Also Africa is the most genetically diverse place in the world. Africans are more related to people outside of the continent than they are to each other. There's so many ethnic groups in Africa, no wonder Africa has been so slow to develop. It's hard to form centralized governments when there are such great divides in ethnicity because for some reasons groups of human beings have a hard time treating each other with dignity and respect.
It wasn't always that way. Europeans have made Africa especially during the 'mad scramble' (1800's - present) into a meat lovers pizza 🍕. Where they can divide, conquer, and strip them of their unlimited fountain of natural resources. Look what King Leopold of Belgium did to the Congo, were he got insanely rich off the death ☠️ off over 10 million ill-fated souls he coerced into chattel slavery.
If I just look at my home country (South Africa) it's amazing how much more geographically diverse it is compared to other countries. From forests, mountain, desserts, savanna, tropical areas, beaches, gorges, warm sea, cold sea the list goes on. My one country in Africa is like a world in one country, so I can just imagine how impressive the greater continent is. When family from the UK visits, they cannot believe how much more South Africa offers in such a small area from the natural beutify through to malls, houses and cities putting theirs to shame.

I believe this map discrepency comes from the scaling used, maps that show greenland as unusually large is using the Mercator projection, if you want a more accurate depition of Africa's size compared to other continents the Robinson projection does a better job, altho in the Robinson projection the closer you get to the poles the more slanted/distorted the countries look in order to try and replicate the shape of the earth... so regardless of which map projection is used, neither Mercator nor Robinson are truly accurate.
I read somewhere in the comment before that people in the past called the Africa continent as 'the dark continent' because it's so huge and very little was known about it. What animals roamed the land, what people, and what plants existed. This also inspired Mr. Yoshihiro Togashi in creating the dark continent arc in Hunter x Hunter.
The reason why so many countries fits inside of Africa is because Africa is a continent, not a country when you do this put other continents inside Africa to see how big it is
The reason for the size differences is because of something called «projection». In this instance, the maps he is referring to is called the «Mercator Projection». This map type is the most widely used one today. The size distortions are very misleading, however there is a reason for it; This map type was used for sailing. There are plenty more types of projections that focus more on depicting accurate size-ratios, but the science of projection is very tricky. You cannot depict a sphere onto a square flat area (paper) without losing some qualities.
India does have a massive population but it's not larger than Africas and while the continent as a whole is far from overpopulated, many of Africa's cities are growing at a rate that is frankly unsustainable. There's simply not enough jobs, homes, nor public services built out yet to keep up with the massive population growth ocurring in most cities around the continent.
The fact that a resource rich continent with a population of over 1 billion people has a lower gdp than a set of rainy islands in Europe with a population below 100 million 😭
Leadership is the problem but you'd be surprised that small African countries like Seychelles have low crime, unemployment and a gdp per capita of 14,000USD higher than some countries in Europe. Educate yourself and stop drowning in 14th century ignorance.

I love the part where he explains why this distortion is. For those who don't know. It needs to be distorted because it's impossible to project a 3d object, like the earth, on a plain like the map. The mercator projection, the every day map shown here. Is pretty neat because every straight line will be equal to a compass direction at any point. The trade off is ofc the distortion.

Also Africa is the most genetically diverse place in the world. Africans are more related to people outside of the continent than they are to each other. There's so many ethnic groups in Africa, no wonder Africa has been so slow to develop. If I just look at my home country (South Africa) it's amazing how much more geographically diverse it is compared to other countries.
From forests, mountain, desserts, savanna, tropical areas, beaches, gorges, warm sea, cold sea the list goes on. My one country in Africa is like a world in one country, so I can just imagine how impressive the greater continent is.
When family from the UK visits, they cannot believe how much more South Africa offers in such a small area from the natural beutify through to malls, houses and cities putting theirs to shame.

I believe this map discrepency comes from the scaling used, maps that show greenland as unusually large is using the Mercator projection, if you want a more accurate depition of Africa's size compared to other continents the Robinson projection does a better job, altho in the Robinson projection the closer you get to the poles the more slanted/distorted the countries look in order to try and replicate the shape of the earth... so regardless of which map projection is used, neither Mercator nor Robinson are truly accurate.

In this instance, the maps he is referring to is called the «Mercator Projection».
This map type is the most widely used one today. The size distortions are very misleading, however there is a reason for it; This map type was used for sailing.
There are plenty more types of projections that focus more on depicting accurate size-ratios, but the science of projection is very tricky.

It does need to be known that not all maps are like this. The map he is using is called the Mercator Projection. This map is a flat map that can be used for navigational purposes. This map has heavy amounts of distortion around the edges and it is a big box. Another map you might be more familiar with is the Robinson Projection. This will show minor amounts of distortion around the edges. However it isn't even, and it leads to a lot of curved borders that are actually straight. This projection is in an oval shape and it is the most common in classrooms.
All maps are flat, that's the point, you can't make one out of a sphere, which is why a globe exists. But we can't work with one
