    Why do people always complain about the fact that trading in ED is boring? You don't fucking have to trade! If you do bounty hunting, ED offers a lot of action and you can make a lot of money from it. And if you get into combat zones, you can even join huge space battles.
    What bothers me about this video is, that you see the tester only flying around in the smallest spaceships which you can get within an hour. He obviously never tried a combat ship. Which means he never really tried real combat and therefor never even saw the fun parts of the game.

      Seems like a common issue in the game journalism industry. Games have gotten to the point where you can't judge them based on the ammount of time they are given to play.

    You give this 7.2 and to call of duty an 9? Come on! This is way more revolutionary and better than any COD

    • @Illier1
      @Illier1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      "revolutionary" is not what a game is about. It also has to be fun and gets to the point. This is why CoD excels and these indie titles don't. This was created for a niche group who liked space. CoD appeals to the masses and brings fun quick. Most people are too impatient to wait, they bought the game for immediate please. If I wanted a tedious, long space sim I'll go play EVE Online, at least that game has an established playerbase and a ton more content.

    • @Hijynx87
      @Hijynx87 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Illier1 I'll agree, it's a shame though. Recycled garbage get's higher opinions from the mainstream. CoD was great, no, amazing at first. It just kept getting recycled after mw2, blops was the last good one.....blops 2 was also decent.

    It's not supposed to be an instant gratification, action packed all the time type of game. It's a relaxing game about exploring the unknown. It's not for everyone but it is great.

    • @thecasualgamer5578
      @thecasualgamer5578 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well not relaxing all the time, the game consists of long relaxing stretches of peace and calmness interspersed with moments of tense action. It's definitely the kind of game that benefits from an iTunes playlist full of jamming music in the background.

      The problem for me its that its not uknown... theres more or less nothing out there. After a short while the gameplay loop kicks in and it really becomes just flying from one end to the other with cargo. Some fight or do something else... but exploration wise its why I sort of left the game and only play it every third or so month to do some space trucking. Story and lore is hidden in UI and theres no real dynamic events, things to really find and be amazed by but a few things that you might never see. And frankly thats my problem... very expensive and little content for that price plus f2p cosmetic stuff. Maybe the additions coming to exploration can help me come back however.

    "Elite Dangerous is definitely not trying to be a successor to classics like Freespace or Privateer..."
    Really... Did you not even do a Google search?
    The Elite franchise began the space simulator genre in 1984!
    As for gameplay it sounds like you'd rather a simple match based combat experience rather than the world that Elite offers. Fair enough but Elite has to cater for those who want to trade or explore or are just out looking at their favorite star systems or nebulae. If it were to become what you want it to be (all combat all of the time) then half the target audience would be alienated.

I am simply waiting for more content, not more ships (already have most of then). More diversity in SRV's would be nice too.

      gamingdevil800 the problem with simulating and making 400 billion star systems, is that players can get spread out. the only thing to bring players together are good trade routes or story lines, and even then its rare to see other players.
      that's a serious problem.

      Paul Prithu Let fanboys have their game! No idea how and when did E:D community became so toxic! It wasn't like there at all during alpha/beta. I backed E:D and I stop playing in gamma exactly because all the reasons this IGN reviewer mentioned. There were a TON of people worried about the fact that this vast universe was empty and with no personality. People were getting credits to buy better ships and that was basicaly it! There were/are no interesting and complex mechanics or dynamics behind every role or even every action. I believe that was the time where fanboys started to emerge and fill the reddit and forums with the usualt troll remarks towards those that wanted E:D to be a better game. Now the game is out and it's suffering the exact problem we said it would. So there you have it.

      An online space sim in which there is nothing to do. Thats the criticism, and it seems rightly placed. Just because space is big, doesn't mean there has to be nothing to do in it. The fact that getting an interaction with the environment is something to cheer about is worrisome. Whats the point of taking to the stars and seeing what it would be like to be a pilot if you can't do anything?

    • @hicon
      @hicon 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      movmakerNeo There are densely popualted areas around "Rare" Trade routes and conflict zone, but the fact you can fly out and be all but a lone is an awesome bit of gameplay. I agree this reviewer just didn't like that the game requires a bit of dedication. It isn't for the casual gamer, its for the kind of gamers who love space sims (eve online for example).

  • @BingleFlimp

    I've met the developers of the game and they seem a decent sort, they say what they mean and won't promise anything unless they know they can deliver (unlike Sean Murray). They seem committed to continue adding to the game to really flesh it out. If you don't like the game now then keep complaining, they'll see it and, if enough people feel the same as you, you may see some happy changes coming.

    • @KasbashPlays
      @KasbashPlays 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashwath Nair I'm a game design student and some of the devs are alumni of my Uni and former students of one of my tutors. They came down 2 or 3 months back for a meet and greet, basically having the current students meet and drink with successful former students and be inspired is what they were aiming for.
      Basically they were saying that the game was bloody hard to make, I was talking to the guy in charge of the planet textures and he must have spent the better half of an hour talking about how making the animated textures for the gas giants was so hard because it was an animation built on code rather than a hand made animation, making the storm on Jupiter look realistic and never ending and stuff like that.
      Somewhere in there they were saying there's still more the studio wants to add to the game and they were aiming to do it in upcoming updates.

    This game is still not what the other 50% of the Elite hardcore fans want it to be. Which is a successor to Elite 2 and 3. The fans who remember landing on planets and finding a desolate moon with a mining colony or recluse cult settlement, are still lacking the enthusiasm to embrace this game completely (myself included, having paid Premium Beta and only waiting for planetary landings to get into this).
    This is the real awe and inspiration which is lacking in the exploration part of Elite as of yet. Finding planets and moons is ok, but what is the point if they are lifeless at this point. People want to discover that abandoned outpost on Ross 128 or that bustling mining town in Bernards Star. We don't want to keep coming upon the same cookie cutter space stations time and time again. We want each settlement to reflect its level of progress. If the space stations had already implemented this (which they have not) Then discovering those outpost in orbit would of been wholly satisfying too.
    Other than this, EVA (extravehicular activity) is the only other promising feature to break the monotony of space travel. We want to marvel at our ships from the inside. To be able to upgrade crew quarters and feel a sense of pride and attachment for the vessel we purchased. So far losing a sidewinder or viper or whatever carries no consequence, other than a reload. But if you had things on the ship that held great sentimental worth than things would be more interesting.
    I hope ED gets to its final goal. Of delivering an Elite 4 experience and improvement to the Elite 2-3. To incorporate its big game hunting ideas and expand on the universe which largely feels like an empty placeholder as of now. This from a big hardcore fan.

    In Europe we had 10 years of popular space games before Wing Commander while you guys in the US may have been more familiar with Mario and Sonic; we were playing Elite, Federation of free traders, Star glider and Captain blood amongst others on our crappy home micros. It's no coincidence that young Chris Roberts grew up here with a BBC micro, or young Jez Sans worked on the C64 version of Elite before he developed the Super FX chip and Star Fox. Chris Sawyer converted Frontier Elite 2's machine code to PC long before roller coaster tycoon. The producer of GTA (having also worked on Frontier) described the original GTA as 'Elite in the city'. It's been massively influential to our gaming landscape. Check out where Elite came from. Privateer and Freelancer were in fact trying to succeed Elite. Really wish these reviews would do a google search, imagine a review for a new CIV game that was in complete ignorance of the rest of the series.

  • @Baleur
    @Baleur 9 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Just a tiny one-sentence passing notice about the fact that the game world has 200 BILLION starsystems each with their own planets and asteroids, of which there are millions of asteroids in a single belt around a single planet.
    You know, just the largest most expansive recreation of a complete galaxy that we have ever seen in the games industry since the original Elite (and Frontier).
    No big deal, right?.......
    THAT is the biggest draw of the game. That is why you buy or play Elite. The fact that combat and the other mechanics are good is a bonus. You dont buy or play elite to have 5 minute length matchmade 4 on 4 capture the flag match with unlockable attachments for your space rifles.
    Yet another in the infinite lists of reasons why i never listen to reviews by so called game "journalists". They are just 4 minutes of nonsense babbling written together on a napkin to sound like it would fit in a multimedia setting. No real info, no real research, no real details. Just completely vague useless nonsense for 4 minutes. And then a score which means nothing.
    Positive nonsense or negative nonsense, just useless words which dont say a lot with any meaning.

      Why do you need to land on a planet?
      It has 400 billion star systems and you expect them to add all the buildings,trees,and life to every planet?! They don't have a city full of employees working constantly on the game.
      The game is good the way it is already and they are still updating it to make it better. It is a nearly 1:1 scale of the Galaxy and a space sim where you stay in space and fly spaceships. Anyway I think frontier developments hopes to eventually add planet landing in. Just be patient.

      Haven Gaming Check out No Man's Sky, It is all procedurally generated and would take nearly 5 billion years to visit every planet. No Man's Sky has planets that are to scale with life, etc,. Also not this company only has 4 people working on the game.Having said that I do think Elite: Dangerous could offer more, but what it does offer is most likely the most realistic space simulator compared to No Man's Sky or Star Citizen. I can't wait to play Elite: Dangerous on Xbox One that is for sure.

It's totally warranted to say most of the game is flying through nothing to let people know that's what their getting into. Just like DayZ is a lot of walking and running through the woods.

      The space is really huge, so if you go out exploring the Galaxy, the odds of meeting a player (unless you wing up with a friend) are close to zero, BUT there are many community events that change each week, and you sure as hell will meet lots of players there. If you're in big or famous locations, those are also always very population heavy.

    Your reviews became more like a parody reviews.. It's so sloppy and non mature that it seems like you are trying to mock the devs and people who tried to make something really amazing. There are a hand full of space games, sims or arcades or whatever, that exist at all, just because how hard is it to imagine it, make it logical and understandable for people / players to play and enjoy. Plus, on the other side it the budget. You need a lot of money especially for a space sim, I would guess, cause there is so much to do, maybe something similar to a GTA series, which always broke some records in gaming industry.
    Anyway, I just wanted to say one more thing and that is that.. The Star Citizen will not be that huge at all, it will have 100 planets, but detailed and you can land on everyone of them. So then you will say probably how you explored all 100 planets within a week, and with that said, game starts to be boring and empty hah.

    I just started playing this game and I'm loving it. This is not one of those games that will tell you where to go or what to do or even how to do it but that learning process is also what makes it fun, it gives you a sense of accomplishment when it finally clicks and you actually know what you're doing after hours of research and trial and error.
    And most of the boredom from this game comes from not having any goals or objectives, which you must set for yourself. But even the most boring thing in this game which is merchanting can be fun when you find a lucrative route and start making bank.
    And while yes the game still has some balancing issues as in mining/pirating don't make nearly as much money as trading while being far more tedious it's being worked on.

    IGN really should redo their review on Elite Dangerous, as it has had such a long development cycle through the past 3 years, from Thargoids and Guardians to Beyond, the game is truly better than it was 3 years ago, new mining mechanics, new exploration mechanics, passenger missions, new ships, weapons and HUD redesigns all make Elite much better than it was before.

    What elite dangerous is missing is NPC characters on stations. Aside from other ships, you are alone.
    And that's what drives the monotony, making the game as they say, a mile wide but an inch deep.
    If you could explore night clubs, bars, markets and hotels that vary station to station, there'd be an exploratory payoff to all that long-hauling.
    Otherwise the game loses all playability once you earn your first few million creds, repeating everything over and over...

      Bare with me..
      QUITE a few years ago My father and I went to a TV store to get a new television (This was in the mid 90's). When we got there we spoke to the store manager who showed us a number of TV's including this one Sony TV. The quality was AMAZING! He then went on to tell us all these 'amazing' features it had. Three scart sockets, two headphone jacks a separate RCA and god knows what else. We ended up buying it (£800) only to get home and find it had one scart socket, one headphone jack and NONE of these other amazing features built in....Oh and it wasn't the same model he'd been showing us in store but rather a cheaper one.
      We took it back and said we think he gave us the wrong TV. "Oh I didn't say it had ANY of those. I said you could buy adaptors to give it 3 scarts. That was the TV I'd shown you" etc.
      We had to take him to small claims court to get our money back. The judge said "You've not only supplied these people with false information about the product in an attempt to get them to buy the product but also gave them a product that they'd never seen before hoping they wouldn't notice." The judge then went on to say they were in contempt of the trades description act and could get in serious trouble. Two years later the guy was in court again for doing the same thing to another customer but this time he was heavily fined and also lost his business over it.
      Now, what Shaun has done is exactly the same damn thing but on a MUCH larger scale.. Only two months before release he ran of a list of features this game has... and it has not and would have known these features were not in the game at the time of his interviews. This is basically fraud and he was attempting to sell us (Thankfully I didn't buy it) based on features that are not in the game. He needs to get a job at E.A. He's a damn good liar.
      Sorry for the essay xD

    I laughed when he said "When Elite does a good job of making each ship distinctive, that immerses you in the seat of the pilot" when all their ships look like blocks.
    Compare that to the "actually" distinctive ships of Star Citizen, where you can get up, walk around, use access panels around the ship that can have certain roles asigned to them. The ships are customizable, inside and out that have damn good effects on how you play in the ship..

    I'm a big fan of the game, but I have to concede this much - I think he's being fair all things considered. Some reviews I've seen gush about the game, while others pan it, and both come across as a bit self-serving and not very open minded.
    Fact is, Elite Dangerous is not for everyone, and this IGN review shows why. He's not wrong about any of the downsides mentioned, but to me, they're simply not downsides. When explaining he used the expression "all killer, no filler" to explain what Elite isn't, but to me that filler is a necessary part of the immersion. If things were more scripted or if forced encounters more numerous, basically the very thing that draws you to the game in the first place (piloting your own spaceship) would be ruined. To people like me, this game is fantastic as is, and will only get better as they expand on it, but we're not what you'd call an average breed of gamer. We're a niche in the grand scheme of things.
    And remember, despite his misgivings he also said things like "what kept me coming back" - which is in itself a form of praise.
    Oh, and of course if the reviewer WANTED balls to the wall action, he simply should have played in one of the areas the online community are currently warring over. Tons of PVP going on in some systems I hear. I stay the hell away from those places.
    And yes, it's sad that he failed to recognize that Elite came out BEFORE Freespace and Privateer, but oh well ;)

    Two years on Elite has greatly evolved. This game is a 10 year project for the developers, so new features are constantly being added. We now have player wings, political factions, varied stations, planetary landings, the ability to customize ships through engineers and NPC co-pilots to man launchable fighter craft to fight beside you. You'll still do a lot of traveling to get where you need to go, and the game is hard as hell! But if you want a game that gives you a deep feeling of accomplishment when you do get ahead, because it's not easy, try Elite. Next month we get multi-crew so fellow players can fly in the same ship, and an avatar creator.
    And oh yeah! Aliens just started showing in human space last month!
    Keep you canopy intact!

    This game requires you to master your ship not just clicking on what to attack or what to mine. I keep finding new things about my ship like I always used to put power to wep and sys before but then I started to notice I can't turn as well. Putting power to eng increases both your maneuverability and speed, which makes sense and is very useful depending on who you are fighting and what ship you have. Also when going to resource sites you need to consider where the sun is or you might be fighting in pitch black darkness. Things like this are what make me love this game it requires some common sense.

    Elite dangerous wasn't about creating a space sim with all the content to last thousands of hours. It was about making the 4th game of the elite series and making elite dangerous better than the first three games of the series it's great the way it is and frontier developments is still hard at work to constantly add huge updates.

      Elite is an MMO, you can play it solo but the galaxy is still connected, which means stuff changes, such as prices for trade goods and which factions run the systems. Also, it's to a much, much smaller scale to EVE, the biggest playable ship is 290 meters long.

    People keep asking about this game (Elite: Dangerous) vs No Man's Sky. While they both have different choices in graphic design and the overall coding of each game, they both have one main purpose and that is space exploration. Elite simply becomes a beautiful grinder quite fast because you can't travel onto any planets, and even if a player could eventually walk on planets, based off of our real universe, most planets wouldn't have life. In No Man's Sky the ability to land on planets is available to everyone, and most planets hold life. I just see no real purpose in a space exploration game if you are stuck in the empty void of space, only trying to upgrade your ship. This game looked awesome at first, but now it seems like a possible let down because there is no real exploration if you can't discover. Discover new planets, discover new life! That is the main purpose of No Man's Sky. They even implemented the purpose to travel to the center of the universe to uncover what is there. Before a dev team sets out to make a rpg like game I believe there have to be enough objects and creatures to be able to interact with, especially if there is no real story. No Man's Sky has been living up to it's hype under the microscope of the whole gaming press, while this game hasn't within a glance of a review.

      TheSixthSense No ands, buts, or ifs... This game is not worth buying!!! This is coming from 1984 Elite fan who supported this game on Kickstarter. Elite Dangerous is a buggy, incomplete mess, and multiplayer is a total waste of time!

      Bob Green I never played the older elite games, so I had no expectations of this game coming into it. From that perspective, I thought that this game was brilliant, but obviously you may be comparing it to the older games, and I know that previous game is always better, no matter the series, from elite, to Counter Strike, even to Call of bloody Duty (probably due to nostalgia). Either way, this game does a lot of things right, and as I said, is a bit of a niche game, where if you dislike the genre you will most likely dislike the game.

    Even though I love the snot out of this game, for the average gamer I believe this is about as accurate and unbiased a review as you can get. Different kinds of people will love or hate this game, but it certainly helps if you are a space nerd. And I am. Traveling between stars is something I dreamed about since I was a kind, and that is why I liked the original 1984 game and it's sequels.
    Another thing is that most of the things that Elite Dangerous lacks will be added in the next several months. Player groups, more diverse missions, more detailed galaxy politics. And of course, walking around your ship, stations and landing on moons and planets.
    I've stopped playing games about 8 years ago mostly because I got bored with them. I simply don't care about battlefields, sexy lost treasure hunter heroines, trolls, elves or other mystical creatures. But now I go all warm and fuzzy inside when I navigate my ship close to an O type star and see the inside of my cockpit bask in it's blue light.
    Bottom line, I'm sure I will play this game for years to come.

      Unless they have changed things since earlier builds, they do have an offline mode, where space is filled with just NPC craft. It does however use the online markets, and missions etc, but at least you can fly about without potential trollers to ruin your day.

    Elite: Dangerous is a true Sandbox. The experience is heavily affected by the actions of other players, and the universe is evolving all the time. However, if all you want is to 'poke the bear' as it were, there are resource extraction zones full of pirates in need of killing, but just like the original Elite, unless you're a god, combat is very challenging in your starter ship.
    A lot has changed since release, as well. Frontier Developments did themselves a real disservice by releasing the game before it was fully cooked. There are now all these out of date reviews hanging around giving people the impression the game is what it was four months ago, at release. It now has co-op teams, improved combat and a fantastically rich set of community tools to help you find trades, combat and other fun.

    You have to love these self proclaimed elite pro's, generic arguments about "make your own fun" and "you don't understand elite". The game is boring, it all boils down to hauling goods back and forth.
    In before fan boys comments, take a step back and weigh up what you have done in the time you did it, there's far more dull moments than fun one, the balance is off and that's a fact. Most people (not these blind folded, unflinchingly dedicated "elite pro's") prefer to have fun all the time in a game, simulator or not, and I promise you this, you won't. Why would I wan't to LOOK for fun for hours, why doesn't FUN find me (oh lemme guess, I must MAKE my own fun, Frontier should pay me then I guess), aarrghh im done, ill sit back and wait for the "content" and then try this silly little game again.

    • @spottygreen
      @spottygreen 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** What is there to do, run the same generic missions over and over? Maby bounty hunting in Resource collection sites, over and over. No, if you want to progress to lets say Python (don't care if you want to or not, I do), you will have to make some serious credit (through Hauling) otherwise you will grind those meaningless tasks over and over.
      Conflict zones are content, more diverse and meaningful than killing the same vipers over and over at a resource site. The problem being, it ends there, that's the real content the game has to offer and nothing more, after hours of fighting there to try and make a difference it also becomes stale really quickly.Now, you tell me what else is there to do that won't be a repeatable event over and over that is credits viable, diverse and meaningful?
      Here's comes the, "Explore the galaxy, same stars and systems visually with randomly generated names", "Kill pirates, same pirates visually with predefined randomly generated names, for no reason", "Mine asteroids, just no", "Haul goods, arrgghh".
      No, if you want to get somewhere in this game, you need to Haul goods and do it alot, once again, over and over.
      Ive done it all and there is nothing more than a handful of things to do, then the repetition starts, which would have been ok with me if it was more than a handful of things, hence the "More Content".If you don't see this then your opinion is biased and based off of an artificial connection to the development team and your trying to convince yourself you did not waste your money with this game in it's CURRENT STATE.
      Im disappointed, the hype was massive but they fell short, in my opinion (see what I did there).

    • @syst3m333
      @syst3m333 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people enjoy hauling goods, trading and exploring space. For some people the fun comes from the hours of space travel and discovery, not the dog fighting. When I used to play Freelancer I spent most of my time finding the best trade routes, and repeatedly docking with trade lanes, travelling up and down the same routes making tons of money. I enjoyed it. If you don't enjoy the game, don't play it. Leave people to enjoy it how they want to rather than accusing them of being biased and creating an "artificial connection to the development team".

    • @spottygreen
      @spottygreen 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Lewis Maby im coming off wrong, I love space sims, I was VERY excited about elite due to pre launch info etc. The idea that was sold is not what I got, "watch trailer", even if they embellish alot, that's still the basic idea of what I expected. There's nothing wrong with hauling when you know your hauling towards something and currently there's nothing.
      As it stands, there isn't much versatility in this game, just alot of repetition with no goals to repeat towards. Oh, and those that say set your own goals, please, we all do, but when my goals don't aligned with exploring 400 Bil star systems there's not much beyond that. My point being, the focus of this game is it's size, not the content in the given space.
      I'm sure they will add more content ass time goes on and that's fine, then ill pick the game up again, with that being said, I get the feeling this game should still be in beta until it adds more stuff, it was rushed out the door and the devs know that.

Elite was my favorite game back in the day on my little Commodore 64 and to play this new version is too cool. With the full features of destiny found accessible when traversing through our local solar system and quickly accessible through some sort of warp drive. But those that have a heart for space exploration can explore the milky way galaxy as if traveling through the Elite game. -fighting fallen, dreadnaught, and cabal spaceships that pass by, with your party. I see soo much potential with an already fulfilling destiny game, and even more potential in a true open world destiny game. I’d be okay with spending $100 on a high quality game like that
