service history. Thanks for the video, I plan to buy one so it helped as wasn’t sure how much of a money pit it would be vs. my 911s!
I don't think that matters as much on the cars that don't need engine outs
They are a passion, it's not always about the economics. :)
That's amazing that you did all the work yourself.
Did that hinder you when you sold it?
Aka no dealer invoices for services?
Did buyers knock you for that, the no factory service records?
Not as much as you'd think but probably a little bit.
thank you for response ,
Any time
I considered a used Ferrari California with 17k miles before I bought a lexus LC 500.
True. It's all about making the right decision for you. No wrong answer
And how much petrol did it take in those years/mileage?
A lot
@@normalguysupercar how much did it eat? 15-20 liters / 100km?
Question do you get angry when you see how much profit you would have made, if you held on to it for an extra year or 2?
No.
Is the insurance $1,800 a year or $1,800 a month?
That's a great video idea
Was the $1800 for insurance your monthly premium or 6 month premium?
6 month
@@normalguysupercar Wow that's actually not bad. Thank you for reply!
I’m thinking about to buy a 2007 f430 convertible any advice?
I don't give out buying advice for free
@@normalguysupercar
Keep your video and keep your advise
Great video topic. Great job.
Thanks! :)
How much was gas per mile?
Great video! For the amount you drove, those costs are not bad at all! The 550 was getting crazy expensive and I wasn’t even driving it that much! You are right about the 430 market, the time is now!
Yuuup! 430s are too cheap. That's a lot of car for the money.
If you’ve got the money, for sure its worth it. If you’ve bought the car hoping tp pay just finance fees, principal, and insurance as most people, you’re not happy !
Ok
I guess my 16.5k initial repair expense wasn't even remotely bad lol as I didn't even DIY any of it. Thanks for that excel sheet you have Dan...it was useful.
Glad to be of service. :)
@@normalguysupercar now I'm working on fixing cosmetic issues paint/dash and then exhaust...i'll see if I catch up to your costs haha hopefully I won't!
Lol it's not hard to get there unfortunately.
Thanks for all your honesty and openness for costs for owning a Ferrari! Cool car!
Thanks for showing the real cost of a supercar. Found your channel from TheStradMan
Thanks!
That's honestly not bad! Thank God it wasn't a more complex drivetrain. I agree , totally worth it. I do have a question though, how did you insurance go up with time? One would think it would go down with a clean driving record
I think insurance in general just went.
@@normalguysupercar ahh ok.. makes sense everything went up in recent times haha. Congrats on the new 458 stunning car. I recently rented a California (i know it's nowhere near a rear engine mounted Ferrari) but I was in love! There is just something about these Italian race breed machines
Have you considered building a wrecked one, or is that not really up your alley?
Ironically I have a video coming out Monday discussing this exact topic
I’ll settle for more on that Testarossa
Haha! This guy is awesome! Thanks for breaking it all down! Always wondered what were the costs!
You're welcome
Thanks!
Those are great cars

Funny thing now is that I focused more on my reef tank. Btw, I saw your other channel you're doing reef tank as well. Wow! What a common interests we have. Cheers bud!
Did you do the major and if so how did you learn how? I'm very good with tools but every car is different. Rebuilt my 328 years ago so I know a little about Ferrari
Thanks
The major in a 430 is just changing fluids and stuff like that. It isn't a timing belt service.
If you weren’t able to do the work yourself then how much would the cost be? Not affordable then for a regular guy.
How much time did all of this take? For most people who can afford a supercar, money is just numbers, time is everything. Cars can be a huge time drain.
The labor certainly takes time
Who did you go through on your loan? I was told 25% down minimum. I’m looking to buy now. Thank you in advance.
Thank you For making me feel good bought a 360 for 75k sold it for 118k and broke even
360 is worth like 40k
How does a person get sponsorships for a supercar?
Spend years making a moderately successful TH-cam channel? Lol
Love love
Thanks
Thanks for the video! Should you have included taxes/registration in that calculation or were they not significant enough?
Tax was, registration is like $76/year
@@normalguysupercar Thanks!
Youre the man! Thanks for breaking it down. Please do the same for 458 after 1 year ownership.
Absolutely!
You should take your Ferrari to the Gumball 3000 Rally !
That's a lot of money
What’s better the 458 or 430 ? I heard there’s pros and cons to each one
I actually did a video on this... th-cam.com/video/WWmKx1zGVAA/w-d-xo.html
You know, the maintenance isn’t that bad given the type of car this is. It’s actually very doable for someone that is good with their money
Yup
Eh I'd rather have the 355 than the 348 but that's just me
There is another version, that you dont change spark, exhaust, only oil you ll prob get by 20,000miles of ownership in which you save even more.. but the risk is if things break but those items are not fatal to the car or engine.
I would do the trans oil without the filter amd leave the problems to the next owner, 20,000miles cheaper get by still.possible but you ll loose tiny performace joy which is hard to pick up...
I suppose so but it's a significant risk
Fuel costs? Why not mention that as a figure as cost per mile and per year like the other costs? Unless it was included in with one of those other figures.
I didn't record fuel costs
Patrick94GSR probably close to $6,500...mileage would be around 12 to 13 mpg conservatively with premium gas around $4 per gallon (depending on locations). So about $2100 per year, my Camry costs about $1,800 so not nearly as bad as I would’ve thought.
@@joeyjoe-joejr.shabadoo9448 yeah the gas costs whatever they are shouldn't be too insane because I'm not driving it as much as a typical car.
Do you know why your insurance went up so much? Did you crash any other car ?
No it was for only a few months the first year
Good job
Thanks
The real question is, was any maintenance done at the dealer?
Never
Can you upload updated document with the costs as last time??
I'll see if I have time
My used 2009 Lexus LS460 (prurchased 2019) cost $14,000. Driven four years at 12k/year. Maintenance cost of 5 oil changes and air filters $240. Oh, set of brakes all around $50. Peace of mind…priceless.
It's also boring but hey if you like it that's what matters
Interesting observation on your call Sonia Ferrari but you did not mention the gas had to put into the car how much that cost you never mentioned that
430 already came with BBK front and back and full KW coil overs
Yup
Your the bomb Dave. Looking at the 458 ..after I sell my 360. What do you think.
I think the 458 is a much better car
i think it is pointless to compare to a regular car, since after 3 yrs the regular call still retains plenty of value, But whatever, superb car.
Should you have included $$$ spent on gas? 🤔 Thx for sharing.
What year is that?
2005
