As an African, we also have a few misguided people going through skin whitening process destroying that precious melanin. This is so sad 😔. However, glad to say we are happy with our wide noses and full lips and very very few go under the knife for that.

As a Filipina, I am happy and embraced my kind of skin, my kind of nose, my eyes that have eyelids, my black hair, etc. But yes some of my fellows specially celebrities and social media influencers love plastc surgery. As they say " My body, my choice", so be it. If that's how they can achieve their happiness and satisfaction but we know it comes with a price (not the money though) but sometimes your life.

I had so much fat around me eyes they looked like they were melting, I legit looked like the ugly blob fish. Now after surgery I look somuch better

I also got trapped in this, I'm still 17 and watching k-pop idols and engaging with korean content there is this thing fixed in my mind that "small nose is beautiful'' and I had decided that when I got a job and have money I will make done my nose job...
But after some time I get over of these thoughts and start engaging less with k-content. I am done with them.

When I initially got into k-dramas I always felt something was off and then quickly noticed how much toxicity is filled in their actual society and supposed dramas, the way they perceived things especially beauty and it just made me disgusted to be honest. I have never perceived beauty in the same way others do so I was never bothered by their looks or thinking but do noticed that how they treated those who supposedly looked ugly according to them and how almost all the leads looked flawless and how they were treated and especially what could be the effect of all this on the audience especially young audience. K-drama are all just a pretty facade hiding a toxic and disgusting mentality. I have stopped watching it for years now. And for k-pop, it never interested me that much so I never got into it.
when I was unaware that a thing like a "beauty standard" exists, everyone seemed and still seem normal and fine the way they are, in any form, shape, colour etc, but then I started using internet more and found about how much people are obsessed with those thing outside.
We Indians are simple people, and after judging how the world outside is like, I'm so glad I have grown up in a simple carefree society. Yes, colour issue exists and others but atleast our society doesn't force people to take decision like to go under surgery and stuff by being too harsh with them and at the end of the day everyone seem content and happy in their own skin, atleast from all the people I have met so far. I hope it stays the same but just moving toward more on a positive side.

The amount of respect I have for your reporting is immense but to correct you this very time , I think as a doctor I have the responsibility to let the world know , plastic surgery is a very broad speciality which has a subspeciality called aesthetic surgery which includes the things that you talked about , Plastic surgery deals with Burns , cleft lip and palate management management of limbs affected by trauma , Tumor reconstruction . Some patients donot consent for a plastic surgical procedure , kindly stick to the term aesthetic surgery. It was really appreciated that you did include one 10 sec clip on non-aesthetic plastic surgery
she does use the expression "cosmetic surgery" and she also states at the outset that such cosmetic surgeries are the most frequently performed plastic surgery. so yes, plastic surgery is a "very broad speciality" as you say, but the fact is that plastic surgery is predominantly undertaken for cosmetic purposes, and not for the purposes you speak of. many choose to become plastic surgeons, because there's a fair amount of wealth they can make of cosmetic surgeries, so there's really no need for WION to sugarcoat things and call plastic surgery "aesthetic surgery".
Plastic surgeons are crucial in accident recovery and acid attacks. It’s hugely misunderstood, just like dermatologists are running new cosmetic clinics, taking away focus from more crucial problems of their field.

Thank you for being careful with your word choices. “Perceived flaws” indeed. Most of these are unnecessary surgeries of which all carry a risk. Personally, I think when women have distinct noses they’re so beautiful and it’s disappointing when they go through rhinoplasty to “correct” something that was never a flaw to begin with. Ironically, I still work on accepting and loving my own. “Chasing perfection” in and of itself is a waste as the concept of perfection is subjective and ever-changing. What happens when big hips and thighs are no longer the ideal? Permanent skin changes as elasticity is lost as we age when the silicone is taken out.
Men equally go through these procedures....read the recent articles.

@@freedombro6502 All surgery carries risks. As a result, there are protections in place to ensure children aren’t operated on unnecessarily. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would operate on a child unless his or her life depended upon that surgery taking place; say, for example burn victims and skin grafting. AFAIK neither SRS nor FFS are done on children in any country. You may be thinking of HRT.

I come from a Indian - American family and my aunties and uncles used to tell my mom to lighten my skin , prevent me from going out in the sun , feed me only 2 meals , and apply turmeric on my face because they didn't like the fact I had brown skin ,and curves. I grew up and when I started high - school all the American girls would complement my curves , and skin color. Im happy my mom didn't change me. If you feel you need to alter your body because you feel society doesn't appreciate your beauty. There are always people who view you as beautiful. After you change the way you look people can no longer call you naturally beautiful. Also why change what god gave you. Embrace it and move on.

I feel the people who say don't go for it and love yourself are mostly the people who were never bullied for the way they looked or have a pretty good self steem. I was bullied about how fat I was throughout my childhood. It can be devastating, fortunately I had Odissi and was able to really understand nutrition and nade healthy choices. I think anyone who has good skin hair and is fit is beautiful doesn't matter what the features. The most important thing is confidence. I know conventionally "ugly" people who are very charismatic and I know conventionally "beautiful" people who are very bland and too full of themselves.
Bs. I was always bullied and called as 'fat' till I was 18. I even believed I was fat. The reality was that I was a bit chubby and had wide shoulders and not actually fat. I still have severe issues with how I look because of what happened in my childhood. But I never wanted to have plastic surgery because that shit can turn life threatening if luck isn't with you.

After watching those k dramas and k-pop idols I always found flaws in myself that how ugly I look but with time I realised it's a beauty obsession they have and as an Indian I am happy we do not have that level of beauty obsession. It's not plastic surgery, but getting braces in my early 20s absolutely changed my life. I went from being ridiculed to being highly sought after. I also started getting hired for better jobs. Taking good care of my skin and being healthy enough to have a good BMI all my life has been enough in combo with straight, white teeth to make me benefit from pretty privilege. I won't knock anyone who has to do more to get that from doing it.

people should understand that plastic surgery isn't cosmetic surgery.. cosmetic surgery is just a 1/4th part of plastic surgery!! also even cosmetic surgery is important in many many cases.. but abusing such medical facilities/ technology is strict no no.. please understand that difference.. otherwise soon there will come a time when people will look down upon people who get these procedures because of some disease/ deformity..

Lemme correct y'all.... That's not plastic surgery.. That's called cosmetic surgery.. Cosmetic surgery is done to enhance your looks.. But plastic surgery is done after you've had some sort of accident.. Like you've been burnt or some tissue of your body has to be replaced for better functioning and stuff.. So she did cosmetic and not plastic surgery.

I had a very serious accident wherein my left leg beneath the knee was broken in three places and more than 85% of the tissues, tendons, muscles, etc. were either so mangled or so dirty that they could not be used to rebuild my left leg. A few muscles were taken from my right leg and I also wear a kind of sock from my knee to the foot that keeps the fluid in the leg balanced out. This sock has replaced all the tissues , tendons, muscles, etc. that a normal leg has in it. I was very fortunate, it was 3 to 1 odds that the my leg could be saved and successfully rebuilt. It was successfully recreated because there were two superior surgeons amongst all the surgeons who operated on me. The two surgeons were an Orthopedic and Plastic Surgeon.
I, so far, have had 17 operations and will, for sure, have at least one more when the bones in the left leg are completely healed. The titanium rod that is now in my left leg will, at that time, be taken out
There was no opportunity to save the right leg beneath the knee, so I now have a prosthetic from right beneath the knee down.
Like I wrote, I am a very fortunate person and for me, every day I am better than I have a right to be.
