    Such a kind, nice man... good advice.. Wayne explains in a comment that most people have WD 40, which will get the job done but a light machine oil is good and doesn't rule out silicone spray which I use. Good advice. Don't forget to open the door before you remove the screws or you'll have to use pliers to turn the rod inside the door knob to open the door.

    Super helpful. Excellent step by step descriptions of how to unstick a door knob. Our painter put all of the new door knobs in my brother-in-law's home in wrong. Like all of them. They are sticky. Never have I ever put in a new door knob in and had it be sticky. We will see if this remedies the issue. Thank you! I will update on how it goes when I can get over the Pass.

    Hi Wayne, what if it's a brand new doorknob and the old knob had the same problem? Latch gets stuck inside like yours. House is 4 years old, replaced the old knob because it just locked up and wouldn't open at all anymore. But it was relatively new. Chocked it up to cheap garbage doorknob.

    • @DIYwithWayne
      @DIYwithWayne  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like an alignment problem. If the inside and outside parts are not aligned well, it can cause this. Try to loosen the mounting screws a little to see if it frees up. If so, try to better center the inside and outside parts. Good luck with your project and have a great day.

  • @thatzwhat
    @thatzwhat 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Nice explanation. WD-40 is a penetrant and loosening agent, however, and is not a durable lubricant. Over a short period of time the WD-40 will evaporate, and whatever was stuck before will be stuck again. A small amount of white lithium grease is a better choice for lubricating metal-on-metal mechanisms such as door knobs.

    • @DIYwithWayne
      @DIYwithWayne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are correct but most people won't have lithium grease. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

    Nice clear instructions and visuals. Planning and helping my elderly duplex neighbors try and fix up their back door handle this week, hopefully this resolves the issue with lubricating it up. Just need to get some dry lock or silicone spray, as I’m worried wd-40 or 3-in-1 oil might gum up quick with the cold weather already encroaching, and it being a exterior door.

    Wayne, is it possible to tighten a loose handle that is tightly secured to the door? Can’t find a video on that issue! The handle works well and locks. I know they are made with some play, but this one has too much play in it. Makes me think it’s going to break off soon. I’m in a rental, so not looking forward to multiple key locks. I already have two keys to unlock the doors… Thanks for any advice!

    Watched your video carefully. Appreciated that you did not leave out any steps or assume the viewer had any knowledge about how door knobs work. I got lucky. I did not have to take the whole setup apart. Turns out my setup is different from yours. My knobs are so large that I could not get a screwdriver around the knobs and into the screw heads. So I took off one of the knobs by releasing some hex keys (with an allen wrench) that held the knob onto the shaft. Now I had access to the screws. But before I went further, I tried to turn the door knob on the other side and all worked smoothly. Thought about it. So I put the knob back on the shaft and loosely tightened the hex keys with the allen wrench. I Backed off the knob from the shaft a hair's breath and the system was still working smoothly. Then I tighten the hex keys with the allen wrench and tested the system. Door latch worked equally well with both door knobs. I wrote above at length in case any viewer has a setup like mine so that they can do an easy fix. Hope this is helpful.

    • @DIYwithWayne

      Most likely is the knobs are not aligned correctly. Loosen the screws a little and if the knob works better, tighten the screws making sure the knobs are centered with each other. This should correct the problem Good luck with your project and have a great day.

    Mine turns fine until I tighten down the faceplate screws. Same with my deadbolts. On anything else I would just loosen the screws a little but if I do that here the whole thing becomes loose in the door and makes it a security risk.

    • @DIYwithWayne

    Doesn't lubricant attract dirt like a magnet? What do you think of graphite powder?

    • @DIYwithWayne
      @DIYwithWayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does so try to only use as little as is needed to do the job and wipe off the excess. Graphite works but it is also an abrasive. It is a VERY fine abrasive but it will cause wear. In most cases I don't think this would be a problem in a door lock but in other applications, just be aware. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

    Nice video on how to take apart and lubricate, but a word of caution. Not a good idea to use WD40 as it is a "degreaser" (contains solvents). It may make your lock even worse over time. Graphite powder is your best bet on a doorknob or lock.

    • @DIYwithWayne
      @DIYwithWayne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I prefer a light machine oil but in past videos I have a lot of comments from people that don't have that. They always seem to have WD-40. That is why I used it here. I have used graphite in the past but I'm not a big fan. Maybe I should give it another try. Thank you for your suggestion and for visiting our channel. We hope you have a great day.

      @@DIYwithWayne I'm not sure which lube would be best in this situation, my go to for this off of the top of my head would probably be silicone spray but what about a doorknob that leads into a garage and is subject to cold weather? I don't know if a light machine oil would get sticky in that case or be fine. There's another lube that I recently have been hearing about even though it's probably been on the market for years and it's dry film lube. It comes in a spray can and you can get it at probably any auto parts store. I don't know how good it would be in this situation but I wanted to mention it, I've never used it for anything but they do have their advantages for certain things. Hey man, I just installed a brand new door knob, it came lubed and all. It works and functions great, but seems a little stiff. Did I tighten it too much maybe? Or is it just because it's brand new and needs a bit if working in. Appreciate the help!

    • @DIYwithWayne
      @DIYwithWayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be too tight or not aligned correctly. loosen the screws a little and see if you can center the parts better. Then retighten the screws but just snug enough to keep it from getting loose and try that. Good luck with your project and have a great day.

    • @DIYwithWayne
      @DIYwithWayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to say but it could be it's not installed correctly or a part is broken. I would suggest you remove it and put the parts together but not in the door to see if they work that way. It will make it easier to see the parts in motion. Good luck with your project and have a great day.

      @@DIYwithWayne Update: Did some more tampering and discovered that the torsion spring around the spindle broke. Having a hard time finding any videos/guides on replacing this, but I'm guessing most ppl just replace the entire lock vs messing with this spring.
