Nice score! I got a "free" 1987 S10 when I was 17 back in the early 2000s. Was my cousins truck, someone stole the wheels off it while it was in the parking lot at the movie theater. He's not exactly the brightest peanut in the turd so he just left the truck sitting there for several weeks, obviously management wasn't too thrilled about it and the cops eventually showed up at his mom's house asking questions since it was in her name. She signed the title over to me, I paid the $35 or whatever it was back then to transfer it over. Luckily I lived next door to a very sweet old lady who was basically my grandma, she let me put her Oldsmobile bravada on jackstands for an afternoon so I could borrow her wheels to drive my new shitbox home.
Please please please give this thing some love and TLC that it badly needs. Awesome truck, legitimately upset to see it sitting for as long as it was. I love this era of truck.
I remember when these came out and to see 21 years of lost time represented through a truck I remember being new like it was yesterday, kinda got to me. Where is time going? I owned the far less known Isuzu Hombre for 11 years and I freaking miss that truck everyday.
I use to have a S10 Extreme, black, single cab, 4.3 V6 with a manual transmission, it was a pretty quick truck back in it's day. Bought it from a chevy dealership in California right off the 10 freeway, I believe in Ontario, right off the showroom floor back in 1999. I miss that truck, had to sell it in 2003 because it wasn't practical for a family vehicle being only a 2 seater and me and my wife were starting our family at that time. Brings back memories watching this video.
its probably just rusted rings, might be worth pulling the plugs and filling the cylinders with marvel mystery oil and letting it sit a few days, then try putting a breaker bar on the crank bolt. Should be able to get it free
My Dad bought a 2001 S10 with the regular cab, short bed, and 4 cylinder engine brand new as a commuter vehicle when he worked 100+ miles away from where we lived. I loved that thing.
ZQ8= sports suspension package That's what ya want! I had a 2000 non extreme S10 but had the V6 and ZQ8. Basically an extended cab SS. Loved that truck all except the open rear diff one tire fryer. It was a fun lil truck!
I worked in the service department of a Chevy dealer when these things first came out. I saw a lot of them get the ground effects under the front bumper torn up when they were driven off the car carrier.
I had a 2000 gmc sonoma with the 4.3 and never had a problem with the head gasket blowing and I also had a 94 with the same engine and no problems. What does happen with them is the lower intake manifold gaskets and the spider injection on the 2000 would fail.
The first time I saw a strap with hooks attached was in 1979. A guy had a brand new pickup and was trying to pull another truck. The hook came off and put a huge dent in the tailgate of his brand new truck.
I used to have a blue 2001 S10 Extended cab Stepside Xtreme with the 4.3 5 speed. Perfect truck! I ended up spinning it in the snow and flipped in a ditch. Totaled it. 😢
My brother bought one of these brand new many years ago. Got the bright yellow with the black strips. It was definitely a good looking color combo and turned head's.
I miss the one I had... a 2000 Xtreme Black ,single cab, step-side, 4.3L with a 5sp. Man, that was a fun truck! I bought it in 2003 and started having kids/family and had to sell it
It really is the equivalent of picking up a chest freezer from the free section of Craigslist, and then finding out that it doesn't work. I'd bring this one straight to the crusher.
I had a '97 extended cab stepside don't remember the paint name but it was a pretty cool green, nice and dark with flakes, I shaved the rear step and had a cool front end blacked out. I loved the 4.3, had '90 blazer that was fun, got the manual when I got the '97. Loved that truck. Sold it to a mechanic @340k miles.

@AutoBat1 I literally watched one of the Cleetus and James V8 blazer vids at a friend's house after watching these videos (watched all of JR'S vids on this truck before watching the V8 blazer vid on Cleetus's channel)
Honestly if the engine is locked up yeah I agree LS swap it. But I would like to see you get the body looking like it was. Get all the OEM bumpers and stuff make it look like the original truck
Now you need to get a Beretta and recreate that picture! I love the Xtremes, I remember sitting in a brand new one (yellow with black stripes) at the Madison car show back in the day.
I just subbed i love these trucks I’m on my third Xtreme. First on was a step side pick up black in color, now I’m on my 2nd Xtreme blazer. I’m in stl looks like you just missed me. Can’t wait to see you work on this soon. And too bad you didn’t look sooner, some guy on Craigslist had a gm front valance and tonnue cover over for 100 bucks for the pair lol.
Wow that’s rough… on the flip side, I don’t think I have ever seen a 4.3 with a blown head gasket. They are usually fairly stout motors… plenty of Astros with 250,000 miles on the original motor.
I almost had my parents talked into getting me one back in the day. I was never a Chevy guy but I always thought these were cool little sport trucks. I hope you do a nice little LS swap on it and maybe with some nitrous for some extra giggles.
I had a 2000 Xtreme... extended cab, stepside bed, with the 4cyl & manual. It had a 4.10 rear end and would just eat those 12" wide tires. The big convert back then was stuffing v8's in them. Unfortunately, sold it to buy a full size truck due to expanding family. Heard the kid that bought it wrapped it around a pole a year or so afterwards.
I can agree also, got a 4.3 sitting in garage right now with heads off, it's a square body 91 cnotched-airbagged mini tuck tho, still as stylish imo as the ranger, most people drop 350s in these nowadays tho so originality goes out the window, good vid keep up the hustle as always JR 👍
I was hoping you would say that you were going to add 2 more cylinders. The extreme was a body kit really, put a nice ls in it and it will truely become what an xtreme should have been
Good job saving a keeper. I have a blue '01 with a pair of W I D E silver stripes and fiberglass tonneau cover and believe me, it gets a lot of "LOOKS". I'm asked often, "What is that truck? Is it a factory thing? What kind of engine is in it?" and a few "Hey man, that's a cool little truck!" etc. Spend the time and money to bring it back from the grave. They're not all that rare but as the years go by they continue to be more and more so. I've not lost a head gasket in mine but mine's not abused, it's been properly maintained by the mfg recommends. The mileage is 125K and I for sure enjoy owning it.
I have a 95 S Truck that I swapped a Chevy Small Block into .... There are kits available to swap in either a small block or an LS .... it is an easy swap ... about the same as dropping in a new V6 ..... That V6 is actually just a chevy small block with the front two cylinders lopped off. .... and either the small block or the LS would be easier to find.If it is an automatic with the 4.3 , it is probably the 700R4 which is what I have in my truck with a shift kit installed.
That poor thing was XTREMEly neglected. I loved those and the Blazers when they were popular. Someone around here has an Xtreme blazer that looks absolutely perfect. Plus, the last vehicle my mom owned before she died was an st10 extreme. She loved that truck. Oh ebay seems to have the side skirts for the xtreme that aren't crazy expensive. The front is on there as well.

You should remove the belt a seized alternator will stop the engine from turning. I got that same exact truck right down to the color. Mine was missing the front valance also I scored a new GM one for 350 on Amazon. The original 4.3 in mine has 240000 miles and runs perfect never uses any oil. Head gaskets aren't an issue I've ever heard of the intake manifold gasket is the problem to check for on the vortec. Lucky it's at it's core an s10 so parts like the interior and body panels are easy to get cheap. If you do install an LS engine it would be different if you actually did as close to factory as possible. All things working like ac etc and no check engine light with the cluster functioning properly.
Had one, blown head gasket. Question? First Gen 8850 John Deere, 6 headlights so the other farmers knew you spent 6 figures (bragging rights) 8 cylinder. Offer?
While I will say it wasn't the coolest truck ever......They were def awesome. I had one back in the day that had the full Mini Trukn treatment. Wish I still had it.
Are you sure it was the head gaskets or the more common intake manifold gaskets? Had mine done at 82,000 miles and the truck was 17 years old. Common to both v6 and v8 Chevs.
It never ceases to amaze me how cars in salt free areas can sit for decades without rusting. In the Northeast there would be no bottom to that truck.
That seems awful. Here in south ga, even the most neglected vehicles don’t rust.
I can attest my s10 lost a body line from rust
My s10 project was sitting so long that almost everything rubber was gone, there wasnt a single bit of real rust tho

Awesome story.
cool and awesome story
Time to invest in a winch, that would have been easy with a decent winch and cable. Hopefully it won't be too hard to get running, good luck with it.
Even a cheap Harbor Freight would have been useful.
A cable puller would have helped.
JR's history with winches is a little sketchy. He almost got the "off with his head" treatment when a cable snapped. BE CAREFUL.
He made a nice winch bracket for this trailer I think. It was a hitch mounted winch. Wonder why he didn’t use it.
@@JHruby Use a modern non-metal cable and that risk is almost 0.
