Thanks for the info Harley! I guess I never associated wool with the British (I probably should have!) Are there any British companies you would recommend? Thanks for watching!
I’m pretty fortunate to live only about 45 minutes from Johnson Woolen Mills. That place is literally overwhelming when you walk in. The inventory is huge. Jackets, pants, bibs, hats, Fanny packs, back packs, mittens, gloves, blankets. Etc etc…. It’s crazy the amount of stuff in there. I have to really behave myself because I want everything and could spend a fortune. 🤦🏼♂️😂🤣
Pendleton is, and I don’t get it either, but it’s USA made FABRIC, then sent to China, other Asian countries or Central America for actual MANUFACTURING. So apparently it’s cheaper to take the USA wool, SHIP IT ALL somewhere else, pay THE OTHER COUNTRY to make it, then…PAY TO SHIP THE GARMENTS BACK….Yup, unions are great , priced themselves right out of manufacturing jobs. Couldn't agree more ! I've got mostly Johnson wool gear , had it since I was 16 (57 now) . It's all in great shape and amazingly still fits !! I'll probably fall apart long before it does .... The one thing you failed to mention , and maybe this is a personal thing , is also the smell of the wool . Whether it's dry or wet , it smells like fall , it smells like hunting season , and , that in itself evokes so many memories from when I was a kid and could smell it on my dad's gear . I couldn't wait until I was old enough to go to deer camp and be "one of the guys" ..... Such great memories . Man I love hunting season 🦌😃... My son now wears his grandfather's hunting gear ! I grew up in VT wearing 20-30 year old, redplaid hand-me-down johnson wool. Boy, did i look awful. Still wear wool on particular days, but i took a chance on some clothing from kuiu and it's left me pretty impressed. Every day is different out in the bigwoods and i try to dress accordingly. Very informative video, thank you for sharing!
I also have kuiu brand stuff I bought in preparation for a hunt in Montana. The past few seasons I have been wearing my kuiu pants and a johnson woolen mills half zip shirt in the Adirondacks, and I'm hooked on wool now.
Great video. I have so much wool definitely my only hunting gear I use. I have so much Johnson , and Woolrich! Clothing. Sorry to see Woolrich go by wayside! Have my older Maine wool coat my wife bought me for Christmas years ago great coat but out grew size. Bought a new one but never was crazy about sizing . Finally figured out way to use it but not really the quality. Found another great wool company this year Stormy Kromier nice stuff.
Nice Robert! My first wool jacket was Woolrich it was good stuff back then…but like most companies, the quality has gone down the drain. Thanks for watching!
Great video. I wear wool for hunting and all winter long. I agree filson an Johnson mills are hard to beat. I recently got some big bill pants and they're pretty close for half the money. They've worked so far but time will tell.
I expanded out of my LL Bean wool jacket. Just ordered one from Big Woods Bucks. I've been wearing King of the Mountain wool pants for about 15 years or so. Great pant, double fabric in the knees. They're showing a little wear but I should get another 5 or more years.
Nice Charlie! Let me know what you think of the Big Woods Bucks wool...I'd be interested. 15-20 yrs out of a wool pant is pretty impressive. Thanks or watching!
I agree, filson, Johnson, and Pendleton are great companies. Very sad to see companies go in the wrong direction on the quality of products. I believe in the end they will pay the price.
Thanks for your great explanation of current (and old) wool products! It’s been frustrating finding anything of quality locally here in midcoast maine. We just got back from a trip to Scotland where wool is king!! I only came back with a nice cap as i didnt have the time to shop much. My question- As a hiker/backpacker i have been slowly transitioning to Merino for undergarments and synthetics for over garments… mostly for moisture control. Does your type of hunting mostly involve stalking/ walking or do you find wool to be suitable for ling sits? Thanks in advance
Hey Ben! Lucky!…I’d love to visit Scotland. Ben, I use it all the time no matter the type of hunting I am doing. I just layer accordingly. I do mostly tracking/stalking. Glad you found the info helpful. Good luck!
I and a lot of guys in my area (south/central Indiana) are going to wool. What do you do for sent control? Does dry cleaning leave a chemical smell? Will sent control sprays like H.S. Strut or Dead Down Wind and others damage or lessen the performance of wool?
Nice to hear about the interest in wool! One of the biggest reasons I use wool is it naturally helps control sent. I don’t use any form a sent control beyond wool itself. As far as cleaning goes, it’s pretty much self cleaning. Dirt and debris is shed pretty easy once it dries. Finer wool garments like dress pants and what not I do dry clean, but not my hunting wool.
I have the same green filson wool vest and matching double Mack. They are both over 20 years old and still look brand new. Its gotta be pretty darn cold to break out the double Mack cause its just so heavy, but my vest: its not hunting and spring fishing season without out. I wear it from October to April. I have also have the matching bibs but they are just like the double Mack: overkill unless its brutal cold out. Wish I would have bought the pants like you have instead.
That’s a good question. And to be honest, I really don’t wash most of my wool. Wool shirts I will have dry cleaned. But all outerwear I spot clean and that’s about it. Some of my older wool pants I have soaked in water, then allowed them to air dry (but that’s only items I’m not too worried about ruining). I won’t dry clean my wool outerwear. I feel, for the most part wool is pretty much “self-cleaning”.
Hi Aaron! I wipe it off when it’s fresh(usually with snow). Wool is pretty good at naturally shedding dirt, debris and is stain resistant. It’s not like other fabrics that absorb liquids easily. As long as the wool doesn’t become “overwhelmed” with a liquid...it wipes off pretty easy.
I agree with the lack of quality from a Maine company over the last few years. Johnson Woolen Mills is great quality. Two other sources for well made wool products are Stormy Kromer and Asbell… With Asbell the products are a bit less refined from a fashion standpoint but are amazingly functional.
Thanks for the info Sean! I forget about stormy kromer. I’ll have to check out Asbell...I’ll take function over aesthetics any day. Thanks for watching!

Hi Nick. Wool I wear close to the skin (merino base layers and the such) I wash according to the manufacturers specs which is usually just in the washing machine. More exterior clothing such as jackets and pants require more unique care such as dry clean only and what not. Some say you can wash it with no problems...however, I don't wash my exterior garments. I like to refer to wool as "self cleaning". Wool is pretty stain resistant, doesn't really retain odors. It pretty much takes care of itself.
