a lot of people definitely romanticize the titanic but at least for me i came away from the movie crying because so many people died who could have been saved, not crying because jack and rose didnt survive together. thats just my opinion and perspective on the movie tho

I was on a youth board in high school that planned a convention for about 200 kids. There was about 12 high school kids and 5-10 adults our event was for a fraction of people and we would start playing a year in advance. Vidcon probably plans 2 years in advance behind the scenes. She should have been sued.

I remember when I first watched these episodes with 0 context of what this situation or who Tana even was, Shane's narrative really painted her as the "good guy with some flaws and mistakes to deal with" (aka downplaying the gravity of the entire situation) - only for me to get super confused right afterwards watching other creators very harshly calling her out (AND RIGHTFULLY SO - I am SO glad I was at least smart enough to not fully rely on Shane's words). Because of my younger and dumber mind, the entire tone of the second half made me empathize with her more than focus on the pain of those poor people getting ripped off and left to bake in the sun. Super biased and manipulative stuff. Also distinctly remember him calling himself "daddy" to her, which is just 🤢🤢🤢
Cuz Shane is charming and charismatic untill you truly see his flaws. I watched him almost everyday up untill late 2017 because something he said in one of his videos rubbed me the wrong way (I don’t rember which video or what) after that i was very critical of him and started to notice everything.
I think you can still enjoy a piece of fiction like the Titanic movie. I think it really humanizes the people on the boat that they had actual lives and loved ones, and that’s what makes it so heart wrenching. I don’t think they were trying to take away what a horrible tragedy it was. You see other movies on war with romance in them like Pearl Harbor and I don’t think in any way they were trying to romanticize these horrible things, just humanizing the people that were a part of it. Personally titanic was one of my favorites as a kid. Im autistic so I have this tendency to fixate on a topic? And for me in my childhood, it was ANYTHING Titanic. And no I don't specifically mean the leo 1997 one. Actually, my favorite thing to watch was this documentary movie called "ghost of the abyss" where they took little tethered ROVs and steered them throughout the ship. It was so sad to me, the loss of life but also the loss of such a maritime marvel. I completely understand why they chose to make 1997 Titanic a love story. A movie purely based on the boat would have been very hard to keep interesting especially because to tell the whole story of what it was like that night, you'd need to follow multiple characters throughout the film. And probably would've made it harder to follow and harder to feel connected enough to them, that when stuff happens you really care. Jack and Rose are put there so that 1. You have characters you can follow all the way through 2. So that you HAVE those first and third class perspectives while keeping focus on the through line of the main character which IS the ship 3.when the ship DOES begin to sink, the stakes feel higher because youve grown attached to Jack and Rose and you wanna see them "win". You wanna see the two of them survive and do all the stuff they talked about. You wanna see that love grow and see them grow old together. And finally 4. Once the ship has sunk, and they're in the water, and she's on the door and he's in the water dying, and she lets go of him and he too sinks to the bottom, you feel the loss and grief of the tragedy. The horrific loss of what could have been for ALL of these people. You feel the devastation that Rose probably feels. To finally find happiness and love and have it ripped from her hands. You feel the devastation of the loss of what could have been. She still did all the things he told her they would, but when you see old Rose, you can just tell that she doesn't feel whole. That she never let go of him and that piece of her deeply affects her. The main character was ALWAYS the ship, but the story told WITHIN the ship made it feel so much more devastating when the ship sinks. We ALL KNOW about the Titanic to some degree or another, so just having it hit the iceberg and sink probably wouldn't have had much of an impact.
How can you say that Hollywood has romanticised the Titanic, when you haven't even watched it? It wasn't a dumb love story, it humanised the tragedy that these people faced by showing that they lived lives too and had dreams and fears and ambitions, and yes LOVE that was tragically and abruptly destroyed. I always found it funny how Tana couldn’t make a public apology, call her fans, and cry for that, but she could cry for the camera. Also, here’s my opinion on the Titanic movie. I agree it’s completely screwed up how the real Titanic event has been romanticized. However, I don’t think that was the original intent of the creators. Movie companies have done period pieces for a long time, including love stories. I’ve never seen the movie and I probably never will because I hate romance movies, but in my opinion, trying to offend people and make the event seam beautifully tragic wasn’t the main goal. It’s the fans who glorified the event.

It was during this TanaCON convention docuseries that I realized Shane wasn't the filmmaker he and others thought he was. He's unable to be unbiased or ask the hard questions. He's tough at home in front of his people, but with others he looks up to, or has a history with, or someone he's scared to stand up to, it becomes very apparent that he takes their side or kisses their A$$! He doesn't ask tough questions or show any controversial footage. The fact of the matter is, he used to film great TH-cam footage, he has the capability of being funny & creative, but his fakeness, self depreciating humor, and the fact he cares more about being rich and famous over friends and loyalty really shows the type of person he truly is and isn't.
Part of what rubs me the wrong way with the titanic is that it’s was a corporate failure, they marketed it as unsinkable. They didn’t have enough light boats, they had the lower class people locked down stairs, and most of them didn’t understand what to do because a lot of them didn’t speak English (which most of the crew spoke). They had no clue what to do in the event of the ship sinking. They held the captain responsible, when it really should have been White Star Line. It was a failure on so many ends.

Watching your reviews of the "series" is way more fun than watching them in the first place (before I knew about Shane's past btw) I'm so glad you said about the Titanic, people just follow blindly when something is popular without really thinking about it or questioning it
tbh always hated this series even when it came out, never made me like Tana more because the whole thing just made no sense and left me with more questions than anything
I remember this series and it was the first year I went to vidcon. I also bought tanacon tickets and planned to go on day 2 but they cancelled all events that day. I don’t know how big the vidcon was that Shane went to in 2009 but I assume it was smaller because TH-cam was not as big then as it was when Tana made Tanacon in 2018. I don’t know what she was thinking but I remember around that time Bryce Hall and Tana both got kicked out for different reasons and it was supposed to be a vidcon for the “rebels”. It took forever for me and my sister to get our refund too. 🤷♂️
I know this was just a small point you mentioned, but I don't personally think the movie romanticized the tragedy of the Titanic sinking. I feel it did the opposite, I knew It was sad and tragic but this gave us a look into what it really was like. While rose and Jack were real, there were real couples who went through the sinking. It hits me when how tragic is really is whenever I watch it.
I've always had a little trouble with Titanic because of that though. Like the first half is this sweeping BBC level of attention to detail, great commentary on post-Victorian class and gender roles and how that restricts people. It's more like a painting or a novel than a film. It's just such a whiplash to then switch suddenly to an hour of action explosions. Like the overlap of historical social drama and action movie is a pretty weird mood area that's hard to switch gears. But I agree with you largely. Plus like basically any historical drama is going to be given a romantic subplot in film. I'd say a century old one's less likely to be offensive to people than more modern history. And star-crossed lovers one or more of whom dies is basically one of the most common plots in drama. Weird the Titanic seems to be the one Adam sees as sacrosanct. But I guess people all have their own hidden annoyances
And my personal theory about the door that rose floats on being “big enough for the both of them” was that it was intentionally big enough for them both, but rose symbolized the upper class which takes more than it’s fair share of resources, leaving Jack (symbolizing the poor) to die in the water

I am absolutely fucking with you about the titanic! Thousands of people lost their lives in such a tragic and torturous way, drowning in the freezing ocean, yet people just focus on the movie and make memes and shit 🤬🤬🤬 as someone who has an interest in tragic events like that, they need to be treated with the utmost respect and due regard instead of just being made into a joke or being romanized. Tana is a perfect example of being rewarded for bad behavior. Her entire career and income are completely dependent on her messing things up. If Tana suddenly started showing up everywhere on time, stopped cussing like a sailor , and started making study supply videos while she goes to college and holds puppies she’d lose everything. We made Tana because we wanted her to screw up for our entertainment

I was so pissed off by the tanacon "documentary" I had watched swell entertainments video about her experience at tanacon and had seen other attendees videos too not long before the documentary came out, and I KNEW as someone who went to expos with my dad growing up, that tanacon had been CATASTROPHIC. Not even having attended tanacon myself. So to see Shane sitting there, not asking meaningful questions and comforting her, when SHE caused it by making every bad decision she could including deciding to do it THAT YEAR, was infuriating. And then he speaks to the guy who put on tanacon, and he lets tana go off accusing him instead of getting his side of the story without her. He does SO LITTLE actually covering WHAT HAPPENED. He doesn't cover how they booked this hotel con center given the intended number of people. He doesn't cover why they knowingly oversold tickets. He doesn't discuss the security and what THEY were told and how prepared they were for what actually happened. Doesn't cover the fact the only accessible food and water required you to get out of the massive line or leave the convention center to go to the hotel lobby, which meant you couldn't get back in. He doesn't talk about ANY of the logistical how and why of the event. He doesn't even really talk about what went wrong. He's supposed to be this competent ass documentary creator, but he did no research into A CONVENTION HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FEATURED AT!!!! Like WHAT?! Like how TF do you agree to go be featured at something, and ask for no information? Like I probably ask for more details when getting a ride to a Drs appointment than Shane asked about attending this convention and being featured. He could have been seriously hurt. All it would've taken is security not noticing someone (someone literally came within feet of Bella and tana in a hall by bullshitting past security), that didn't get bag checked carrying a weapon (which looks too easy based on how poorly security was managing the event). I went to tana con and bought vip which would’ve brought us to the front of the line but there wasn’t one. I walked up to the front and demanded to get in and this lady who was also in charge was very nice and got me and my friends in right away

The Eugenia and Graveyard Girl series were obviously made to boost Shane's ego, but they were nothing compared to this episode it seems! Tanacon was an awful disaster, and Shane should have held her accountable. This is one of the most infuriating of his series because he gives a redemption arc to someone who didn't deserve it... Guess next episode will be completely Tana playing the victim 😑 . Anyway, another good video, Adam! These videos are entertaining and are showcasing just how awful Shane was even just a few years ago. People don't need to forget that.

I always thought the Titanic love story was a way to make the average contemporary audience see themselves in the story, which then adds to the impact of the tragedy. We won’t necessarily relate to the lifestyles of the victims on board because society has moved on but everyone can relate to a love story. :)

Also, here’s my opinion on the Titanic movie. I agree it’s completely screwed up how the real Titanic event has been romanticized. However, I don’t think that was the original intent of the creators. Movie companies have done period pieces for a long time, including love stories. I’ve never seen the movie and I probably never will because I hate romance movies, but in my opinion, trying to offend people and make the event seam beautifully tragic wasn’t the main goal. It’s the fans who glorified the event.

It was during this TanaCON convention docuseries that I realized Shane wasn't the filmmaker he and others thought he was. He's unable to be unbiased or ask the hard questions. He's tough at home in front of his people, but with others he looks up to, or has a history with, or someone he's scared to stand up to, it becomes very apparent that he takes their side or kisses their A$$! He doesn't ask tough questions or show any controversial footage. The fact of the matter is, he used to film great TH-cam footage, he has the capability of being funny & creative, but his fakeness, self depreciating humor, and the fact he cares more about being rich and famous over friends and loyalty really shows the type of person he truly is and isn't.
Part of what rubs me the wrong way with the titanic is that it’s was a corporate failure, they marketed it as unsinkable. They didn’t have enough light boats, they had the lower class people locked down stairs, and most of them didn’t understand what to do because a lot of them didn’t speak English (which most of the crew spoke). They had no clue what to do in the event of the ship sinking. They held the captain responsible, when it really should have been White Star Line. It was a failure on so many ends.

@@jayden.gabrielle it’s the shipping company who had the titanic. They are the ones who dictated the amount of lifeboats on the ship, and the procedure of locking the different classes apart from each other. They along with Harland and Wolff built the titanic, then marketed it as unsinkable.
Watching your reviews of the "series" is way more fun than watching them in the first place (before I knew about Shane's past btw)

tbh always hated this series even when it came out, never made me like Tana more because the whole thing just made no sense and left me with more questions than anything
I remember this series and it was the first year I went to vidcon. I also bought tanacon tickets and planned to go on day 2 but they cancelled all events that day. I don’t know how big the vidcon was that Shane went to in 2009 but I assume it was smaller because TH-cam was not as big then as it was when Tana made Tanacon in 2018. I don’t know what she was thinking but I remember around that time Bryce Hall and Tana both got kicked out for different reasons and it was supposed to be a vidcon for the “rebels”. It took forever for me and my sister to get our refund too. 🤷♂️

I know this was just a small point you mentioned, but I don't personally think the movie romanticized the tragedy of the Titanic sinking. I feel it did the opposite, I knew It was sad and tragic but this gave us a look into what it really was like. While rose and Jack were real, there were real couples who went through the sinking. It hits me when how tragic is really is whenever I watch it.
Titanic is my favorite movie oop, if you watch it you’ll notice that commentary on wealth inequality is one of the bigger themes of the movie
I feel the same way. The movie was very accurate on a lot of things and it was very very emotional. They just threw in a tragic love story is all.
I've always had a little trouble with Titanic because of that though. Like the first half is this sweeping BBC level of attention to detail, great commentary on post-Victorian class and gender roles and how that restricts people. It's more like a painting or a novel than a film.
It's just such a whiplash to then switch suddenly to an hour of action explosions. Like the overlap of historical social drama and action movie is a pretty weird mood area that's hard to switch gears.
But I agree with you largely.
Plus like basically any historical drama is going to be given a romantic subplot in film. I'd say a century old one's less likely to be offensive to people than more modern history. And star-crossed lovers one or more of whom dies is basically one of the most common plots in drama.
Weird the Titanic seems to be the one Adam sees as sacrosanct. But I guess people all have their own hidden annoyances
And my personal theory about the door that rose floats on being “big enough for the both of them” was that it was intentionally big enough for them both, but rose symbolized the upper class which takes more than it’s fair share of resources, leaving Jack (symbolizing the poor) to die in the water

I am absolutely fucking with you about the titanic! Thousands of people lost their lives in such a tragic and torturous way, drowning in the freezing ocean, yet people just focus on the movie and make memes and shit 🤬🤬🤬 as someone who has an interest in tragic events like that, they need to be treated with the utmost respect and due regard instead of just being made into a joke or being romanized. Again, people lost their lives!

Tana is a perfect example of being rewarded for bad behavior. Her entire career and income are completely dependent on her messing things up. If Tana suddenly started showing up everywhere on time, stopped cussing like a sailor , and started making study supply videos while she goes to college and holds puppies she’d lose everything. We made Tana because we wanted her to screw up for our entertainment

I was so pissed off by the tanacon "documentary" I had watched swell entertainments video about her experience at tanacon and had seen other attendees videos too not long before the documentary came out, and I KNEW as someone who went to expos with my dad growing up, that tanacon had been CATASTROPHIC. Not even having attended tanacon myself. So to see Shane sitting there, not asking meaningful questions and comforting her, when SHE caused it by making every bad decision she could including deciding to do it THAT YEAR, was infuriating. And then he speaks to the guy who put on tanacon, and he lets tana go off accusing him instead of getting his side of the story without her. He does SO LITTLE actually covering WHAT HAPPENED. He doesn't cover how they booked this hotel con center given the intended number of people. He doesn't cover why they knowingly oversold tickets. He doesn't discuss the security and what THEY were told and how prepared they were for what actually happened. Doesn't cover the fact the only accessible food and water required you to get out of the massive line or leave the convention center to go to the hotel lobby, which meant you couldn't get back in. He doesn't talk about ANY of the logistical how and why of the event. He doesn't even really talk about what went wrong. He's supposed to be this competent ass documentary creator, but he did no research into A CONVENTION HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FEATURED AT!!!! Like WHAT?! Like how TF do you agree to go be featured at something, and ask for no information? Like I probably ask for more details when getting a ride to a Drs appointment than Shane asked about attending this convention and being featured. He could have been seriously hurt. All it would've taken is security not noticing someone (someone literally came within feet of Bella and tana in a hall by bullshitting past security), that didn't get bag checked carrying a weapon (which looks too easy based on how poorly security was managing the event). Or even a crowd surge because OMG SHANE DAWSON. Idk. It's all such a bad look

The Eugenia and Graveyard Girl series were obviously made to boost Shane's ego, but they were nothing compared to this episode it seems! Tanacon was an awful disaster, and Shane should have held her accountable. This is one of the most infuriating of his series because he gives a redemption arc to someone who didn't deserve it... Guess next episode will be completely Tana playing the victim 😑 .
Anyway, another good video, Adam! These videos are entertaining and are showcasing just how awful Shane was even just a few years ago. People don't need to forget that.

I always thought the Titanic love story was a way to make the average contemporary audience see themselves in the story, which then adds to the impact of the tragedy. We won’t necessarily relate to the lifestyles of the victims on board because society has moved on but everyone can relate to a love story. :)
