    As a former Allen Edmonds dealer I can tell you that the Park Avenue and McAllister were our top sellers for many, many years.

    I found a pair of Allen Edmonds at a thrift store. They were beat up with holes in the bottoms. I paid 7 dollars for them because no one knew what they were. I paid 140 shipping included to have them refracted. That was 5 years ago and they still look brand new.

      They are almost free on Poshmark ~ I've bought so many I'm getting pickey. Only Brogued boots and price less than $30. I'm diversifying into British Loake and Tricker.

      You can have a pair of Walmart Shoes for 100 years. It all depends on how many hours you wear them in that period and what you are doing in them. Saying a shoe can last decades does not provide any information whatsoever.
      Even if worn every day for 20 years, one person could wear them for 8 hours sitting at an office and another could be walking in then for the full 8 hours.

      I concur here, except I've had my four pairs of AE's for 8 years or less. They handle Michigan's crazy weather like a breeze. I feel bad slowly expanding my rotation with some Carmina's that will be worn more.

    Thx for all you do Kirby - you have inspired me to do a much better job at dressing and taking the time to properly care for my garments and shoes. Huge difference in my life. I began watching your videos in February of this year, and wanted to look better. As a result, I have lost 82 pounds, feel fantastic and look great. All because I started watching. This is the influence you may not know you have on the folks that watch your videos. As a gift to myself, I purchased my first pair of CARMINA loafers. Not bespoke - but definitely very nice. Thx again for starting me on this journey. By the way, I’ve purchased a ton of shoe polish from your web store, along with shoe laces and horsehair brush. Love them!!

    Allen Edmonds definitely offer a great shoe at the $400 price point. I prefer Carmina, and think their toe shapes are much stylish, but both are great options. Can't forget J. Fitzpatrick and the flair he adds to many classic styles (you have a great interview with him btw).
    Another brand that I think offers great value and has beautifully made shoes is Cobbler Union - goodyear welted, beveled waists with a fiddleback, tight heels, lovely uppers, and very nice toe shapes. Definitely a brand worth looking into, but of course all of these are.

    I have Strands and Macallisters. Both are on their second soles and heels which were done by a local craftsman whose work is excellent. Excellent shoes made of full grain leather. You can’t go wrong with them. Best advice is to make sure that the last the shoes were made on resemble your foot. A.E. Numbers the lasts and lists which shoes come from which last. The vary quite a bit from the long and sleek European shapes to the roomier American shaped lasts.

    I always thought it was the other way around; as in the more Broguing, the more formal. Hmm. I learn something new every day! Thank you, Sir.

    • @MrDanielWP
      @MrDanielWP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You most definitely had that backwards. Broguing, wingtips, etc are not formal. A brogued derby isn't fit for a black tie event, for example.
      Edit: not an attack on you. Just making the point.

    Along with the wide selection of sizes and widths available from Allen Edmonds, they can also custom-make a shoe for you if your foot happens to fall outside of the sizes available online and in-store. I recently purchased a pair of AE Park Avenues in a 6.5 EE online. After receiving the shoes, I discovered they were a bit loose. I took them to my local AE store where they examined my foot and shoe fit. Even their own measurements concluded that I was a 6.5 EE. However, they explained that the Park Avenue (as well as other shoes made with the same last) tends to run a half size to one full size large. They recommended a size 5.5 EE for me, which they do not offer normally, and said that they could custom-make the shoe for an additional charge of $40. I went ahead with the purchase, and a few weeks later I had my great-fitting shoes. Yes, I have small feet, as I am a pretty short guy.

    Terrific video!
    I now have two pairs of Allen Edmonds (Walnut Liverpool Chelseas, and Walnut single Monk Straps with Dainite Soles).
    These are absolutely AMAZING boots / shoes. The style, craftsmanship, materials, fit and finish of this true American brand stands apart from anything else I own. Heirloom items, indeed.
    Great respect to Allen Edmonds Custom Projects Manager, artisan, and friend, Big Steve 'Sudsy' Sudsbury!

    Kirby, thanks so much for going into a discussion on the rubber soles. I live in Chicago, and always thought flat leather bottom dress shoes should come with a helmet. Not to mention, they feel like a minimalist shoe walking on pavement and concrete, far from comfortable or common sense. Good to know that you aren't aghast at a rubber bottom, even if it didn't take an old man to craft it.

    Having just received a pair of Allen Edmonds MacNeil 2 (factory seconds) barely worn once or twice which I bought via eBay, I just discovered this video and The Hangar Project. I paid $80 for them, and was concerned about some of the photos the seller posted showing finish and stitching flaws. I reasoned, if I really didn't like them, I could probably sell them for the same amount or even more (the seller hadn't done a very good job of presenting and selling on eBay).
    In person, I'm delighted! Imperfections in the sole edge finish were covered and perfected with one coat of Fiebing's dye. Hydrating with mink oil, cream, and shining (as you instruct in your How to Shine Allen Edmonds Shoes video -- THANKS!), the blemishes are almost impossible to find, and will disappear further with use, time, and shining. These imperfections are very manageable with just a little effort and knowledge. Only careful scrutiny of the shoes would discover them. On the other hand, these factory seconds have full leather soles -- I prefer the Danite soles for all weather, frequen NYC walking.
    Nonetheless, $80 for almost perfect Allen Edmond's is not just a deal, it's a steal! Loving my two other AE first quality pairs of shoes, Firenze Italian loafers and Globetrotters, for the past six years, getting a new job in insurance, it was time to step up to something dressier. Now that I've experienced AE Factory Seconds, I'm definitely open to paying $195 to AE for seconds, and when they've done their job (and I've done more of mine), full price for first quality!

    I think their Cornwallis is their best style, very minimal lace up oxford with minimal broguing and medallion, it can be worn in place of a typical formal cap toe which I’ve always found to be tacky, I prefer the look of a wholecut oxford, but the discreet medallion makes it just as formal of a shoe, suitable for everything other than black tie.

    Back in the 90’s, I finished college late in life and had an opportunity to work for a computer consulting company. I didn’t have much, but I needed to buy some suits and some dress shoes. As luck would have it for me, a local shoe store was going out of business and I was able to get some great deals on several pairs of shoes. The guy convinced me to spend the extra money and buy Allen Edmonds shoes and I did. I can honestly say that the Allen Edmonds shoes that I bought were not only well made, unlike other dress shoes that I’ve owned in the past they got more comfortable throughout the day. Seriously. Those leather lined Allen Edmonds shoes just seemed to mold to my feet. I worked very long hours at my new job but my feet always felt great.
    When it comes to your feet, always buy quality. You will never regret it. Your feet are your foundation.

    The Park Ave. in black was the very first pair of Allen Edmonds that I purchased; I liked them so much that I got the Strands in walnut followed by the Cornwallis in dark chili. I would say the AE Verona II Italian horse bit loafer is an excellent shoe for the money. They are extremely comfortable to wear as an every day work shoe due to their soft calfskin & flexible leather outsole. With 3 colors available and a $350 price point it's a great value for an Italian made shoe.

      Jose,
      I just purchased my first pair of AE shoes (Dalton Boot) and thought they fit me well and were true to size. I have seen some Alden shoes online that interest me, but there is no store in my area to judge size and comfort. I am curious to know if your experience with the Alden’s in terms of fit and whether they are less comfortable. I wear a standard 10D if that has is a factor.
      Thanks for your time!

    I have been buying Allen Edmonds shoes at thrift stores for a while now. I have 4 pair 2 in brown and 2 black Park avenues and 5th avenues with brogue. I have a pair of loafers and just got a pair of in oxblood and black. I have had the loafers sole protected and will do the same with my oxblood pair. I think I have less then 200 dollars in them and that;s with the maintenance. I buy them and shine them and wear them. They are by far my most comfortable shoes. Hi Kirby,
    I’m curious what you recommend if one could only afford two pairs of dress shoes. Given one was a black oxford, what might be a good second choice? I’m soon to be 27, athletic, will get married in May, and I’ll likely be wearing these with blue/navy suits or grey trouser combinations. Style wise I’d choose between a double monk and a brogue of some kind. Color wise, I’d like medium brown, dark brown, or burgundy.
    Love the channel. Thanks so much.

    I own a dark brown Park Avenue. It felt very nice and comfortable from the very first wear. The design looks a bit more rounded compared to shoes that I have from Carmina or Loding which look more contoured. One thing I feel about my PA is that the rubber on the heel seems to be softer compared to other shoes that I have. I have seen small stones stuck or pierced sometimes only on this shoes. I'm not sure if this is the case in general because may be AE uses softer rubber on purpose or if it is just the case with my shoe. But overall I'm very satisfied with the shoe itself esp. the color and soft shine I get after polishing.

      That's awesome! Congratulations. If you take care of them, they'll last you for the rest of your life and only get better with age. The three most important things you can do:
      1. Use shoe trees
      2. Use a shoe horn
      3. And polish them regularly with Saphir Shoe Polish!
      Every 3-5 years depending on how often you wear them, you'll need to get them resoled. But the Goodyear Welt construction allows this to be easily done either by AE through their recrafting program or a local cobbler.

    Enjoyed your video, it brings back memories of 35 years ago when I used to be a rag merchant, selling Hart and Corbin suits with Johnston and Murphy shoes but I would side order a pair of Alden. Since my clothing selling days, I went into blue collar employment and changed my foot wear to Russell Moccasins which is another great American shoe company, enough of reminiscing..the morale of the story is to buy once and save in the long run. The enjoyment factor far out weigh the initial investment! Thanks Again, Kirby..

    I started out with a model no longer made called the ‘Stockbridge’. Easily the most comfortable dress shoes I ever owned. Still have them. Waiting on Preston at The Elegant Oxford to reply to me about restoring them ;) I bought Strands after that and loved them. The brogueing has split and they’re not salvageable sadly. I now have two pair of McCallisters in walnut and dark chili. Always get the danite sole as I wear these all the time and it’s just more comfortable than the thin leather sole.

      I have a pair of TBNY shoes because I didn't do my due diligence and would not recommend. The materials, construction, and comfort are all poor and I dont wear them because of that.
      Allen Edmonds and Carmina sound like a much better buy at this price option (AE is below with sales). I'm looking to replace my TBNY shoes will Carminas as I don't like AEs stylistically. Kirby's videos have me drolling over Gaziano & Girling but I don't think i can justify the cost yet.

    1. Park Avenue in Burgundy Shell Cordovan (Gorgeous...)

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, you've got a pair in Cordovan! That's fantastic. It's such a great material. Just remember that Cordovan does require special treatment and that it's best to not use standard solvent-based shoe polishes on it. The reason is that since Cordovan is a membrane that is highly-compressed during the tanning process, the solvents can cause the fibers to expand when it penetrates the leather. The Saphir Cordovan Cream Polishes use a Neat's Footoil to condition the leather without causing the fibers to decompress.

    Hi Kirby - always enjoy you videos - 1) how do you compare Allen Edmonds to Alden in terms of quality workmanship?, 2) I've always used heel taps to enable a longer lasting heel, but have seen some men wearing them under the toe - do you recommend both or either heel and toe taps?

    I think these days they call "brown" "coffee brown" although I am not sure if they really carry that through all their dress models consistently. I also saw "mahogany" as an option for at least a few, last time I was looking at their online store. Not arguing, just adding another next layer to what someone can expect when taking their own gander at AE's collection.

    I have 4 pairs of Allen Edmonds and like them, I purchased a used pair of Church's and used your Presidential Shine video to get them looking great. I wanted to ask you if you ever have done a casual shoe video on Chukka boots, I would like to find something with a pebble grain leather or a football type leather in a dark blue, any ideas on where to find a pair? Keep up the great videos!

    I have numerous pairs of AEs and until recently would have picked my McCallister's in cordovan as my favorites. However I picked up a pair of Firenze bit loafers in black and absolutely love them. Also, I found a pair of Longbranch boots in brown and am hoping the weather in Arizona cools off soon so I can really start wearing them.

    I own 2 pairs of AE, Strand Brogue in Walnut, and Randolph Penny loafer in brown. Both pairs have been welcome additions to my sparse shoe collection. I previously had Beckett-Simmonon Fonseca boot and the Idrese Harvey/Chelsea. I would recommend any of these pairs and consider them to be quality constructions.

    Thank you for a very well done video Sir. I have recently retired from a 21 year career in Law Enforcement and find myself in a new job where looking smart is the norm. I have the Park Avenue, the Fifth Avenue, and the McCallister that you speak of. Instead of a Strand, I went with a Strand Mok because I really wanted one pair that I could wear in bad weather. My question for you is in getting the Mok version how much does that downgrade a shoe in terms of "formalness"? Thank you.

    That's a great video Kirby. I own a pair of black park avenues, and I'm looking to build a collection of these four classics. I was thinking of the following: park ave in black (which I own), 5th ave in brown or dark chili (more on that in a sec), strand in walnut and finally mcallister in oxblood. I'm having a hard time deciding between brown or dark chili for the 5th ave. What are your thoughts on that? On the collection idea overall? Cheers.

      Johnny this guy gives AEs so many backhanded compliments its like why did I even invest in these shoes. I personally feel the quality has indeed gone down a step or so, but for 400 dollars they are still the best buy for me.

    • @johnnysack1947
      @johnnysack1947 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericday4505 It's funny you mentioned that, but I recently bought a pair of AE Sanford's from Ebay for around $50. It turns out that the pair I ordered have 5 eyelets, which AE stopped making by 2001, so really what I got was a 20 year-old pair of shoes that were in impeccable shape. In fact, these were noticeably better quality than the recent AE's that I purchased within the last 5-10 years. My local cobbler was ecstatic to see old-school stitching again.
      Yes, the QC that AE used to have has gone downhill over the last few years (I believe the lack of stable ownership may have something to do with that) and it sucks. I've been lucky that my recent purchases from the company are mainly defect-free but I've seen some real turds on Reddit and Styleforum. It's a shame.

    AE are simply the best for me at least. I have big and sensitive feet, these seem to always fit and are easy for me to walk in. I need a 13 EEE, and I can find almost all their shoe lines in this size. They have the Carlyle line, which doesn't even have the cap toe strip at all. Perfect shoes for formal events. I'd rate them as a good first shoe over even the park avenue and fifth avenue lines. They are most used as my go to job interview shoes. AE also carries a nice line of Cordovan leather shoes. Not many shoe makes still make those!

    As always, an excellent video Kirby. I have had some QC issues with Allen Edmonds of late and, as much as I love the idea of the American made shoe, I propose 3 other brands that I think give you more bang for the buck in the same range: Carmina ($40ish more), Carlos Santos ($50ish less expensive), and J Fitzpatrick. These brands at similar prices offer, IMO, sleeker profiles, the beveled waist, and a more elegant toe shape. Just one man's opinion, even though I own and enjoy AE.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree with you. Especially considering that one can now purchase Carmina direct from Spain, it's a pretty fantastic deal. J. Fitzpatrick also a very sleek brand and uses much nicer leathers than AE.

    I’m a new AE customer and have a black Park Ave (dainite) arriving tomorrow and a black Randolph (dainite) coming from the custom shop in a few weeks. I will add more over time but what would be a good next shoe and color to add? I work in an investment bank but have been wearing more Wolf & Shepard knit shoes in the mix in this post covid world wear it feels like things have just become a bit more casual. When I’m in the office I would wear a suit if I had meetings, but usually just a mix of dress pants and chinos with button downs most of the time.
    These would mainly be for work unless I had something a bit more dressy going on during a weekend.
    My gut tells me a wingtip or strand in coffee or Chile but I’m terrible with fashion so wanted to ask here. That or another Randolph in the same colors that May get more weekend use too?
    Thank you,
    Mike

    best to try them on (as with any shoes) to determine which last fits you best. i have a pair of the Strand's and they are amazing and gorgeous. however, they are not the perfect fit for me. i ordered them online as they were on a big clearance sale from Nordstroms and while they do fit, the shape isn't perfect. i still love them, they are a special shoe and nothing looks like them.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. If your boots get wet often, a Dainite would make a huge difference and help protect the shoe from moisture. I would also recommend waterproofing them with the Saphir Super Invulner. It doesn't contain any silicones and is safe to use on calfskin of even the finest quality.
      The Tarrago Nano Protector is an incredibly effective waterproofing spray, but is almost too good and not something I would ever advice for a pair of nice leather or suede shoes. The Saphir Super Invulner, on the other hand, is safe to use on fine shoes while still providing effective waterproofing.
