  • We obviously know agent 007 very well through the many films and novels over the years, but what do we know about his fellow 00 agents? In this video, I detail the various appearances and mentions of the other members of the 00 section in both the films and the Fleming novels.

@@afonsolucas2219 I’d like to believe that MI6 capitalized on Bond’s infamy by making him the obvious distraction. It would give some operational flexibility for the other agents to work while the villains focused their attention on specifically 007. He’s probably talked about by villains like John Wick was in his franchise.
“He’s a man of focus, commitment, and shear fucking will. If Bond wants you dead then you’re living on borrowed time. The only way to stop him would be a missile strike powerful enough to level a small island”

I did always enjoy the running bit of how "008 would replace Bond" if either he screwed up, got pulled, or killed, as well as how Bond seems to respect him. I got the impression that the reason 008 is pretty much the only other 00 Agent besides Bond to never die through the series was because he was a lot more by the book, reserved, focused, and down to earth compared to other 00 Agents. Sort of in comparison to Bond's tendency to get more aggressive and occasionally reckless than may have always been necessary.

But there's something about that scene that a lot of Bond fans get screwed up. That's not 001 on the far left over there(or far right, if you are M, and you are facing them). Think about it. If you were British, and you were M, would you position them so that 001 is to your far right, or your far left? British actor "Peter Roy" says that he was told that he was portraying "006" in this scene, and he was seated to Sean Connery's right, which further confirms this. This means that the Double-O Agents to Sean Connery's left are: Bill Timothy 008, Peter Smith 009, John Wolfgramm 0010, a female 0011(I thought of a good name for her too. What do you think of "Llewelyn Freeman 0011"?), Sam Johnston 0012, and 0013(and I even thought of a good name for him. What would you think of "Bruce Bullinger 0013"?).

That’s because it’s the James Bond franchise not the 00 franchise. It’s focused on one agent’s adventures. Spin offs would dilute the brand in Barbara Broccoli’s opinion.

It would be great to see 007 having help with some other 00 Agent. It would make the Bond lore much better. Sadly, we all know how most of the James Bond movies works, they prefer to make 007 as the perfect hero instead of someone that needs helps sometimes or having another character to steal the spotlight even for some minutes. Same logic with Batman, "why making him having a side-kick (Robin) if we can make a entire movie of Batman solving everything by himself?"

  • @ErectedGasCan
    @ErectedGasCan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Extremely interesting.
I have enjoyed finding out about the other 00 agents but have not come across such a good list before.
Though i think the 00 agents must be rather equal in skill, though their personal traits such as personality or psyche must be taken to account when comparing them.
Bond might be alive by canon, but he has been severely injured at several points, and even "killed" because of sloppiness in the (NON-CANON) Never Say Never.
Though 00 agents have been killed under similar circumstances that 007 survived, also other MI6 operatives like 707 has been killed, when the situation has not been in any way thought to be hazardous, and the deaths are overwhelmingly obscure.
007 has three traits that must be keeping him alive.
Luck. He has lady fortune on his side.
In missions, gambling and the ladies.
    (Pre-Craig)
    Charisma, class and presense.
He has sweet talked himself out of dozens of rough spots.
    The gadgets.
Good thing that the missions happen to bring forward just the 'definitive death' situations, that the Q-branch equipment happens to corrulate with...
And what if it just happens that 007 is the only operative that constantly stumbles upon villains who feel a need to tell Bond what their plans are, and especially, how they plan to kill him-then leaving him to die without supervision or a single guard?

    • @Jotari
      @Jotari 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The old cliche that villains actually tell Bond their plan which many stories like to parody isn't really all that well founded in the movies. It's much more common that Bond has figured out the plan throughout the course of the movie, and when he comes face to face with the villain near the end of the movie it's usually Bond showing off that he knows what the plan is by telling it to the villain, all for the benefit of the audience. It's basically a Poirot moment, only it's the preclimax of the story rather than the climax as there's a whole bunch of shooting and explosions to follow.
Course shooting him on the spot and not having any conversation at all would of course be way wiser on the villain's part.

You would imagine that all the other 00 agents were the equal of Bond . After all they have all achieved the status of a 00 Agent and passed the same test , so they should be as formidable an operative in the field as 007 himself. It’s interesting to note that all the 00 agents seem to be men too, but perhaps that’s just a relic from the old 1960’s heritage of the source material? There are probably lots of female 00 Agents. It’s just that we haven’t heard about them yet? Judy Dench’s M and of course Miss Moneypenny are technically female agents though perhaps not quite 00’s?

Well, I can tell you what I know. Starting with "Miles Messervy 001"(the original 001, mentioned in the "James Bond 007 Role Playing In Her Majesty's Secret Service Basic Game" book. "Is now deceased") then, "Charles Basildon 001"(as seen in the "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" comic book mini-series. All they say, is that Charles Basildon is a Double-O Agent, and that he is the top agent in MI6, but his number is NOT "007". Knowing how British are, and only being able to choose from numbers "001" to "0013", which number do you think they would designate as the "Number One" agent in MI6? That's how I arrived at that. "Is presumed dead"). Then there is "Edward Donne 001"(mentioned in the James Bond novel called "Doubleshot", but I don't recall seeing the name "Edward Donne" in the novel. He is simply referred to by his code number prefix, "001". "Is currently active"). Then we have "Bill Tanner 002"(the original 002, mentioned in the "James Bond 007 Role Playing In Her Majesty's Secret Service Basic Game" book. Was promoted to "Chief of Staff"). "John Winter 002"(played by actor "Glyn Baker" as seen in "The Living Daylights" film, and the "Liquidate Bond" story from the James Bond comic strip. "Is currently active"). "Jack Mason 003"(voiced by actor "James Arnold Taylor". Jack was the original 003, as seen in the "Everything or Nothing" James Bond video game. "Deceased"), "Jason Walters 003"(supposedly, this is the name of the 003 who was found dead in the James Bond film "A View to a Kill", but I can't find where Wikipedia got that name from. It's not in the script. "Deceased"), "Aidan Flemmings 004"(played by "Frederick Warder". This was the original 004. Supposedly the name of the 004 who was assassinated in "The Living Daylights" James Bond film. There again, I can't find where Wikipedia got this name from. "Deceased"), "Scarlett Papava 004"(as seen in "The World is Not Enough" film, and mentioned in the "Devil May Care" and "The Facts of Death" James Bond novels. "Currently Active"). "Stuart Thomas 005"(the original 005, mentioned in the "Colonel Sun" James Bond novel, and as seen in the "Colonel Sun" James Bond graphic novel. "Was promoted to Head of Station G"), "Alec Trevelyan 006"(played by "Sean Bean". Alec was the original 006, as seen in the "Goldeneye" film, and mentioned in the "Goldeneye" novel. "Deceased"), "Jack Giddings 006"(portrayed by actor "Peter Roy", seated to Sean Connery's right in the "Thunderball" film. He is mentioned in "The Moneypenny Diaries: Guardian Angel" James Bond novel, presumably, this was the next "O-Agent" after Alec Trevelyan to be assigned the 006 code number prefix. "Currently Active"), "Andy Renton 006"(presumably, this is the 006 that is mentioned in the "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" novel but, there again, I don't recall seeing this name in that novel. They simply refer to him as "006", and that he was the second best Double-O Agent only to Bond at that time. So that means that this 006 might actually be the same one mentioned in the Moneypenny Diaries. The name "Andy Renton" is believed to be purely conjectural). "James Bond 007"(as seen in all forms of James Bond medium. Bond was born Nov. 11th, 1919, 1920, 1927, 1930, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1953 or 1975, depending on which James Bond timeline you prefer. Then the movies and stories simply fall into place based on what chronological order they occur in. Bond originally became a Double-O Agent in 1951, at the age of 30, with his first mission being the "Casino Royale" mission, and his final mission is believed to be "The Killing Zone" novel in 1980 at the age of 59, where Bill Tanner is murdered. Bond was a Double-O Agent for 30 years, and successfully completed over 200 missions. That's an average of 1 mission every 2 months. "Currently Active"). "Nick Fallon 008"(played by "Christopher Neame". Nick was the original 008, as seen in the "Licence to Kill" film, and mentioned in "The Living Daylights" film. "Deceased"). "Unnamed 008"(an unnamed 008 is mentioned in the "Bill Timothy 008"(as seen in the "Thunderball" film. It has been commented that he looked a little bit like "Ringo Starr" in that scene. Also seen in the 1998 "James Bond" Game Boy video game. He was mentioned in the "James Bond 007 VARGR" comic book series. One suggestion is that his name may have been "Victor Grant 008". "Deceased").

Just a thought here... so you know how every movie studio is making buttloads of "universe" films? The MCU started with Iron Man, then expanded into this huge thing were all manner of super heroes have their own stand alone adventure or backstory movies/tv series. They even tried it with the classic horror genre (but unfortunately went for big name star with Tom Cruise over having an actually well written script and that killed the whole franchise). So why not have something like this with the 00's? Presumably they're all super agents so just imagine all the killer movies you could come up with when you have eight other agents who supposedly are on par with Bond (never knew there were 4-digit "00's like 0012, etc. I thought the whole point was that their numbers were 3-digits so if you were a 00 you were among nine best agents around).

During the meeting in Thunderball, at least one of the OO agents can be seen to be a woman.
Rarely mentioned, passed over quickly, sometimes only visible in the widescreen version.
The 'double-o' prefix is sometimes implied by later spy writers to be referencing the real 'double cross' (XX) or 'twenty' committee (XX is twenty in Roman numerals) that existed during WWII.
The business of the betrayal of the Cossacks may also reference the British abandonment of the 'Chetniks' to the Soviets toward the end of WWII.

That's what the latest movie is supposed to be about. handing off the reigns to someone else

I think it would be cool to see Bond go rogue and have M send the other 00 after him. Kinda like in the Dredd movie

So most likely 007 and 008 are the best that M has, 007 is always sent on the most dangerous missions and 008 is always serving as "backup" in case of the emergency

There's also Bond turning down the Istanbul mission in Licence to Kill to go after Sanchez. Hope it wasn't too important. Also hope that Bill Timothy 008 was able to handle it and if not, Bond helped him later on.

Thanks for this post JBond007. But you forgot to mention the 00 agent who is with Bond in Austria (the movie The Living Daylights). What number is he? I couldn't remember.

Do you mean Saunders? He isn't a 00 agent, he's head of section V. He works for MI6, and acts as a contact for Bond when in Austria, like Kerim Bey in FRWL.

However, they do show two other Double-O Agents during the pre-titles sequence. The agents are: "John Winter 002"(played by actor "Glyn Baker", mentioned in the "Liquidate Bond" story in the James Bond comic strip), and "Aidan Flemmings 004"(played by actor "Frederick Warder", who is assassinated). Another Double-O Agent is mentioned in this one. "Nick Fallon 008"(the original 008) is mentioned by M, when he threatens to recall him from a mission that he is on in Hong Kong, China and reassign him to Bond's current mission. Nick Fallon 008(played by actor "Christopher Neame" is then shown in the next film "Licence to Kill" where they reveal what 008 was doing in Hong Kong in the first place. He was working with Hong Kong Narcotics Agent Specialists. He was given the assignment to intercept rogue agent: "James Bond", subdue him, and turn him over to MI6, not the S.I.S.

The Q Manual for the 007 Role Playing Game has a lot of source materials for the likes and dislikes of the various 00 agents.

I always thought that James bond name was a given name when you reached 007 status

I always thought the same...ie the top agent was given the 007 title and the name James Bond. Thus different actors being James Bond. But who knows never read the novels.

Apparently the picture of the agent Pierce brosnan shows is meant to be ex MI5 David Shayler. And wasn't one of the agents we saw in the room a woman in Thunderball?

I'm sure 008 and 009 were in one of the movies, they were wearing these "Dick Tracy" detective coats at the time. I'm sure that was them, unless I'm misremembering. I don't remember which movie that was in though.
