      After waiting 40 years for a Python, I finally got one and.....hated it. Recoil was so bad that I could not finished the cylinder. Traded it for a GP100 and can shoot full magnums all day long. The Python looks great, though!

      @@Zona-dw9rp Sure, the weight difference between a GP100 and Python is so great that the Python's recoil is just terrible to shoot in comparison to a Ruger. At the range I always see a pile of miserable Pythons that guys have discarded so they will have room for another Ruger in their range bag.

      If going for the Python I strongly suggest the 6” barrel. It’s a big beefy revolver with the 4.5” or the 6” but the difference in recoil and shoot ability is dramatic as the 6” really mitigates muzzle flip much better.

  • @PPISAFETY
    @PPISAFETY ปีที่แล้ว +64

    I'm an old fart, so the reintroduction of the Python makes me smile. I remember my first Python, which was a six inch blued model, for which I paid $175 used. It was a great gun, as have been all the other ones that followed over the years. The last one I bought was a 4 inch stainless steel version, which I carried as a duty gun for a while. There was also a very cool "little brother" to the Python, called the Diamondback, which was made in .38 Special and .22 LR. It was on the Colt D frame, same as the Detective Special, but with a four inch barrel. It had a vent rib just like the Python. Nowadays if you can find a Diamondback, especially in .22, you will pay used car money to buy it.
    Back in the day, the Python was the "Supermodel" of revolvers. It was built almost completely by hand and polished by craftsmen who all had to have at least ten years on the job before they were allowed to touch a Python. But, just like dating a supermodel, you had to pay for the privilege. It was always sold for about 50 percent more than the closest equivalent Smith and Wesson. The hand-fitted action locked up tighter than a bank vault, but if you used it hard in double action, as the PPC guys did, it would go out of time. You pretty much had to figure on having it re-timed after every season or two. A lot of us had to put match barrels on our Smiths to win, but not so with the Python. I think this was probably due to the tiny amount of muzzle constriction built into the Python. As S&W began to establish dominance in the revolver market, there were fewer and fewer gunsmiths who knew how to work on Pythons. The Python has always had "stacking" at the end of the DA trigger, but there were one or two wizards who knew how to remove this. If you competed with the Python, you sent your gun to them. PPC shooters, who had to achieve pinpoint accuracy at 50 yards double action, either shot Colt or shot S&W, but not both, due to the differences in cylinder rotation, cylinder release latch opening, and the feel of the DA trigger.
    I like the new Python a lot, and think it is worth the extra money if you want a "supermodel" revolver. If you want a regular "girlfriend", buy a 686 and save yourself $600, or even more on a used Smith or Ruger. Bill Wilson, who owns one of the largest collection of original Pythons in the world says that he thinks that in many ways the new Python is better than the original as a shooter, except for the rear sight. He complains that Colt has gone with a cheaper rear sight that doesn't hold zero, rather than the original Accro rear. He is naturally selling a replacement unit through Wilson Combat. I want one of these Pythons, but haven't decided whether I want the 6 inch, the 4 inch, or the newly introduced 3 inch model.

    The 686 will be my first revolver. I watched some videos of it with shorter barrels, and they do surprisingly well in long range accuracy. Some even say they shoot almost a well as the 6".

    • @bobjohnson1633
      @bobjohnson1633 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I argue that the 4" 686+ is the single most superior handgun ever made. Anything on earth that you would need it for, it basically does, even if not very well. Nothing it does poorly. Many things it does great.
      The accuracy difference with longer or shorter barrel guns like this is entirely due to having a longer sight radius or having lower velocity out of shorter barrels, causing more bullet drop at range and less more wind deflection.

    I have a few of the OG Pythons and my son recently purchased a new 4" unit. I have to say, these new ones are better made and just as smooth. Also, very accurate. We'll see if it holds up better than the older guns. My oldest one has had the springs replaced on it due to reliability issues. But, it had a lot of rounds through it before any problems. My only complaint about the new ones (so far) is the shiny finish. Would much rather have a matte finish.

    This gun always had a cool factor about it. Growing up in France in the 70's and 80's, one could see it in American productions Starsky and Hutch and Magnum Force. But also in numerous French productions. There was even a French police movie named after it, starring Yves Montand: "Police Python 357". It was also the revolver of choice of Jean-Paul Belmondo in a number of police movies he starred in. And Claude Brasseur too used it when playing a police commissioner in "La Crime" and "The Police War". On the latter, the gun was figuring prominently on the film poster. All great movies, by the way.

    The Python was the first handgun I ever fired way back when I was 10 years old. Will always have fond memories of them. That said, the grip of the new generation feels cheap and thinner than the original. The sights are a pain to change. I do like that you can dry fire the new ones. Colt (or CZ) should have incorporated a option for optics.

    • @emello4you

      The older grips felt great and looked great, were wider even. Had shiny beautiful finish. But were made of much liter, weaker material. I had a pair recently I payed a whopping $225 for and a piece already chipped off of the back. Made me very angry. And I bought 2 pairs too! Luckily it hasn't happened to the other one yet. I've had altamont grips of various kinds for over 10 years and they've never come close to doing that. The grips that come on these guns are way stronger and heaver, made of much better material and a stronger finish. The Altamont grips that came on my Pythons weigh 120 grams (over 4 oz). The classic ones I bought from deerhollowonline are thicker and weigh a crazy 52 grams (1.8 oz)!! That's crazy!! But they were so nice looking that, when I got them, I kinda looked past it. Until recently when just from lightly taking them off, a piece chips off from the back. Now I just use them as target grips at the range. I now have a much more appreciation for the Altamont grips sturdy, heavy build and strong finish. My 686 snub nose, model 66, several 629 variants and model 29's, my Anacondas, all have Altamont, and never, have they even come close to anything chipping away. And I'm talking a piece of the wood, not just the finish. They're very lite weight and that worried me from the start when I first held them. Definately don't recommend them for heavy use. Hell I wouldn't buy em at all, not for that price. Beautiful, but cheap and weak.

    The Colt Python is one of the most beautiful revolvers, especially the 6 inch royal blue version.
    However, I always thought the lockwork of the original Pythons was always somewhat fragile and could lead to timing problems if you shot a heavy diet of Magnum loads, or shot a lot in competition.
    I heard that Colt has redesigned and beefed up the lockwork on the new release 2020 versions.
    I'm personally more of a S&W N-frame guy.

  • @doranmaxwell1755
    @doranmaxwell1755 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Mine is a 1969 maybe 70 blue 6" It is of course gorgeous. I think that finish is what cost so much because of the hours of hand labor. At the time you could get a K frame Smith (model 19) for a lot less than the Python and I have a few. Great guns but true or not the smaller frame did not seem to handle full house .357 mag ammo as a steady diet. Many stuck with the N frame .357 which was also their 44 mag gun. A lot of gun games/sports were thriving at the time all 'tacticool' before tacticool was a thing they usually had 'police' in the title. Except one noteable exception... it was more handgun hunting oriented shooting steel animal shaped targets at ranges out to 300 yards 44 mag would knock em down reliably While the .357 did so with really nasty potent loads... This really put a strain on guns as I recall.. Dan wesson went his own way and for all intents and purposes their .357 if a Python frame size with underlugs and ribs and Python hammer... a few years later... Smith comes up with the 686 same deal but even more Python like. The looks have something to do with it also as you say... The Python is iconic ... next to the 1911 and the Luger? it is the most popular movie/TV guns Ok... the way old Pythons lock up.. Rapid fire DA is a tad hard on the hand mechanism... a trigger stop would have probly fixed that but why? I probly only have 3k? full house loads through mine? But they are mostly slow DA or SA... I don't think you could ever hurt the gun doing that. If I did not have the original I would likely buy the new Python.. but the old one is...... Gorgeous! did I mention that before? LOL
