- Mercedes’ decision to call-up George Russell to fill-in for Lewis Hamilton at the Sakhir GP gives it an opportunity to evaluate a potential star of the future in a live environment on an F1 weekend. In this video Scott Mitchell explains why Mercedes had to take that opportunity, rather than handing the seat to reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, and we look ahead to how Russell will really be judged against Valtteri Bottas, beyond pure results

George Russel will be the only F1 driver to race the fastest and slowest cars in a championship in one year and at the same venue.
Not necessarily as Haas and Alfa Romeo have been outright slower than Williams on quite a few tracks this year, so not as clear-cut as last season. The order of these three teams has changed quite interchangeably.
But not the same track configuration!

Russell's performance was mediocre at best he did a good job in Q1 and 2 then dropped the ball on race day he didn't get no P1 like everyone hyped him up to do even in the "best car" he couldn't handle the pressure now all I hear is crickets

A nightmare and dream come true for Russel it seems. The insane pressure of moving to the most powerful car with a one-shot chance to prove oneself, he better have nerves of tungsten.

He's raced on both ends of the spectrum. He's raced in the worst machinery (Williams 2019) and will get a taste of the best (Mercedes 2020).

George has never really been tested in quality machinery against a tough competitor so this weekend will be very telling. It doesn't matter how badly he does as that will be explained away and excused by the Hamilton hating closet racists who under no circumstances will acknowledge what a good job Lewis does in that car.
@@justkaz7104 It would not be completely unreasonable to have such expectations, though perhaps this will be a test to see if the car really is a hand-held as it can seem, and if the driver can take advantage of that equipment when under an arguably more stressful environment.

@@niuean3000 did you.... watch the race? He had 3 extra stops and NONE of them were his fault. 2 were pitcrews fault and the last was a puncture. In no way was he at fault and he clawed through so many people in the dyimg laps despite the win that was ripped from him

It can’t ever happen of course, big teams would not want drivers from other teams finding out their performance secrets and strategies.
But it would be great fun for us.
I had the same idea and suggested it too:That the drivers rotate and driver for all the teams. I know there are some logistical problems that would have to be dealt with, but to me it is the way forward.

However, there is zero money paid out to the WDC. So why would a constructor want any but the best drivers they can get into their cars? Constructors have to sign off on almost all FIA rule books. So this would never happen. In a different series with the same drivers though.... IROC
@@Rasscasse the drivers aren’t accustomed to each other’s cars. We wouldn’t really see them at 100% if they swapped for a single race, even with a week of practice or whatever.
I am so glad George is getting this chance, he really deserves it, after seeing what he's been able to do with the Williams car, it's clear that he is a very talented driver...

George is the only sensible option, he being the most current and up-to-date Mercedes powered driver that has been racing in F1 in 2020. I hope he does well, I hope he does exceedingly well.

Indeed, and the thing is. Russel obviously will get his chance in in the future, he is young enough and will almost certainly go to mercedes in the next couple years. Stoffel never got the chance to race in a competitive F1 car, and had one of the greatest drivers of the last 20 years as a teammate/rival. If he had to go against Latifi for example...
I've never thought of the Russel option but it is an excellent choice. That said, I would never gone for Stoffel. I'd always pick a junior at this point. When Hamilton tested positive my bet was to put de Vries in the car.
Imagine the twist was that Hamilton doesn’t have COVID and Toto planned this to test George as a free hit😂

Russell exposed f1 for what it is. Toto Wolf couldn't have him winning in Hamilton's car so screwed him twice. Firstly with the calamity pit stop and then telling him he had a puncture when he didn't. He then come on TV acting that he was angry and swore. But that was just to cover that they screwed out of the win to save Hamilton's now crumbling reputation. Lewis is an average driver who just won titles in the best car. When his car was average he was nowhere. Put Russeell alongside him next year and he will smoke him, as Hamilton in mentally fragile.
I've heard people say their grandma could win in that car, I'm glad we get to put that theory to test
It's not really easy to win a race by just hopping on to a new car. One needs time to adjust.
err, no mate, Russel has an impressive CV prior to F1 and has never yet been outqualified, so we have a good shootout on our hands. Bottas will have pressure to keep his drive too.

Hamilton jumped into a McLaren from GP2 and was superb right off the bat. If it’s only about the car then Russell should be able to do the same given he’s own touted ability.

You dont have to win a championship to be a talented driver. Everyones development is different and like F1 there are strong and weak teams in F2 based on budget which doesn't always do justice for measuring a drivers talent.

I just hope he gets in the car and shows the world the advantage Lewis had in his team .... if he leads and/or overtakes like Lewis it will prove my suspicions that the Team is keystone to Lewis’s titles.... if not, well it could be anything from a badly fitted cockpit to unfamiliarity with the setup . If botas gets beat by Russell he definitely has a problem.
If Bottas gets beat by Russell I reckon he can definitely kiss the Mercedes seat goodbye in 2022 . The one achilles heel with the Merc car though , as seen in some races this season , is that it's not immortal when it's in traffic because it seems totally designed on the assumption that Lewis is either 1st or 2nd and also I think is the biggest chassis on the grid . So as daft as it sounds , if Russell doesn't get a top two finish he may struggle to get on the podium in third . If he finishes the race though he should almost certainly get his first points .

@@Argos35D I’ve seen Hamilton go through the pack on many occasions this season. Botas just does t have the race raft imo, he’s an exceptional driver, no doubt, but still not on par with Lewis. I’m not a fan of Lewis btw but he is undoubtedly the best F1 driver of his era.
I’m sure MB can dial down George’s engine power to avoid any embarrassment to Bottas.
Hope he does well. He's a good driver, and with that car he will definitely get in the points.

When Russell doesn't win can we all just agree that it's not "all the car" and that Lewis is actually a pretty decent driver

My honest opinion is that we would see Luca Badoer levels of performance from Vandoorne and that's probably why Mercedes has gone for Russell.
He knew it would not get a second seat at the team any time soon, Toto talked about Russel many times, as a future World Champion

I feel he would do better than Luca Badoer.
Vandoorne is a great racer (splitting the techeetah in Formula E ) and has shown some racecraft.
His F1 story was not great but was massively fucked by Fernando being Fernando (Fast Racing driver, not the best team player.. i believe i don't need examples for that) and that horrible Mclaren on which he got almost no upgrades.
I think he would be able to make something happen in the Merc. However the adjustment back into F1 might hamper him a bit, especially compared to Russel who is already in F1.
Will be very exciting and will be watching the practise sessions on Formula 1 TV channel tomorrow to see how Russell gets on.

As much as Hulk coming in and getting his first ever podium would be a great story, this scenario is much tastier and ultimately has much longer term consequences.
I guess it's a very bad track layout to gauge driver skill, but great opportunity for him anyway
There's a lot of different skills though, tire management being a big one with a lot of nuances. I agree that there would be more exciting tracks racing wise for this opportunity, though.
I think the race will come down to raw speed which the merc obviously has and tire management... Sub 1 min lap times are a possibiity apparently... So yeah this race is going to be amaaazing
i became a russell fan after this race, man didnt even know the settings and buttons on his steering wheel but was ready to crack on and give it his best, even after team mistakes he just wanted to drive his heart out, i was gutted for him

This is his breakthrough moment,
Russel started 2nd. Led the most laps. But unfortunately Mercedes made a mistake at his pit stops. They apparently put a Incorrect set of Tires on his car. It was made WORSE. When he had to stop for a puncture. He ended up finishing 9th his first points finish.
He didn't even have a puncture. They made it up because again, they didn't want him winning
Best choice they could make, can’t wait to see what this young man can do. Go and get them George.

I do not think it was a puncture so it must be that for George a strange pretext that he was punctured to the tail it shows he was very fast than Valtteri Bottas so they must not do or else because they do not want face and for Valtteri Bottas therefore George Russell had to come in and have a pit stop even if it was not necessary

We all dreamed this into existence. I couldn't belive it when I heard it from a friend, it has been a long time since I was this stoked for something I don't have any real personal stake in. Poor lad must be pissing hiumself in a mixture of glee, excitement and unfathomable performance anxiety... Give it the best shot you possibly can, but please always include a 2-5 % safety margin in anything you do. That means no more spinning yourself into the wall while cruising behind the safety car, my dude. Wishing George the best luck in the world to supplement his great talent!

There is one driver, and only one driver, on the F1 grid that could replace Hamilton right now, and he has a long term Red Bull deal. Nothing George does, or doesn’t do, this weekend will effect Hamilton’s contract in the slightest. The idea that Mercedes would let Lewis walk, and not have the prestige of locking up an 8th title and 100 poles/wins with him next year borders on the completely absurd.

While I don't want to downplay Russel's driving skill, him beating Bottas just shows how powerful the Merc is. And that shows that LH44 has a big car advantage, which leads to his wins more than often...
Wrong lewis setup is better . He is come from far with mercedes . You think it is only the car that is fast ? Mclaren was also a middle car but lewis did it like what verstappen did with red bull . then you never know how f1 works . D
