    My grandfather was a serious gun collector and he bought 2 Colt Pythons back in the early 60's... a 4 inch that went straight into his safe only being pulled out periodically so he could oil and clean it and a 6 inch that he shot all the time. I inherited both of them and I couldn't bring myself to shoot the 4 inch model so I bought a new 4 inch to shoot and I still have an early 60's model Python that's in perfect shape and never been fired... The 6 inch model was the very 1st handgun I ever shot and was what really got me into guns at a pretty young age.

    The new Python is awesome, but its one weakness is the rear sight. The windage shift you are seeing is most likely isn't you but due to the windage slipping. To adjust, the microscopic windage set screw (which is near impossible to replace, so don't lose it) has to be released before you can change the windage, then you have to lock it back down. Be sure to use PURPLE (not blue - it's too strong) Loctite on the windage set screw to keep it in place or it will wiggle out and be gone. Wilson Combat just released a new replacement rear sight that hopefully addresses the biggest flaw in this otherwise phenominal revolver.

  • @robertseafield5810
    @robertseafield5810 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As you noticed, the Python was made to be fired with one hand. In 1955, most people were using a 38 Special revolver for the National Match course. The Python was meant to be a deluxe target revolver. The original had a tapered bore in the specially made barrel. Lead bullets as used in wadcutter form are very accurate.
    I bought a six inch blued Python in 1975 for $250.00. Used it for many years. with no problems. I was advised by my gunsmith to mostly use the single action. Using a Handloaded gas checked 158 gr cast bullet at 1000 fps, I learned to plink soda cans at 100 yards. Great fun.
    Great video. The Python takes a bit of getting used to. Once you learn it, you will like it. Concerning loading, get belt loops. Load two at a time, old school. You can get very fast at it.

    The old Colt Pythons would get timing issues if you shot them alot, that is why I believe they changed the trigger linkage.

    • @dirkwickline4528
      @dirkwickline4528 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Two big changes, the cylinder stop is now trigger actuated like s&w instead of being tied to the rebound lever on the old python. The other change was they removed the hammer rebound and hammer block system and went to a transfer bar system similar to the Mark III Colt's.
      Interesting this is the first I've heard anyone say the New Double Action is worse than an original.
      I've handled several dozen originals and nearly a dozen of the new one 2020 ones. The DA is very close on every example I've tried. But the Single action is definitely heavier on the new ones.

    Years ago, the Colt revolvers were always noted for their superior light single action pull used for Bullseye competitions. However for PPC Police Combat competitions the S&W line of revolvers had a superior Double Action trigger. The Colts D/A trigger even the (Python) had a "stacking" D/A pull which increased resistance up until the end of the pull just before the hammer fell. This increase in trigger pressure, would result in more movement distubing sight alignment. Where as the S&W revolvers had a smooth pull with the same pressure all the way to completion of the stroke.

    Old Pythons had timing problems. Didn't take much to mess them up. The new models don't seem to be prone to that. Hand fitting wasn't exclusive to Colt. But one thing can't be criticized. It's really nice looking.

      @@FirstLast-gv1zl wrote "when you looked at the line at any PPC competition in its heyday, 95%+ were S&Ws." That is because the S&W was significantly cheaper, and many competitors wanted an action job done. Your local gunsmith cannot do an action job on a Python without screwing up the timing. Indeed, all the good gunsmiths in my area refused to do an action job on a Python, for that reason (yes, you could find a butcher who would do it, but that never ended well). As for "milking" the trigger to the point where the timing locks -- that is all a matter of how you train. I used a Python for years in PPC, and was taught to use a full steady smooth pull all the way rather than to milk the trigger. Shot great with it. Oh, and I suppose the Pythons were so inaccurate that is why many PPC shooters put the Python barrel on a S&W frame to make the Smython?

    For more "recent" generations, the walking dead is the show that made the Colt Python an icon. For those of us that were born in the (late) 1960s, "TJ Hooker" starring William Shatner (yep, that one...) is show that made the python an icon.

    I wanted an original Python but they were so expensive. When Colt released the 2020 Python for $1,500 MSRP, I was pretty excited. But then the reviews came out and there were some unfortunate QC issues with these pistols. Also, it was impossible to find one under $2,000.
    Hopefully things are worked out now because I’d still like one. Would go nicely with my 1988 King Cobra

    The ORIGINAL PYTHON (blued) is GORGEOUS. Years ago I wanted one but even years ago (20-30 years) they were EXPENSIVE, so I gave up that idea. About 7-8 years ago (time seems to get away from me, I turned 70) 😯😞😮‍💨, I was VERY FORTUNATE to get a Colt Pre-Python for $625. It looks like a old Colt Trooper. It's called a Colt 3-5-7 (yes 357 magnum) but its Colt's FIRST 357 BEFORE the Python. They made it from 1953-1961, only 15,000 produced between 4"-6" barrel. Mine is a 6" and made in 1955. The FIRST time I shot it was 25' at a 1" red dot with Blazer Brass 125gr FMJ at my favorite indoor range. Two handed with that ammo I put 3shots across the dot, one 1/2" high right other 3/4" low to the left which I thought was PRETTY GOOD for the first time shooting it. But then I crouched down to use the shelf where you put your stuff while shooting to help steady my shots (certainly not quite bench resting) I made ONE HOLE, ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE ONLY 3 SHOTS NOT 5. I said this is a KEEPER. I wish you could shoot this pistol, you would LOVE the double and single action. I think you would agree that the action is BUTTERY SMOOTH, not like any other pistol. "FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS". I was VERY FORTUNATE to SEE and HEAR him at the 2000 NRA CONVENTION in Charlotte, NC. I was in the 3rd row and got within a couple of feet from Col. Oliver North which was COOL I thought. I don't know where are which is cool and I seriously think I will go anywhere where near where you live but I'm CURIOUS what you think about my COLT 3-5-7. 🤔🤗😁👍. I ENJOY ALL YOUR VIDEOS BECAUSE I'M IMPRESSED WITH YOUR SHOOTING SKILLS. I've not had ANY FORMAL TRAINING, just picked up shooting a 9mm Luger when I was 12. It belonged to my older brother 16years old in 1964. You could buy one for $100 then, shot his $40 P38. 🤗😁👍. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DUDE 👍

    I have an original 6-in stainless python I paid $400 for about 40 years ago. It was used but still under warranty. I sent it back to Colt twice to be re-timed. The python uses the hand to hold against the bolt to keep the cylinder still during firing. This is okay for 38 Special but a steady diet of 357 will result in it shaving lead in a few thousand rounds. Since the warranty expired I only shoot 38 Special with this revolver.
    By the way the back strap on The Originals was not smooth. They had Groove running from the top to the bottom. That being said mine wears Pachmeyer grippers. They are a big improvement over the original stocks.

I was never able to get either one of them repaired. I sold one to a friend with the understanding it was out of time . He claimed he could get it fixed. Two years later he was still trying to get it fixed. Local gunsmiths could not repair the gun. He sent it back to the factory twice. It worked for a few hundred rounds and then got out of time again. He finally sold it out of frustration. I will say the older ones have bluing to die for. That finish is unmatched by any other manufacturer

    I am a S&W guy and collect them as shooters, and objects of Art in Steel. My experience with 2020 Pythons vs. 60's or70's models are different from yours. The 2020 Pythons have a MUCH better DA pull than do any of the older ones except perhaps the ones tuned by the best Python mechanics, and even then the 2020's are likely better; lighter, shorter and NO stacking at all from the factory. The 2020 Pythons also have a horrendous SA pull from the factory because a a California drop safety requirement. The SA sear actually has a ridge on it that must be overcome to release. My 2020 Python was tuned by Mike Heffron and has the best non stacking DA pull of any gun I have ever fired or owned and the SA pull is now the equal of a GOOD S&W, which as any Revolver guy knows is high praise indeed. The new Python is made of superbly tough and hard steel, the equivalent of Korth or Manuhrin. You can feel that surface hardness in the gun which sounds funny but experienced guys know what I mean. Colt redesigned the bolt stop to stay in lock up better, and is now essentially a S&W copy; a good idea. The new frame is beefier. The new rear sights are unforgivably bad on this new Python; throw them away and get a new Wilson Combat copy of the Eliason, because it is SUPERB. This is the only 357 I now enjoy shooting more than my tuned S&W M-28 Highway Patrolman. Sorry for the length but this is my best review of the 2020 Pythons best and worst points....Overall; it's a go.
