How to burnish leather edges in less than 5 minutes? Some leathercraft secrets shared.

- I've been asked again how I burnish my edges. Well, it's not easy because I change it all the time.
But most recently, I've been trying to sand with less different grits of sanding paper. Instead, I tried sanding while the leather is wet. I did it by mistake once with Tokonole and the result was good.
So I decided to try those steps (works on veg-tanned and latigo leathers):
- sand with a 300/500 grit
- wet the leather and sand again
- when the leather feels smooths, stop
- sand with a 800/1000 grit
- wet the leather and sand again
- when the leather feels smooth, stop
- sand with a 1500 to 2000 grit
- wet the leather and sand again
- bevel your edges
At this stage the leather could already be a bit shiny.
- use pure @Tokonole or soft bees wax and burnish with a cotton fabric or denim.
- (even after Tokonole, I apply a small amount of bees wax to nourish the leather)
This should get you shiny and strong edges.
I usually do all that after a trimming if I can, and after I stitched for a cleaner result.
And you, what's your technique?
Happy crafting!
Geoffrey

Holy moly look at that shine
Ha ha 😁 thank you so much 🥰
You are a true Egdelord!
I love the surname 😁😂❤️
Lovely
Thank you 🥰
Оч красиво и наглядно
What ratio of tokonole to water did you use while sanding? Love your work!
Thank you so much 🥰 I used 50/50. But I'm going slowly toward 60% water 40% Tokonole.
Is that what you fill the marker with? And where do you get those empty markers?@@LordLeatherCraft
@@mydearriley 👋. Yes it's Tokonole that you can find here tidd.ly/3XLq0l3 and the pen you can find on most craft shop or here Amazon: amzn.to/3qens2d
Or Etsy: tidd.ly/3oD1iq0
More info on my guides at lord.crofte.fr 💕
Wow, thank you for the information! And then you use the mix of the water:tokonole in the pen?@@LordLeatherCraft
@@mydearriley exactly 👌 you got it. 😊 My pleasure. Enjoy your craft
What about using Edge Kote? 🤔. Because i dont have Tokonole
This is a video about finishing edges with a technique using Tokonole. I don't know Edge Kote, but most of the first steps are the same for veg-tan leather: you need a flat surface to be able to work properly with any kind of coating material. Edge coat usually requires one first layer, a bit of sanding, and at least a second generous second layer of coating.
@@LordLeatherCraft Thanks
Is this vegetable or chrome taned leather??
This is veg-tan leather. 😊
This process works for latigo leather too. And a friend of mine uses 4 other grit level for chrome tan leather and made it work, but the result is way less shiny. For chrome-tan leather I would go for paint 😁
How can i get all dis suff u use for burnishing
You can find most of them on that guide shop.crofte.fr/create-leather-belt-beginner-guide the only thing missing is the empty pump pen that you can find here amzn.to/3L3soxG
Pueblo leather, right? ❤
Exactly 👍
@@LordLeatherCrafti love them and your work, tks for sharing 🙏
@@o_kia_anh_ban thank you. Really appreciated 😍🥰
Do you bevel at all?
Excellent question! Usually before 900 grit or before even starting sanding 😊👌
Can I use 100 grit for the first part
Yes of course. It really depends on the initial state of your edges. Sometimes I start with 1000 grit immediately because I used trim allowance or the edges are perfectly aligned.
А с хромкой подобное сможете показать?
Unfortunately this works less well with Chrome tanned leather. But I can share an example of a details process with Chrome tanned that I use dye on it. If you browse my other Shorts, you'll see me do that with less detailed steps.
Цена такого изделия стоит ?
Hello, this one was 132€ delivery for the US included. It depends on the country of delivery. FYI I don't deliver in some countries.
Это он грунтом постоянно покрывал и потом шлифовал?
Yes the idea is to break the fiber with sanding paper, then burnish with Tokonole to link the fibers together. Using smaller and smaller grain helps get thinner defects on the edges, but also helps strengthen the edges.
whats a tokonole?
It's the brand of the burnishing product I use. You can find more info in the guides of tools I use here if you want: shop.crofte.fr/
leather used?
Sorry I didn't see your comment before now. I use Pueblo Leather from Badalassi Carlo tannery. You can find it there: buyleatheronline.com (use the coupon LORD7 for a small discount)
What do you use to apply tokonole?
I use a paint pen with a small tank where I put 50/50 water dans Tokonole. Amazon: amzn.to/3qens2d
or Etsy: tidd.ly/3oD1iq0 have them.
@LordLeatherCraft that looked so useful! Fabulous job!!!
@@brennen7819thank you so much for your feedback 🥰

I use Pueblo Leather, and for the rest it's several grain of sanding paper and Tokonole for the white product I apply on the edges. You'll find some of the tools I use there: shop.crofte.fr in the Guides section.
it just work on veg tan leathers!
Hello. No, it works also on latigo leather. But the info is in the description of the video 😊
