    Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

      @@Northernlion That's quite true, but also sometimes you're using a spell that you don't _want_ to play every turn. I used Crypt Builder with permafrost in a spell weakness build. That's a 60 damage spell for 3 ember. It's a bit pricey for holdover (you're supposed to play it via offering) but it's a fantastic spell to multiply with spell weakness.
      Even a juicy ribeye steak might get boring if you eat it for dinner every day, but if you fast until turn 12, that chicken breast is gonna be so delicious.

      Another permafrost example besides the emberdrains, are the "do X times your armor/spikes/dunnoiftheresmore amount of damage to the front enemy".
      You stack a million of whatever it demands, and go full ham on the boss when it appears.
      Also, consume spells that need to be played at some point, it's more reliable to give 'em permafrost and keep them at hand, instead of them cycling through your deck, messing your draw a bit, and then praying to get it the turn you need it.

  • @stardude655
    @stardude655 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    That was a pretty good run of a mixed deck, though I think you screwed yourself a bit by running a deck heavily reliant on debuff (spell weakness) against the boss that counters debuff. After the backlog, you probably already understand to play around the final boss traits more when deckbuilding so you don't hard counter yourself. There'll also probably be a lot of comments on misusing the daze ascend/descend cards, but may as well include em. They can be used on enemies for the daze particularly and to reposition certain enemies to the back of a diff floor(like sending an enemy tank or a 0 atk unit to the back of the next floor). When used on your own guys, there's definitely a use case for it sometimes, but the drawback is you're dazing your own units, which can lead to pretty big tempo loss unless you're already strong enough without that unit's help.

    • @NZVargs
      @NZVargs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not convinced that the boss ability is what killed him. He just had no sustain, which is obviously pretty common in a Stygian/Hellhorned deck. The final fight is very long and his tanks were guaranteed to die eventually, at which point his entire setup crumbles.

      @narius4241 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know i'm 2 weeks late but i'm gonna say it anyways, passing that artifact that shoves 4 random units in your deck onto the second floor also screwed him substancially, probably a lot more then any other reason mentioned. Think about it, he had a good descend card and a good ascend card, playing his cards right he had everything he needed to make floor 2 absolutely monstrous, but he passed an artifact that would have given him an insanely good start to doing just that. I physically cringed when he passed up on taking that tbh.

    Hey NL, LOVING the series so far! I checked through the comments of this video, and didn't see anyone mention it, but another thing you can do with imps that I'm not sure you've realized is that you can summon them to gain their effects, then if they're endless and you have a torch card, you can summon them, torch them to kill them, then they wind up on top of your draw pile. It's really good for things like stacking rage, or using the energy imp to get consistent energy gains on your turn. Great job with the series, can't wait to see more, there's very obvious improvement in every episodes and I can't wait to pog off every day when these go live!

The reason your spell weakness damage sometimes seems off, is that you use spells that deal x damage several times, and the enemy dies before all the hits connect, resulting in 'lower' numbers. For example that first boss would have taken double that amount of damage from helical crystal, but the first hit dispatched him to the stratosphere.

    NL the math for this is simple...the spell hits twice but only shows one number because that's all the damage it needed to do...4 stacks of spell damage adds 100 damage per hit (200 total bonus damage) then the 50 that the spell originally does gets you 250...the damage shown was 125 half of 250 since the spell hits twice...hope this helps clear it up sorry if I'm bad at explaining

    If you have sweep and spell weakness on the stygian champion and pick frostbite from a later upgrade, the frostbite and sweep work together perfectly. Of course it's better in a deck more focused on frostbite, but now you know ;)

    Probably late to give tip comments for this series, but when given the choice between the card that sends a unit to the bottom or the claw that takes the unit to the pyre, I was thinking the claw would be a fantastic thing to remove an enemy tank unit that deals no damage and feed it to the pyre. Meanwhile, the low HP damage units don't get to hide behind the tank anymore. Just my two cents :P

    I wanna preface this with I absolutely love the Large Stone upgrade, but its important to realize that while good, its not always the right call. If you struggle with capacity, you should try not to take too many large stones on too many units.

    NL is trying to use the ascend/descend but give dazed spells on his own units, but they're best used on enemies so that they don't deplete your health before the boss fight. imo NL was struggling in terms of damage because he allowed his tanks that were also massive damage dealers get so low, and then the bosses that have fairly hefty attacks came in and made sure those tanks only got at most a few swings. Aka he's trying to play an awoken style, leave tank at front to absorb damage while keeping them healthy so that they can inflict heavy damage on the boss, without the capability to keep them healthy.

    • @ALittleMessi
      @ALittleMessi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I've found the big demons are really good with awoken for healing, but lack any tank support otherwise

    I realize this episode is like a month old and you probably already figured this out, but here's the formula for spell weakness. Damage(Weakness+1)
    So if an enemy has 4 spell weakness and your spell does 25 damage... 25(4+1) = 25*5=125 damage.
    An easy way to calculate this would just be to have a spreadsheet like google sheets in another tab with the formula plugged in. You enter damage in A1, weakness stacks in B1, and total damage shows in cell C1 or something.
    EDIT: Or you could hover over the icon, like you did, which I didn't realize worked.
