  • Just because something is natural and plant-based doesn't mean it's necessarily safe. Those who are pregnant, have gallstones, or are susceptible to kidney stones may want to moderate their turmeric consumption.

This is the last installment of a 6-part video series on the power of spices in general and turmeric in particular. I started out discussing the role spices play in squelching inflammation and free radicals in Which Spices Fight Inflammation? (nutritionfacts....) and Spicing Up DNA Protection (nutritionfacts..... Then out of the lab into the clinic with attempts to test the ability of turmeric extracts to treat joint inflammation with Turmeric Curcumin and Rheumatoid Arthritis (nutritionfacts....) and Turmeric Curcumin and Osteoarthritis (nutritionfacts..... My last video, Boosting the Bioavailability of Curcumin (nutritionfacts...., discussed ways to improve the absorption of these anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds.

This channel is called NUTRITIAN FACTS, so I don't understand why people are complaining about him talking about the dangers of turmeric and not pharmaceuticals or medication. It isn't a secret anymore that medications are dangerous and have lots of side effects. That's why people try to find natural cures nowadays. Therefore his work is actually very important, because a lot of us think just because it is natural it has to be good. The fact that we are used to pharmaceuticals and forgot about all the natural remedies is also a reason why we need to be schooled in this matter. We tend to use natural ingredients without any knowledge which also can be very dangerous

I agree, these videos are essential. I took a liver detox each day with half a teaspoon of turmeric, unknowingly the turmeric was thinning my blood and caused flooding during my menstrual cycle. I became very ill and anemic. But I carried on, it was my husband that discovered this out years later. It is best to be very cautious, we read about benefits but we should be told about side effects. I have recovered well, thank God, and still take it but with caution and never during my cycle.

Those with gallstones (stones in the gallbladder) or kidney stones (like those with gout) should look to alternative treatments other than turmeric.
Turmeric makes the gallbladder squeeze, which hurts a lot when you have stones hanging out inside of it. The most common kidney stone is made up of calcium oxalate. Turmeric has a lot of oxalate in it. The more oxalate you have in your body, the more chances for it to bind with calcium and make calcium oxalate (kidney stones).
      Hope that helps.

Interesting.. I’ve been taking moderate quantities of dried organic turmeric in food & drinks, starting just prior to finding out I had a small gallstone, at the start of the year. I’m pretty sure a particular evening of discomfort is when I passed the stone, 8 months after discovery of it’s existence. I had no idea turmeric affects the gallbladder in the way outlined in this video.. I would caution anyone with a large stone, but mine was recorded (by hi-def ultrasound) at only 3mm, and maybe turmeric helped move it, before it grew to a size too big for the biliary duct. I’ve some kind of inflammatory disorder in many joints large & small, so will continue with turmeric as part of a ‘food as medicine’ approach. Wishing readers good health and happiness :-)

This guy is correct,he knows what he's talking about.Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's safe.Too much of anything is harmful. You must learn your dosage and use anything in moderation.Too much vitamin A is harmful,so if you ate too many carrots, you're at risk.If you blended 4 cloves of garlic in 12 ounces of water,it will possibly kill you, because it's extremely acidic;risk of damaging your stomach lining. That would lead you bacterial infection and death.raw peanuts contain mold chemicals that damage the liver, which is why you much roast peanuts to kill the mold.Potato leaves are natural but toxic if eaten, yet sweet potato leaves are edible, and non toxic.Castor beans are natural, but one bean will kill a human and a few more will kill a horse.Even workers gathering the beans become ill, because the beans contain Ricin.Castor beans are used to make castor oil.You people need to have an open mind and stop your ignorant rejection of knowledge.

Yes, M.G. does dig deep into subjects. I recommend you do the same - I`m glad you appreciate an open mind which is needed to learn: Carrots don`t contain retinol. Retinol isn`t even vitamin A, by the definition of "vitamin" which means a nutrient our bodies can`t make themselves. Humans can`t make carotenoids which therefore are vitamins and needed from plant foods. Animal tissues contain retinol, which causes oxidative stress (whilst carotenoids are anti-oxidants!) and cause a bunch of harm in excess e.g. the risk of ATTR amyloidosis in it`s many forms and osteoporosis.
FY: I`ve eaten more raw garlic cloves than that - on a pizza! - and survived. Just delicious!
Mold is unhealthy and shouldn`t be eaten. Fortunately our tastebuds are sensitive to detect that.
There are poisonous plants but eatable beans are very healthy! Actually beans is the most strongly associated food group to healthy old age.

@@soilikasanen Beans are legumes and contain a toxin called pectin. Pectin cause stomachcramps, diarrhea, gas, and loose stools. This is why I don't like, nor do I need beans. There are better sources of fiber than has bad symptoms.
As for eating raw garlic cloves,.thei potency varies, there is more than one type of garlic. If you ate multiple cloves daily, I guarantee you will be hospitalized for live damage within a few months or less,.especially eating potent garlic, not mild garlic.
Vitamin A retinol exist within cod liver oil and within liver consumer meats. This form of vitamin compound is dangerous in excess which varies from person.

The problems is that turmeric is by FAR not the only food with oxalates. Oxalates are found in berries, nuts, green vegetables (especially spinach, chard, rhubarb and their relatives), and beans. So to try and lower your oxalate intake would be difficult. There is a certain bacterium known to break down oxalate though that may be helpful.

    • @4JOJO1947
      @4JOJO1947 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

There are dozens of health-promoting foods that are commonly found in reference lists of “high-oxalate foods,” but the only ones that have conclusively been shown to raise urinary levels of oxalate are:3
      1. beets, spinach, and rhubarb
      2. strawberries
      3. nuts
      4. whole wheat
      5. all dried beans
Despite their high oxalate content, there is actually little evidence that restricting the above foods reduces the likelihood of developing calcium oxalate stones. When people with a history of kidney stones were compared with people without such a history, there was no difference in oxalate intake. Similarly, when people with the highest levels of oxalate consumption were compared with people consuming the lowest levels, the risk of developing stones over time was not substantially different. Stone formation is a complex process that involves multiple dietary and lifestyle factors besides oxalate ingestion. In addition, endogenous (made within the body) metabolism of amino acids and other substances accounts for a large proportion of the oxalate that ends up in the urine.6

You people are unbelievable. This is a balanced video, with a lot of good information using real data, showing that there are risks for taking ANY supplement, as well as many benefits, that should be carefully considered. But instead of appreciating this information, people here would rather stick their fingers in their ears and say "Nananananana! Can't hear you! You're a shill for Big Pharma!" Seriously? Use your intelligence. With ANYTHING, there's a risk of too much consumption. He's saying "Be mindful of the risks here." That's all. But you guys would rather discount this in favor of some stuff on blogs and 2nd or 3rd hand info.

Yes, fresh turmeric is better, among others because lots of supplements are tainted with lead (they even add it on purpose apparently cause it makes it look very yellow) so you don’t have that problem as much with fresh turmeric (although in some countries the soil it grows in/on is high in lead)

I just got my container of Turmeric powder in today and was going to add 1/4 teaspoon into my daily "concoction" if you will.
    it is
    16 ounces of warm water
    1 table spoon honey
2 tablespoons of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg's)
    1 teaspoon Ginger powder
    1 tablespoon of lemon
    1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
And now 1/4 teaspoon of Turmeric
Anyone see any issues with that mixture?
    Anything else I could/should add?
    Any advice is appreciated.

A number of years ago, I was debating buying a product & asked the phone rep what the ingredients were because I was concerned about adverse reactions with the meds I was already taking. It's truth that too much of something is bad but if you know how to incorporate evenly into your health routine then it's just normal. Instead of bashing this herb maybe "someone" can learn the secrets of Asian's ancient remedies. Over in Asia, we have a lot of herbs/medicine plants/fungus that are really good for our health. Thanks so much for making this presentation of the possible concerns for misuse of this herb.
THANK YOU also for pointing out the overly misused and misleading use of the term 'natural'. Of course my favorite analogy is that Hemlock and Poison Ivy are also natural.
As far as DNA damage is concerned, are you saying that turmeric damages DNA structure? I know the DNA equation is vast but in my limited understanding of DNA, it as a living document that under continuous change and adjustment. These changes are activated according to exposure of all types, whether it be by consumption of food, vitamins and pharmaceuticals, or thoughts we think, activities we perform, and even exposure to radiation including EM and RF from cell phones and other sources as well as other forms of radiation. Is what you are calling 'damage' actually destructive as implied or is it simply constructive change? I would like you to expound on this important aspect as the slide and narrative really say very little about what you are implying.
I would also debate the amount of turmeric consumed in the Indian culture. If you ever been to a laundromat in San Francisco or invited into one of their homes, you may retract that statement. The wonderful smell or turmeric is everywhere and hit the high olfactory sense without mistake.
I consume well into the 2 tablespoon daily range combine with a small amount of black pepper and ginger. For me anyway, turmeric has been a godsend that far exceeds the effectiveness of any anit-depressant and anti-inflammatory that big pharma has provided. In addition, I am consuming it topically as a body wash. Hopefully though your presentation will help keep the cost of turmeric low by scaring away buyers.
I would really like to see a concerned citizen, industrial leader, or other party involved in the health and well being of humanity discuss more pertinent and realistic concerns, like the dangers of daily exposure to sodium lauryl sulfate by sublingual and subdermal ingestion (I reiterate DAILY), or the connection between long term use of xanax and dementia.

Many plants are including potatoes as they become deadly nightshare if you leave in the ground more than two years if you fancy atropine poisoning. The Atropine from deadly night shade is not used in medicine by the way , this is something manufactured to treat those with Parkinsons, so don't go leaving your spuds or peelings or any part of the plant in. One black berry is enough to kill. You even get iriritation if you rub against the leaves. So be very careful. The ripe berries go everywhere. So before they ripen remove plant.
Take IMPERVIOUS gloves and plastic bag with you DIG UP ENTIRE PLANT put straight into the bag without shaking mud off, take off site and burn DISPOSE OF WASTE THOROUGHLY AND PERMANENTLY.
As well as that, You might not get all the tubers up in one go, so keep at it year on year double dig bxxxxxd trenching each time till all gone beware where your getting manure from, too, always leave it to ferment upto 6 months, before double digging in. Fermenting manure burns so it will reduce in height and dont put raw, near anything wooden or itll catch light.
cow manure best as eliminates most weed seeds in cows 7 stomachs but highly pungent and may contain harmful heavy metals and hormones. That the cow was fed on.

Yes,I got my gall bladder removed, but if I had the choice again I would stop eating fatty food and drink 2- 4 liters of distilled lemon and lime water every day.it's very hard to give up junk food but at least once per day I get diarrhea because my gall bladder is gone,it is worth giving up bad food just to be normal It must be a fresh squeezed lemon and lime fruit. It travels all over your body and dissolves any stones or plaque it finds.I exercised very hard for many years,it made my gall bladder dehydrated, the gall bile inside concentrated and allowed crystals to form-this is the start of a gall stone, they grew until they blocked my bile duct and I was in a lot of pain,it is really bad, like someone twisting all your muscles tightly,my pancreas also got infected,it was too late for me to act,I had to get it removed.Hopefully to anyone reading this it will help, drink lots of water when exercising, minimum 1 liter, when you are finished start drinking lemon and lime water,it will replace lost electrolytes, hydrate you and stop stones forming.Don't believe the stories about lemon and lime water dissolving teeth enamel-these are lies to stop you being healthy.

I have just finished taking Harvoni for Hep C for 6 months and at last blood test am showing that my hep c is no longer in my body.Yea, after having the disease for some 20 years I am finally free of it. I do however, have cirrhosis of the liver caused by the Hep C virus and have been experiencing a lot of arthritis pain. Some one suggested I take a 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric a day and it will help with the pain. My question is this. I had my gallbladder removed about 4 years ago and have been experiencing IBS. Will the turmeric cause me cause me more problems that I might be concerned about?

+Jan MacKay Hmmm from this video and my own experience, putting a few shakes of tumeric powder on my food is all I need to experience something a "healthy" like feeling from it ...Old stand by for liver cleansing is milk thistle, don't know how this would be used in the presence of something like your condition. The overall message I got from this video is that tumeric can have beneficial effects at low doses. Good luck with your liver!

Unfortunately I am allergic to milk thistle. Break out in welts all over but the Turmeric and curcumin capsules seem to be working great. Someone suggested that I even add some grated fresh ginger in small doses to a morning smoothie or juice. The heat from the ginger helps the turmeric to work better. So long as it doesn't hurt me and makes me feel better, why not give it a try.
      Thank you for your reply

+Jan MacKay - you would benefit from small doses of Curcumin with some finely ground pepper to make it more bio-available. However, you've got a lot of things going on and I would make the investment of talking to a natural health practitioner or at least a very good health food associate or compounding drugstore pharmacist.

hi beetroot daily will increase your bile production .so having no gall bladder will be fine.if your liver is producing enough daily you do not need your gall bladder as it's job is to store bile .

I had the most unreal case of eczema for about the last year. Never had it before, it tore my fingers up with blisters and caused me rashes all over. I itched like never before and in places I wont say lol. Drove me crazy almost put it that way. So I tried elimination of everything and nothing worked except cortisone cream for supression. Then finally I thought about it and I had been taken turmeric for the last year and a half so I quit it and FINALLY it has been clearing. So after thinking it was so good for me I found out that it was not so good for everyone, one of the bad sides of it.

I got the powder and root for my mother's cancer.. (Tumeric) I also bought a curcumin pill (curamed) and thought that would help a lot. I think I am going to stick with the natural root instead of pills now. This kind of upset me, especially when I've heard such great things about the pill.

    Couple comment about turmeric:
Most supplement of turmeric are in dosage of 450-500 mg. Turmeric contain a lot of oxalate that in the human body in acidic environment with calcium convert in stone (kidney stone). That may be dangerous. Absorption of turmeric is relatively low. In order to improve that black peeper can be use. It such case turmeric absorption effectiveness increase 20 time!!! Knowing the above my believe is that Turmeric use as supplement need to be properly formulated:
    1. The dosage should be reduced by 10 time to around 50mg.
    2. Appropriate dosage of calcium need to be mix with turmeric to stop absorption of oxalate. Same people recommend to add to the mix magnesium as well.
    2. Appropriate dosage of black pepper need to be mix with turmeric to improve effectiveness of biological absorption.
So significantly lower dosage that may be up to 2 time as effective.
