I love the character of Noraly. As a woman, it gives me encouragement that she lives to explore and share her world with us. I’m so grateful because it allows me to at least have an armchair adventure of the best kind. No, she doesn’t have time for a boyfriend. She is living her best life. I would only encourage others to do this now, when you have good health and strength. Those do not last forever and it becomes much harder. Not impossible, but intense times, travel is becoming more difficult. I travelled to Mexico by car in the 70s. There was nothing in Baja, just desert and the small towns en route to Guaymas were safe and colorful.

Noraly, amazing trip!! Always wanted to do a back road trip like this though Mexico. FYI, I'm originally from Baja & most my family from Sinaloa, I wanted to share that the soldier that greeted you off the ferry (21:45) was being funny and flirty when he said "te van a robar", that doesn't mean you'll get robbed , thats a very old Mexican traditional expression, it means you'll meet someone and fall in love or someone will fall in love with you, try pursue you to get you to fall in love with him and run away into the sunset. That’s based in a very old tradition where 2 people fall in love with each other and run away together by mutual agreement but it means he "stole" her from her home. It wasn't always romantic like that of course as some cases women were taken against their will to be forced into marriage. But the tradition of making that statement it's still present in our culture, specifically Sinaloa and Baja as a mean to flirt & even break the ice or to even start to court someone. Amazing videos and edit.

The cross cutting between the drone and POV shots gives her original episodic narrative a kind of heightened (no-pun-intended) meditative presence for where she really is - as just being somewhere beautiful in the world. Originally, the music accompanying these sequences lifted our normal shot scanning anticipations into the realm of pure enjoyment that a traveller often feels by being so free, by giving the audience their own personal experience of it. Lately the editing has also been experimenting with these same elements back in the normal episodic footage as well, and slowly converting them too with the same emotional reverence. The xylophone/data title graphic sets up these expectations beautifully. Cinematically, Norlay’s work as an auteur is a quite small treat, so thanks for giving all us mad filmmakers the opportunity to talk about her work.

A hint for you Noraly, from a guy that’s ridden countless miles spanning nearly fifty years: DO NOT TRAVEL ON
THE SHOULDER of any paved road. If at all possible, anyway. Because that’s where all the debris ends up that has fallen off other vehicles and gets kicked off the road. In other words sooner or later you’ll pick up a puncture.
And I completely agree and abide by the rule that you have of never riding after dark.
Also, I’m completely envious of your lifestyle. Like you, I always ride alone, I nearly never book a room in advance, I love to “stealth camp”, that is, pitch my tent where I don’t have to pay. And stop where and when I want, if I want.

Many years ago I was a factory rider for Kawasaki and later Yamaha. I have done the Baja 500 4 times and the Baja 1000 3 times. They were just long hard rides. It was a part of my contract to do the races but I at least didn’t have any expenses that way. I was raised in San Diego so Baja has been my playground for many years. Enjoy the ride and per your own rules, never ride at night there. Too many hazards in the road such as livestock and coyotes. That’s the four legged variety.

We wish you a good and pleasant Trip, You are always welcome to México !

I don't think she understood the joke. For anyone who might not know, it sometimes happened in old Mexico that older men would take young women in their teens either by force or seduction and make them their wives. Since there were few career options, taking a young woman’s virginity meant the man had a moral obligation with the girl’s parents to marry their daughter and thereafter provide for her needs in a lifelong commitment. This is how some young teen girls were ‘robbed’ or stolen from their parents into marriage.
When the soldier asks Noraly if she’s not afraid of being ‘robbed,’ he is not using the word in the sense of someone robbing her of her belongings. He is jokingly asking if she is not afraid someone might seduce her away from her parents to take her as a wife.

Hi Noraly! I hope that this gets to you in time. I presume that those almost microscopic insects are "sand flies" which is what we call them in the Australian tropics. Beware! They inject their faeces under your skin which carries infectious bacteria. It also becomes very itchy. Scratching it makes it worse and you may develop a tropical ulcer. This in turn can extend down to the bone! This is a non-medical description but both myself and my wife suffered bites when we first went to live in the tropics because we didn't know about them. Use a strong insect repellent on all bare skin. And don't scratch bites.

Another time the main vessel "hatch" for loading broke and we added 4 hours at the La Paz and Mazatlán dock while they opened it by hand with large boom trucks..... Cartels hold incredible power. HOWEVER, for the most part, the cartel usually only bothers with people who are involved in their businesses whether directly or indirectly (for example, a blogger was killed for posting cartel crime scene photos and talking about their activities on social media) or are trying to interfere in some manner. So as long as you mind your business and your manners (avoid fights, don't flirt with random women at bars because a member could "own" them), you should be fine.
