  • This is not sponsored in any way. I spent my own money on both of these mics and just wanted to share my thoughts. I'm still looking for the live mic that I like the most.

    I have the PTU-1U and, as I'm used to put the mic close to my chin pointing upward, the plosives have never been an issue for me. I love the distance range I get with it. I'm a wedding Officiant for destination weddings, so I just use the auto channel feature before starting and voila, the best!

    Solid video and great troubleshooting. good job with the content, context and analysis. Big change of pace from those getting freebies.

    hope this helps all of you.. excellent wireless mic systems are out there in 2024 and will not break the bank, but here's the deal and this is coming from 20+ years of experience in pro audio : #1. Go with a name-brand that you can trust and has been proven. #2. you ALWAYS get what you pay for (so if it's too good to be true, it 99.99% of the time it in fact IS).

    Thank you for this lovely video! I have ordered the Shure SM58 and put in bunch of $$. However, I was worried if i spent too much and came to look for proof that I made the right choice This video helped me pick SM58 simply due to the audio quality and the plosives and the overall hiss / handling noise.

    I just bought the latest model Phenyx Pro Wireless Microphone System, True Diversity Dual Cordless Microphone Set and couldn't get one that worked properly. I loved the price point and really wanted this to work but just fell short.

    The biggest thing with the PTU-1U that i noticed when i tried it out was the handle noise. Every time a vocalist readjusted their grip on the handheld i noticed the noise coming through the PA.

    • @BrandonWells
      @BrandonWells  ปีที่แล้ว

      it was noticeable through the PA while a band was playing in the background?

    • @womplestilskin
      @womplestilskin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonWells likely yes, or it just muddies up what should be clean sound. Live music often happens with a fair amount of sound reinforcement. You can hear the handling noise with 5 watts of desktop audio. Just think about 500 or 5000w or power moving air. Or all the time that the band gets quiet or drops out.

    Setting gains on these mics is different from all others. Because the capsule is so sensitive and bright (even worse on the lav and headset capsules) gains have to be set low, well below peak, and then you have to run your faders higher than normal to get the output. Receiver output should be no more than 12 o'clock on the dial. Less if you have a signal chain inserted.
    Ultimately i hope they eventually sell a replacement capsule to deal with handling noise and plosives and semblance noise. But at the point i also hope i have plenty of transmitters on hand because their prices will surely go up as the quality improves. But they do have a good starting point.
    I will try the popper stoppers for now.

    Thanks for the video. It helps with decision making. I like the SM58 a little better. It seemed to have a wider frequency response. The plosives were a bit more on the wireless as well.

    Yes...My Gosh. Handling Noise. Ty for Pointing that OUT ! Of course a .25 cent windscreen could help with the popping. PLEASE do use the mic at different distances from your mouth - For future videos. 1 INCh away sounds like this, 2" inches Etc. Ty for the insightful review

    1. Plosives
    2. Hiss noise
    3. Handle noise
    A single mic sounds like 4 or 8 sures connected. Imagine the compiled noise running 4 or 8 of these?

    I was thinking about picking up the Phoenix Pro PTU 7000-C which comes with two handheld microphones, two lav mics, and two headset mics for $300W something. What a deal! My application would be to have the lav mic on the officiant, and the wireless mic on a mic stand for the bride and groom. So I guess for my applications I shouldn't have to worry too much about the handling noise because the mic will be on a mic stand

    my gripe with phenyx pro mics, is the high noise floor and no line-level mic output from the receiver...price is excellent

    This might be the best test video on this mic. I like how it sounds, but a tad bit too noisy compared to the sm58. How's range and interference? Thanks in advance.

      I don't think I've ever experienced a dropout with the mic, or any sort of radio interference actually. It's pretty great with those

    Phenyx Pro (UGH! The "Pro" in the name just screams CHEAP) is definitely the best of the affordable microphones, they just have to figure out the handling noise and plosives and they will have a real winner. Supposedly, different capsules will be available for sale, though I'm not sure how much they can eliminate the handling noise in the capsule alone.

    • @BrandonWells
      @BrandonWells  ปีที่แล้ว
