    Nice vince.
    Couple of months ago I picked up a wii at a flee market with power and sensor only for $15. It had a rattle.
    Took it home, disassembled it before plugging it in because something was loose in it. And it turned out to be .11 cents and dime and a penny lol.
    Everything looked pretty clean so plugged it in and it worked with no issues. So now I own 2 wii consoles.

  • @fouzaialaa7962
    @fouzaialaa7962 6 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    the mod ship is a 12f683 microcontroller made by microchip and used commonly in consoles like the wii U PS1 and PS2
    it basically tricks the console into thinking the cd inside is genuine
    usually consoles have at the beginning of every game "special code" or signature that you cannot copy from original games or if you copy that code from the original cd to a blank cd it will get it wrong !!!
    that microcontroller mimics that bit of "code " or signature and injects it directly to the data lines from the drive to the cpu the result is the cpu receives "genuine " signature from the drive, witch in reality put by the chip ,assumes its the real thing and decides to play the game !!
    at 53:50 tooth can see the missing tooth on the second pin in the big plastic rail !!! if youve just seen it you could've just glued it back in place or maybe that's what's jamming it

      This is what is does:
      Automatic detection of the region, for the regionfree fix (the first time an working Wii game is used)
      Run gamecube originals
      Run gamecube backups
      Partial regionfree support for gamecube games (originals and backups)
      Run Wii originals
      Run Wii backups
      Partial regionfree support for Wii games (backups only) (must be patched to same region as Wii)
      Support for DMS, D2A and D2B!!
      configurable Speedfix
      Support for alle media: DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW
      Configuration DVD for setting up your region
      Support for 12F629, 12F675 and 12F683 chips (the installation for the 12F683 is the same as the 12F629)

      For the Wii, drive chips are also REALLY old hacks. Like, well at the start of the life. About 12 months in, we got Twilight Princess savegame hack, IOS hacks, and then piracy over USB mass storage / SD card. Didn't think there'd still be a Wii with one of these in existence...

    • @estrikadev9554
      @estrikadev9554 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that chip have the code of the wiikey chip i made many installations in the past using a 20 cents pic programming wiikey code in it and installing in wii, i cannot see the dvd drive version in you video. but for what i see must be the version (dont remember anymore the name) where you need to make hole in the dvd chip itself to solder the wires.

  • @Ohem1
    @Ohem1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    If anything it's possible the modchip is meant to help ripping the disc to an external drive, the Wii can even with 4.3 firmware still be softmodded with a SD-card and an external HDD. From what can be seen it's also Gamecube compatible, so it's basically "2-in1" console.

  • @doslover
    @doslover 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It's not the scratches on the shiny side that are the problem with Mario Kart. You can see that there are huge gashes on the label side, which surely killed any chance of that disc ever working again.
    Interesting mod to get the drive working though. Gotta love that ingenuity.

  • @JohnSmith-nj4zq
    @JohnSmith-nj4zq 6 ปีที่แล้ว +170

    Vince should have used his brain instead of his muscles to get those discs out. He broke the Wii and the Mario Kart disc. Just watching him trying to force the discs out while the wii is crying "STOPPPPP!!!!" is pretty sad. You can hear the gears breaking. He was going to open it up to clean it anyways, but he wanted to be lazy and instead made it more work for him at the end.

    • @MasterYoshidino
      @MasterYoshidino 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yep. He probably did it for the long play time but instead of it being a 10 minute video of removing the face plate it got dragged out with the broken gear problem.

    • @arnudo
      @arnudo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Actually he said there were pliers marks on the discs so the previous owners obviously tried as well and probably broke it before him hopefully

    • @Randomsae
      @Randomsae 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I’m all for criticism, but there’s a difference between criticizing a person’s actions and assuming you know why they did those actions. He clearly has no idea what he’s doing, as he constantly says. My bet is that he just wasn’t thinking, but what do I know. He may have done it on purpose, but I think there’s a far bette explanation. Long videos don’t get as much play time anyways, so to purposefully drag out a video for this long would more than likely lose people’s attention than anything else.

    I don't know if initially if he was more interested in the disc than the console he constantly kept saying how valuable the Mario Kart disc would be. When you hear the mechanism crunching you should immediately pull the power plug out. You probably could have saved the machine and yourself a lot of time just taking it apart in the first place. If you really don't know what you're doing it's always best to take it apart so you can see what's going on

  • @worldsupermedia7509

    Not only is Mario Kart Wii a good game, but despite the circumstances of Nintendo's servers for the Wii getting shut down and the game being 10 years old on a relatively underpowered console, Mario Kart Wii still has a very strong community (all you need is so basic homebrew knowledge). I can see why it would be expensive

    The mod-chip on the disk drive might be a region-free chip. Granted, there's really no reason why you need a mod-chip now, considering it is so easy to softmod a Wii. Also, I love your workaround for disc drive at the end. If you have access to a 3D printer, you should be able to recreate the broken gear. If I lived in the UK, I would totally be willing to make and ship one, however shipping from the US is going to be ridiculous considering Wii disc drives aren't that much.

    That MarioKart disk is damaged on the data side. The label side of the disk was scratched, which is the side that holds all the data. The silver side of the disk (where it reads the data) can be scratched badly and back and still run since the plastic there is fairly thick.

    I've done impressions of smaller things like gears into and used baking soda (not powder)/super glue mix to effectively pour/cast pretty good copies (usually requiring some cleanup around edges, and drilling out the center hole, tho, but not a huge deal). Otherwise I second finding a local makerspace that either has a similar gear or could print one for you. Aligning yourself with such a place could be a great source of additional information and expertise as well as oddball parts. :)

    You could soft mod the wii to play backups on it. Then you wouldn't need the drive. Ideally, just soft mod it then attach an external hdd to it and play backups and also install emulators and even a media player. You just use the faulty drive to copy the disk to hdd. Give it a go, you'll be surprised how easy it is.

It was my wife’s but it didn’t know it had quite working and I’m getting a signal but the screen is fuzzy. I bought it for my wife, but unfortunately she passed away in August of 2020. But I want to restore it myself and keep it either way.

    Vince you could try measuring the gear, and making a 3D model of it. After that you can send it to some 3d printing company, or a pal of yours who has a 3D printer. That would be the cheapest way to fix it. You could also buy a 3D printer yourself.

    you actually can buy spare gears but if i count right... this amount of tooth are not very common... 11 to 27 not sure about the dimensions ... just stop trying to fix the broken... maybe its easier to make a copy of the good one. make a negative fill it with the UV-glue and let it harden unter the sun... it may work...

    you can mod wii's really, really easily, so even if the drive is nadgered, you've still got yourself a very neat little toy if you check out homebrew, not to mention you can play backups if you spend a little bit of time getting it working. If it's all down to that one gear, you should be able to get somebody to 3d print it anyhow, or replace that gear if you can get a really cheap busted-ass wii from the 'net.

    Disc drives are really interesting... My PS2 is really old.. it's an old fat model where the tray comes out.
    Now when we were moving the PS2 fell and knocked SOMETHING out of place. God knows what. But I had to take it apart and work on it for like two hours to get it to work. Turns out if I want to play the PS2 there needs to be a game in there before hand...

    also, about dvds, any wii can play DVDs using dvdx, mplayer-dvdx or even WiiMC, no need for physical mods to the drive. The only thing you might need a modchip for is playing physical disc backups or out-of-region discs from the system menu directly. (you can read a PAL disc in an NTSC console and back it up using a dedicated dumper or a USB loader, and then play said backup you dumped over USB just fine)

  • @happygames9757

    I think a 3D printer would come in handy here, like you could have print out the gear instead, rather than trying to mess around with the broken one, even though it may be expensive, I think it's worth a buy,

    A tip you could try to fix the broken gear using the dremel is to cut the gears in two. So you seperate the small gear that is attached to the larger gear. That may give your dremel some more room to make those fine cuts and then just super glue the two gears together again.

  • @MickNavarro

    my guess is the cog was already damaged, and the previous owner used a copy to push his games and give the little extra movement in order to allow the tray grabbing the disc

    The top half of the wheel does not go down, it is magnetic and hanging with a spring around its axle, between the wheel and its back plate. When the drive wheel lift up through the CD Center, the hanging wheel magnetizes to the axle of the drive wheel, capping it and helping the CD stay flat while rotating, due to its width and weight, and spring loading behind it...
