While it's true that you want 0/25 in the front, since you don't know what's coming, your champion might get killed, and then you'd have no tank and no primary source of damage(at this stage at least). Of course, after weighing the benefits, you can still conclude that it's better to put a tank in front, but it's not that simple a choice.
Backline Sentient can work with the regenerate trait if you manage to get a better tank, especially one that doesn't benefit from healing (eg. gorgers/incant armor with a spell heavy deck/armor stacking or you're playing the fifth clan and actively want your units to die). It's the squishiest of the variations, and although it makes sense to use heal to keep a frontliner in good shape, you can also just convert your healing into damage with the champion safe in the back. Works especially well if you double down on the regenerate variation, as the damage from stacking regeneration becomes absurd. Spikes Sentient barely works in the back, but only if you dedicate the whole floor to Spikes for huge damage with the one spell that scales with friendly unit spikes, and even then you'd want it in front, as it'll generally be the tankiest unit you have. Revenge Sentient in the back is pure meme though. It's literally just a huge wall for your attack units to snipe behind.

I love how the idea of putting the Sentient in the front is so against NL’s natural instincts, that even knowing that he is supposed to be in the front, he still finds reasons to put him in the back early on

im pretty sure he axed some episodes he recorded before that stream. He said that some good episodes were coming after ep 3 on that stream and in episode 4 he used knowledge acquired on that stream. I gueessing its because of the backseat gamers

I've learned very quickly that I like Umbra almost exclusively for their "Make capacity bigger on this floor" cards. The units are just okay, the morsels are strange and don't give a big enough impact without the "procs twice" artefact but the capacity is always good no matter what clan. I love the game and thanks for introducing it to me, I know you say "It isn't me that made you buy the game" but sincerely for me it is. I don't really like slay the spire AND I would never in a million years have given this a chance without your videos so sincerely, thank you.
Seriously, if you put the steward behind the champion it lives for like 6 turns (until the tank dies) adding 30 damage, but if you put the steward in front of the tank the tank only lives for 1 more turn (until the steward dies) adding 5 more damage. Basically big health units goes in front always unless the damage is many times more. I see your logic for putting the bigger damage in back but doing 1 damage 20 times is alot better than doing 10 once (really only matters for the relentless enemies without sweep love thecseries nl keep up the good work we love ya)
Trying to work out what the hell he means. Perhaps he looked at 3*3 and then concluded that it did that 3 times? He counted Multistrike twice rather than realising 3*3 attacks IS the multistrike.
A mechanic you may have missed here (and seems right up your alley, honestly) is that with two unconsumeable channelsongs, you could have avoided playing the unit the first time it upgrades, and then hit it with one more, or even more, hits of channelsongs, making a truly insane unit
It took me a while to wrap my head around reform because the "graveyard" wasn't a thing up until this point, I thought my champ could only resurrect units that died on its floor this turn... love the game but man, some stuff can be confusing!

Hey NL, im loving the series! I'm playing the game daily. Just a reminder/suggestion than 0 attack minions/champions benefit a lot by going in the front, especially when they synergize with regeneration. Try thinking of the awoken champion as a damage sink instead of just a tank, In addition to stopping damage from DPS, it also gives benefits that do damage either when it gets hit (draw, spike damage, spell weakness etc...) or when it gets healed (usually damage). Train stewards are okay to buff. A 10/13 for 20 gold is a good trade, and better than an early purge (when you dont really have anything you wanna draw more of) or a pointless re-roll. I try to think of re-rolling as an opportunity cost evaluation. If there is a specific buff you want on your good unit (multi strike on a frost dealing multistrike unit, a large stone for a low capacity unit, holdover for a capacity+ or descend/ascend card) than rerolling a good buff might be worth the squeeze. If you're not fishing for anything, it isn't really worth it. Thanks for the great content and i cant wait to see more!

M-M-M-M-MULTISTRIKE! I've come to realize turning a mechanic up to 11 is the way to play this game. Just find something on your run you can abuse and then squeeze it for every last drop. So much fun, keep the series rolling.
I love this series, really hope it sticks around! Just as addicting as watching Isaac runs.. I've lost a lot of productivity watching Isaac and Monster Train runs while working from home. My supervisor would like to have a word with you.
I've found that myself a few times. During the video I'm like NL you are kidding me right. Obvious misplays everywhere. But he is inevitably better than me at every game he plays.
See the length, thought could be good....watched the first 5 minutes...checked the length....watched another 5 minutes...scrubbed through to see if it was a multi run episode....nope, just 2 good units doing their job....well built and great discipline on the Channel song.
love the channelsong plays, although with my luck that one time it would've probably hit the train steward that was still in the deck, glad it worked out for you. Also 3x3 is apparently 27, I never knew ;)
Permafrost and holdover have different applications. Permafrost is for cards that have specific use cases and you want to make sure you have it in your hand for when you need it. Holdover is for cards you plan to use almost every turn. On paper they might sound very similar but they have complete opposite use cases.
i like that you see the outcome of the turn, it takes a little "whoops I miscalculated" off, but with this much stuff going on at once its super nice, great desing choice :D
Great content as usual, Zane beyond a man's wildest dreams. Speaking of Zane, I'd like to spring an idea for insane Zane onto you NL: Stacking Channelsongs on a unit. The 0-cost can't really stack, but it's certainly not bad to let a unit shuffle back into your deck, continuously building it up with channelsong(which also brings it back into your hand btw) Until you capitalize on your investment by firing off that 0-cost 105/108 Train Steward straight into the boss on top floor or otherwise. Feel free to try it, or let it rattle around the cerebral cortex. Thanks for the company.
NL, I feel like you're massively undervaluing putting thorns on your tanky units, especially the ones you're going to be spending heals on. Weaker units will kill themselves up against your Sentient even though it has 0 attack if you just put some thorns on it and let it sit in the front. Its the best way for the Sentient to pull weight in the early game.
Awoken hollow is the best pawn in game arguably, always take when you have heal, place on top floor and get him pogged for boss, umbra morsels also assist greatly
And then come up against the stage 2 sweep boss or the end game sweep + rage on kill enemies and then cry in dead morsels. Covenant 5 is kicking my ass lol.
I think it's Awoken that are op. The heals are busted to the point you can faceroll with awoken but need to struggle with any other race. Seems crazy to have cards healing for 30 in there and nobody else gets a heal whatsoever.
@@sarevok6 sure, other factions don't get a direct HP heal but they have their own healing analogues: hellhorned have armor, stygian guard have armor and +max HP, umbra have damage shield, lifesteal and +max HP, melting get brought back to life.

The devs ought to add an option that limits the number of times you hear character hit grunts during endless rounds. It does get kind of ridiculous.

Exactly. Leave the tank in the back and the morsel in the front. That's the perfect strategy.
Even better if the morsel would give lifefesteal to your champion that WANTS to be healed

Melting is definitely one of the more fun clans. Reform and harvest are such zany mechanics.

You can actually use a Descend effect on a unit that is already in the bottom. It doesn't descend but the other effects still apply.
Holding right click will make the combat go even faster.
