Hi Kirby. Really enjoy these videos and have been following The Hangar Project for a few months now. Having bought some cheaper shoes recently I have taken the plunge now and ordered a pair of Allen Edmonds. A pair of Carlyles in dark chilli are winging their way to Glasgow Scotland as we speak. I plan to use this method for their first shine. However, would you recommend a coat of dubbin prior to beginning this shine? Also what pigmented saphire creams would you recommend for polishing the dark chilli finish? many thanks, craig.
The Hanger Project ....I love you work sir. This reminds me of the time I used to spend polishing my shoes. I have a pair of AE coming soon, I will use this technique.
Kirby Allison I noticed that you are not applying the mirror wax/water carefully. Is it because you are concerned about time, or it is just you ? The unevenness is so noticeable on the left shoe, left side of the toe cap.
I’m a straight woman and I love shinning shoes, I remember as a girl going to school my sister and I would spend Sunday’s shinning our shoes for school the coming week, we had our kit with all our polishes and brushes and cloths and yes it is therapeutic .....
Just ordered the Hanger Project shoe shine kit for father's day, just in time to receive my Allen Edmonds shoes - also for Father's Day :-) Best Father's Day Ever! Can't Wait! I haven't felt this excited for Father's Day in a long, . . . wait, make that NEVER! Thanks Kirby :-)
Kirby, I love how you became mesmerized as you were polishing up the caps. I've been there myself. Shining my shoes is always a zen moment for me. I think back to how my Dad taught me how to shine my shoes, to shave, to be a good husband, father and gentleman. Thanks, Kirby. Wonderful work.
Just love that dark brown leather. And as you say, shining your shoes is great therapy. Ad some Chet Baker or Miles Davis (and maybe a little something to drink) and life is not so bad after all.
I couldn't agree more... most men are intimidated by dressing well because they think it is difficult. Other menswear channels geek out about this and that. But the reality is that if you invest in high-quality, classic clothing, there are few combinations you pick that wouldn't look great.
I love how much care and condition you have for this stuff. Your joy really shows in the video, and it’s so wholesome to watch. Also JSYK, your Hangar Project brush was listed by Wirecutter as their top recommendation :)
I work at a bootbarn and mostly wear boots, but I am considered our stores boot and boot cleaning expert. So thanks very much for new knowledge on shoe shining and helping me take my work to the next step
Kirby, I just bought some AE Leiden wingtips in walnut and followed your advice that a new pair of AE need some polish. So I ordered saphir renovateur, saphir light brown creme polish, a horse hair brush, and cotton chamois from you...oh my word, the result is amazing! Thank you so much for all your videos. I followed this video step by step, excluding the wax polish and I'll be doing this routine for all my AEs!
I am a new Allen Edmonds shoe owner, and I can say after discovering this high quality shoe and wearing them, it definitely makes one feel regal. Thank you for your video on how to make a great shoe even greater. I have subscribed to your channel
AE's are great for the money only on sale - the quality/price ratio is seriously beneath other brands in the $300 range, such as Meermin's Linea Maestro
From reconciling financials to v-lookups, pivot tables, and creating data visualizations; taking little breaks during the workday to study Kirby's leather care methods really helps me prepare for using my new Saphir products on my AE collection! Thanks, Kirby :)
I recently bought a pair of AE park avenues and stumbled across this channel looking for tips to keep them pristine. BY the end of the video I had purchased the starter kit from your website. Bravo, you show such an attention to detail I was blown away. I look forward to watching the rest of your content!
Greetings from nr Liverpool England, I’ve been binge watching your TH-cam videos over the last 48hrs Kirby there excellent 👌, I’ve even bought all the shoeshine products except hangerprojects brushes etc and I’ve been polishing my Grenson Chelsea Boots ( Burgundy Leather ) whilst watching this TH-cam video. 10/10 for the video my friend.
I love the detail and attention you put into everything. I've discovered I've been polishing my shoes only halfway my whole life. Thanks for your inspiring passion!
Watching this video again, as my new pair of Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenues just arrived in the mail. Great to follow along as I nourish, polish and wax them. Cannot thank you enough for your videos and for packaging all the products I need along with a great cedar shoe shine box!
This is nuts polishing shoes at 3:00 in the morning watching a shoe polishing video and actually using Saphir products that I purchased from Kirby Allison
22:35 was the most interesting part. A great pair of shoes can totally change how you get treated. I have many leather boots from Taft. I use leather wipes to keep it clean. I tried polishing one of them and the color of the shoe changed quite a bit later on, I hated that. Some of my shoes also have a color gradient so I am unable to use a polish on them. I never used polish on the other boots, just cleaned them with leather wipes. I will surely get the Saphir Renovateur
When I was in the army we would always have to look very smart, especially for parades, and we would take great trouble spit-shining our boots for glassy toe-caps.
Just bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds. Great video by Kirby explaining the need to prep my new shoes prior to wearing them for the first time and the step-by-step instructions. I never knew that new shoes straight out of the box didn't have any polish on them. I will be buying some of the Saphir products Kirby recommends from the Hanger Project. From what I've read and researched Saphir products are the gold standard.
It is not enough to buy shoes, they still need to be put in a fighting position. Many people forget about it. In this video, Kirby, the feeling that after a night in the pub :D
I use a slightly different polishing method, but I love your videos on the subject. Polishing one's shoes is undeniably a meditative, enjoyable activity. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but the results speak for themselves. On an unrelated note: Consider shirt collars with a less extreme spread when you wear jackets like that. It's a detail most will miss, but I think it looks better when the angle of the collar runs parallel to the angle of the seam of the lapel.
The Hanger Project Your friend is a wise man. It always looks more harmonious and elegant when the collar spread aligns with the angle of the lapel notch.
Thanks for this video. I’m getting my first quality pair of shoes from Crockett and Jones in a couple of weeks. The way you explain what the different polishes and stages of the process achieve, makes it very easy to learn from
During my time in the United States, Coast Guard honor guard, I spent a total of six hours on my boots. Do you have a perfect mirror shine. And I must say, I did not go unnoticed.
According to the AE website, the park and fifth avenues are made out of shell cordovan. I read somewhere that shell cordovan doesn’t have open pores the same way calfskin does, therefore, it doesn’t accept pigment in the same way. Is this baseless? Of course, I’m impressed by the outcome in the video and inclined to think that shell cordovan equally benefits from care and is capable of achieving a high gloss finish.
As other people have said, as the economy continues to crash I find myself polishing my shoes almost as a hobby or an escape. It is like being back in military school or military college. My shoes look great.
This was the best shoe romance I've ever seen! Truly a labour of love! Subbed. Liked. Will follow these instructions for my new black leather shoes. I was never able to get my military boots to that superior mirror shine when I was a cadet, but I'll try this method and see how it turns out. The Saphir products look to be superior to others. I'l look for it. Great video and attention to detail.
Thank you for the video! Do we need to first add the mirror shine and than the pate de luxe or the pate first(or it’s don’t make a difference which one is first! It’s better to use pate color or natural if I have a lot of shoes with different colors.. Thanks!
Under what circumstances are round laces preferable to flat laces and vice versa? What's the difference? Is it simply a matter of personal preference? Is one more formal than the other?
I prefer Obenaufs leather oil or heavy duty leather conditioner. I have gotten away from the mink based stuff. Everything I have used the Obenaufs on has just soaked it up like there was no tomorrow.
Great video. Just purchased a shoe shine kit from your website and am excited to enjoy it for decades. One question-do you sell the leather mat you have on the table in this video?
Kirby because of you I god brand new Allen Edmonds McCalister, is allready conditioner and polished! No to mention cost me $400 but shoes are beautiful!
Thank you for this tutorial. I just bought a pair of Allen Edmonds for my first high end shoes. And the way I got them to shine was amazing. I got multiple compliments on them. Your channel is making me dress much classier and because of that the compliments I get is insane.
Back when I was in the Army (about 40 years ago) we were issued Allen Edmonds (they became famous by making shoes for the military). The first thing we would do is set fire to a can of polish and then put the fire out. Now the liquid polish was applied in a thick layer to the shoe--and once again set on fire. When the fire went out we were now ready to polish. Sounds crazy I know but I still have the pair I was issued in Basic and they still look great. True I don't wear them as much any more but I do wear them when I dress up.
Picked up a brand new pair of Allen Edmonds Black Park Avenue (Calfskin). Following along with the video. Only on step 1. with application of Renovator and there is a lot of black dye/stain on the buffing cloth and my fingers with which I am applying the Renovator. Is this normal for a brand new pair of shoes straight from the factory? Although Kirby is using a Dark Brown pair in this video, there is little to no brown color/stain I can see rubbing off onto the cloth he is using to apply the Renovator with. Not sure if this is black dye from the tanning perhaps or black polish, though I know Kirby explains shoes are not pre-polished at the factories following manufature. Thanks in advance.
Amazing, it’s like you added $400 worth of extra quality to the leather, they look more like bespoke leather now! Kirby, do you ever treat the arch section of the leather sole and also where the heal side on that part. I always do once a month as I find it helps with any potential cracking that can occur if one is caught out in a rain show and then the leather dries.
Hello, I purchased a pair of Nashua Tessel Loafer In black with brown trim. What kind of polish do I need to keep them looking new all the time with the two color tones? Thank you
I have about 3 different colors of shoe. Can I use a neutral wax for buffing and shining and the use specific colored creams and renovateur? The cost is already getting up there without using different pate de luxe polish colors for each shoe...
Great tutorial! Do you still sell sovereign grade shoelaces on your website? The item descriptions on the website don't mention them being sovereign grade anywhere.
I agree, masterclass thanks! Nice music and level, even tough I could probably be without it. Will a toecap model hold the mirrorshine better than a wholecut model? I like the shoelaces thet actually stands up but even not my master cobler have them in one colour.
Thank you for posting your wonderful videos. I have one question for you. I've noticed that you do not condition or apply polish to the tongue of these shoes. Is this normal or have I missed something? I apologize if this has been asked before. Thank you for your time.
I received a new pair of AE 5th Avenue's today. Of course the first thing I did was apply Saphir Renovateur. Unfortunately the color came off. Not just polish but what appears to be dye. When I tried to use a brush afterwards it actually left lines from where the color came off. Is this a known issue? Will AE warranty them?
Thank you so much. I just have mirror shined my shoes for the first time of my life. I absolutely loved it and the result is amazing. Thanks again. Can't stop watching your video's!
What colors of sapphire should I use for cordovan allen Edmonds in burgundy. The Bordeaux or burgundy? I’m worried they may become almost black with more burgundy polish. Shoes are new.
Hello I have seen a few of your videos in one you put 3 coats of the mirror gloss first then the soft wax polish. I found that it was best to use nail polish first to take off the makers dye then use some cream polish then the 3 coats of mirror gloss then the soft wax then buff. And I do use cold water as you do
Lots of info there sir, thanks for the vid. I wasn't expecting that big of a shine on that toe cap. I was wondering though, I never seen you hit the tongue with anything? Its still considered the exterior part of the shoe. Anyway many thanks and keep up the great video's.
I use the Saphir Renovateur on the tongue; it moisturizes like the cream and I haven't seen degradation in the color (which would suggest to use the cream).
Hello Kirkby I've just done a complete strip down of a pair of C&J calf skin, light tan Derby. When I used the renovator, it's left a mottling effect on parts of the shoe (mainly the vamp). Any ideas what I may have done wrong? Thank you.
Kirby, thanks as always, but I managed to mess up pretty bad. Using all saphir and Hanger Project materials, everything you’re using in the video, I took off some finish of my new AEs during the mirror shine process. My stomach flipped over. I stopped applied some cream polish and buffed it but you can still see the blemish I left. So after the renovateur, cream polish and pate de luxe wax, I started with a little water on the high shine chamois, and a light coat of mirror gloss. Looked good so I went for another coat. More water and more mirror gloss. Then hell broke loose. I don’t know if I had too much water or not enough, didn’t seem like too much wax, but the finish started to come off of the shoe, not just the mirror shine. 1) Has anything like this ever happened to you 2) what did I do wrong and how can I make sure it doesn’t happen again? I have used the mirror technique from you earlier video with great success on a few other pairs. It’s much like this but a little different. I was surprised at how using the same products turned so wrong so fast.
Thank you Kit I sometimes have the same problem. I think it is because I used too much water, but not sure. Looking forward to the response from Kirby!

Kirby Allison tremendously helpful!
Kirby Allison I noticed that you are not applying the mirror wax/water carefully. Is it because you are concerned about time, or it is just you ? The unevenness is so noticeable on the left shoe, left side of the toe cap.
The most impressive thing of this video is Kirby does all of this without getting any pigment on his ungloved fingers, jacket, tie, or white shirt.
Same, I always have to use gloves. I just can't manage it.
Sure thing. It's impossible to me achieve this kind of professionalism
Didn't you notice the edits? He cleaned and changed his clothes about 16 times.
I find this extraordinarily arousing how this man is so profoundly caring about the finish of these shoes
For a guy who mostly buys his (I now realize) crappy casual shoes at Costco, I am addicted to these shoe videos, especially Kirby Allison’s!
I’m a straight woman and I love shinning shoes, I remember as a girl going to school my sister and I would spend Sunday’s shinning our shoes for school the coming week, we had our kit with all our polishes and brushes and cloths and yes it is therapeutic .....
cool, how is that related to being a straight woman, I wonder.

Kirby, that tie knot is fantastic.
Hypnotised? I know this feeling so well, Mr. Allison. To me it is a form of meditation. A particular state of mind.
Brunon Bierżeniuk Meditation... certainly a better word!
The idea of 'building' up your own shoe is both meaningful and beautiful. Great tutorial 👌🏼
From reconciling financials to v-lookups, pivot tables, and creating data visualizations; taking little breaks during the workday to study Kirby's leather care methods really helps me prepare for using my new Saphir products on my AE collection! Thanks, Kirby :)
you sound like a deuschebag
Thank you very much Mr. Allison,So very happy to be a new subscriber!!

Great job. Love how you're wearing a suit while shining shoes.

Which are the laces used in this video? Difference between waxed and non-waxed?
amazing - youtube is a source of almost all the knowledge about each every mundane job with a lot of depth and detail...
Great video. Super informative. I will stop in the next time I am coming through Dallas. Hope to see you then.

That Saphir Renovateur is great! One of the best shoe care products out there!
Excellent technique Sir, what a great finish on the shoe. Thank you.
Just picked up my first pair of AE's. Bartlett's. Looking forward to conditioning and polishing them. Kirby's got a nice way of talking.
You completely changed it. That shine you start getting after 22:00 is incredible. It's also contagious how much you're enjoying yourself. Cheers.
Is their a reason why you don't leave the wooden shoe lasts in while you polish Kirby??? 👏👍👌💪😉🔥 Kind regards Ben from NZ
I enjoy all of Kirby’s videos. Can he record a video of himself changing his own motor oil in a nice bespoke suit and his newly polished shoes 😊
I can't believe I watched this, I'm going to start therapy in the morning.
I have, also, seen your wonderful bespoke suits.
I'm still in wonder on how you polish shoes wearing the wonderful garments! 😮

Very informative. What level of quality in general would you rate Allen Edmonds' line of shoes? Thanks!
Great tutorial! Is there another time you use the Renovatuer other than the first polish? Thank you.
Thank you for posting your wonderful videos. I have one question for you. I've noticed that you do not condition or apply polish to the tongue of these shoes. Is this normal or have I missed something? I apologize if this has been asked before. Thank you for your time.
Do you recommend coordinating your suit color with the shade of the shoes being polished?
I received a new pair of AE 5th Avenue's today. Of course the first thing I did was apply Saphir Renovateur. Unfortunately the color came off. Not just polish but what appears to be dye. When I tried to use a brush afterwards it actually left lines from where the color came off. Is this a known issue? Will AE warranty them?
If you use a cigar lighter to melt the polish you can get a really nice mirror finish in the leather.

What colors of sapphire should I use for cordovan allen Edmonds in burgundy. The Bordeaux or burgundy? I’m worried they may become almost black with more burgundy polish. Shoes are new.

Love your videos Kirby. I thought my new shoes looked good out of the box, but they look amazing now. Thanks!

Hello Kirkby
I've just done a complete strip down of a pair of C&J calf skin, light tan Derby. When I used the renovator, it's left a mottling effect on parts of the shoe (mainly the vamp). Any ideas what I may have done wrong? Thank you.
What is the process like after this, for say, a daily or weekly maintenance ?
hello. did he use a black mirror gloss mixed with the brown pate luxe. or is it a brown one mirror gloss ? thx for answers :)
Do you condition shoes that are not new? Like if they already have a good shine do they still the renovateur?
I have a new pair of Park Avenues in burgundy. What color Saphir Pommadier should I use on them (I don’t see a “burgundy” option)?
Could I use the pommadier cognac to lighten the color of my dark chili park avenues rather than the suggested tobacco?
Fantastic tutorial!!! Do you have a video on how to polish black dress shoes to a super black result?
1) Has anything like this ever happened to you
2) what did I do wrong and how can I make sure it doesn’t happen again?
I have used the mirror technique from you earlier video with great success on a few other pairs. It’s much like this but a little different. I was surprised at how using the same products turned so wrong so fast.
Thank you Kit I sometimes have the same problem. I think it is because I used too much water, but not sure. Looking forward to the response from Kirby!
Does the mirror shine have to be the same color or the neutral color can be applied as well to achieve same result?
H8 what cloth did you use? You mentioned it in your video but I was not able to understand. Thanks
Hello Kirby. I have purchased my first pair of Park Avenues. They are size 8. What size Sovereign Grade Shoelaces do you recommend?
