Front CV Axle Replacement on the Dodge Ram Truck and Other Damage Report from Last Trip

  • In this video I take a walk around the AutoEdit 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 truck and show some of the damage that happened on the last off road 4x4 adventure trying to climb Miller Jeep trail. If you haven't seen that video, please give it a watch.... it's pretty good!
    If you are here for the axle install only go to 6:58 in the video for that and less jibber jabber out of me.
    After showing all of the new "character" that I added to the truck... we dig in and repair the broken front CV axle that happened on the trail. It's a fairly straight forward repair and I run through the main points of installation.

    Need thread locker on cv axle nut if you’re reusing it..also need a torque wrench on the spindle nut or you’ll be replacing that wheel hub bearing soon

  • @trailrunnah8886
    @trailrunnah8886 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great walkthrough on that, I'm glad you ended up shooting that video. Seems like a relatively simple repair, I bet you're now carrying an extra axle in that truck! I like the suspension setup too, with the coil overs and that uniball upper ball joint. Also the way the splined axle sticks out of the diff, rather than the end of the CV sticking into it.
    Just a tip on getting that axle nut off if you don't have air or any resistance behind it... I had this problem on one of my cars, I took a long prybar and wedged it between the lug studs and the ground, so it could only turn a bit before it wedged itself between the studs and the ground, stopping any further rotation. Reposition the bar for tightening. Excuse me if I'm captain obvious for pointing this out, but it was a headscratcher for me until this idea popped into my mind, haha.

    I love that paint scheme. Hope you did a video on getting that done. That paint job would set my 07 1500 Reg cab off! I'm replacing my CV's this weekend but I'm adding TheRamMan Inc locking hubs at the same time. Should make all those moving parts up front last longer since they all turn 100% of the time. Will help keep the balls in the sack...

    Rust free repairs, so envious!!! it was noted to sand/compound the headlights after that you could check into getting some Xpel or other clear self healing wrap to cover the headlights and protect them long term. As for the push bar, consider powder coating? Honestly, after the breakage of the axle on the trail I would have been surprised if you didn't make a video of the damage inflicted and the repair to the truck. Great video as usual!

    Question: I Got Limted 2012 ram.
    I'm having a problem when I shift into 4x4 the truck start to jitter from the front. When I'm on 2WD IT DRIVES PERFECT only when I shift into 4x4 or low I feel the jitter as I take off into speed. When I'm on the highway the truck runs good. I'm trying to determine if my axel went bad or if my 4x4 differential went bad. I turn the rigth axel clock wise and counter to see if my differential was bad on the right side it turned but on the left side it didn't it felt locked. Those this mean my axel on the left bad or my 4x4 differential bad?

    Love your repairs.....
    I just lifted my truck...and I get an annoying small knocking...yes I’ve checked all nuts and bolts. All torqued. Solid
    I only get it when coasting in a parking lot with small bumps or potholes.
    I’ve checked everything. Took it to two shops...they thinks it’s my coilovers from fox....
    But when I get under the truck...the only thing that is sort of loose Is the play in the two drive axles in front.
    I guess I can see if hitting small bumps , this can maybe transmit the knocking and make it seem like more than what it it
    I relate the sound to a broken sway bar link ....but not as long and strong
    So...with your new axles...grabbing them with your hand...can you move it up and down to make a knocking sound...or are the tight and solid?

Since my friend put a 3 or 4 inch lift on the truck and the cv axles are at its limit as far as angle do you know how I can fix this. Unbolted everything on my 2010 ram to pullout the drivers side axle shaft, can not get it loose, to come out of the diff. Pulled on it with ratchet straps, tried pry bars, tried beating it out with a hammer, but there isnt much room to swing the hammer. Any ideas?

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear that. Definitely spray penetrating lube on the splines inside the collar and maybe rent a slide hammer to help pull it loose of the clip ring.

    • @jeremygreiner6854
      @jeremygreiner6854 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      autoedit Thanks I tried PB blaster, but it still didnt budge. I ended up cutting off the CV flange with a 6” wafer wheel on a grinder, and then cutting the half inch thick shaft that goes over the splines into two halves with a dremel with 1” cutoff wheels. Even after i cut it in two halves, I still had to pound them off with a chisel.

      Do you mean the lifter noise for a few seconds after start up? Yes, I have heard of that but fortunately it hasn't been very prominent on this Jeep. I have switched to Lucas oil and run their additive and the engine seems very happy with it for the last 10,000 miles. At least try their oil additive right now and see if that helps.

    Hey, great video! Very informative. Quick question, any time I watch anyone doing any work in the wheel well they just say to put it all back together again, but never really give any torque specs for thing like the axle nut, ball joint, upper strut bolt, etc. Are you finding those torque specs or just tightening till it feels right? Hitting anything without a torque wrench finish always scares me. Thanks!

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes I torque and sometimes I don't. After years of using my calibrated elbow and knowing that I service my vehicles often, I feel comfortable with this. It's always better to torque than not to.

    What brand of Cv shaft are you using? Oem or aftermarket. I have a 2013 ram with 6” lift. Going do a gear swap soon (and swap in a 2010 front diff as the 13s you can’t change gears in) and if there’s a strong then stock version I’d change the shafts out in the process. Can’t find anything online

      I put an OEM replacement back in during this video but ordered two nearly unbreakable shafts from RCV for the rebuild. Those units are guaranteed up to 42 inch tires! They are in the process of making the first set for this truck but call them and tell them I sent you and at least get a price... they are the best in the business. www.rcvperformance.com/

      autoedit 😍😍 really! Yes I know they are best in the business, was on their site never seen anything but I differently will as the smallest tires I say will on this one after I finish the 4.56 gears is a 37 or 38. So that’ll do me well. A full rear locker to replace my rear lsd might be in the works to yet

      There's a "C" clip in a groove on the stub axle. If that is broken or missing could cause that to seem loose.

    Anyone have a good idea for when the old (16 years, 248,000 miles) CV Axle won't come off from the engine-side? It comes out of the hub, but is stuck like the dickens onto the axle/shaft coming out of the front diff. I thought I tried the obvious prybar locations but all it looked like I was doing is denting aluminum parts. Any ideas? Or do I just pay for the problem to go away (i.e. take it to a professional shop)?

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you... had the same problem the very next time I tried to remove this axle. I ended up hitting it with a dead blow hammer and it eventually came out with the intermediate shaft still attached so I had to order a new one of those for an extra $65. I'm just glad it didn't do it on the drivers side. Watch this video th-cam.com/video/cvtI-xU7IME/w-d-xo.html
