WWII Veteran Fires a Howitzer for the first time since 1944

- Sometimes when I'm out doing my military training I'm asked to mix my two jobs. My specialty in interacting with WWII Veterans and being a military journalist. Here is a story I got to cover in 2018 that I think everyone will like.
Claude Cawood joined the Army in 1939. He served in the Philippines during World War II. He was invited to visit the artillery range at Camp Grayling, Michigan to visit with current artillerymen and get the opportunity to pull the lanyard on this massive weapon system.

NordvestGaming Yeah, hearing protection wasn’t implemented until 1956 in the U.S. military. Likely that this man fired thousands of Howitzer rounds with nothing to protect his ears. Wouldn’t be suprised if he says “huh” a lot when talking with people.

My great Grandpa is turning 101 in March. WW2 vet and his vehicle got blown up and now cannot hear in one ear. He even still has all his teeth and healthy as a horse.
Truly the greatest generation.

@@bigmoniesponge army. In ww2 he was one of the few men who learned how to type on a typewriter to send messages in battle because in that time mostly woman learned to type.
Nice in my entire family only one joined the military he was a ww2 soldier he's dead never knew him and he still is the only one that joined the military but I will change that I'm joining the royal marine commandos soon and if i pass I will be the second

As a filipino, i’m proud to say that my grandpa was a WWII vet. I remember when i was a kid, he called me down to the basement and showed me all his stuffs (bayonet, helmet etc.) i really missed him so much. Thank you all for your service!

@@daydodog it's not only the sound that makes people flinch when a howitzer (or a MBT main weapon) fires, it's mostly the pressure.
I still remember feeling the vibrations in my chest inside my APC whenever a nearby tank took a red hot dump into the target tanks holy shit that exercise was fun!
Reminds me of General MacArthur's famous speech. Old soldiers never die, they just fade away!

@@CookieeMonstarr666 Brother I am Dutch I make my own shit i have almost a Tupperware full of THC powder from my previous harvests I mixed it with Moringa powder and boiled it in water afterwards I filtered it and added some honey it tasted meh at first but it grew on me( btw cbd is a brake mechanic and I myself am more of a GAS GAS GAS person ;) )

This is absolutely beautiful, well done fellas. This watered my eyes...my grandfather served in WWII as a forward observer/radio operator with the 50th Field Artillery, 5th ID, 3rd Army Europe...before he passed I was blessed to have the opportunity to go with him back to France, and stood with him on Utah Beach, Normandy, where he landed in ‘44...one of the most cherished moments of my life. Thank you for giving this trooper the opportunity to “send it” one more time. And thank you SGT. Cawood, your countrymen are forever grateful. Rest easy, Sergeant.

Oftentimes, you hear of veterans who have PTSD and are extremely haunted by their experience in a war, but this man is quite different and I respect that. He serves his country with pride, remembers the sacrifices, and cherishes them.

I mean you can get over flinching. I can listen to guns at the gun range with no hearing protection in and not flinch. Same with huge fireworks that I put underground

I fired a 338 and the seal on my hearing protection broke when I leaned into the cheek weld. That shit physically made the inside of my ear hurt, and then it rang for like 2 days.

I think he fired those thing couple of times during WWII when it was louder and no hearing protection.

This is one of the most badass old dudes I’ve ever seen. Man is a living piece of history. My grandfather also served in WWII. When he retired he was a Lieutenant General in the USAF. There’s a picture hanging on the wall of the bathroom in my grandma’s house of President Ford visiting my grandfather when he was on his deathbed.

The bond I have with my boys and girls I looked after, as their Doc, is second to none.
Even 6 yrs removed from service, we can pickup conversation right where we left off.
They might not be blood. But, they damn sure are family to me.

@@riccardos2955 no actually military’s formed based on volunteer service are statistically stronger than soldiers forced to join by the government. We don’t want people who don’t want to serve. What motivation would they have to complete a mission with excellence.

What an absolute honor for those young soldiers. My grandfather is from Tonga and was one of less than 100 who fought against the Japanese in the Solomon Islands and in Guam. God bless the WW2 veterans and anyone in that era. If you were off at war fighting it, you were working in the factories for it. It is widely said that they are called the greatest generation in history... and rightfully so.
Inside every "ol' geezer" is an 18-20 year old waiting to burst out. We see that here. The body may have gotten older and isn't quite as fast anymore...but the spirit remains just as willing today as it was back then. Mentally, he went right back to when he was the same age as the NCO's hosting him.

Reminds me of my Grandfather, he died around the age of 80 years old, but the guy never stood still for long, he always got up early to walk around, even after a colonoscopy. We'd go down to his house to help out with his homemade building, and he was right there next to us. He never lost his joy, he never let anything get to him much, and he just kept walking on. Makes me feel sad that I don't have the opportunity to go down in summer to help him like my brothers and cousins did, and even more when I realize I wasn't grateful for what he did at the time. I was a child then, weak, soft, and useless, and he turned children into adults, strong, hard, and always looking for ways to be useful. I learned it years later than I would've had I just shut up and did my part.
I hope future generations will be ready for the world, with no massive heroes to look up to, it'll be odd (not saying Veterans aren't already heroes, but WW2 and Vietnam Vets are a dying generation, and they deserve all the recognition they get. Hopefully the war against terror generation gets remembered in a similar fashion).

Big Respect. Grandfather walked into Omaha but never talked about that day. Uncle Ray went island to island in the Pacific but also was silent on what he saw. I remember my grandfather's funeral with the 21 gun salute. Made it through that but everyone broke down when a high school friend played taps
My paternal grandfather served in the army in the Pacific in WWII and wouldn’t talk about it when he was alive, and I never knew why. My maternal grandfather was a marine officer who went to Europe in WWII and also talked very little about it. I’m so sorry today that I didn’t ask questions or show more interest 😢. One of my regrets.
My next door neighbor is a Wehrmacht veteran who served as an 88mm flak gunner. His Dad somehow kept him out of the military as a farm worker ('essential job') until his 18th birthday in April 1945, and then he declined the offer of joining the SS , instead serving in the Wehrmacht. He's a bit deaf from firing the 88. He has no fond memories of military service - it was just survival, and survival after the war eating from garbage cans of the occupying Allied forces. He went to a technical school after the war and ended up as a senior engineer at a well-know auto company. He still works physically every single day.
I imagine he has many stories. We can all learn from these brave men and women!
All WWII Veterans fascinate me, but even my grandfathers who fought through the Pacific say that the Axis veterans' stories are incredibly fascinating. They both spent 2 years as part of the occupation forces so that softened their views especially on the Japanese.
Try to get a interview if he can remember his Service all of them from both sides are going away soon and we have to get the stories from those that remain

This is comparable to seeing a Civil War veteran during the 1950’s. Imagine what people back then thought about seeing an old Union Soldier.

That man is a national treasure, my grandfather was a Army combat engineer in world war 2, in the pacific theater. But he passed away at 67 from mesothelioma when I was 8 years old, so I never really got to talk to him about his service.
Those howitzers just made him 60 years younger.
He’s 97. It probably made him 75-80 years younger, lol.

My grandpa was also a WW2 vet. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 93 while battling cancer. 😔🥀

Racism and inequality does need to be solved, and if our country falls because if it, so be it. I respect you and your opinion greatly.
I think its wonderful to give older soldiers the chance to relive there "war" years. They have a look that says they remember it all. God bless them for their service to our country.

And we're taught that the German soldiers are the big bad bois, but in actuality the wehrmacht soliders had more in common with the allied/russian soldiers than they did with their own command. There are a lot of exceptions to what I'm saying, ie: concentration camp gaurds, armor for SS battalions, and so on. But the boots on the ground Germans were more like Americans, Canadians, Brits, Russians. They were fighting because their country was at war.

Sometime ago (within the last decade) the vets from previous wars did an interview with some news outlet. In short they said they would rather go fight the war then younger generations being Lost.
This gentleman would happily do just that
He's back in his element.
The knowledge base this vet would have is unbelievable in this day and age, those who were there would know that it was an absolute pleasure to meet the elderly gentleman!
I personally have not seen a video like this anywhere on TH-cam.

I watched the video. It does not say that it is the same plane, just that he jumped out of a plane over Normandy for the second time. Loved watching him though. Would love to know what was going thru his mind.

This is it, we are the last generation to converse with these men. My entire life I have been fascinated with those who served in the war and the experiances they lived through. Some of those guys lived threw sheer luck and soon they will be gone forever. What a time to be alive!

My grandfather served in soviet navy for 3 years. Such A wonderful man he was. He passed a way in 2009 when I was 9 years old. I wish I was able to ask him many questions... I also have uncle who served in Afganistan for soviets. He saw some crasy action, but I don't have guts to ask him about it, becouse he's been a drinker now days. Guess man got brocken in that war. My father served in militarised police in 1990s when criminals and mafias were most active. I heard stories that my father experienced shootouts and even got a bullet in the leg. He doesn't like to talk about it. People of these generations are quit something. I mean they were a lot stronger than we will ever be... They saw the world we will never see. I feel nothing but respect. Soldier once... remain a soldier for ever.

@@gustavor657 Yes indeed. Technology makes us lazy. It helps us to communicate with all different people from all over the world, but we often forget those who are right beside us. We all should take all this to our hearts while we still can. I always felt huge respect not just for veterans but for old people in general. They are truly something to look up to.

I always love watching WW2 vets get to touch their equipment again. They always light up like a beacon.

I spoke with an old general when I was in the military here in Sweden. He told me that they did not use hearing protection back in the days. They instead got use to the sound he told me. When they got into the military they started at like 200 meters and shoot a couple of shells. Moved forward 50 meters and did the same procedure until the were next to the gun. They did so once and did not need any protection he told me 😂😂
@@Martin894893 it sounds weird, did they just slowly lost their hearing, or developed some defence mechanicsm? ive only shot 122mm d-30, with double hearing protection next to gun, and i feel like u would lose hearing without them
Youll lose your hearing even with protection. I was the gunner for my 120mm mortar crew, wearing earplugs under earmuffs. It would still ring your bell when fired. I have hearing damage from it. Constant ringing.
