Finnis language is not ”slightly” different, it’s completely different from almost every european language.

It's related to some languages, like Estonian, Hungarian and some minority languages that are almost extinct in Russia. They all belong to the Finno-Ugric language group.

@@RabbitShirak True. Finnish language is related to those languages you mentioned - but Finnish language is drifted so far apart of those ancestor languages, that we might as well say, that they are not related to us anymore at all. Only exception is Estonian language, which is pretty close. But for example Hungarian...there's not a one single word which is the same, means the same or is pronounced the same way as in Finnish. Closest one I can think of is the word for "water", which in Finnish is "Vesi" and In Hungarian it is " Víz". Not very close, to be honest. To me, Hungarian is totally different language to Finnish. Totally. Might be, that once upon a time, they were similar - but they are not anymore. Not even close.

To me Scotland is very similar to Finland. We have similar landscapes like fells, swamps and forests. Almost similar weather too, and strange foods that only we like. Scots are known for their grit, which is the closest translation to "Sisu". We have less castles than you but a dozen have survived from middle age and they can be visited. About saunas... all Finns have access to sauna in one way or the other. Older apartment buildings have common sauna for all the residents but in newer buildings the sauna is built in apartment or house. There are also a thousands of summer homes (cottages) around Finland and every one of them are equipped with sauna.

My favourite fish is muikku, not Miukku as it was written on the video. Nowadays kids start learning English at 7 yrs age, not 9 yrs as mentioned in the vid. Although many kids speak fluent English before that because of the world of TH-cam. My son started to speak English at 3 yrs of age due to him watching kids youtube content😊. Most of the Finns speak good English, even the older generation.

I recommend movie "Tuntematon Sotilas". There is new version of it from year 2019 I think. Also videos talking about Simo Häyhä, Lauri Törni and the Winter War. Wound concerning Russia has never healed in Finland, and now with the war in Ukraine, it is not looking any better.
Sunny nights are the norm, so it feels weird if it would be dark ion the night. So we have sun blocking curtains and sleep masks. No prob :)
Sauna is often built into apartments too. if however there is no sauna in your apartment, your apartment building will have a communal sauna. Every house in finland has a sauna. 2,5 million saunas in finland, if i remember correctly.

You might write and compose heavy metal songs during November when you haven't seen the sun in a month and you know its still dark 2 months. Sun is up during the day but usually you are at work. So you go to work when it's dark and get off when it's dark again. This is in southern Finland, at north they don't see the sun at all for many weeks. So alot of time to write metal music. :D

About that shyness, and "mow your own lawn" type of Finnish attitude versus "In your face" Heavy metal extravaganza!!!
How can it be that we are introverts - and at the same time we are extroverts?
    Well, it's quite simple :)
Usually we like to mind our business, and expect other people to do so as well - but if we are in a heavy metal band, we are there to put up a hella good show - and we expect the audience to join in :)
Even thou we like to mind our business, and expect other people to do so as well, it doesn't mean that we are in any way rude. We are very welcoming and warm hearted people. So, we like to mind our business - but we also absolutely love visitors :)

Best food in the world is "poronkäristys" - Properly made Reindeer meat with mashed potatoes. Best in the world - Hand on heart! Fried reindeer meat flakes are mind-blowingly good! All it needs is some salt and pepper. No extra fancy ingredients. Other ingredients would just mask the delicious reindeer flavor.
It's like Finnish kebab - only with reindeer, instead of sheep - and mashed potatoes, instead of french fries :) Only so, so much better...You must try it. It's pure ambrosia.

I don't find it very useful to separate Finland from Scandinavia. Yes Scandinavia is an area that consists of the Scandinavian mountains, and those mountains do not reach to Finland. But to say "there is a HUGE" difference between Finland and Scandinavia is just weird. There is not so much of a difference. The difference is the sea between the lands.
Yes it is correct to call Fin, Nor, Swe, Denmark as the Nordics and not Scandinavian when Finland is included, because of the geography...
But usually the term Scandinavian is used to discribe a cultural region and there Finland should be included.
Finland can not be separated from Sweden and Norway. Culturally, historically and geographically we are very much the same, with some different nyancés.
Finland and Sweden were the same country for 1000 years and in that timeline part of Norway and Denmark too.
Our politicians still do lot of co-operation. We have our own political agreements apart from the rest of the Europe.
We as people share the same mindset in many ways.

Best Finnish food, in my opinion, is either mashed potatoes with elk meat balls or fish soup made of hauki or other lake fish. Sun blocking blinds during summertime and wake-up-light during winter+D-vitamin, with those I have no major issues with sleeping. Finnish school has testing but teachers have created the formats to their "test bank" online and students have to write answers (and know them really) instead of multi-choice questions.

Wow, this video taught me some things that even I did not know, even though I'm a Finn. However, there was also a couple mistakes that should be corrected:
    1) The ownership of Åland was not decided by UN - which didn't exist in 1920's - but League of Nations.
    2) The commonly known home of Santa Claus in Finland is not Rovaniemi but Korvatunturi, a fell on the northern border of Finland and Russia.
    3) Speaking of which, Halti is also a fell, not a mountain. There are no mountains in Finland.
And yes, I knew that the land on the western coast rises each year. I learned that during the fourth class of comprehensive school.
//EDIT: The Finnish name of that forth fish mentioned in the video is not spelt "miukku" but "muikku". Apparently, its English name is "vendace".

It can make it harder for me to fall asleep and stay asleep, which of course can cause issues with fatigue or even cause a bit of mania for some people (basically feeling like you don't even need to sleep since the sun is up). Aside from what other's have pointed out, the history and relationship with Åland isn't as rosy as depicted. Åland actually wanted to be part of Sweden, for which we finns naturally said no to (though didn't know there was a suggested exchange of land). The dispute was taken to the League of Nations (replaced later by UN), which ruled that Åland would be part of Finland if it was allowed to keep the Swedish language and was given high autonomy. The people of Åland are still bitter about this, and as someone who lived a couple years there some of them might even be openly hateful to "mainland Finns" (though most of them don't care).
Regarding the daylight hours during summer and winter, summertime it's difficult to sleep (at least for me), while in winter we might experience something called "kaamosmasennus" (kaamosdepression, kaamos= the period during winter with no sun). Because the constant darkness might get to you, making you feel tired more than usual.

There is no huge difference between Nordic and Scandinavia. Also Scandinavian countries are Nordic countries and they are all members of the Nordic council. Finland 🇫🇮 is culturally, politically, economically, religiously and geographically a Nordic country with Sweden 🇸🇪 Norway 🇸🇯 Denmark 🇩🇰 and Iceland 🇮🇸
Also there are no post Soviet buildings in Finland. Finland was never a part of the Soviet union. Never under communism and never an eastern bloc country. A german architect Carl Ludvig Engel designed a lot of buildings for Helsinki and St Petersburg. He lived in Finland when Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of Russia's Empire of tsar.

Finns and Russians have an equally long shared history as Russians and Ukrainians do, and that's for one simple reason.
What is now the heartleand of Russia was originally inhabited by Finnic and Finno-Ugric peoples. As the Slavic expansion took place over the centuries, more and more of this Finnic land became part of different Russian states. Even Moscow was originally a Finnic town belonging to the Merya people called "Mustajoki", which in Finnic languages means "black river." Many of these Finnic peoples like the Merya, Meshchera and Muroma went extinct due to Russian expansion, with other Finnic peoples like Mari, Erzya and Moksha still existing in Russia but being highly endangered due to ongoing russification.
Then of course between Finns and Russians in particular we've had 1000 years of war, slavery, genocides and the like. The one beautiful exception would be from 1809 onwards for about a century when Finland was part of the Russian Empire as an autonomous grand duchy. The Finnish nobility wanted independence from Sweden and Russia helped us get it. Russia got to give a final knockout blow to Sweden and Finland got to retain its laws, religion and government. That century was an exceptional stretch of mutual benefit,
