I Hand Stitched 2,000 Leather Wallets, Here’s What I Learned… - From Pony to Ferrari

  • The stitching pony may be the most crucial part of hand stitching.
In this video, I walk you through my evolution of 5 stitching ponies. Starting with "rubbish" and ending with the "Ferrari".
As mentioned in the video, regarding stitching "ponies", there are tons of different styles, sizes, etc. There is no "right or wrong". It's all a matter of personal preference. This video highlights my preferences and the justification for each.

Thanks for your passion! My pony was made by my close friend who passed 2 yrs ago. Each day I use it I'm smiling to him. It's a chair + pony combined made of 100+ wood.

Just got into leather working and I was looking to make a stitching pony and came across this video. First off, thank you for sharing your process, looks like you've put a lot of practical use thought into your designs. I was wondering though, what you're looking for is inward pressure to hold the piece while you stitch, what if you had a spring applying that inward pressure attached to a bolt and you could just push the pony open to adjust your piece. Make a cover for it so string doesn't get tangled and so you can adjust the tension. Kind of the opposite idea of the spring that's present on your Ferrari.

I've learnt new swear words using my Amazon stitching pony! I've got to forego making a leather project and make myself a proper stitching pony instead.
Great video as usual Art, keep spreading the love 👍

Been eye balling your clamps since I started watching forever ago. Currently overseas but can wait to build my own Clydesdale. Thanks for the tip and the explanations. You continue to inspire the leatherworking community with your work and craftsmanship. I know watching you has made me a better leatherworker. Thank you for all you do!

I didn’t know I wanted to know what I now know about stitching ponies - another great and useful video. Now to go modify my mini-pony I seldom use as I’m an “air-stitcher” 😂

The next version should be able to change out the leather jaws with a recessed bolt with the nut glued into the frame. Go from 8" jaws to 6" and down to 4" for whatever you need. Make the foot rest hollow to put the extra jaws into while not in use. Name it the Corvette convertible since the jaws can be converted to different sizes. Slide them down onto the arms and slide the bolt in and secure. I thought about a thumb screw, but your thread WILL catch on everything. I can see it in my head, but it is strange trying to get it in writing.

I watch and learn from ur videos so much that all my projects look like you made them. Lol I sit on my bed Indian style with the bottom bar of my stitching pony going under my right thigh- I found this to be super comfortable and it works very well.

I've made 5 stitching ponies because it's a fun woodworking project. But I never use them, they're just slowing me down. It's way faster to stitch without one, just have follow to a specific technique. I can't remember his name right now, the guy who used to be sponsored by weaver and now buckleguy? He has a video.

Stitching pony is super over rated in my opinion. I know they can be useful but I leaned to stitch without them so they kinda just get in my way. But I do realize most people find them useful. That's also cool you made your own.
