Bonamassa on the "Dirty Burst!!!" | Shred With Shifty

  • Blues shredder extraordinaire Joe Bonamassa joins Shred With Shifty for an extra-long, Les Paul-powered episode.
    Shifty sits down with Bonamassa for this special episode of Shred With Shifty. No surprise that both of them reach for their Les Pauls, and Bonamassa even reveals why he switched from Strats to Gibsons in the early 2000s.
    Bonamassa is known for his dazzling collection of vintage guitars-which he says has become a target for haters-but he explains that you don’t need a ’58 Les Paul to get the goods. “It’s also the mystique,” he says. “If Jimmy Page played a Tokai, everyone would want a Tokai.” A guitar made two weeks ago, he says, is just as good as a classic.
    Bonamassa’s lightning-quick soloing style, which conjures a hurricane of major and minor pentatonic notes with some phrygian flair, is the stuff of legend, and his tricks on “Blues Deluxe” are plenty. Even though he tries to adhere to a “divide by two” rule to simplify his phrasings, he still stumps Shiflett with a volume swell trick he learned from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton.
    This solo is no walk in the park. Any brave takers up for giving it a shot? Share it and tag us so Shifty can have a look! Most importantly, remember to have fun. “Do whatever you want with the damn thing,” says Bonamassa. “It’s just a guitar.”

      @@stratman9449 The story on this one was awesome, the owners daughter was storing the guitar in her house and needed to know the value to ammend her home insurance, didn't know how much it was worth had typed "Gibson Les Paul" into google thinking around £5k would be enough. Took it to ATB to be sure the value was correct then they told her what it was and what it was worth.

    Hey Mr. Shiflett.... everyone always talks about the feel of a neck(chunky and what not) but it seems like nobody ever talks about fretboard radius. Vintage Fenders were said to be 7.25 radius but most modern fenders are 9.5. Do you and or any of your guests have an opinion about this?

    • @shanealan2995
      @shanealan2995 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not a guest lol, but I did recently pick up a vintage 1976 ESP strat with the 7.25 and it's debunked all of the horrible Internet crap I read about them. There's a little difference but not crazy and if they're set up correctly you can absolutely bend anywhere and not have notes fret out. Sorry for the unwanted response but I laughed when I read this comment because I had been recently hardcore researching all of this prior to picking up the guitar. I'm happy I did.

    • @strato-dave
      @strato-dave 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@shanealan2995 hey that's cool.... I have a 2009 mim strat I got used and it plays like a dream. And I got to looking at why and I checked the fretboard and it seems to be a 7.25. When I did the serial lookup everything matched. So i'm thinking it was maybe just a fluke cause it was supose to be 9.5 from the factory.

    • @ahiwalter9153
      @ahiwalter9153 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      radius really doesn’t matter, Eddie Van Halen did all his wizardry in the early days on 7.25 radius fenders. I prefer the smaller frets & radius myself but yeah it’s not really that relevant, your hands adjust without much thinking

    • @strato-dave
      @strato-dave 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ahiwalter9153
      but the shape of the back of the Neck matters??? because your hand can't adjust to that??? If it didn't matter I doubt that Leo would have gone to all the trouble to put a radius on it and just made it flat.
