Is there anyone else out there who loves comedy, came here after reading people raving about this scene excited to watch it, and left feeling confused. I get the production but I missed the joke. I can't be alone in this... can I? Do certain mbti types like this? Do only older white males? If there any minority out there who finds this funny - please explain the humour. Not the dogs good acting. Thank you

I hold up this scene as a classic, even textbook, lesson in physical comedy. Not once does Niles need to speak, not once is so much as a caption laid out. His every thought is conveyed, his actions all in character, no wackiness is needed. This is, quite literally, a five and a half minute masterclass in physical comedy.

I’m not really a fan of physical comedy - Jim Carrey, even Robin Williams, but….. David Hyde-Pierce…is just brilliant. I can think of so many scenes: the yoga class, the starting pistol, the sword fight, the egg time keeping scene with Elvis Costello and on and on. And that’s not even touching on his other brilliance…his comic timing and delivery,

One of my favorite moments In this scene is when he's reading the lable of the laquor??? Turpentine??? I don't know my cleaning liquids, anyway just that he's reading it by candle light and the moment you can see as his eyes hit the word FLAMMABLE, the perfect movement and reaction, not a single word but you know exactly what happened, even if it's a bit obvious of a gag it's timed perfectly

Very true. It's a little odd to me that I don't watch Cheers reruns but will plan my day around being able to see the Frasier repeats in the evening. I think Cheers became too formulaic and so it's easy to think "oh right and then this and this and this happens", but with Frasier even if it "ran" that same way, it sure didn't look or feel like it. Lucky me, my local broadcast gives me four episodes every weekday evening, plus some on weekends (I haven't figured out the weekend timing yet).

The only reason why i think he never got kicked out was because of him being a celebrity. Maybe they thought that having a famous radio star living in their building would draw people to their place to live there. Cuz they are some people in the show who get star struck by Frasier. Maybe that could be a reason.

This was one of many episodes directed by Frasier himself, Kelsey Grammer, but this might be the finest segment he helmed in the series. I would imagine directing David Hyde Pierce in this scene for him was like putting one of his cherished friends into a fun kind of obstacle course.

Funny you should say that; a woman I knew had a colleague working in the same office who had a very high IQ, and who once accidentally set fire to some pieces of paper she was holding, and had to ask advice on what to do about it.
Had it just been one sheet, I'm sure it would have been burning her fingers before all the possible options had been explained to her.
Having a high IQ doesn't mean that one is either good in a crisis, or have common sense.
I have a relatively high IQ, but am aware that in some ways, I'm pretty dumb. My girlfriend, who has a very high IQ, claims that I'm lacking in common sense, but, in some ways, I disagree, and just think that there are sometimes different ways of doing things, any of which would be acceptable.
One guy who answered a question on Quora, who has a high IQ, gave a detailed run down of his day, and all the ways he had done dumb things, and it was pretty funny, but hey, he can get high scores on some specific sort of test, so that's ok, isn't it?

There are some outstanding bits of physical comedy in other shows but David Hyde-Pierce was at the top of his game doing the stuntman bits without a stuntman. Genius. Can you imagine the fun the writers and Mr. DHP had developing each and every movement to have a meaning and laugh of its very own. Priceless. I also love Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) with the Thanksgiving turkey, the suitcase fight, and the water battle in the bathroom. Ms. Heaton rivals Lucille Ball.
