I've got a 90 series Prado and absolutely love it. 1998, 3.4L V6 Petty, auto, GXL. Picked it up for 6k about 4 months ago with 280k on the clock. Well maintained, service history, no paint fade/peeling. I removed the 3rd row seats and added rear drawers, fridge/freezer, 2nd battery, awning and a roof basket. Perfect setup for my solo adventures

Same mate ive also got the 3.4L petty manual tho also got mine for 6k but had to spend another 4k to fix a few things but she goes amazing of road havent had an issue got 384k on the clock
After numerous Turbo Diesels I went with V6 4.0L PETROL HiLux on my mechanics advice. He has one with nearly 500,000 Klms no issues. I love my Petrol twin cab. So cheap to run because no expensive diesel sensors etc causing problems. Filters, Oil and fluid changes and that’s it! Bonus is so smooth and quiet. We run the 4.0 as a generator when camping to top up off grid batteries. No diesel stink in the camp either. I love it. Sensibly driven I get 11 to 12 L/100 no worries. 18 towing 2.5 ton. On 91 or 95 whatever’s cheapest.
I've got a 3 door 90 series Prado with the 3RZ petrol engine, 5 speed manual transmission. 210.000km and still running as new. Has never left me down. Once I got 2 spark plugs wet and still managed to get home with just two cylinders working.
Yes, but they rust like crazy unfortunately and eventually everything starts to break...comfort and offroadability is really good though, and they are very big and roomy.
@@AdmissionGaming I would say find a pajero that isnt too rusty...and also, go for lesser known 4wd that arent crazy expensive like land cruisers and such. For example, Nissan Terrano and Opel Frontera. Although i dont know how available these are depending on where you live.

I had a 90 series Prado up until 6 weeks ago when another 4WDer forced me off the road in the Victorian High Country and I rolled down a ravine 6-7 times. Come out with a broken shoulder and a long recovery. It was a V6 Petrol and a great rig that I put a lot of time and money into to become a great long range tourer. Heaps of videos up on my channel with it. Have now picked up a 1HZ 80 Series as my replacement.
Got my Isuzu Trooper last year for $1200 the thing has been stupid reliable. I can't believe the flex the back end has on it. I'm glad I was able to find something under the radar and it performs better then friends who spent 10 grand on rigs.
Picked my isuzu trooper up for $2,500 and I cant fault it either, great rig with a few simple mods like tyres and lift and the flex u get in the rear is insane
Love the Prado. I beebopped all over the Kuwait desert in one about 20 years ago. Never got stuck, was comfortable, reliable. Just a great little vehicle offroad.
Bought my 2001 90 series Prado V6 7 years ago for $12k. Only had 155k kms so it was a steal, as I still have just over 260k kms on the clock now! I did consider the diesel version, however when I counted the extra money for purchase and maintenance costs, the rough calculations showed I'll have to drive at least 80k-90k kms to get the money back. Took well over 5 years for me to justify the cost of diesel. Couldn't be happier😎
Love seeing the Pajeros get some attentions, need some more footage of them offroad and how capable they really are. There hasn't been a big hill my NP hasnt gone up yet
Mate I watched a video on a hill climbing competition the other day with all these monster offroaderd struggling up these hills and I shit you not I could see my stock pajerovwould have just breezed up it like a paved street 😂
I own a 2010 4L V6 Hilux 4x4 AT. Absolute best buy I did. Fuel consumption varies from 7-8.5 km/L and once up to 8.9km/L. Towing down to 5km/L. Driving cruise control surprisingly still gives best milage, even hilly roads, just drop it a gear and back up again. 250 000 km on it and still going very strong. Have not been stopped by anything and, touch wood, never will.😎
I have a 2010 rc colorado, done some of my own upgrades such as induction upgrade, 3 inch exhaust that sounds amazing and a diesel performance chip and I couldn't be more happier with the car, great power, used to be abit laggy imbetween gear changes but since doing the upgrades she runs like a rocket now, awesome cars.
I got a 3.5 petrol, 99 nl widebody for $2200 about 12 months ago. I've had no major issues with it. Super capable offroad, and gets around 600 to 650 km to a full tank on the hiway, on 33 inch at's, if i set the cruise and sit on about 95 to 100 kph.
I got a 1998 Prado. It cost me $3k and came kitted out with a 2 inch lift, 32 inch mud tyres, a cool draw system, a second battery and a rear locker. I do a lot of rocks and mud with it and she drives them well, so they are not just a family tourer.
I just bought a 90 series Prado a few months back. Picked her up for 10.5k then spent abt 2k on tyres and new injectors and so far so good 👍🏼 great cheap option for off roading
I have a 2001 V6 Prado with full service history . Bought it for around $5k about 2 years ago . Put another $5K in maintenance and mods. More or less bulletproof now. Loves the juice though ...
Picked up my 90 a year or so ago for $5700 and was clean with one owner and full service history since then Ive built it into a fine off road tourer. It was stock when purcahsed and have spent a heap on suspension and getting the engine etc ready for the big trips. Will be taking her next year as back up vehicle in the kidney Kar rally. Love the 24/7 4wd channel. Nice video Jocko love that you mentioned the 90 series very underrated Ive pulled my mates 80 series out a few times haha blow there minds when you get pass a difficult section of track and they say how you do that. And picking a 4wd is all about what you want to do with and the cost. Keep up the good work.
Hey Jock, the young fella and I just picked up a 96 disco 1, picked it up for 2k and spent 4 k on it to get it to a good reliable weekend fishing and 4x4 rig.... not the quickest old girl but heaps of fun and didn't need to take out a home loan to get her out and about!!! Cheers

Discovery 2 with its suspension, low weight, storage space, interior and to top it off: a CDL and incredible TC is one of the best capable cars ive ownedm
Asd 2” spring spacers, 30-40 mm wheel spacers, longer shock absorvers and abs sensors, a winch and good bumpers and you have a go anywhere beast. The engine is easy to remap to 165hp with no risk apart of broken exhaust pipe screws(cheap to replace with disco3 ones forever). Cut the pipe nerves and that’s it. You’ll keep a good 11 to 12/100kms fully loaded(could be a bit more if full time in low gear)… Parts are cheap and the car is easy to fix anywhere as it’s really simple(I don’t get why people keep on saying it’s a car with too much electronics…wich I can’t find..). Cheers. Enjoy your rigs, whatever they are…
I replaced a Fuel Pump on my NP Pajero Petrol for under $1000. I think you said $4000. I like your commentary and its about time someone recognized the NP Pajero for its value. I have owned mine for 8 years now and had some little issues from time to time but nothing major. As you said a good set of tires, reliable suspension and a little housekeeping make this a great car for 4x4 and touring. I’m a bush walker and this car has taken me to some virtually unreachable places. Thank you for the recognition.
The gen 2 pajeros are a really good budget buy. In terms of mods you can put stock gq coils in the rear and 4Runner shocks in the rear too give it a 3 inch lift. As long as it isn’t a 3l v6 one this means you can fit 33’s with some decent flex in the rear with the sway bar disconnected. Only issue is you lose flex in the front end.
I picked up a 2002 sr5 hilux last year for 6k. Had 300k kilometres on the clock but previous owner spent over 10k doing it up. I’ve spent money only customising it to my needs and can sell it tomorrow and double my money spent. The kzn165r motors are unbeatable! Such a capable rig for what it’s cost and will run forever!!!! Was never into 4wds until I was diagnosed with epilepsy and had to sell all my enduro bikes….. I got hooked on the channel and you guys have showed me a new passion which shows me the great outdoors of this beautiful country!!!!
Discovery 2a gives you aircon, electric windows, electric rear view mirrors, electric fuel door, traction control, constant 4wd, central locking, auto off interior lights, full chassis, coil springs or air suspension, power steering, cruise control, lots of aluminium panels, abs braking, descent control and a choice of engines that ARE AS RELIABLE AS ANY OTHER ENGINE, provided that proper maintenance is carried out and quality parts are used. My advice is to get one from a motor mechanic owner if possible or get it inspected first.
The td5 has plenty of character like driving a truck. Agree get a good one as they arent fun engines to work on. Also they use alot of technology not found in other 4wds such as unit injectors as well as funky problems caused by things such as oil in wiring harness so you need to find mechanics that know what they are doing on this particular car.
@@4WD247 In another life as 4wd Action, this forum carried out a cost analysis of V8 read unleaded vs diesel running costs over a period and it was concluded that unleaded vehicles were as cheap or cheaper to run. As was mentioned, what you save buying a lower priced unleaded vehicle can be $ thousands, so no bank loans, no interest etc. Why spend $60k to $100k on a diesel to save a few fuel cents and then laugh at a V8 unleaded owner of an older model who owes $0 to a bank has used savings to fit it out with accessories etc (and a long range tank).
Ive got a 90 Prado RV6 petrol that has bullbar, roof rack, 2" lift, winch, lights, snorkel etc that had just had basically all the accessories replaced, less than 200,000kms - $10k. I use it for work trips deep into Arnhem Land and running around in Darwin - seriously awesome vehicle and value for money.
yeah the 90 series. i have one its a 1997 model with the rooftop tent, max tracks, draws, fridge and a few other bits and peices. it had the 3.4 V6 engine in it and sub fuel tank. even tho it was petrol still a decent amount of power. fuel econemy with both tanks is fantastic for high way driving. and depending on the terrain the fuel used would vairy when on the tracks. i did five rocks in it and it didn't let me down once. its a really comftable and cable tourer. i picked it up for around the 9k mark (but it was really looked after). but it was worth every cent. if anyone is thinking about buying one i 100% reccomend it.
90 series Prado owner here! We are travelling Australia full time in ours. Bloody good reliable rigs! Just watch those lower ball joints. FYI the 3rz is also in the 90 series RV4 model
Upgraded from a SWB Pajero iO to my trusty 1KZ Hilux. Both great off-road, but in terms of reliability, fuel economy, space and comfort, the win goes to the luxy. Can’t beat an old toyota! 👌🏼 With that said, never underestimate the baby Paj wagons!
Picked up my first fourby a few months ago 120 series Prado GXL with the 1GR-FE with just under 200000 on the clock for 11k. Clean as and stock as a rock at the moment, 1 owner. Full service history and had never even seen the dirt. Fuel consumption is pretty decent get about 1000-1100kms out of the dual tanks. Looking forward to give her some love. 😂
I'm glad to see the petrol Hilux on there. I had a 2006 4.0L V6 Hilux as my second car and first 4wd. Never did many mods or much to it but it was a very clean 4wd. The fuel economy wasn't as bad as you would think, it all depends how you drive it
Yeah mate I had the same model with a 2 inch lift and 32's. It was the same on fuel as my 105 series 1hz with a turbo kit is but much faster, especially when towing.
I bought myself a 1999 Toyota Hilux 3RZ about a year and a half ago now with a list of off road mods and a full service history for only $4500!! It had 361000 km on the clock and it’s not sitting at 383000. Absolute bargain and so capable off road, I LOVE it!! It’s gets around 450 km out of a tank so I couldn’t be happier with it really, I highly recommend these great rigs to anyone looking for a, reliable and capable 4WD.
Regarding the Disco, why is there no mention of the V8? I have owned a manual 3.5 EFi V8, and apart for an oil change every year, it presented no major issues. I bought it unseen for 2800€, and it had just under 200 000 clicks on it, without a service history. The architecture of these engines is extremely simple, and apart from worn valve tappets, there is little to go wrong. Okay, fuel economy is not its thing, but as a recreational vehicle it doesn't really matter (imho). I used it for weekend off-roading, and fuel consumption was about 20l/100 km. Obviously not the best choice for a daily driver (because of fuel economy), otherwise a cracking piece of equipment right out of the box! Remember, it is basically a Range Rover chassis with a different body... No matter what engine you pick, it is going to be great. *But get a V8 if you can!* ;-) Smiles per miles all the way, and you definitely stand out from the crowd of 300TDi's and other oil burners out there.
Scored myself a 3.0L 95 series prado 9 months ago. Few k’s. 386, 000k’s. Well serviced. Running 31” goodride radial M/T tires. I absolutely love driving it. Get just over a few hundred k’s on a full tank. Absolute beast of a machine. And, makes exceptional power
In the US, my opinion for one of the most underrated, best value 4x4s is the 1st gen Toyota Sequoias. They’re gaining popularity in aftermarket support, and most have spent their life never seeing dirt before as they were a common soccer mom vehicle. I picked up an ‘05 Sequoia for $2,000, and have since turned it into an off-road monster for under $10,000 for the total project. Not bad!
I've had a v6 np paj for about a year and a half gets about 12ltrs/100klm on the highway not much more when I'm towing. They are a prick of a motor to work on though but we love it.
Appreciate you guys using the Mudbus photo! Love the paj. Love getting it out on the tracks and showing people what it's capable of. More often than not people underestimate what it's capable of.
Prado 95series 3Lt turbo Diesel, 426,000kms on clock …no major issues & no smoke, Roo chip 3” exh, & still does 12Lt/100kms. Just put new clutch in it now @425k, & done Gold Coast to Perth 3 times via Adelaide once. Reliable☝🏽
I love my 1fz 80. It’s my first car that got as an apprentice 10 years ago for $6500. $15000 cheaper then the diesel at the time. It averages around 18-19/100 and I’m going through the process of turboing the old girl! It’s an absolute beast! And has never let me down
I love mine too. The 1FZ often gets overlooked for the diesel but I reckon the petty is underrated. A bit thirsty but the price difference buys a lot of fuel
One 4x4 most people overlook is a Pajero iO. I bought a 2002 model with 160k on the clock with full service history for 6k. I have owned it for some time and zero issues. They are super reliable and capable! Best budget 4x4 by far💯
Bought my v6 3.4l prado for 6grand with 260ks on the clock. The car is an absolute weapon and built like a brick s**t house. Even after I rolled it on the beach still going very strong. All I had to do is pop the rear spring back in and top up the power steering fluid. Easiest fix ever! Best car I've bought by a mile!
I have owned Pajero’s for 10 years now, mostly diesels and they all have their good points and bad but recently picked up the Delica in the Pajero picture. They are highly underrated as well.
@@BassHuntersozstyle not slow at all. Thirsty yes. Maybe 400-500km a tank depending how you drive and no discernible difference between petrol or diesel. Having had both I prefer my petrol one for the power and it's a quiet running machine. Will still crawl at low speeds invlow range too.
Not real slow and don’t drink too much either. The cape trip all loaded up it did 12.6lt/100kms, they only have a 72lt tank in them so it seems like we were always stopping for fuel. The L400 has the 4m40 and they can be tuned quite easy.
Great video! I've got the 1996 3l 1kz manual prado. Brought it at 8.5k with 300 thou kms, is in mint condition and regularly serviced, never skips a beat
Seriously, the 90/95 Paradis are one of the best going around. Solid build quality body wise and you can't kill them 3.4 V6 engines they will do up to and over 500000 klms if serviced. Also the Jackaroo with the 3.5 ltr petrol is another solid offroader.
I bought a 2011 150 series GX prado for $18000 with 150000kms on it and around $5000 in after market parts on it. an absolute steal of a buy and it goes everywhere with me.
@@tgnome2768 she’s amazing. Had no issues so far, just general wear and tear (needed a new water pump). Fuel economy is terrible but that’s to be expected hahah. I love it, best camping car 🙏
We bought a 200 Series petrol, against everyone’s recommendation...except for a diesel mechanic. The mechanic told us to do the sums on fuel usage and factor in the cost of servicing the big Cruiser if it had a diesel (especially one approaching the 200, 000 km mark). For us and the type of driving we do, we will have to travel over 100 000 klm’s before the cost of fuel catches up to the cost of buying a diesel 200 and its servicing. We get an average of 18 litres/100 km’s and our big girl does everything and goes everywhere the diesels go. We don’t regret going petrol at all!
You guys are making a great point here!.. I bought a 1998 Prado in pretty mint condition clocked at about 268000kms, 3.4L petrol for $5.5K cash after a little bit of bargaining. It was a couple of years ago but surely grabbed the best deal out there!! The cherry on the cake is that mods like Ironman bull bar, winch, UHF, Bridgestone AT tires, roof rack and awning also came in the package! I only had to change the radiator that was pretty roasted, did a full service and added a set of 2 inch Tough Dog suspensions and I was ready for any sort of adventures.. It means that I could use the spare cash for the rest.. The V6 always ran like a champion and the car's now fully kitted with lithium battery system and all the comfort needed for touring like a king.
I picked up an auto V6 petrol N70 hilux earlier last year for just $18k with all the extras (bull bar, winch, second battery, roof rack w/ awning and solar panel, light bar, spotlights, rear light, UHF, 2" lift, BFG Ko2 A/Ts) - unreal value, best thing I ever did. Fuel efficiency anywhere between 14-20L/100km which is high, but love the power and torque you get from the stock petty engine, not to mention consistency across all rev ranges. Reliability of these motors with regular oil changes and care for the cooling system is second to none. Timing chain vs belt is another huge bonus.

From what I've seen, Mitsubishi has found a viable airbag replacement for the Pajero. I managed to get an NT Pajero diesel for $7000 registered and rwc. Had a lift, bullbar, spotlights, roof racks and awning. Had a few more KMs than I would have liked but I'm happy with it
Had a 90 series as a first car, rolled it down a logging field about 20 metres at 60kph, walked away with some cuts but nothing broken. It’s used for the cows as a shelter from the wind now but if you need to move it you can still drive it but squeezing your legs into the crushed cockpit.

Most underated. Navara d40. Got mine at 180k kms canopy and bullbar for 12k. 6spd diesel. Did dual row timing chain for peace of mind. Been wheeling it for over 12months now and its been fantastic and gone everywhere ive asked it to go.
I’ve got a petty FZJ80, getting between 18-22L/100km. Bought it for 8, and only now have I put 8k into it after having it for 3 years. The money put into it, has mostly been in suspension, tyres and rims, roof racks, roof top tent, fridge, compressor, solar setup, drawers, and many other camping accessories, and in my regular maintenance ie services and full bearing replacement. For the fact I’ve spent 16k in over 3 years, and the diesels in my area were chasing around 20-25k, I can’t fault it. Also only has 260k in the clock, was owned by an old couple prior to me and was as stock as a rock. In my opinion for the money spent, I think it was the best option at the time.

Never understand why discos were always so cheap…turbo diesel, coils all round, huge aftermarket parts if happy to ship from uk, comfier than anything else the list goes on
Bought my Disco 2 2004 TD5 for 4k a year ago. 220XXXkms well looked after, auto, leather, 7 seater. Wayyy more comfortable than other coil sprung 4WD's, a nicer place to be inside and a weapon off road.
Mate ! I saw the video , hectic stuff ! Glad you're ok ! Pity about the 90 ! Keep on keeping on!

Absolutely agree with cost difference(cost of ownership in diesel is not as economical as presented V petrol)

Cheers
I got my 2003 2.7L hilux about 5 months ago with 260000km for $10000 with 2 inch lift kit, arb bar work, spotties, winch, rear air locker, snorkel, uhf, new mud tyres and wheels. 👍🏼
You’ll keep a good 11 to 12/100kms fully loaded(could be a bit more if full time in low gear)…
Parts are cheap and the car is easy to fix anywhere as it’s really simple(I don’t get why people keep on saying it’s a car with too much electronics…wich I can’t find..).
They are cheap in the United States. The Montero's aren't popular at all but I've always liked them.
Gen 2 Pajeros also come standard with a rear locker are the last gen to have a solid rear axle it's a very good vehicle
Proper maintenance is the key 👍
The td5 has plenty of character like driving a truck. Agree get a good one as they arent fun engines to work on. Also they use alot of technology not found in other 4wds such as unit injectors as well as funky problems caused by things such as oil in wiring harness so you need to find mechanics that know what they are doing on this particular car.

In another life as 4wd Action, this forum carried out a cost analysis of V8 read unleaded vs diesel running costs over a period and it was concluded that unleaded vehicles were as cheap or cheaper to run.
I had an nl Pajero with a 4m40t best bang for buck. Prado 100 series draws fit in them and parts are everywhere. Very underrated
My 2001 td5 Dii is a beast. Goes anywhere and does 750kms on a tank, which ain't bad for a 20yr old 4wd.
Upgraded from a SWB Pajero iO to my trusty 1KZ Hilux. Both great off-road, but in terms of reliability, fuel economy, space and comfort, the win goes to the luxy. Can’t beat an old toyota! 👌🏼
With that said, never underestimate the baby Paj wagons!
Finally some paj recognition….. I have the NM paj and LOVE IT… such a good tourer…
Who can say they have won Dakar as many times 🤙
I'm looking at getting one. Currently have a $500 challenger that needs little work to get back on road.
i had 3, nm ,nm and an np. honestly wish i didnt sell them haha or keep one. all diesel and two were autos and one was a manual.
Can confirm a disco 2 with working traction control is easily the most capable stock 4x4 for less then 10k

Not real slow and don’t drink too much either. The cape trip all loaded up it did 12.6lt/100kms, they only have a 72lt tank in them so it seems like we were always stopping for fuel. The L400 has the 4m40 and they can be tuned quite easy.

Up the mighty 90's👍

I used to have a sweet disco 2 and stupidly sold it to my friend for cheap because I had not gotten into 4x4ing yet. With those diff locks I did take it on some super gnarly shit.
We sold one too for like 500 had lockers and all. Was the v8 one
Hell yeah disco 2.
Most underated. Navara d40.
Got mine at 180k kms canopy and bullbar for 12k. 6spd diesel.
Did dual row timing chain for peace of mind. Been wheeling it for over 12months now and its been fantastic and gone everywhere ive asked it to go.
Should’ve bought a Hilux 😜
You can pick up a clean top spec D22 or D40 Navara in the mid teens with some mods
Picked up my 2000 TD5 for 2.5k at the end of 2020
Just got rid of my Jeep XJ, 1999. 4.0L gas motor,, got 18MPG. Pretty good. Loved that truck! Indestructible engine!!!!
Just bought a 2004 discovery 2
5 speed manual 250klm books arb bullbar leather interior all factory apart from the bar needing a good service and a detail for 4500. Was pretty wrapped when you featured it In this show
My 90 series v6 50th anniversary is kitted out with 2/1/2 inch lift, arb bar, winch, 33s, rock sliders, rear drawers, stainless intake , rear drawers, full rack and RTT set-up etc.
And is an absolute weapon off road and for touring
Yeah the mighty 90 prados!
2001 Mitsubishi challenger, got it for $3000 immaculate with 169kms pre covid. No issues with reliability and consistently getting 500-550k to a 74l tank mixed city highway, great car
2001 MK Triton, petrol (3L v6, 6g72), fully loaded with 33's get approx 500KM to a tank if doing 110 most the time lol. Totally worth it, for 5K and then some things I've added, it's a beast, don't look back at all.
Haha. Ours does around 400km to a tank. Good drive though and doesn’t have airbags which is a plus for 4 wheel driving.
@@howtofixyourtech9945 I just finished up a full rebuild, going custom extractors, hi-flow cat and mild steel exhaust so yeah I'm doing good with fuel if I don't hit it too hard lol
@@BloodShot941 very nice! In case you want to do a video on it I’ll subscribe so I can watch it!
@@howtofixyourtech9945 yep working on something, it's nothing like a done up GU/GQ or cruiser or something lol
@@BloodShot941 sounds cool anyway!!
Have a 2010 rc. Have had it for 5 years and it has 300k on the clock, I've had to do the wheel bearings, glowplugs and an exhaust gasket. Absolutely the most bulletproof vehicle out there
Love seeing Disco’s on the list! When are you building up one on the channel?
Dude I hear you , As a Disco 1 3.9L V8 owner myself I totally get you.
The disco’s are so underestimated!!!
They won't do a landrover. It's all about the Japanese. Or maybe they'd be scared to see how good they really are.
In the 2004 models you get both a centre diff lock and traction control which is a lethal combo off road before moving to more hardcore airlockers or equivalent. Find me another turbo diesel coil 4x4 for 4k.... good luck.
You forgot the ultimate bang for buck 4wd wagon, the mighty Hyundai Terracan!
I have a 92 jtop swb pajero and love every time I take it out. not bad flex giving its torsion bar front end.
