    Thanks. Didn't notice the lock group setting. I've been manually moving every unit which is such a pain. This'll save a lot of time.

      I think I played Rome 2 like you for 2 years. When I realized that I can lock groups it was like a new game for me. So much less complicated and more fun.

      Haha yeah. It sucked to carefully make all your formations before battle and then press Ctrl-A and forward march, and the whole army would reorganize into one huge straight line like a bunch of dummies. I'm glad those days are over for me.

      i was the same way lol actually quit playing because the older total wars auto locked your formation when you grouped em'.

    A lot of people are commenting about the Alt key movement. This is of course an important feature for movement, but I wanted to include this as part of a later discussion about battles once they had begun, the lock groups movement is important to know as a beginner so you can keep your groups together if you wish to do so. The alt method works just as well but in my opinion you use that for fluid changes in a battle I wouldn't use it as a beginner straight out the gate.

      plus the alt move is a brand new feature which isn't too refined yet seeing as they're is no way of rotating your formation to face your enemy the classic group method is much better. (for now)

    you gave an unintentional hint that I did not know. by double-clicking the unit card, it highlights the unit... I often find units get lost in battle and this tip will be super handy.

  • @Zolfried
    @Zolfried 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    problem with this is, you only move 1 group at a time, if you wish to move the entire army up, you can select your entire army and use LAlt button. to move the entire army in the formation they are currently in.. without adding them to group numbers.
    i usually do this if the enemy doesn't attack, or if i want to move my army further ahead of my artillery, without breaking formations.

  • @FSuixo
    @FSuixo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I usualy make a formation group the entire army and then ALT drag the entire army until missiles reach. I then bring pikes foward and reinforce and/or press a breach where I can with melee strong units. I use Cavalry to crush routed units and shock hit and runs on the flancks. yeah... this is how it should be done.

  • @trollzynisaacjohan1793

    to kill dwarves really well is by sending basic infantry on their front to hold them up and then getting Calvary to flank and attack their rear won't matter if there tough as dwarves don't have the toughest infantry unit (black orks are the toughest).

    You can also mass formation move your army by selecting as many units as you want and then holding ALT+left click and then releasing wherever you want them to move to

  • @Muck006
    @Muck006 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    One more thing would have been nice:
    You can give units a "curved move order" - to make them move around another unit in melee to strike from behind for example. How is that done? There is probably a shift/ctrl/alt key to be pressed with maybe a few clicks inbetween ...

    Total War: Warhammer is my first introduction to the Total War type genre, so I just wanted to say thanks for this as it was helpful. Also, I have an open question to anyone that could answer. Sense watching this I've also learned that I can use Shift to add pivot points to the routes of the cavalry. So for for simplicity's sake imagine sending your cav past a unit then hold shift and click them back toward the units backs (Kind of like the shape of this |\ ) now I also want them to attack so I'll hold shift again and click the enemy unit and presto the line turns red and it looks as if my cav is going to run past and turn around to charge the unit in the back, but instead they will just stop moving at the last shift click or pivot point in the sequence up to the point where I hold shift and click to attack. So I can Shift click a crazy zigzag pattern all over the field and the Cav will follow it, but add one more shift click that's a attack command and the line turns red, as if their going to follow the zigzag pattern and then attack, but they always just stop and stand wherever that shift attack command was entered. So what's the deal is this just bugged out, or am I doing something wrong, or is this something that will work with some units and not others? I don't know if it's just caz I'm a noob feeling overwhelmed by all the micro managing, but I really wish I could get this to work right. Fuck, I also really wish there was a way to control unit behavior. Like Cavalry for example, I wish the UI allowed for me to send my Cav in to attack a unit and it would charge in, and out, and back in again, and again on it's own so that if I get tied up in micro managing something else my Cav won't just sit there getting destroyed. It makes no sense to me that cavalry does not do this on it's own. I'm sure in a lot of cases you'd want to control their movements more strategically then that, but it's not as if in a real battle scenario where the general is busy issuing orders to the rest of the troops the cavalry would just forget that they should be charging shit instead of fighting at a stand still where their horse could easily be killed by a dagger let alone a sword or spear. FUCKING "A" I WISH I KNEW HOW TO MAKE MODS QQ.

  • @aLmAnZio
    @aLmAnZio 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    +Luetin09 I am a veteran of the series, but I've never been any good at it. But there is one feature I really, really do miss that is related to this. Instead of grouping sections like this, I usually group units by type for several reasons. However, I don't know how to keep the entire army in formation when doing this. I usually want to move my entire army as one blob in the setup I've created for them, but I don't know how to do that.
    I think it should be possible though, but the game never shows you how.

    • @Papand11
      @Papand11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to move your entire army, regardless of grouping, and still keep their formation, select all of them (or the portion you want to move) and use the arrow keys to move them. That might be what you're looking for, if not, sorry :P

    this video helped , but there's somthing i don't quite understand....in what kind of situation would you want your missle units to be in front of melee units? aren't they just gonna get slaughterd almost instantly that way?

    • @Luetin09
      @Luetin09  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      usually ranged units fire first on an approaching army, by having them in front you can engage them long before enemy infantry are a threat, and then as the other army move forward you move them behind to continue engaging.

    • @Prod.MacJones
      @Prod.MacJones 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      depending on the unit type, fire arm units are best to keep in the front ( at least during the start of the fight because they are direct fire units, but for guys with bows you can have them behind your lines since they more or less lob they're missiles. this changes a bit with warhammer because now the firearms units can also lob over your ranks. so the only real reason to put them in front is if you have both say hand gunners and bows and you wanted them to have the same range. plus mostly all missle units are good skirmishers which the only way to skirmish with them is to have them up front. they can also act as a screen for your main army absorbing enemy fire instead of letting it hit your main ranks.

    • @xXN0cturnXx
      @xXN0cturnXx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm wondering...in many guides / tipps i see or read that people put their archers or gunners in front of the soldiers / melees. then when battle comes near they swap positions. i used to try this but i must say my range units can fire like 2 times and then have to retreat (maybe 3 if on a hill)..also the retreating takes some time to calculate. therefore i leave my range units behind my melees. i dont rlly know if this is stupid and if they kill my melees. most of the times i try killing their ranged = firing above the melees and later on keep on pushing otherwhere and / or flanking enemy melees and ranged. there is so much happening on the battlefield within seconds °.°.

      it`s not really stupid it is really just about play style, as for killing your own troops it depends on the ranged units your using direct fire will usually cause friendly fire while indirect or volley type units won`t (or will at least cause much less). in the newer games it doesn`t matter so much because of the easy auto replenish. i prefer to keep my ranged in the front to get like you said those 2 maybe 3 early uninterrupted shots off before pulling them back while simultaneously bringing melee units forward to intercept the enemy. then i`ll usually swing my ranged units to the flanks to get the best shot at the enemy (ranged always does more damage in the backs of units). but of course every situation is different. If I where say taking up a defensive stance say on a hill or at a choke point I`ll keep them in the back from the start.

      obviously for more range. and as the enemies melee starts getting to close you switch positions

    Please make some tactic videos for dealing with giants and spiders

      Giant creatures are by far and large most vulnerable to ranged attacks. Archers can target them even when your melee units are engaged with little worry of hitting your own units. Plus, since these targets are quite large they will take damage from a lot more arrows than, say, a regular sized hero.

      did you watch any of the slayer guides on total war's youtube page? they give pretty quick and easy rundowns on most big baddies in the game

      Use throwaway units to box them in.
      2-3 squads of spearmen take out a giant with ease.

    ive been doing a campaign on normal difficulty after not really playing much of the previous games. anyway i got to the "chaos" stage and really thought i was gonna lose as they seemed to take over the map with very powerful armies. as this was going on i noticed all other local factions suddenly wanted to be my friend, i accepted as i knew this would help (shame they dont turn so easy if it was the other way around) several turns later without even fighting a single chaos army we won. so is this all scripted and will the same thing likely happen again if i restart? also ive not even had a balanced fight yet. its either them with a way over powered army or me. and not having to really use strategy.

      Well I´m playing imperial and I know most of the other imperial and dwarven factions which hated me suddenly wanted to make peace because most of them where closer to the chaos than I was - which meant that we both had a common enemy aswell as their power was shrinking because they where the main target of the chaos armies.

      The problem is chaos is horde army so it really has no time to resupply their armies and just fizzle after destroying the closest factions...

      when I played as the dwarfs the chaos destroyed the empire and the vc and came all the way down to the border princes

      I've only been playing since Rome 2, and honestly there is so much to the game to learn. It took me ages to get the hang of it. Both the military side, and the economic/governing side.

      blindwillie99 they do they have tutorials and the total war encyclopedia, if you want a really good general total war tutorial play medieval 2 or Rome 1 they both have good ones that teach the core concepts of battle.

    Lol, these arent really 'essential tips'. this is just basic tactic information.
    You kinda forgot the biggest tip in battles:
    Set up armie, select the entire armie, dont group, and ALT + RIGHTCLICK to move your entire armie in correct formation forward.

      basic information is essential information?? these are things that I regularly find people struggle with, a quick look at the comments would seem to confirm that so ... yeah.
