It was 1961, my parents bought me a baby blue Mobylette (same year). We lived in France at the time. I was 13 and drove that bike all over. Gas was cheap, since I didn't a job (of course), my dad would give me a 5 litre coupon every two weeks to ride. It got about 150 kms per gallon. We were transfered to Canada late 1962, and I continued to ride. We lived in a small town in southern Ontario, and one day I was stopped by the local town cop (policeman). No fine, but I couldn't ride it on the road anymore. At that time Canada didn't know about mopeds, so I couldn't register/licence it. I parked it the shed, where it collected dust, and 15 years later I found it under a pile of scrap wood. At that time I wasn't into motorcycles so I gave it to a friend who wanted to restore it for his son. Now I'm 78, and I ride my current bike, a 2014 Triumph Bonneville T100. Every time I ride my bike now my thoughts put me on that bike of yesteryear, except I travel a little faster. Oh, to find another, as I'm retired and restore it to it's former glory. Thanks for listening to my memories.

Love this Raleigh video on the RM 6 and 9 Ultramatic. I had an Ultramatic when I was 16 years old. My father sold a few of them in his Hardware Store in the mud 1960’s. He gave a 6 to a younger brother to ride around at our summer cottage in the country on a lake. It was a blue/green or turquoise colour. A customer bought an Ultramatic one and did something that caused it to stop far out in the country and forced him to ride it home like a bicycle. Then he could not get it started again so he brought it back to the store and never picked it up. My father had no mechanic so no one could fix it. I took it home and started taking parts off to see what was wrong. I could find nothing but I was a 16 year old kid and I knew nothing. I put it back together, put gas in it and it ran like a top. Maybe it was only out of gas. But I got to buy it for $50 which was quite a lot of money back then. I never registered it or got insurance. When ever I wanted to take it for a ride, I took the plate off my Kawasaki 350 A7 Avenger. It was fun but I never drove it much. My brother never rode his much either. A couple of years later I wound up owning both of them. Then another customer brought in his RM6 model in a burgundy colour. It had been sitting in a barn and was covered in hay and dust. It would not run. So I cleaned it up and cleaned out the gas tank and carburetor that were full of dust and particles of hay or straw. Then It ran perfectly but the old farmer did not want it and offered it to me for $20 so I had 3. A decade later I sold all 3 and have missed them ever since. I would Love to see you do a video on them. I am only 6 ft 4 but I made them look tiny. You must really dwarf them. Thanks for the trip into my past! The sound was magical . I can almost smell them. Thank you again!

In our youthful pecking order, a Raleigh Runabout was at the bottom, or very close to it. Now they look great, but that's with the spectacles of hindsight. Bikes like the Runabout, Norman Nippy, NSU quickly, Mobylette, Puch Maxi, got people to work when there wasn't much money about.

My father was a retained Fireman and we lived about a mile from the fire station, so Dad bought one to get to the station quickly before we had a car. Come the day of the first shout Dad shot off around the corner where we lived, he fell off broke his arm. I never saw the moped again and I wasn't able to get a motorcycle until I was 22 and had left home.

This brings back memories, my mum had one of those runabouts, she used to go out riding with the next door neighbour who had a Honda 50 which had 3 gears but the Runabout would leave it behind going up hill, mum said she rarely had to peddle assist it, when she stopped using it I’d borrow it and ride all round Kent on it, a pal of mine followed me one day and he said to me when we stopped for a break, “ do you know how fast that bloody thing goes “ I said nope, got no speedo, he said I clocked you at 45 mph, no wonder it flew up hill’s so easily, and that was a stock bike, dad bought it new for mum, can’t remember the Reg, I think it was an E but not sure. 14:07

I started motorcycling at 16 in 1962 on the Raleighs daddy, the 1950's Motobecane Mobylette, painfully slow, the drive belt would slip when it rained so had to peddle up every hill, didn't know at the time that you could adjust the slack, but it did the job of getting me to work... Oh yes, would be great to see you riding a Supermatic or whatever you choose.

That's what I needed to do my paper run when I was 15 instead I had a Raleigh 2speed & you tapped back on the brake once softly to change gear & held foot on brake to use as brake. It was the ideal paper push bike cause not much moving parts & 2 gears 1st gear was great for the hills.
All the other paper boys always trying to swap or buy it cause they're rare as hen's teeth & modern bikes got cable brakes & cable gears & high maintenance.Paper boy bikes get a hiding & the simplicity of the old Raleigh 2speed push bike made it reliable & good on hills.Paper boy bike must have pedal brakes as cable brakes always wearing out cause of the extra weight on front. Some pedal brake bikes like the black only BMX Gutsy which was a tank of a BMX & popular choice for paper boy's but heavy on the hills.Mopeds are great in town & I would like to see a 6'4"er riding one.

I suppose that these days those mopeds wouldn't meet all the design and safety regulations modern bikes are saddled with which is probably why they aren't around anymore. #YES. ...... I had an older Raleigh around 1968, but it was not in a great state. It had had a hard and thankless life. It had a flat tank a bit like a hot water bottle and was the RM1 I think. I bought that for £4 one winters night, from a dark scrap yard of bikes and as I was pushing it the mile or so to my house, I took it up a back lane, turned on the petrol and it started and the lights came on as soon as I pushed it. I rode it home of course. I think that one had a clutch lever, it was about 55 years ago, so I am not that sure. Anyway - a pal of mine loaned me the RM6 Runabout that belonged to someone in his family and that was in a much better state and I rode that all over - out of the town and up the Tyne valley into the countryside. Like you - no license, tax, insurance, helmet - nothing. I was about sixteen. It was a huge delight to me to be able to ride fifty miles like that. I was as free as a bird. I don't know what happened to the RM1. No idea. Later I got a James Cadet and got it insured and taxed, then, I swapped it for a BSA C15. Great days.
EDIT: I just did some research and can confirm that my model did have a hand clutch. That modification came out in 1959. The original RM1 was clutchless.

Brilliant, I started my biking with a Mobylette AV 89 back in 1974. I've also had a Wisp and an RM9 Ultramatic like yours. All now gone, but I still have a single speed Mobylette in pieces waiting for me to put it together. Would love to see the rest of your collection and some video of them on the road.
